Didn't use the society errand run framing, the puzzle chapter, or the ambush.

The best chapter was the orphanage. One team focused on keeping Auntie busy while the other snooped around and interviewed the kids. They just barely didn't succeed. Keep in mind that in official canon the questgiver is currently dead.

They chose the guaril encounter next. They got the "use this warehouse of scraps to solve the problem" bit but in my opinion took more risks than necessary. Rolling well bailed them out. Took the least amount of time of the three.

Keep in mind that we have a lawful good champion in the party and meeting Guaril was already pushing it. They went to the townhouse, I hammed up Zarta a little too much, made the imp a little too sympathetic, and the party noped out. Zarta's very fun though.

It turned out to be a really good narrative curve, giving the party the feel of low-level quest board adventuring until their characters were tired of it. There were jokes of the quest board being like craigslist ads. Also a great way to get the party to know some locals and future quest givers. There's little combat if you purposefully take out the combat like I did, so maybe add a sewer crawl or something to add variety.

Picked for scraps for a 2e home game.
First Steps, Part I: In Service to Lore is the beginning of a trilogy of “Pathfinder Society Introductory Scenarios” meant for new players. Although Parts II & III have been officially retired, Part I is still sanctioned for play. The goal of these scenarios is to introduce new players to the concept of the Pathfinder Society, its tenets, and, especially, its factions. The idea is that, after playing all three scenarios and meeting all the faction heads in-game, a player could then choose a faction for their character. Because these scenarios were released in 2011, and there’s been a •lot• of evolution of PFS factions since then, some of the material in the trilogy is outdated. Still, I really like the premise of slowly introducing players to PFS and getting them familiar with the factions in an organic way. As for In Service to Lore in particular, I thought it did a solid job of introducing a few faction leaders (in a broad brushstrokes sort of way) and has a good mix of role-playing, combat, and even some puzzle-solving. But although it’s introductory, that doesn’t mean it’s easy—with one encounter in particular holding the possibility of a swift end for a PC if a dice roll goes awry. I roll this for a group that consisted of one brand-new player to Pathfinder and four experienced players.

I suppose that’s my biggest complaint as well: it’s a part 1 that won’t get a legal follow up. Only a portion of the various factions will get addressed and new players will only get a glimpse of a select few of the factions.

I mentioned the words ‘new players’ deliberately. It’s for those players that this scenario is great. You get a plethora of different challenges that you have to solve. It gives you a nice impression of what the various things you can encounter in Pathfinder Society. There’s some role-playing, creative thinking, fights and challenges. In short it’s everything you need for an introduction.

For more experienced players it still is enjoyable, but not remarkable. It’s basically a bunch of ‘fetch this for me’ quests and lacks story (not to mention a solid conclusion). It’s similar to the Silverhex Chronicles or Phantom Phenomena, but without an overarching storyline that brings it all together. A special mention should be the final encounter though. That one can still be quite challenging. It’s a shame it’s a five-foot corridor, though that can also be a blessing I suppose.

In short it’s a challenging introduction for new players and the last fight can be brutal. More experienced players will still enjoy this, but will likely want more of a story. The fact that it’s the only part in a series that’s still PFS-legal, also slightly lowers my overall rating. I’m a little OCD when it comes to such things. I honestly felt like I needed a better conclusion and storyline. I still had fun though, and I can see this being great for new players. For more experienced I'd look for something different.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

I played this scenario yesterday, knowing all too well that parts 2 and 3 wouldn’t be PFS legal.
This is a solid scenario that is both a good intro to PFS and a reasonable overview of Absalom. The main issue I have with it is that parts II and III are no longer sanctioned for play. We played them anyway for no credit - just to get the flavor. The factions presented there were retired even earlier than the ones in part I, so I understand the choice from the PFS staff. Especially since, at the end, you need select one of the (mostly) retired factions!

A real highlight in this scenario was the encounter in the boarding house (for the Silver Crusade - one of the few "surviving" factions). It's got a great amount of investigation, and leads to ever more troubling information. You can really ham it up, too. Love that kind of roleplaying. Quintessential PFS, and lovely to still play something that has Guaril, the Sczarni leader, in it. Nice to see him again.

If you're playing this for a first time character, I highly recommend doing this as the first chronicle they ever get, followed by Wounded Wisp, then the Confirmation. It works beautifully as a trilogy, and even better when played in that order.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

Great that this is free, even if it isn't quite so relevant in season 6.

Despite having to do some seemingly 'minor' tasks, these tasks will introduce new players into some aspects of the Pathfinder world and challenge the players into some quick thinking and creative solutions (unless they want to go in swords swinging and guns blazing).

The few things that stop me from giving this a solid 5/5 rating is the fact that a few of the skill checks required are just a little tad too high for a level 1 only game. Also, the last boss fight can be unforgiving should players get very unlucky dice rolls and that they could have a better place/area to battle it out instead of being crapped into a squeezy place like that.

Overall, I'll still be willing to run this many as times as needed since me and many others I've played with or GMed for enjoyed it.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

Up to today, I still believe this is a fairly decent scenario to introduce newbies into PFS. It has a variety of tasks that must be completed that are not solely dependent on hacking and slashing villains. The challenges are also able to be completed using a variety of approaches, not just one spell or skill check. This allows players to be successful with several different approaches.
However, it is not too challenging. To date I have ran this module three times, and only once did it place the party in peril. I can see how this would be a good thing for beginning players who are new to a strange system, because you don't want to TPK them right off the boat.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

This is module that helps new members to the Pathfinder Society understand the factions that are available for play.
Entertainment: Decently entertaining, if you have a group into the experience. A disinterested group will probably see little more than "fetch quests". (3/5)
Role-play: The amount really depends on the personalities and experience of the players that make up the group. The group I ran through it didn't do too much, despite my trying to "play up" the personalities, but I can see lots of opportunities for role-playing. (4/5)
Encounters: The challenges are varied, but require a bit of thinking on players' parts. The scenario provides some work arounds for stumped players (i.e. skills checks). (4/5)

Overall: The scenario is an interesting and helpful way to introduce new players to PFS, but it does help if GMs are familiar with Absalom to provide good flavor and role-playing for each of the districts the players visit. (4/5)

I was prepared for a little railroading, but although some other scenarios I have played since grease you along subtly, it was particularly obvious in this one. That was a sour taste for me as someone who came from a long form campaign background. The puzzle in particular felt particularly contrived, and I was glad that my character didn't have the spellcraft to realize how much magical resource was put into a very unnecessary test.

That said, the pace of the adventure was good, and I'm sure people without a long roleplaying history would not mind most of the things that put me off. It does do a good job of showing you if you will hate any of the featured faction leaders.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

This was my personal introduction to PFS and it's modular play style. A word of caution to DMs though, the last fight may be a bit much against the minimum group size (four) if the dice aren't going their way. Just a head's up.

To give background, I have lead this scenario about 4 times, and watched it lead about 3 times. I'm intimately familiar with its pacing and logic, and I always cringe at the same times. This is by no means a bad scenario, but it isn't really a good one either. The only reason I lead it is because it's the only scenario for PFS that bothers to try to "introduce" the world of Pathfinder Society to the players. Thus, I find myself constantly leading the same suboptimal scenario over and over again.

The story takes players through some routine encounters they will face in dig-sites and shady back alleys all across Golarion. I highly recommend GM's check out the Campaign Setting Book and other splat-books for information about Absalom to share with the players, especially the new ones. 1) Easy and straight forward player hook that makes sense.

3) Great puzzles. Actually had my players puzzled for a bit. Which is abnormal since most puzzles are incredibly easy in scenarios.

Con:
1) Encounter #5 had great reasoning from a GM perspective, but ultimately satisfying 1/8 of the potential players curiosity seems kind of weak IMO. It could have used more build up. Like making it a well known Pathfinder foil instead of Random Encounter.

2) •••••SPOILER••••• Encounter #5 was extremely brutal. The cramped quarters definitely played into the "random encounters" favor. Wizard wins initiative, moves up, color spray, 3/4 of my players are out for the count due to bad rolls. May not happen every time, but enough to have my players robbed blind and fail one of their missions. Still they "Succeeded" but learned in a very brutal way that failing initiative can be a game ender.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

Pros:

This is the module for not only introducing combat and roleplaying PFS style to the PC's but if you have a party that takes things to a whole different level (like Rogues that go through an old lady's front window instead of just using diplomacy) you have room in the module to go with it, have a good time and still get your XP.

My only gripe is a GM gripe: A lot of other modules give the NPC's answers to the commonly asked questions and I wish that it had been the same way for this module as well. Just so I have a better idea as to how to answer my PC's questions.

But if you want players to get into PFS—Run this module and you'll have everyone hooked for the rest of the season.
Lady Ophelia2011-09-09T09:24:40ZPathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF: Great intro to PFS (4 stars)KigerWulfhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy8jor?Pathfinder-Society-Scenario-Intro-1-First-Steps-Part-I-In-Service-to-Lore2011-09-06T23:30:14Z
Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

•Possible Spoilers Ahead•

I played through this as a break from a normal home game with friends who had no Pathfinder Society experience.

They liked everything about the adventure, until we got to the final encounter. The logistics of fighting in such a confined space weren't easy, and our wizard ended up dying.

When you have 6 PC's, you hate to see someone die in their first ever PFS scenario. I'm not sure, though, if that encounter is really that difficult or if they just were really unlucky (Color Spray rendered the fighter useless for most of the combat).

One of the highlights of the scenario was in the warehouse, all but one of the characters fell into the water, and most had a LOT of trouble getting back out, causing laughs galore around the table as they struggled mightily to get themselves dry.

All in all, I loved it (and so did five of the six players). This was the best of the Intro series, IMO.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

•Possible Spoilers Ahead•

It introduces players to what it is like to be a pathfinder and with some decent GM knowledge of factions and roleplaying, can really introduce them to a couple of the factions and their leaders.

Everything is really nicely done in the module. I actually ran this through googlehangouts, which worked really well, to get some more players into PFS and they seemed to enjoy playing it.

[Spoiler omitted]

At least it showed them that life as a pathfinder is in no way easy! It's a dangerous world out there...

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

This is overall a good intro module.
Adam Daigle has presented us with a light, fun and varied scenario perfect for players who are new to Pathfinder in general or PFS Organized Play in specific.

A mix of roleplaying, puzzle-solving, and combat, In Service to Lore creates a varied play experience that will keep your PCs engaged throughout. From out-of-the-box problem solving and investigation encounters to low comedy, this one has it all.

It also does a fantastic job introducing characters to the various faction heads, allowing new PCs to meet these individuals before they start working for them. As regular PFS scenarios rarely allow for this sort of face-to-face interaction, this is a phenomenal addition to this scenario and is much appreciated as a PFS GM.

Although more dedicated PFS players may find this one a bit of a breeze, it accomplishes everything a starting scenario should for a new group. Highly recommended.

Pathfinder Society Scenario Intro 1: First Steps—Part I: In Service to Lore (PFRPG) PDF

This review will provide only minor spoilers and is based on actual play experience.
