Ninja versus Vikings!

Chapter 2: "Night of Frozen Shadows"
by Greg A. Vaughan

A faceless menace stalks the viking empire. For decades a sinister band of assassins has watched and waited, hiding among the rugged people of Kalsgard, capital of the fierce Lands of the Linnorm Kings. In all this time their mysterious prey has lain hidden away, but no longer. With their quarry revealed, death stalks the streets of a city of hardy warriors and viking raiders. Having traveled from distant lands to this notorious city, the heroes prepare to take their first steps on an expedition into some of the world’s most ferocious wilderness. Yet nothing is ever easy in dangerous Kalsgard, and soon they find themselves targeted by mysterious assassins. Can the heroes defend themselves and their friends from the blades of supernatural killers? Or will they meet their ends amid the ice and snow?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path includes:

  • “Night of Frozen Shadows,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 4th-level characters, by Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A trek through the crowded and deadly streets of Kalsgard, frigid capital of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, by Matthew Goodall.
  • Insights into the ways and worship of the goddess Shelyn, deity of beauty, love, and music, by Sean K Reynolds.
  • Murder and mystery in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Dave Gross.
  • Four new monsters, by Jesse Benner and Sean K Reynolds.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Good second part!

4/5

Read my full review here.

In Night of Frozen Shadows, the PCs travel to the city of Kalsgard in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings to find the legendary sword, Suishen, and then to find a guide across the Crown of the World to the far-off land of Minkai. The adventure is mostly event-based with a lot of role-playing opportunities, and ends with a dungeon crawl. It contains an interesting system for tracking the PCs’ “notoriety”, and from that, determining how and when their opponents react. It makes an excellent continuation of the adventure path, and only really suffers from having no explanation for the inaction of the party’s NPC allies.

Like all Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes, Night of Frozen Shadows also contains several support articles, including a gazetteer of Kalsgard, the most prominent city in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and the setting of the adventure. There is also the latest article on the deities of Golarion, this one focusing on Shelyn. I have always looked forward to these articles (there is one every three volumes, in the second and fifth instalment of each adventure path), as they give a detailed insight into the religions of the world and are always highly entertaining and informative to read. This one does not disappoint, as Shelyn is one of the more intriguing deities in the Golarion pantheon. Finally, there are the latest instalments of the “Pathfinder Journal” (I’ll wait until all six instalments are available before reviewing this story) and the “Bestiary”, containing several new viking-inspired and oriental monsters.

Overall, Night of Frozen Shadows is a worthy continuation of the Jade Regent adventure path. It is sure to provide players and Game Masters alike with many hours of fun and excitement.

Good; just don't point out on the boards that a caravan isn't necessary...

4/5

If you pay attention to the details of the adventure, and ignore the posters who insist that there is 'only one true way to run this module!' this module is actually quite good, with a lot of built-in flexibility which allows for customisation by GMs.
It's sufficiently open-ended, in fact, that even if you're not running the Jade Regent path, you could probably use this module as a stand-alone adventure around any or all of 'hunt the magic item'/'rescue the prisoner'/'destroy the evil guild' themes it offers, and it comes with a brief overview of the city where some of the action is scheduled to take place.

There are also an examination of the goddess Shelyn and her faithful plus the usual Pathfinder fiction and a short bestiary...

[Suishen] will be able to gain new powers depending on the PCs' actions throughout the AP.

Like Briar in KM, but even more PC-action centered and accessible way earlier!

So was I when I asked.:) My guess is they start shipping the Tuesday after Labor Day though.

Something about the new monsters for this book: according to what I've read, Golarion selkies are evil? Wow, that is a change from their mythic origins.

I am so looking forward to this book!

The Americans have an awful lot of work-free-days for a country where everybody goes sheer bloody panic the moment the word "socialism" is used. ;-)

Can you think of a better way to celebrate labor than by taking a day off and doing nothing?

...

Yeah I probably can too.

That would be a negative. At least for some European nations.

I don't know about the number of holidays in comparison to other countries, but some studies have come out stating that Americans on the average vacation less than most other countries in the world and tend to work more unreported overtime in a typical workday (though that does not make them any more productive in any way - they only think they are); especially in the last few years. The studies state that this is mainly due to Americans fearing the perception that they will be perceived as a lazy employee for taking time off, even if it is time they have rightfully earned. The studies also state that they are less productive because they don't take enough time off to relax and reinvigorate themselves. The main study I am referencing I saw reported on CNN a couple of months ago, but I cannot recall who conducted the study.

I got my "will be shipped" email last Thursday, but have not yet received my actual "shipped" email that will let me download the PDF yet. The only items in my shipment this month is the AP issue and the new adventure module; for once, I don't have anything else in the shipment - just the two books.

I know it is a bit of a process though and, hopefully, I will see the PDFs by tonight, but if not I am hoping for no later than tomorrow. It isn't the end of the world though if I don't get it until the end of the week.

No promises about the world not ending after the weekend though. ;)

Well that gives me a frame of reference then. Yours should go out before mine as I have the kingmaker dice added on mine. Which means I will like get mine the day after you at soonest and if you still don't have your's it makes me very sad. Now I will have to take it out on my gimp in the basement. :(

Attempting to wait patiently as well.......I cannot wait to read this issue!!

Hrm... I hate the waiting game. So do I understand you guys correctly and orders with a sidecart take longer to process?

Not necessarily. I have only the AP module, and I have not gotten my shipped notice yet. Lisa and Vic and others have explained in one of the bazillion monthly threads that always pop-up when stuff is being shipped that side carts do not necessarily mean stuff waits.
