A great way to play!

5/5

I admit I was skeptical about how useful these would be when I first opened up the Pathfinder Beginner Box, but after using them it's amazing how they just dissolve away and you no longer think about them as these cardboard cutouts. You just see the NPCs or the enemies (in gorgeous detail for that size). It's very clear to me, over the course of two Adventure Paths using only Pathfinder pawns, that it's truly an amazing investment for the price point. I hope Paizo continues to make them!

Good, More Pawns!!

4/5

i buy this one monday 6th at amazon, today it arrives, very hasty timing Cheers for amazon!!

Good pawns, i dont realy care the absence of bases in this expansions, and the fact that pawns haven´t colossal sizes!!

but what can annoying me, is the fact that theres a lot of missing creatures and npcs from this, and rotrl!!

Still a great buy to add to my collection of pawns
-Bestiary
-RotRL
-Skull & Shackless
Waiting for more!!

Ok, I just signed up for the subscription. I hope they keep going with these.

I just want to make sure before I subscribe. I had previously preordered the Bestiary Box set but cancelled because I wouldn't be getting the PDFs and could get the box at my local store instead. However....

If I subscribe right now to the Pawns line and tell it to start with the Bestiary Box. Will I also get the pdf?

Yep!

Just subscribed (had to give up the Deluxe Collectors Edition of RotRL..oh well), and am looking forward to these. They'll be easier for my players to pick out on the battlemat (we play on a huge table!)

I also noticed that the Skull & Shackles set got bumped to November. Not a problem (actually, it'll be easier on my wallet in September!) I imagine that will happen occassionaly.

Anyway, a quick question: I notice that the pawns only go up to Huge size. Any thoughts on a set or two of larger pawns, even up to Colossal? Is that even practical?

Again, looking forward to these!

Does being signed up for the Roleplaying Game or Adventure Path subscription still get you the free PDF for the pawns, or is it now necessary to have the Pawns subscription in order to qualify?

Because there was no Pawns sub when we announced the first four products in the line, we offered a free PDF benefit tied to the subscription that was most appropriate for that product:

Bestiary Box: RPG subscribers
Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection: AP subscribers
Skull & Shackles Pawn Collection: AP subscribers
NPC Codex Box: RPG subscribers

All of that is still true, though those four sets will now *also* provide the free PDF benefit to Pawns subscribers.

Products announced in the line from here on out, though, will *only* provide the benefit to Pawns subscribers.

And that will be showing up in my downloads when, good sir?

It will appear in your downloads at the time your subscription shipment is processed and shipped from our warehouse, just like your other subscriptions.

I have ordered the kingmaker adventure path. How would I best support it with cost-effective minis? What would be the benefit to my campaign if I subscribe?

I suspect that Pawns boxes will ship internationally as 'Games' rather than as Books, making them liable for customs duty in the UK.

This means adding not only the cost of shipping such a heavy box, but a sizeable customs charge (I paid £11.75 - that's around $18 - in customs duty + clearance charge for my Beginner's Box).

Which is why my Bestiary Box was bought through my FLGS.

Nothing Paizo can do about it though.

Just beware if you live in the UK - books don't get duty on them, non-books do...

The Pawns should show up on customs forms as "Dice/Accessories."

Are there any discussion about creating another pawn set for things like traps, fire, poison gas, or doors?

A GM that hosted a PFS game had some that were a DnD promo from a while ago, and they really help when keeping track of things like these on the game boards/mats.

Good idea -- especially the doors.

That is a great idea. I would add things like spell effects that last (ice wall) and other dongeon features.

Although the list of pawns (both in the actual product and on the product web page) show only a single Yeth Hound, there are actually four of these pawns included in the set.

The Exchange

Don't know if this is where I should ask, but here goes:

Looking at the realese dates for the upcoming products in this line, I wonder about the frequency of future realses. That is, it seems like these are coming out REAL SLOW. Are they supposed to come out once evrey 3,4 months?

so my two questions:

1) how fast are these coming out? not talking about the products already announced but about future products

2) will there be pawn collections for older APs? CotCT, Carrion Crown, something along these lines?

I'm with Lord Snow, any chance that some of the older AP's might see a Pawn release? I would love Jade Regent or a Carrion Crown (Carrion Crown would be so re-usable in my home brew) - does Paizo have a view on whether these are a good seller yet?

Erik Mona did comment in other thread that they're barely able to keep up the pace with current AP pawns, so any going backwards needs to wait until time and resources are at hand.

I can see that, and I would go for Bestiary Boxes 2 & 3 over most AP's, but it would be nice to see some intention to backfit for the most popular AP's don't you think?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes.

I noticed that as part of the pre-production image for the S&S AP pawns, there was a Sea Cat. But, once the real live PDF arrived, the only creatures with S&S AP Bestiary entries that had pawns were ones that showed up in the AP adventure.

I know that space is limited and you want to include pawns that will support the AP adventure directly, but I'm also sure that it is going to be a while before the Sea Cat is collected in a bestiary and a pawn is crafted for it.

Any thoughts on including maybe just a single sheet on non-adventure AP bestiary entries in the future AP pawn products? Or maybe a release that focuses on creatures that haven't been collected in a Bestiary book yet?

Does anyone know what weight of cardstock the pawns are printed on?

I realize it's a few months old, but I haven't seen the answer yet. I use Canson hot press board from Hobby Lobby. It's about 2.5-3mm and works great. You'll need a razor knife to cut it because it is too thick for scissors. For huge you'll need to cut out a piece 75mm x 98mm, large 48mm x 63mm, medium 28mm x 48mm and small 20mm x 38mm.

Would Paizo consider selling sheets of blank pawns? I'm thinking it would be cool to have a stack (about the same size as an AP set) that just contains sheets of pre-cut small, medium, large and huge pawn shapes on which I could paste (or even draw) images of monsters that aren't already available as official pawns.

I can haz Kingmaker Pawns set? Pleaze!

Any plans for doing a second "NPC" set, focusing on classes from Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat, and Advanced Class Guide (and possibly the races from Advanced Race Guide if there's room)? The pawns from NPC Codex are often an OK, but not great, fit.

All your recent past and future pawns are for Adventure Paths that you are currently publishing. When are we going to get pawns for past APs?
You publish 2 full APs a year, but it takes some of us a full year to play them.
My group recently started Serpent's Skull. I would like to have pawns for them.

Does anyone know where I can get something to sort the pawns in, something that I could stand them up in rather that put them in baggies?

When the first pawns came out (Bestiary) there was a thread about how to store them. It had some really good ideas - people who could organize them in box or (as I do) a few binders with the clear sheets meant to hold buisness cards or photos.

Yea, that thread is HERE. I posted links to plastic boxes available at Amazon that I use. I have 5 of them (3 with orange tabs, 2 with blue tabs) and when I get the Mummy's Mask set, I will buy another one (orange).

I also copied the listing from Paizo of what was in each box to a file, printed it out and taped it to the top of the box so I know what is in each one.

Is there a possibility to receive Pawn Sets for ealier APs ? It would be great to have some pawns for Jade Regent for example, as many encounters are currently basically unresolvable with current Pawn Sets from the beginning, even not counting unique characters.

Some encounters in part 1, 2:

- It's possible to meet 10 Troglotydes + an advanced troglotyde at one point. Thats a sum of five Bestiary 1 or Beginner Boxes not counting the leader.

- in the same adventure it's also possible to fight againts 10 Dire Corbies at once, if you get them during dinner. Thats would be five Bestiary 3 box. And we also have a Dire Corbie cleric. I would happily proxy her with a tengu, if appropiate tengu characters were available

- in adventure 2 you fight against multiple tengu ninja

As an alternative blank pawn sheets would be acceptable.

So the next one is Iron Gods and I'm guessing the one after will be the Pawns for this latest AP, so what will be the one after that? Starting back at the beginning and slowly working one's way forward with Curse of the Crimson Throne or working one's way backwards from the latest AP that lacks one? Another massive pack for the Inner Sea Bestiary? So curious! So eager!

By far the best way I've found to store Pawns is to buy transparent document protectors - the kind that are normally used to hold entire magazines (purchasable at an Office Depot, Staples, etc.) and just to put the entire sheets, border and all into a protective sleeve. Leaf through them, pop out what you need and when you're done, pop them back in. Its worked out superbly well.

Unfortunately, I discovered this method AFTER I threw away the cardboard borders for Bestiary 1, Bestiary 2, RotRL and SS. I'm actually tempted to rebuy them, just to have the collection organized properly.

Well Skulls & Shackles has pawns now, that means Jade Regent is the next one on the list if they keep going backwards trough the APs like this :D

Do the pawn sets include all monsters in AP bestiaries, or just the ones that are encountered in the adventures?

Serpent wrote:

Not all monsters for either. The most common - and they can't be gargantuan. Multiples of monsters that are more common in packs, never *quite* enough ;)

As to which products... well you can see that based on products available - they do a box for a bestiary, and a smaller pack for an AP.

The AP volumes may have more of a 'common' type (say goblins) if the AP uses large encounters of those.

The AP volumes (with the exception above) don't reprint monsters from the bestiary boxes. So if you have the bestiary boxes and the AP set you have (rough guess) 75% of the monsters you *might* encounter - 100% of the unique NPC enemies (non-combat ally NPCs generally aren't represented) usually any ally NPCs you may need - and overall 90% of the NPCs the players should encounter running the adventure without sidetrips or alternate encounters.

As you can see it's a mix - however from experience I would say the AP sets give you 100% of the major and thematic encounters in an adventure, outside of that you find yourself using 'generic pawn A' to represent the '4th this' or '4th 5th - etc' of that.

With all 4 bestiaries represented it's gotten much better - overall the only thing I'd say I have *too* much of would be yeti's (having all the pawns that is) and the only thing I don't have enough of would be hags (because a coven of the same kind is kind of thematic...) :)

I'm a little disapointed that the pawns aren't released at the same time as the first book of the Adventure Path. Like having the pawns 3 months after the release of the 6th book is kinda sad..

Pathfinder Companion, Pawns Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I agree, Kevin. I'm almost convinced I should postpone HR while I wait for the pawns in March. Granted, most of the first book is easy to do with similar pawns from other boxes (I have bestiary 1, 2, 3, NPC Codex, Mummy's Mask, and Giantslayer). Torn...

Idea for the future - PC Pawn Collection.

A set of pawns for each race that can be used as PCs.
This set would include a male and female pawn for each class.
Or if that would be too many, how about a good sampling?

i bought the inner sea pawn box and what does the color on the numbers mean? what does the numbers?

Silver Crusade

chris> numbers are for finding the one you are looking for from the list on the back (or ensuring it is the one you thought it was).

Color is there for multiples - i hit the red/blue/green one as well as for separating hit point numbers..

the inner sea box what does that pawn box cover do you know

Silver Crusade

not picked it up but i think its a good variety of humanoids for your own adventure or pathfinder society type things rather than like the APs or the bestiary.
If you look at the pink page it shows what kind of selection you get, different priests and hellknights and pathfinders etc - http://paizo.com/products/btpy99sc?Pathfinder-Pawns-Inner-Sea-Pawn-Box

Was really looking forward to setting up a subscription for this until I got to the shipping side of it, I live in the UK the shipping doubles the cost of the order, I'm unfortunatley better off ordering from local book companies here, really wish you had some EU distribution.

The continued existence of this thread confirms that there will be pawns for the Pathfinder Second Edition rpg imo.

Judging from past releases, we should get a "Age of Ashes" pawn collection in early 2020 (probably in march), but i would expect a "Bestiary Box" based on the august 1st hardcover to be the first product in the line, hopefully still in late 2019. :-)
