An epic set that over shadows the few weak minis

5/5

Brittle Plastic

2/5

... averaged two to three broken miniatures per brick.

Paint quality on rares is good. Common is hit or miss on quality.

Great Set

5/5

Shattered Star is a impressive set with great sculpts and a detailed paint job on most miniatures.

I did have a few broken miniatures that were easily repaired (gray maiden leg/boot snapped off, shreizyk was broken off the base, mite on spider leg broke off).

My Top 3 Miniatures in no particular order:
1) Wyvern
2) Koriah Azmeren
3) Clockwork Reliquary

My Least Favorite Miniatures in no Particular Order:
1) Grub Swarm
2) Caryatid Column
3) Ravenous Ooze

Awesome new line.

5/5

I just received my Shattered Star Case. I think the quality has actually improved from the Runelords set. This is a great set!

After opening just three bricks in the case I am only missing 4 miniatures for a complete set.

Only 2 breakages in total. Caedimus (#1) popped of the base and Grey Maiden (#21) with both legs broke off the base and floating around the package.

Great line, very excited. Looking forward to what comes next

I'm very pleased..

4/5

I really like Shattered Star miniatures. Sculpts are better than with Heroes&Monsters and paint job is even better than with Rise of the Runelords miniatures. Really nice job by WizKids and Paizo to come up with high level miniatures like these. I bought one brick and got very nice set of figs. Not everything I needed (it is "just" a brick) but many rare figures made me very happy as those often are ones that I'll really need. My good luck continued with two boosters, more rare figs! Nice to see that rare figures aren't too rare.

Still I have to say that you need to improve your packing. Brick had many figures loose but nothing was broken which I consider being pure luck as golem, fire giant and wyvern were all loose in their boxes. Both boosters had their large miniatures loose and one shriezyx had two broken legs because of that. I managed to glue them back but that could have been avoided with better packing.

All in all: nice miniatures with very good paint job. Some figs might be broken by larger ones but that isn't end of the world. I recommend these miniatures to all whom plan to run Shattered Star AP and of course to miniature collectors. One question remains: how will WizKids and Paizo make even better miniatures than these?

I collected the "other" line of minis start to finish and although bent weapons, wings and limbs were common enough broken figures were a rarity, I can only remember three in 13+ sets and 100's of boosters. The cold weather may have contributed but the plastic is just too brittle I've had a couple figures break when someone at my table has dropped one on the floor. The quality of plastic needs to be addressed, I simply can not afford to keep buying figures that either come broken or get broken so easily.

What you fail to understand the plastic has to be as stiff as it is to maintain the detail that they are achieving with these miniatures. The "other" line did not have near the detail that this line does. For that I am glad that they are doing what they are doing with the plastic and would rather they did not change a thing as far as the quality. Now packing the large miniatures with a twist tie for the larges

Does it have to be an all or nothing thing? I ask from the point of view of knowing zero about the plastics so this is an honest question. Could they make them slightly less brittle without going all the way to no detail?

Not really. If they were to make the plastic less stiff they loose some of the detail that they have currently. It just does not get to the crisp enough look to them that the DDM line lacked for the WotC line in the past.

Got a brick in the mail from an online retailer today. I actually had two larges with twist ties holding them i. One was a large air elemental and it had a baggie around it as well. I had no breakages but several loose pieces and I'm counting myself lucky that my Mites on Spiders came through in one piece.

Really digging the sculpts, especially my elementals!

I also really hope that the plastic quality can be addressed. Its very common that at least once a session a mini gets dropped on the floor (which is concrete). I am very concerned about bringing these to my gaming table for this reason.

The whole reason I started collecting pre-painted minis was because of their durability. Metal minis were too easy to damage or chip their paint.

To me the issue of fragility is not about packaging... its about the composition of the plastic. I can handle a little less detail for having more durable minis. Plus, with the significant amount of paint steps Paizo is using on these minis, they will still look really good, even without all the detailed little bits.

Here's hoping this can be addressed in future sets.

That would be really sweet! There are already a couple of minis out there which use the art work from KM.

Concerning the brittleness of the plastic used: they could use 2-component moulding, but that would increase price (dramatically, I believe).
If packaging is improved and the adhesive they use for fixing the minis to their bases, I'd be more than happy.

Now you've got me anxious about what the one I've ordered will look like upon arrival. *crosses fingers*

Ruyan.

I bought 2 bricks to start and then some singles, as I was unable to afford a full case this go around, and I had quite a few broken figures. My Vrock figure is missing a finger, one of my Xulgaths is missing an arm ... they were not broken off in shipping, the finger and arm are just not there. So, they had to have been packaged that way, and not sure how that could be missed. I got two hounds of tindalos and one of them had its tongue snapped off. There were other breakages but those are the main ones.

The biggest disappointment to me was my Clockwork Reliquary. Awesome figure, but there are scratches across the "glass" covering the skeleton, one of the legs is not secured to the base. When I tried to push it into the base, the leg broke completely on me.

So, I am overall happy with the figures that I got that are not broken, but the breakages are too much. I had no breakages with the previous sets that I bought full cases of, and these seem to have slipped in durability.

Liberty's Edge

Has anyone else gotten a case with bizarre distribution?

I opened mine last night, and didn't get a single Caedimus, and only one Medium Water Elemental. I was expecting 4 of each common, so to only get a single of one, and none of another was strange. I think there were 7 Clockwork Soldiers and 6 Earth elementals.

For Rares, there are three that I am missing; Amiri,Ardanthus and the Large Air Elemental, but I have 3 Grey Maiden Commanders, 2 Lem, 2 Dullahan, & 2 Mesmalatu. Looking at other reports it looks like a case normally yields one full set with no duplicates, but I have 3 missing Rares with 5 duplicates, including 2 extra GM Commanders, so it looks like I got 2 extra rares out of the deal. How many rares are typical in a case?

My Uncommons were also a little off, since I only got 1 Shreixyx and 1 Ravenous Ooze, but for uncommons that doesn't seem too unlikely. I just can't believe that out of 32 boosters I didn't get one of a common figure.

As an aside I also had 4 broken figures: Mite on Spider with broken arm, Grey Maiden Commander sheared off at the knee and Xin who broke off at the feet. Nothing super serious, but it might be nice if they worked on better plastic or packaging; it seems like the larges getting loose in the case do most of the damage.

Where did you get the Case from? Was it a Closed Case?

reminds me of when i use to play yu-gi-oh.

Just got a brick (which I split with a friend) and I was VERY impressed with these minis. Excellent use of transparent plastic and dynamic poses throughout. There were some real standout paintjobs (like Sheila Heidmarch), and the Clockwork Reliquary was just a sight to behold. The Hill Giant was the only large that didn't impress me. No broken ones - hurrah!

General question - where is the best place on the boards to start a trading thread? I used to do quite a bit of DDM trading, but I don't see much of that happening here. Are there people interested in trading, or do most people order a case and already have at least one of every mini they want?

Liberty's Edge

Regarding the packaging: in RotRL, the half that held the S & M figs had a slot in the shell that, when putting the two halves together, the large base goes in the slot and locks the large mini in. I didn't have a lot of problems with with the packaging, but when I did, it was because it wasn't properly packed with the large locked in the slot.

Is this the same in this set? For those larges that seem to be regularly causing problems, does the packaging have this slot available to lock the large but isn't being used properly?

I've only got a handful of minis I'd want to trade, but I'm sure there are people that would be interested.

I'd love to order a couple of bricks from this set but I can't after seeing all of these breakage issues. I have 2 kids who sometimes drop minis. All of my RotR minis are hanging in like champs. I'll just wait for the next set.
