Ninja versus Vikings!

Chapter 2: "Night of Frozen Shadows"
by Greg A. Vaughan

A faceless menace stalks the viking empire. For decades a sinister band of assassins has watched and waited, hiding among the rugged people of Kalsgard, capital of the fierce Lands of the Linnorm Kings. In all this time their mysterious prey has lain hidden away, but no longer. With their quarry revealed, death stalks the streets of a city of hardy warriors and viking raiders. Having traveled from distant lands to this notorious city, the heroes prepare to take their first steps on an expedition into some of the world’s most ferocious wilderness. Yet nothing is ever easy in dangerous Kalsgard, and soon they find themselves targeted by mysterious assassins. Can the heroes defend themselves and their friends from the blades of supernatural killers? Or will they meet their ends amid the ice and snow?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path includes:

  • “Night of Frozen Shadows,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 4th-level characters, by Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A trek through the crowded and deadly streets of Kalsgard, frigid capital of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, by Matthew Goodall.
  • Insights into the ways and worship of the goddess Shelyn, deity of beauty, love, and music, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Murder and mystery in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Dave Gross.
  • Four new monsters, by Jesse Benner and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Good First Half, Meh Second Half

3/5

Like a lot of modules, this one has somewhat inconsistent quality. The section where the PCs are investigating Kalsgard is pretty fun. They're trying to secure a guide and solve a mystery while all the while trying to elude the notice of a shadowy ninja organization. The Notoriety system is a cool idea, where the PCs will slowly attract the notice of the ninjas. Notoriety is gained slowly at the beginning, and much, much more quickly later, with increasingly severe consequences. The idea is cool, but the execution can be lacking a bit and it might fall flat at your table. The first issue is that Notoriety might be gained so slowly that your table completes the investigation before anything bad or interesting happens. This would be a shame, because the Notoriety scenarios are pretty cool, and I think do a good job of making it feel like the PCs are under siege by forces that they cannot effectively strike back at. Even if your players do manage to gain Notoriety, it feels unlikely that there's enough time for the effects listed in the book to come to fruition, unless your players are really inefficient. The reason is that the investigation, as written, really doesn't take that long in-game. So chances are, the PCs will gain some Notoriety, but will avoid the stuff that happens when the Notoriety gets really high. The problem is, a lot of the really cool stuff happens at really high Notoriety.

The Kalsgard investigation is pretty entertaining. I liked how it took players on a tour through Ulfen culture. It really did feel like it did a lot with a very interesting setting. You do have to pay attention to the investigation and do a lot of work to make sure that there aren't dead ends, or red herrings, or to make sure the players don't skip steps and do it out of order, which is very easy for them to do. It's a a sandbox scenario, but without quite enough content to make the sandbox work as well as it should.

Luckily, Kalsgard is a great setting if you'd like to add stuff, and I would highly recommend adding stuff. Delaying the investigation beats lets the Notoriety pile up, and helps avoid the players solving the whole thing in 2-3 in-game days.

The final dungeon is just ok. It isn't as good as Brinewall from the first module. A lot of the encounters feel repetitive, and if the PCs leave to rest, they'll restock with more repetitive encounters. This makes sense from a story perspective, but in game terms it's not a lot of fun and I handwaved the reinforcement mechanics away. It's not a bad dungeon or anything; rather, it just feels average. When one considers the lore of the dungeon, it feels like there could have been a lot more going on inside.

The actual module is hard to rate. My players had a blast with the module, but it was mostly due to stuff that was added. However, the sandbox nature of the adventure and the coolness of the locale make homebrewing some sections easy. As with all APs modules, some work needs to be done to make the story smoother, but it's not very difficult to do so. So I'll say that the first half is a fun playground to add whatever you want, and the final dungeon needs some love to make it pop more.

Non-sensical, dreadful writing; must skip

1/5

This might be the most lazily, poorly written module I've ever read. Both you and your players will hate this. You won't lose anything by making your own Jade Regent part 2, as next to nothing happens, and you already know the macguffin you'll end up with. I'll keep it short:

* Every location and encounter had as much thought and detail as someone saying "how cool are ninjas?". No effort put into making this interesting/engaging at all.
* No motivations or backgrounds for any NPC/villain. Zero. Names and stat blocks only. Enjoy homebrewing that into a convoluted plot.
* Railroading the PCs, in the worst possible way - that is, the writer thinks it's not. His go to method of trying to make it an open world, is to limit anything the PCs can learn, and keep them confused. Not interested, mind you, just confused. This could be forgivable, if it weren't for the huge leaps in logic that the players are supposed to make.
* Opportunities for RP and investigation are extremely limited. Most only exist because you're in Kalsgard. Guess what? You can be in Kalsgard and not do this module!

Summary: you will hate this, but not as much as your players.

A solid follow up, runs well in PbP

4/5

Like many GMs, I run the bulk of my games in a Play-by-Post format, and my gaming group and I have never physically met. We are, however, attempting to become the first group to ever successfully complete a Paizo Adventure Path in PbP over on Myth-Weavers.com, and Night of Frozen Shadows was our second stop on that journey.

Part One of Jade Regent, The Brinewall Legacy, was probably my personal favorite module ever. Paizo really brought its A-game on that adventure, and it flowed effortlessly from a simple kill the goblins mission to the beginnings of a globe-trotting, epic campaign to save a people and restore the honor of an exiled noble family. It was always going to be a tough act to follow.

In Night of Frozen Shadows, we have a follow up that goes for a different feel than its predecessor. Where Brinewall was tightly scripted and a bit of a railroad, Frozen Shadows takes more of a sandbox route. It was also an investigation heavy module, wherein the players seek out clues and attempt to recover an artifact important to the noble family they find themselves in service to.

Along the way are plenty of opportunities for in-depth role-playing, and some great set piece battles.

Did I mention that in this module there are ninjas and vikings at the same time? I should probably mention that. The battle where the ninja initially show themselves was a very memorable one.

Difficulty wise, I found most of the encounters in this module underpowered vs. my melee heavy group, but increasing the difficulty of these encounters was usually no tougher than adding a few more bad guys.

The end battle, however, proved to be very tough and the BBEG of the module nearly caused a TPK. We played it straight, but it was a nail biter and the PCs just barely made it out alive.

In all, though I made more modifications to this module than the last, I find that Paizo's adventures support that kind of thing, and their flexibility is a feature in my mind, not a bug.

Likewise, I thought the change of pace from the first module was also a good thing. The city of Kalsgard that served as a setting for the bulk of this module was well fleshed out in this installment and my group had fun exploring it.

The only modifications I had to make for PbP were the cutting and / or consolidating of encounters in the end dungeon, but that is pretty standard (and something I’d recommend for my fellow PbP GMs.)

In all, I'd give Night of Frozen Shadows 4.5 stars if I could, but since I already maxed out my vote for The Brinewall Legacy, and this module wasn't quite as much to my liking, I'm going to go with four. It was a solid second installment for what is shaping up to be a great campaign.

Not the best in the series

2/5

I really didn't like this module. To me it felt like a drag as my players were really anticipating getting to Tian Xia and had to waste their low-mid levels here with Vikings. I love vikings! I want a Viking AP but here they feel like a burden rather than the highlight something like that should be.

Pros
- Being in Karlsgaard opens opportunities to RP
- If your into the caravan rules (which Im not) you get to go into the bookkeeping of buying and selling stuff
- Tengu Ninjas
- The theme of corruption fleshes out more

Cons
- Several silly and annoying encounters - one of which is a TPK in the waiting.
- Another big ol' castle

Huh. I was certain Vaughan would be doing part 3 or part 4. It'll be interesting to see how the author line continues to shape up!

Nope.

It's part 2 of an AP. While 50 volumes is certainly a benchmark, it's not really appropriate to do something "special" with. AP #10 is probably a better place to do something wild and crazy... which would be Pathfinder #61.

Not to be a nitpicker, but wouldn't the AP following Jade Regent be the 10th? So, that would be #55? ;-)

Shelyn?!? I wasn't expecting that. I figured that you'd go with Torg in this AP since there are so many Dwarves in the Land of the Linorm Kings.

We went with Shelyn partially because the primary NPC of the campaign is a bard who worships Shelyn, and because unlike Torag, Shelyn is also worshiped in Tian Xia.

Makes sense, thanks.

edit* Also good to know that the "bard" worships Shelyn since I'm starting up RotRL soon.

Interesting, so Shelyn is worshiped in Tian Xia.

Not terribly surprised. It will be interesting to see which gods "cross over" to Tian Xia and why.

I'm also wondering what the status of the the no human races are in Tian Xia. Elves? Do halflings live alongside Tians? Gnomes? Did Dwarves and Orc burst out in Tian Xia after the Quest for the Sky?

And did they bring their deities?

I could see Gorum being popular among the Tian-La.

The Inner Sea World guide states that Tians favored religions are:
Abadar(no surprise here, probably favored by scribes and bureaucrats.
Calisria(intersting...)
Desna(Makes sense)
Erastil(Strong sense of family probably goes over well in Tian Xia)
Irori(Duh)
Shelyn
Zon-Kuthon(Say what!)
and ancestrial worship and the gods of the Tian pantheon.

It's worth noting that all those gods are quite old. None of the "new" gods (Norgorber, Iomedae, Cayden) are mentioned. Thus, I would assume that this is a simple case of diffusion. I think I recall reading that Irori worship was brought over by missionaries from Vudra.

Actually, now that I think about it, Desna, Erastil, Zon-Kuthon/Dou Bral, Shelyn, and Abadar are incredibly old gods. I'd say they predate the world of Golarion itself. Thus, a Tien would be just as inclined to worship them as an Inner-Sea dweller. These gods might be known by different names, and would probably be portrayed as being ethnically Tien, but they would still be the same gods.

Sort of like how the Mwangi portray Iomedae as a proud black warrior woman.

Note that those are the favored deities of Tiens in the Inner Sea region. That's NOT the same list of the Inner Sea core 20 deities who are worshiped extensively in Tian Xia, although there's a fair amount of cross-over. And while they're worshiped with different appearances and with different appellations and nicknames... the actual NAMES of the deities won't be changing—when you can just cast commune to find out a deity's name, there's not a lot of logical reason for them to have new names in other regions. (There's a LOT of other reasons why we don't want to change deity names, of course.)

We'll be revealing the gods of Tian Xia later this year. Some of them will be familiar, and some will be brand new. To us. Not to Tian Xia.

Perhaps... but Norgorber is also one of the Inner Sea region's newest deities. That, plus the fact that he ascended in Absalom and not in Tian Xia makes it doubly unlikely he has a big role in Tian Xia.

Whether or not there's a big ninja god in Tian Xia, I'm not ready to say yet. If there is, though, it won't be Norgorber.

Torag? Heavens no. James is probably putting off covering the Dwarven god for as long as humanly possible. Hell, I wouldn't even be surpirsed if he "accidentally" left Torag out of the series just to avoid it even longer.

We'll probably be lucky if we see him in AP issue #59.

In completely unrelated news... Torag is indeed the god I had the LEAST to do with creating.

Liberty's Edge

I have no problem with that, I love Shelyn WAY more than Torag. I just figured the Linorm Kings was the best place to do it.

I also think it makes the most sense that Iori will be in #53, but we will see.

That would leave Norgorber and Torag left for the AP after this one. Does that give us hint of what's coming next? Probably not.

I have no idea where I dropped said hints. Might have actually been in the chat room. There's at least one hint about it in the Inner Sea World Guide too.

I'm sure someone'll find it and link it.

James has been talking about doing an ap based around the ppolymorph plague since Rise of the Runelords, so it might be that.

There's only one bestiary chapter in this product, but exactly how many monsters are going to be in that chapter isn't set in stone yet. Five is the average, though.

No AP for August = no AP for GenCon = major loss of sales for Paizo. Somehow (read: long nights and 7 day workweeks) will make sure there's an AP volume (or two) ready in time for GenCon.

The retail release date for our August products is the first day of Gen Con—that's August 4. Which means that, in order to get them to most subscribers before the release date, our August releases must actually ship at the end of July, while the July shipment is intended to go out at the very beginning of the month.

So, assuming our plans hold:

AP #48 subscriptions ship first week of July with a July 13 street date
AP #49 subscriptions ship last week of July with an August 4 street date
AP #50 subscriptions ship early September with a mid-September street date

Sure, because low-level players would be very happy if a Chelish/Qadiran/Keleshite slave galley would jump them :)

That sounds like an excellent combat. Truly trying and tough, win and get a vessel. No, Ulfen longboats, oh yeaahhhh.

They do have port cities... mostly on the east coast, since the west coast is mostly the Wall of Heaven mountains. There's one MAJOR port on the west coast—the free city of Goka.

Minkai, though, where this adventure is heading, is on the northeast coast. It's actually faster to take the overland route from Sandpoint to Minkai than it is to sail a ship. And actually safer, due to the fact that sailing east around the southern end of Tian Xia puts you into the most dangerous waters on the planet (those waters being the same reason Sarusan is so remote and unknown). And sailing west kinda makes you sail around TWO continents, after which you get to cross the world's largest ocean.

That's why there's a strong trade route between Avistan and Minkai that goes over the crown of the world.

(Also: We wanted an AP where the main transport is via a Varisian caravan, not a ship.)

Thanks for the info Jacobs. It sounds like you are making the wider Golarion map very interesting. A good change from the middle east, Indian, Chinese culture/Japanese culture lay-out. More mountains, more oceans and suddenly it won't look anything like earth anymore.

As my players near going off the bottom of the map (they have travelled across land from Sargava, through a Dragon Kingdom of protected and drugged Mwangi, a paradise of sorts, through a ruined city-state consumed by aberattions and into a planar link into a part of Leng, out to the Mana wastes to Geb) I am having to add more. Some scraps of the wider map would give something more to work with.

South of Geb I am adding naga and snake-worshipping cities. Forgotten realms did a bit of this and then you get to Al-Qadim I believe...

Tian Xia has a whole country crawling with nagas. I'm really looking forward to see what the lads do with it. I just finished proofing a chapter of Dave Gross's upcoming Master of Devils novel featuring a martial arts team from that region, so the bar he sets is pretty high.

I've had the pleasure of dming a team of an offensive-oriented monk/drunken master, a vow of poverty falchion wielding smelly ninja and a Hermean grappler warrior (for the sweet bab, but great weaknesses). Martial arts teams are really scary.

I'm especially eager to see what Naga-land is like, and if it's anything like the real world Southeast Asia, which is the origin of the mythical Naga in the first place.

And hmm, they have legends of Naga-descended royal families too... could we dare hope for a sorcerous Naga bloodine in this AP? I loved the Pestilence one in Council of Thieves.

Damn it Erik, why do you always have to post things that make me want the books faster. On a side note I took my 7 month old for his first trip to the Source last night.

Does anyone remember the Oriental Adventures module "The Flowers of Flame" from Dungeon #8? Reading the description gave me a flashback to that adventure; part of it revolved around hiring the right guide to bring you safely through mountains and snow to your destination (a Tibet-analogue). I never played it, but I thought it was a neat idea.

Err, what?

Or was this a flavor vow of poverty and not an Exalted Deeds Vow of Poverty?

Sounds like when my vow of poverty player tried to tell me he that a construct using natural weapons on him would be sundered because they were, well, manufactured weapons, it being a construct and all.

Exalted deeds vow of poverty, on the 3.5 ninja, who has no magic items, one old rusty and dented falchion and a broken "shiv" falchion. Constructs make him sad. A Tian in Sargava, at one stage his clothes got so coated with monster gore, being torn up and the wear from long marching, they fell apart. He smells because of his vow of poverty and he has a very low cha. He did once natural 20 a diplomacy with pirates!

Theneofish, I too was initially cynical. Maybe I won't like the end product, other "Asian" products done before have been a bit lame for anyone who has done Asian studies. Time will tell.

The royal naga was in one of the adventure paths already released. Page 88-89, Council of Thieves book 3, What Lies in Dust.
