Perfect Set of Maps to Make Your Superdungeon Come to Life!

5/5

You get a set of 8 flip mats with one level of the Emerald Spire on each side for a total of sixteen levels of Emerald awesomeness. Whether you're planning to run the Emerald Spire live or online, you will need a set of these maps. It makes prep so much easier as all you have to do is drop it down and cover the hidden areas with construction paper for fog of war and you're all set!

The Maps Are Incredible

5/5

I think these maps are the best thing about The Emerald Spire, and that's saying something because the mega-dungeon itself is pretty awesome, too. My players love the detail and layout of these maps. They are a work of art!

Excellent value

5/5

I just unpacked the Emerald Spire maps. They're fantastic. Not the same thing over and over. Some levels seem to have traps or moving rooms. Some feature the emerald prominently, others barely at all. Useful to all GMs.

Superdungeon

Just have to say that I got these in today and they look great. Very happy with them and see endless possibilities for these maps in future campaigns. Great art and detail with each level can't wait to use them.

You can probably expect the 25% merverdiavgift on top of the delivery costs if you go with the physical copies since since I I'm reasonable sure flip-maps qualify as "gaming accessories" instead of "books", but I have no idea how import tax on PDFs would work - it's never been an issue for me since PDFs are typically priced so low the toll is irrelevant.

For printing you basically have two options:

You can divide each map into sections, print them on A4 sheets and cut/tape them together. For 16 maps this is quite work-intensive and the maps will not be very durable. I know people use this method and are perfectly happy with it. Personally I've had poor results with this, especially for maps that are used in multiple sessions. That said, I'm not a "crafty" person so anything that involves a pair of scissors and glue tends to irritate me - YMMV.

You can get them printed in one piece, but this either requires access to a fairly hefty printer (typically only found at photo stores, graphics or printing companies, an art shool etc) or going to a professional printer. The price for getting 16 1x1m color maps printed professionally will most likely be significantly more expensive than just buying the flip-mats.

One last thing - I don't know where in Norway you live so this might not be an option, but in the past Outland have been very helpful for me with importing custom or heavy products - that's how I got all my bestiary/NPC pawn boxes without the otherwise fairly rough shipping costs. If you live near Kr.sand, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim or Oslo I'd visit or give them a call if you haven't already, they might be able to help you out.

Ohh sorry, I meant my group and I would pay together for a physical copy ^^

I tried printing by scanning the pages from the book, and the results were not great, despite me fixing the resolution.

I live in Kristiansand, and the local Outland shop told me that the flip mats are Paizo exclusive and cannot order it for me.
I usually buy Paizo products from them. I would have done the same for Ultimate Psionics, but that book was so expensive for the physical copy, that I rather buy the pdf version this once. :)
The 120 usd for getting this item from Paizo is a fair prize, if I order it soon (if my group helps me) it will arive when I come back home.

I remember that shop well, I visited it often when I lived in Bjørndalsheia! Used to talk fantasy novels with the guys in the register, they're good people. :)

If you're OK with the price (and IMO splitting it with the group is a good approach) then I'd definitely go with the flip mats instead of trying to print it out on your own - you'll save yourself a fair bit of work and get some absolutely gorgeous flip maps.

Norwegian here also. I recommend using www.adlibris.com/no in general for buying RPG items. Much much cheaper than both Outland and Spillsjefen.

As for this map pack it looks like its indeed Paizo shop exclusive. Havent found it in either Amazon shop or anywhere else.

It is.

Seriously interested in this map set...but no way Im making a purchase until samples of every map is posted somewhere.
I keep checking back and figured something would have been up by this point.

There are nice examples in the Emerald Spire hardcover or PDF. If you don't have that, you probably don't need this product either.

Do you have the emerald spire? The maps are all in it.

The image quality is similar to other PDF flip-mats - have you had any experience printing other flip-mats?

I have not. But any additional information you can provide would be appriciated.

I am leaning on buying the flipmat from this site, but the whole group will chip in this time. I wonder if this item has to be taxed in Norway or not. An addtional 20 usd is not a lot.

I've printed out flip-mats directly from Acrobat Reader and using the tiling or poster print options. I believe the more up to date versions of Adobe calls the option poster. Then use the print preview to see how it will split up the pages. The resolution paizo has it set up prints out the perfect size if you don't have Adobe fit it to a single page.

Then I cut them up and tape them together. For added benefit I will put them in a poster top loader that is larger than 24" x 32" which allows me to write "on" the maps with wet erase and clean it up later.

I priced out printing the maps on a printer that is extra wide so it could come out as a single sheet and one place wanted to charge me about $30 per page which was way too much.

Are they somehow so ultra-specific that you couldn't make your own dungeons on these layouts?

Well probably you could, OK.

cool...thanks for the pics. Definitely going to buy the set

I hope there's some of these to pick up @ Gencon!

The main thing that makes them less generic is a big green circle, which has a specific use in the Superdungeon.

Looking at the samples posted, it doesn't seem like the green circle is so dominant that I couldn't repurpose the maps if I wanted to. Thumbs up.

Regarding "fog of war":

I dump about 120 black circles, about 2" diameter, on the board. They're made of construction paper, and they do a good job of (a) hiding the mystery areas of the dungeon level, (b) moving out of the way when light and eyes show up, and (c) shifting to re-obscure the parts of the dungeon the party has left.

Are the PDF maps interactive?
Can I hide the squares?

Anyone looked at using this for homebrew games? I GM a lot of pickup games, and I've been thinking of using this just so I can have a real grab-bag of maps for whatever situation my players run into. Is this a crazy notion? Are the maps to specific to the Emerald Spire Megadungeon?

Tali Zephyr wrote:

The maps are the same images found in the Emerald Spire PDF, but in significantly higher resolution and stripped of room designations and icons. They are not interactive.

All the maps implement the spire to some degree, so there will be a 20 ft by 20 ft green circle somewhere. Apart from that, they're quite varied and could easily be re-purposed for home games. If you want to take a closer look, you can see all 16 maps in the sample selection at the top of this page. :)

This was a Paizo.com exclusive—you're not going to find it in a retail store. I would check eBay or similar auction sites (unless you can convince somebody to part with theirs).

Has anyone taken these to Kinkos or wherever to have printed and/or laminated? If so, how much did it run you?

Any idea on a more specific date as to when they will be back in stock?

We are just sending them to reprint now so I don't have more than a guesstimate and that would be June. I can jump back into this thread once I have a better date but to be honest, with the port congestion issues we're all experiencing, even my better date will still be an estimate.

Its cool I totally understand, I just want to make sure i don't miss it this time.

Vic, any ETA on the new order of the flip mats yet? Looking to run Emerald Spire starting in a few weeks, and it would be great to be able to use the maps.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

Last I heard, we were hoping they'd be here by PaizoCon at the end of May.

I was surprised these were reprinted - presumably that means they sold much better than expected? Fingers crossed that will count as evidence in favor of a megadungeon AP one day. :)

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

They did sell quickly, but more importantly, our printer's volume discount takes into account the size of the product as a whole, meaning that on this one product, we can get our usual pricing when reprinting just 1/8th of the normal quantity.

Ahh...I see. Thanks, Vic.

Backordered it now for the waiting.

WooHoo!!!

Does floor 6 allow the rotating tiles to rotate, or are the fixed? I've never used flip mats, thus the question.

Sovereign Court

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber

Sadly, they are fixed. (It also shows some of the traps and secret doors. These maps are essentially identical to the images at the start of each chapter.)

Grand Lodge

Has the first floor map been fixed? We got our pack for our games, and the GM was surprised when he learned it wasn't to scale.

Sovereign Court

Wait, the first floor map isn't to scale? What are you talking about?

Grand Lodge

Iammars wrote:

Our GM bought the map pack a few months ago for the PFS lodge here and was rather upset that every level from 2-16 was perfect to scale, but the first level had smaller squares than that of a mini's base. He ended up printing the PDF at 110% scale and using that instead.

Any time anyone here considers buying the pack, he immediately does what he can to talk them out of it.

Sovereign Court

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Card Game, Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I think that it's just an error with his level 1 map. I just tested mine and the scaling looked fine. The one-inch minis fit nicely inside the squares.
