My 2nd favorite set (from 10) so far!

5/5

This second set is the best after set #9 (Dungeons Deep).
Why?
-There is not a single 1 star miniature in this set. Even the baddest ones get 2 stars from me.
-Of the 14 LARGE minis none is so unique that you can´t use it in other adventures. Some are quite essential ones. The worst one gets 3 stars!
-The only set to include HUGE miniatures!!! One of those is 5 stars, one is 4 stars, one 3 stars and one 2 stars.
-The diversity. This set has every kind of creature from Abberation to Undead. 64 creatures that make up one of the most most memorable campaigns in the history of Roleplaying!

mostly good

4/5

I got my case a couple weeks ago. Of course it doesnt come with a mini for every creature you encounter but most the gaps can he filled with a pawn or a paper mini. I was surprised that judge ironbriar didnt have a mini though. This is as far as i am in the AP so hopefully the rest of the tough guys have minis.

The rune giant would be flawless and one of my favorite pieces if not for his eyes being to close together, leaving him looking... lets say, simple. I also have a issue with the ogrekin. The book has awesome artwork for these monsters but the mini set gives you a generic looking ogerkin. Not a fan. I understand they do this so that you can use the same one for every encounter, but I'd rather have separate ones that look as awesome as the art.

On the upside most the rest of the pieces are pretty nice. The female sorcereSS, dwarf ranger, amieko, and several others are all excellent quality and i will use them for many more games after runelords. The stone giants, forgefiend, and the ogre brute are some of my favorites. And the rune giant is still awesome, even though he looks like he rode the short bus

Duplicate Brick

So I bought a brick of Rise of the Runelords; I quite enjoyed them and was planning on using them when I run my Rise of the Runelord Anniversary Adventure Path. I went out and bought another brick (from a different store) and I got exactly the same models with no exceptions. I am hugely disappointed by this as I expected some randomization. Maybe someone at the factory needs to be talked to. I don't have the money to go buy more at the moment and I don't even want to as I fear the same thing might happen again.

TPK-Online Review - Good or Great

4/5

I did a review of the minis on my site, here. They're good, but probably better if you're running Rise of the Runelords.

My Rise of the Runelords booster experience.

5/5

I'll also mention that I am running RotR for my Sunday group (really only 2 sessions into it) and while I had to drop out of the case subscription, I found myself with the ability (and money) to buy 3 standard boosters and 3 huge boosters ... and I'm not sorry I did. :)

Let me quickly add in here SPOILER ALERT!!!! (and perhaps this next behind a spoiler tag)

Spoiler:
I was really happy to have gotten not only Ameiko Kaijitsu, but Tsuto Kaijitsu as well. It's very likely that my next session will have the Glassworks Encounter ... so it's super awesome to have the Kaijitsu siblings (I have PLENTY of goblins thanks to Heroes & Battles).
Other goodness includes a goblin dog, a yeti, a faceless stalker, a goblin commando and a redcap. For my HUGES I got the storm giant and the lamia harridan, as well as
Spoiler:
the Karzoug Statue.
The other two larges I got (for those keeping count) I think I'll "spoiler" tag 'em as well, they are important "big bads" in later parts of the AP.
Spoiler:
Jaagrath Kreeg and Mokmurian. Speaking of big bads, I also got the skinsaw man and vraxeris.
So, all in all very, very pleased with what I got. If I can afford more boosters in the near future (or somehow afford the case bundle) I will take the plunge. Maybe even buy a few singles of a few "key" villains of chapter 1 that I didn't get. ;) ***And before someone kindly points it out that I may not have a lot of time before I can still "subscribe" to this set ... due to limited premium Rune Giant "miniatures" ... it's a risk I'll have to take.***

Well can't seem to find a Rune Giant in the UK at all and also found it impossible to buy a sealed case.

I bought a handful of the minis I really wanted (Harsk, Shalelu, Ameiko, Kobold Champion and Lamia Matriarch) along with one booster. And that booster included the Wendigo, Warchief Ripnugget and Tsuto. Since those were close to the three I most wanted I'm pretty stoked! Now I just need to get myself a Seoni figure to keep my iconic collection going...

I also really wanted to keep up with the iconics, I didn't get Harsk, but one of my players did. With the aid of one of the other players who is a union negotiator, I was convinced into swapping a bonus draw from the Harrow Deck (optional rule in carrion crown) in addition to another mini to get my Harsk. I'm way to addicted to this plastic crack.

You are not alone. I have bought way more then I should have so far.

Dark Archive

Finally got my case from a online retailer.

Missing 2 minis, Chief Ripnugget and the Mithril Mage. I also had three boosters each missing 1 mini. Kind of lame of the commons I only got one Harpy,Bugbear Hero and Lamia Kuchrima.

But overall I am pretty happy with the case. I will be buying a second case late this month or early next month in hopes of getting some more of the commons and the 2 I am missing.

I couldn't find a "RotRL Miniature Case Report" thread, so it looks like this is the only thread where these are being recorded. If there is a separate thread for this please let me know.

Overall Comments:

1) I am firstly happy to report that no minis were broken. It almost seems to me that the "plastic" these minis are made out of is a bit more pliable than the H&M minis. (3 of the large minis popped off their bases but these were a quick fix. Both of my stone golems had popped off, as did my Forgefiend)

2) I did not get 2 of the rares. I'm sort of disappointed, but I'm actually more disappointed that I did not get more sinspawn (1 sinspawn and 2 sinspawn axemen). These are common rares and in a set themed for RotRL, I sort of expected to get more of these guys.

3) I really don't notice much correlation between "common" minis and "uncommon" minis. The average of how many commons (2.6 / case) I received is basically the same as the average of uncommons (2.3 / case).

The Results:

Same here. I love the set, paint jobs are really nice. Unfortunatly, i am missing 2 minis(Aldern Foxglove and Warchief Ripnugget).

I also had 4 minis that were broken (nothing a little glue couldn't fix though).

The worse thing though is the Rune Giant. what's up with those pants?!?

Oh well, overall, a really nice set, but a bit on the costly side.

Dark Archive

I am NOT objecting to the price of each individual figure but would prefer a smaller set with a smaller price tag. I think that is what a lot of other people are trying to say as well. $400 was a lot to spend at once considering I didn't get a full set in my case (missing 4). I would much rather spend $300 and get a smaller set (less sculpts). The figures look great and I will keep buying either way but it does make budgeting much more difficult with the larger more expensive sets.

Grand Lodge

I guess I count myself lucky and thankful that I had no broken minis and a complete set from my case.

Since I am running RotR, this set is over-the-top awesome for me. To have a beautiful set of minis, and to immediately begin to use them in the campaign I am running is nothing short of special. Yes! I am gushing. I have been collecting pre-painted minis since DDM Harbinger. And this IMHO is the best most useful set of minis I own. Even the least useful mini to me, Seoni, happens to be one of the most gorgeous minis I have ever seen in PPM. YMMV. But I am getting mileage better than an electric.

Cheers,

Mazra

I agree this is what people are baulking at, but my question (to them) is: Why not just buy three bricks (or similar) from the larger sets?

You'll pay less than for a full case, for a smaller number of minis, chosen from a smaller number of potential sculpts. The only difference is the singles market will have greater choice available.

"but I'm missing out on some figures" is a misleading argument - if the set is smaller you'll get your figures from 40 potential sculpts, just the same as if you buy a limited number of cases from the larger sets. The fact that other people will be buying more sculpts than you is nothing but a psychological "loss", isn't it?

Grand Lodge

I did not buy a case, but I just got my hands on some sinspawn. I am a bit disappointed that they have axes instead of ranseur since that is what is stated in their block in the Bestiary. Having the ability to switch between the unarmed and armed versions would have been nice visually. Not having played RotRL AP, I assume it is because they are often equipped with axes instead of pole arms.

RotRL spoiler

Spoiler:
Yeah, in Rise the only time I remember seeing a sinspawn with a weapon they had greataxes. Most of the time, they were unarmed and used their natural weapons.

possible Rune Giant for ya?:

Good Luck sir :)

Liberty's Edge

I got 100% completion. One of my two Forgefiends was off his base. It will be very easy to glue back together though.

Well the goood news is I managed to find one on E-Bay on this side of the Atlantic which cost me £28/$42 plus postage..and with a bit off luck ~I'll pick up rthe remaining figures as singles over the next few weeks

I received my full case today. Random thoughts after unboxing:

Distribution worked for me. I have a complete set plus some spares. Would have loved a second Lamia Harridan, but instead got two of what I perceive to be the weakest figure in the set, the chocolate, err, storm giant. Sigh.

I'm very happy with how they reduced the packaging to what is really necessary. Still a lot of stuff to throw in the trash, but better that then having half of my minis bent and broken on arrival.

That being said: Several minis had come unglued from their bases (easily fixable, but still). This was largely the case with several Dire Bears (i.e., one of the heaviest Larges in the set). One Alu-fiend had their wings broken off by another Medium miniature that had come loose inside the packaging. Several bent swords, but those can be fixed.

I wonder why the two plastic trays inside the boosters were not put in NOT facing each other. That would surely reduce the risk of one figure damaging the others?

Paint jobs are superb for the most part, with some notable exceptions (Storm Giant, Ameiko).

I would rate this set 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's as expensive as no previous mini set I ever bought, but it really is worth the price of admission. Having to pay for shipping as well as an additional EUR 120 for taxes and customs, however, sucks ... I really want to continue supporting Paizo directly and therefore keep my submission going, but not having any way to order the cases on the other side of the atlantic while keeping a subscription is hardly ideal.

I believe the distribution of the huge cases is fixed, 2x treachery demons, 2x storm giants, 1x harridan, 1x statue

Rune Giant=Seriously impressive figure..I'm glad I shelled out for it.

Liberty's Edge

Regarding the two plastic insets, they appear to have been made to go into the box a specific way: facing each other with the base of the large mini sliding into the slot of the med/small inset. I'm sure in the rush to put them into boxes, this detail was often overlooked.

Just to chime in about figures coming off bases. This has been more common than Wizkids is happy with, so they will be attempting to make changes with Shattered Star to fix this.

.

I am glad to see WizKids is taking steps necessary to resolve the issue. However, I make the request to please 'not' go the DDM route and have the figures as part of the base. One thing I really like about the Pathfinder Battles minis is the bases are truly flat and sit well on the table for the larger sized minis. With my DDM larger minis, the bases had a tendency to warp and would never sit right (if they warped) no matter how much you tried to fix it.

I like that these sit flat to the table.

Grand Lodge

Full set here (had to open the last box to get the last one though)

just fo rthe records : forgefiend and another medium were off base (but nothing broken)

great mini's. a bit expensive for a bi-yearly set (if all sets reach that point) but great work !

thanks for the good works and congrats for both companies.

Grand Lodge

Off the base is not a huge problem. A little glue can take care of that. Broken minis or a warped base is a bigger issue. We have not seen either of these issues much in the RotR set. So please don't throw the baby out with the bath water. ;)

Cheers,

I'm not complaining, just confirming the feeling that it occurs 'often'

... and I don't think Mazra's post was directed at you - it was a general comment reacting to Lisa's statement about them looking at it - Mazra wants Wizkids to be careful not to have some of the problems that the Wizards minis did in trying to solve the comparitvely minor base problems.

The breakages in this set are a major issue, in my view. I hope they continue with the rigid bases, nonetheless I personally don't want to buy a set of minis expecting some to break off when I pull them out of the packaging.

Hopefully Wizkids will find a decent solution.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, my comment was more general, it was not aimed at you Vrischika 11. It is as Enlight says, to not look at DDM style bases as a solution. But I also agree with Steve's point, that it would be best to have fewer of these issues. More glue? I really don't know if that is the answer. RotR is an incredible set of minis. My concern is only that in an effort to correct this issue, that a solution does not effect the quality we have seen in future sets.

Cheers,

Mazra

Maybe I don't understand what is going on with these figures. I can pay 25 dollars for a huge booster - and NOT know what is inside?

Why would I do that?

Yeah, I've been kind of bummed by his myself. I picked up some booster packs at my FLGS and so far I had one large mini that had broken off it's base and one medium mini where only the base itself was in the box.

The delays in shipping the Rune Giant and Huge Boosters to my FLGS have also been an annoyance.

It doesn't sound like a great deal. I would agree.

But you can buy a case of Huge for 20 dollars a booster. You will know that you will get 2 Treachery Demons, 2 Storm Giants, a Lamia Harridan and a Karzoug Statue. I realize some people can't afford it, but case buying is a good way to go. The singles market is another.

Rather strangely, TrollandToad.com sell blind huge boosters for $20 each and individual, visible, huge minis for $15, $16, $17 or $22, depending on which one you want.

(I guess that pricing structure wont last for long though).

Got mine today and just finished inventorying. Got the complete set, 2 broken off the base, 4 loose from the base (one contact point unglued). Overall I have to say I'm more impressed with this set than the last. The ogres are astonishing. I have the same complaints as have been stated by others here. Storm Giant.... whaa? But yeah, the rest were fantastic, I love the named figures, love the Stone Giants, loved... Well, just about everything else. Price tag was a bit steeper than I'd have liked, but I'll get by on ramen til payday. Priorities. Still think the blind booster pack of one mini is foolish, but obviously, more experienced minds have decided otherwise, and as long as I'm buying by the case, it doesn't really affect me.

Anyway, very pleased with the product at the end of the day, glad my box finally arrived.

Got my case. Complete set. One off the base. None broken. A spectacular set of minis.

I got two wendigo! The savage north just got savage-ier.

and my 32s all are bent.

There is a trick to straightening out swords and staves on miniatures like this. Take some hot tap water... as hot as you can physically stand it on your hand. Dip the mini in for about 20-30 seconds, pull it out and then straighten the object and hold it until it cools down or run it under cold water (cold water is faster).. viola.. straight :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Similar to the hair drier method:

Hold the mini about 2 inches from the exhaust of a hair drier on high/hot until the part is soft. Pose as you wish and then quickly immerse in ice water.

Not permanent, but close to it.

Use caution with this method. I melted the glue holding the arm this way. It glued back in place with no problem though, and a straight sword. Admittedly, as a clean freak, I have my water very hot.

I pre-ordered the full set from Solarfly. The last I heard from them was on 9-22 saying it should be in the mail the following week. As of today nothing, and they haven't responded to my last two emails about it. Anyone else having similar issue?

I would like to know this as well. I had a Seoni with an arm completely missing.

I would try http://www.wizkidseventsystem.com/pls/apex/f?p=327:101: since that is the URL for heroes and monsters

http://wizkidsreplacementsystem.com/ is the place to go.

I actually picked up four more boosters over the Weekend at a local con in Tucson, AZ (couldn't say no at the price...counting GMing credit I got them for $5.30/booster), and I also received two figures off their bases. Thankfully, a dab of cyanoacrylate fixed 'em.
