A great battle map and an island?

***( )( )

Have to agree with the reviewer below. I think the shoreline map in this one is simply brilliant. There is just enough of both land and sea to run an effective encounter using both terrains. The other side doesn't look like a battle map, without the small hut to indicate that it is designed for miniatures use you could be excused for thinking it was a scale map of a much larger island.

One side brilliant other side lame

***( )( )

Luv the back side. I use it for ocean shore and river encounters.
The island is wayyyy to contrived and specific.

Best Flipmat Yet

*****

This is what I would like to more of from this series: maps that have different yet complimentary images on each side. (We all have plenty to choose from with blank surfaces on the reverse side at this point.) In this case we get a small island on one side and a sandy beach on the other.

Unlike the maps of buildings and structures, the inclusion of only one tiny room on the island-side makes it very easy to use a more ambiguous scale with this map. Using a 5-foot scale, you get a nice little hideaway with small trees and scrub. Need something bigger for actual exploration? Treat the sqaures as large to colossal and simply use a token to represent the entire party. For encounters then just "zoom in" using other maps in your collection.

The only improvement I could hope for would be to finally be able to acquire these without the folds. Naturally, something like that wouldn't be feasible for shipping, although with GenCon and DragonCon around the corner, perhaps unfolded maps could be convention-only specials...

How's this one going to work? Given the size of a Flip Mat, will it be beach on one side and jungle on the other?

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Good question!
I would guess: Beach on 1 side and Pirate Outpost on the other... It is afterall a Pirate Beach flip-mat ;)

Bump

You are very close. I just met with the team on this one yesterday. Think LOST.

I've added a preview image that reflects the finished product.

(As soon as the art staff gets a chance—hopefully in a few weeks—we'll be going through all of our Flip-Mat listings and adding full preview images of both sides of each map.)

I there by any chance an adventure (PFS maybe?) planned that uses the island side? Because that would be awseome!

Josh is out of the country right now so he can't answer, but he has a habit of being very efficient in using Paizo resources like this in Society scenarios.

Cool!

The first encounter for the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path does indeed take place on a beach—the beach side of this flip mat is more or less designed for that encounter (although we didn't have room to reprint that map inside the adventure itself, alas...).

Wahoo! Thanks for posting a preview, Vic.

Nice! The whole island could either be used as a small island at 5' scale or a larger island at a different scale using little pirate boats or something for tactical encounters. Sweet.

Very nice!!!

Very intriguing. I assume that the scale is not necessarily one block equals feet feet for the entire island, eh?

I look at this and think... 5 foot crater? Of course that's wrong... look at the trees right?

It's hard to tell because the thumbnail is so small. There's that little building down there... it just doesn't look right next to the tiny volcano.

So what's the scale?

I don't believe any of our Flip Maps have ever listed a scale you HAVE to use them at - that's really up for you to decide (who are we to say you can't use Flip Mat: Dungeon as a giant's lair with a scale of 20 ft per square?). When we design these, though, we typically assume 5-foot squares. That makes the pirate isle an easily overlooked little hideaway, and its smoking geyser just that. If you want to want to turn that geyser into an honest volcano fit for tribal sacrifices and heathen rituals, totally feel free to spin your stories that way and employ the map however works best for you.
