Strong initial role-play sandbox, 2nd half needs extra prep

****( )

Point of view: GM twice

The story is good and the setup is good. The first half is a 5 star scenario with multiple ways to perform the initial investigation giving it a slight sandbox feel and strong role-playing elements.

However the second half needs extra GM prep to make it coherent. One of the creatures is also inappropriate for many subtier 1-2 parties so GMs will have their work cut out to make that a proportional challenge. The first time I ran that encounter there were PCs standing around unable to contribute and the second time it took ages and slowly ground the party down so it could have gone either way (three PCs on zero HP at one point).

I expect player experience of this scenario to vary from a 3 to 5 star experience depending on party subtier, party makeup and the amount of prep the GM has done.

As noted elsewhere GMs should read the authors comments and the GM thread before running.

Great Module, But Read it Twice!

***( )( )

So this is a module that's great for those who have players who have done all of the Blakros Museum series. (Especially if they hate the place.) This module is a lot of fun, and with a table full of people who HATE the Blakros and you have a good time.

The only downside, is the way the mechanics work, is just really insanely bad. The maps are a little tough to navigate, and the stat blocks could have been built a little more level appropriate. This is one of those modules you will definitely need to read twice, and then do some modifications as needed based on the type of party you end up with. But it's totally worth it.

Evil atmosphere and interesting story

*****

This is one of my favourites. The GM has all the necessary story to create a dramatic and terrifying start and an intriguing detective story and finish with a puzzling raid on a wizard's tower. What more could you want?

Some encounters need sensible handling by the GM to make them suitable challenges for all parties and the navigation through the adventure fooled me until I read a helpful explanation posted by the Author. But don't be put off by that. Follow those hints and your players will love it!

Dangerous, but fun

***( )( )

I've GM'd this four times now and the tier 4-5 is challenging, but not overly deadly. A very devious GM can push a couple of the encounters to make them very difficult, but assuming that your party is a balanced group, they should be fine. There is a lot of role-play opportunities and a nice mix of enemy types and environments.

The tier 1-2 version is a good challenge for level two PC's, but is largely beyond the skill of an all 1st-level party.

GM Only:
The animated statue has hardness, lots of hit points, and two attacks. While its AC is low, there is a very good chance your party may be unable to defeat it. Heck, they may not even be able to damage it. Be very careful.

Also, the BBEG seems to have a poor build. He has a cool class-based buff that cannot trigger because he has no spells that it would apply to. The 4-5 version is just okay, but the 1-2 version is poorly built.

One of the faction missions can only be completed (per the text) if you fail a saving throw. Essentially, this means if the PC's avoid the issue, or succeed at the saves, you could fail the mission. IMO, poor design.

This scenario has some nice aspects and an interesting plot/theme. I really like the mix of monsters and environments, but there are some unbalanced challenges and the monsters could use another round of development.

Decent, not outstanding

***( )( )

Ran this on Friday. It starts really interestingly and the players got nicely drawn into the initial mystery. Unfortunately, it degenerates into something quite generic - in fact, more so than the other Season 3 Tier 1-5 scenarios so far.

Most encounters were interesting with the exception of a poorly designed one that could be impossible for some groups, and just plain tedious for most others. Another one might also be quite deadly for first-level groups, although my six-player mostly-second-level party managed it without much trouble.

Musuem is not a word.

More Blakros Museum, yay. Also, I'm amused that the title echoes Echoes of the Everwar.

More Blackros Museum? We should just burn the place and be done with it...

It was built by an ancient wizard, so it's fireproof. Besides, maybe it's not all in the museum.

Still, we need an adventure path with relationship mechanics in them with them so they can have our kids. That way, they'll be too busy to open interdimensional gateways two seasons out of four.

Heh,

Reading this again I came off a little more hostile to Blakros museum adventures than I intended.

FWIW I actually like the museum adventures. I just think (more or less IC) that the place is just jinxed. :)

I hope that the scenario lives up to your every expectation.

My animosity towards the place comes from:

Kind of spoils your day...

Seriously though I look forward to this one. :)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Now that we have 4 Blackros Museum modules...I demand a Museum flip mat!

And monkeys.

That is all.

I just realized I scheduled to run this for my group after Mists of Mwangi by pure coincidence. I hope it turns out to be awesome.

You should really play the whole set before it:

Mists- Season 0
Voice in The Void- Season 1
The Penumbral Accords - Season 2

But I agree, I love running the museum, but as a player.. I hate the place.

Hmmm... I'm wondering how well this will work for a Halloween scenario... We play every monday, and it looks like we'll all be able to play next monday...

Any info on why this was pushed back two weeks? I was really hoping to run this Monday for Hallowe... I mean Jestercap... :(

We'll have it up as soon as it's ready! In the meantime, don't forget to check out the Beginner Box Bash events that are taking place this weekend.

Yeah I have this scheduled to run on the 5th for a group that's 1/2 newbies and 1/2 people who have played all the other 1-5s... looks like I'm figuring something else out....

I'd love to, if there were any in Michigan, but sadly there are not.

So, this was originally scheduled for October release. I know it got pushed back, and was listed as coming out today. Now it simply says "Unavailable."

What happened? Is this not coming out this month? I have it and #3-08 on the schedule for the middle of the month, and thought that would be enough time to get things sorted out. Now I'm worried...

As far as I've seen this happens somewhat often on the day that a scenario is supposed to come out.

To me it's quite appropriate that

Spoiler:

the most dangerous encounter in the module is the defence old Beldrin left in his tower, which has already defeated the bad guy and one party of Pathfinders.

They probably decided to play up.

If a party has no cleric at tier 3-4

Spoiler:
how do they get past the haunt?

To address some gamemasters' frustration about the difficulty of drawing the scenario's maps, I have uploaded some revised maps on the Cartographer's Guild site. While they're laid out as closely as possible to the originals, I shifted the grid. I hope that people will find them helpful.

Echoes Maps

When running this adventure, I also keep a cardboard jig cut out to match the tower's curved walls. With it, I can draw the maps much more quickly.

Spoiler:
Some parties need to just get the heck out. Others have used cure light wounds on the haunt's apparent focus, the scholar's corpse. THat seemed reasonable, so I allowed it to wprk when I was GM.
