We don’t actually play PFS, we just use the scenarios and they play as Pathfinders. Yes, I know…blasphemy.

Now I’ve been playing this game for 32 years and I have never had a group so hell-bent on taking prisoners as this bunch. Sometimes it is planned; more often than not it just suddenly comes up. “Revive that guy and ask him what’s going on”. Sometimes they will ask how badly off a downed foe is and if I betray that they’re still bleeding out they’ll heal him just to question him.

So after 4 or 5 sessions straight of this I got tired of stock responses. The players were having so much fun intimidating/charming/toying with the prisoners I figured I’d get in on the fun. As it turns out a stat block is good for getting an idea on how one might react to interrogation. So part of my prep for each scenario is to also look at potential hostages and make a little note on how they might react based on what I see.

I’ve also seen requests on this very site asking if designers can include a section under tactics in the stat block on how they might react to interrogation. It’s something some GM’s want.

So now you have the genesis of why I wrote the “Hold them for questioning” article in this month’s issue. Thanks Saturday players!
Every other Saturday night I have a rotating group of players and I run them through Pathfinder Society Scenarios.
