HI Paizo folks,

Just a question, the product description says "The Flip side features rolling grassland and a mysterious clump of rocks". But you can't really see it on the product picture.

Sorry to say, but it sounds to me like "the flip side is empty but colored green". Could you say a bit more about this?

Is this really just featureless grass with one square of stone? Or is there more to the flip side than that?

Hey Bocklin:

I take it you have never bought a flip mat before. :) No worries. All flip mats come with one side that is printed with a cool map-type piece of art. This is the side that the harried DM who needs a tavern, or town square, or forest path, or pre-made dungeon uses. The other side of all of these flip mats is a textured blank side that the DM can use like a battlemat. The only difference between the flip mat and the battlemat (besides the fact that you can use any type of marker and not have it stick forever) is that the flipmat has the textured back. In my experience, I use the flip side when I have an encounter that takes place in that type of terrain and I draw it out by hand like I normally would on my battlemat.

Hi Lisa,

I never bought such a product, indeed. It's much clearer now!

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.

There is a cluster of stones in one of the corners of the flip side, and some spots throughout the area that suggest the grassland is, at least in some places, a paved area that's almost completely overgrown. You can see these features if you click the product's picture and look at the large photo.

Hi - do you know of any retailers in Great Britain who sell this product?

Yeah, these flip mats are way too awesome to even describe. Now I've shelled out lots of money for the Official D&D maps from Wizards, but you can't write on them like these. You have one set design, then on blank page that looks textured. Honestly, it's good one or two times, but after that it just becomes the same boring cave/temple/whatever.
With these I use the back sides over and over again with markers so I can make each encounter unique.
Also as a suggestion, Game Mastery should bring out Stamps for trees, bushes, etc. I seen some guy many years ago who made them by hand, but they've since worn out from over-usage and he doesn't make them anymore.

You can get them in the UK from Leisure Games:

http://www.leisuregames.com/

You can order directly from Leisure Games or maybe get your flgs to order for you. They are listing the flip mats at £5.99 plus postage.

Mattaus:

I know that our main UK distributor, Esdevium, is now carrying this line and will be sent an order soon. Of course, it takes a bit to get to the UK, so it might not show up there for a number of weeks. But your local retailer should check with Esdevium to get an order in.

Any plans to make 1" hex-grid flip maps? If so, I know quite a few people here who would love them. Squares are just so....square.

The basic Flip-Mat has squares on one side, and hexes on the back.

Something like this was being advertised in Dungeon a few years ago. Don't remember the name of the company though.

Someone else may have a more definitive answer to this one, but any store that is stocked by Esdevium should be able to order the Flip-Mats for you.

As a previous poster queried. I think these would be much better packaged in a tube or rolled-up rather than folded. I have one flip map it is quite stained (at the folds) after only one game session. I am fortunate in that I have an actual map storage case (bought from a bankrupt surveying company) but rolled would be a MUCH better way to receive this product.

Hi Scott:

We actually looked into rolled, but it cost quite a bit more to get a tube and then there was the added problem of shipping them. You can put the current ones in flat packaging when they ship out, but tubes cause all kinds of problems for shipping. Also, you need to have more space to store them, because tubes are less efficient, with all that air in the middle. Finally, the retail stores hate products in tubes because there is no easy way or space for them to shelve them.

I agree that rolled would be nicer, but the added costs on our end would mean adding $5 or more to the price and that would kill sales. So we went with keeping it cheap and dealing with the fold lines.

Also, it appears that Amazon.co.uk as well as Patriot Games (cool name) and Spirit Games carries GameMastery stuff.

I believe you both are thinking of 'Dungeon Stamps' made by Green Dragon Studio. Yes, its OOP. No, GDS is no longer around- even a defunct eBay Store. Here though, is the gist:

"With Dungeon Stamps, no longer will you have to worry about weak mapping skills or clumsy software interfaces. Stamp out detailed map symbols like doors, walls, and corpses right onto your vinyl game mat.
- No more piles of printed map sheets.
- Do away with confusing, hand drawn symbols.
- Add quality, visual, terrain to your game that doesn't get in the away of your miniatures.
- Best of all, Dungeon Stamp Ink easily wipes off your game mat, clearing the field for the next battle."

There might be 'Noble' website that 'Knight' still carry these.

Greetings! I have a question about this item for those who have used it already. Is the green side light enough in color so that dry-erase markings on it can be easily seen from across a gaming table? I ask because I purchased the flip-map with the ship on one side, but found that the color of the reverse side was too dark blue for markings to be discerned.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

You can probably get a sense of it by noticing how well you can see the black grid lines in the product image. I'd say if you're using thick black markers, you're probably fine (unless your table is huge or your players' vision is not so hot).

No, we don't have plans to print this product again. However, we have decided to do a different tavern to take its place. You might want to check out Flip Mat Waterfront Tavern which is coming out in May.

I am so glad to hear that you guys will be printing another tavern! The original has been the Rusty Dragon in our RotRL game for so long that I was worried about using it for CoCT. Now the PC's will have a second home. For me to invade with Grey Maidens and the like...

Ryn, who can never get enough maps.

As I said in the thread above, this actual tavern will never be reprinted, however there is a Flipmat Waterfront Tavern coming out in May of next year.

I have used the reverse side of the Tavern and found that the darker colored dry erase markers are fairly easy to see. Obviously the yellow, and orange markers are somewhat hard to see. For my group using different colors for doors or crates or water helps with their grasp of what items are where.

Just my 2 cp.

Is this going to be reprinted? For me, personally, this is the most useful flip-mat.

I have both this Tavern flip-mat and the Waterfront Tavern flip-mat. The Waterfront Tavern is also used in the Pathfinder Scenario #29 The Devil We Know, Part 1: Shipyard Rats. Both flip-mats are planned to see much usage. I am sorry to hear that Lisa said the Tavern flip-mat will not be reprinted, but perhaps a similar one will see the light of day.

I have nearly all of the flip maps and they are one of my favorite accessories. I really want to get my hands on the original tavern. Is there any chance that OOP flip maps could be made available as a pdf? Or perhaps all of the flip maps could have the pdf option. Even though it's more expensive than the original, the pdf could be printed by Kinkos and laminated for repeat use. This could satisfy those of us who want the OOP maps and also those who would prefer their maps to roll rather than fold.

Yes, it should... and now it does! Thanks!

I really would like to buy one of these flip mats. Paizo, please reprint this one. Or make an Inn that has cobblestone streets around it to represent one in a city.

Thanks,

Dan

Why we don't reprint.

It does seem like it's time to put another tavern on the schedule, though....

One thing to consider is having the back of the map be in that green grid as there are no maps currently available in just the plain green with grid markers. Although I really like this map i will be looking forward to what new designs come out in the months to come!! Thanks for hearing me out...

Actually, any of the Flips Mats have a back printed "blank" or "Green field" to play in. I have a couple of them and any are useful for those open field encounters. I use paper and balsa model buildings in my urban encounters and the back of the city related Flip Mats have a 1" squared surface suitable for my models or drawing any combination of things.

These maps are very useful. I do forsee a problem with the original Tavern map becoming too familiar, and over used. I am certain this is why it is out of print. I urge Paizo to come out with another Tavern Flip Mat. Yes, I know about the Waterfront Tavern, and am planning to acquire it; but for settings without a river, lake or sea coast it does not fit like the original. Let's face it - what adventure starts without a tavern?

Just based upon the interest on this thread, there is obviously a market!

WOW! OK I am not a complete idiot. I just followed the link to GameMastery Tavern: Why no reprint, and I have to admit I had the right idea in mind, but I had no clue that thread existed. Excellent bit of honesty on that thread, btw. Kudos Paizo!

Which maps have the green grid on the back? I would really like to have one!!

Shadow Lodge

I have most of the flips and I do not know of one that has a plain "green grass" side. I see some green with permanent trees but no plain green grass flip mat.

I would also really like a plain green side on a future flip mat. Blank green is better than forested as I can put the trees anywhere I need.

Please, please, please make a plain green grass flip mat.

P.S. Thank you Paizo for making flip mats, best game aid ever.

I'm interested in buying one of these if anyone has one they are willing to sell or trade. I'll be generous since it is OOP.
