A wintry wilderness and dungeon adventure for 17th-level characters.

Entombed in the Ice

The witch queens of Irrisen must abdicate their thrones every 100 years when their mother, Baba Yaga, places a new daughter on the throne. But one queen was unwilling to relinquish her rule, and led a doomed rebellion against the Mother of Witches. Afterward, Baba Yaga entombed her wayward daughter in an icy necropolis known as the Veil of Frozen Tears, along with a powerful artifact called the Torc of Kostchtchie, hiding them both far from mortal eyes.

Now, almost 500 years later, the tomb has been found, and the race is on to plunder its treasures. Will the PCs follow Elvanna, the current queen of Irrisen, in her attempt to recover the Torc, or will they join forces with the demon lord Kostchtchie? What secrets does the Veil of Frozen Tears conceal? Can the PCs reclaim the lost artifact and keep it from those who also seek its power, or will they fall victim to the denizens of the tomb and end up as eternal guardians themselves?

The Witchwar Legacy is an adventure for 17th-level characters, written for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and compatible with the 3.5 edition of the world's oldest RPG. The adventure features an icy necropolis frozen in time, cursed dragons, twisted giants, and the fell magics and devious riddles of the Queen of Witches herself! It also includes a description of the frost giant fortress of Holvirgang, and a new monster, the extraplanar scions of the titans called the Abyss gigas. This adventure is set in the northern reaches of the wintry land of Irrisen in the Pathfinder campaign setting, but can be easily adapted for any game world.

The Witchwar Legacy is a delightfully twisted high level module that really showcases what a powerful witch can do! Check out my full review: The Witchwar Legacy

get ready to cast wish in an adventure....

5/5

This review is going to be one big spoiler, so if you're planning to play it, don't read on.

Still here? I haven't gotten to playtest this adventure yet but if my group survives, I will. So how easily is it usable by a 17th-level party?

First, the quest here is to retrieve a minor artifact. Very groovy for this level.

There are two evil factions after the artifact, Queen Elvanna and the demon lord Kostchtchie. The PCs could work for either one or be in a race against both of them.

So this adventure would work for evil, neutral, or good PCs if they want to gain a minor artifact. If they want to destroy it at the end, that would be an even bigger adventure.

There are 21 numbered encounters here plus 1 that happens with ethereal movement and 1 at the end. Entering the location is only possible physically (no cold damage) or with planar travel (with cold damage inflicted). Other magical movement is blocked.

The map to the dungeon is complex and spread throughout the module, but I could follow it through. A DM will have some flipping to do unless he has copies of the maps compiled. Also, due to the size of the monsters in the module, the scale is one square is 10 feet which makes sense and makes the Veil much bigger than the maps seem to show.

Encounters include both traps and monsters. Depending on whom the PCs choose to negotiate and/or ally with they may have to fight everyone or may bypass some encounters or even add some allies. Many monsters are drawn from OGL sources and several have interesting twists including templates, curses, and class levels. I really liked the various monsters and how they all fit the theme of the adventure.

There is an option for how to add a wendigo to the adventure and what might happen if the PCs keep the artifact (or turn it in).

The adventure has a new artifact, a new monster, a new template, a settlement of frost giants, and four PCs (no wizard so no wish spell).

From my read through, this adventure is excellent for high level PCs. It covers how divinations and magical travel function and how various NPCs and factions will react. Woven throughout the adventure is the history of both Irrisen and Baba Yaga.

While Baba Yaga does not appear in the adventure directly, one dangling plot hook could lead the PCs to look for her after the adventure ends.

Another cover I just LOVE!

When I got the art in my inbox, I saw it didn't have one of the iconics in the scene, so wondered if it was actually for the fiction line. Maybe a repackaging of Andre Norton's work.

I'm intrigued how you'll go about creating a high-level adventure that takes into account all the possible PC abilities (especially now the APG material is being thrown into the mix!).

Well... I just got my notification email, so hopefully I'll have this in the next 2 weeks (not that that's a deal breaker mind you) it's just as much as I'd like to GM this for my high level group, I've more or less promised no more "side treks" or delaying tactics, and am actually trying to wrap up our high level Mwangi Expanse campaign. But, a suggestion from one of my players... I'm doing a "series" of daisy-chain adventures as they are questing to

Movie plot spoiler:
destroy Xotani's Heart

and after the little quest they are on now, heading up North will be their destination to begin the first part of their quest.
Movie plot spoiler:
I've also decided that, since I promised not to involve them in side-treks that have little or nothing to do with their overall goal, that I'm going to "borrow" that torc from the demon lord of frost giants, and place it in my little quest. It's basically something that someone wants in exchange for what the PCs need for their quest.

Heh heh... sorry for all the spoiler tags... it's taken me a while to "learn" how to use them... and now that I know how... I try not to "spoil" AP, or module plots for folks who might be randomly reading posts on the boards.

I am really looking forward to this module.

Darn you all! I don't really like high level play, but I'm really very tempted to get this... But then I do enjoy ready high level adventures sometimes even if I don't like playing them. :)

Cover and subject matter aside, I have never seen anything by Vaughan that is not absolutely awesome. I have every expectation that this will be equal to all of Vaughan's past exceptional work.

Just finished a quick skim through of this module and I love it. I really appreciate the high level love, and the fact that I can see this to be a very difficult module to get through without death (what else can you expect from Vaughn?). As for the art, I think the overall presentation of the entire module is A+. The maps were perfect, the art was awesome, and the layout was great.

I also have to point out that the art for Ilivorr Karanasi was absolutely amazing. This really is making me look forward to Bestiary II (Wendigo!) and Winter Witch.

Quick question -- and respond with spoiler tags if you wish --

Do we get actual stats for Baba Yaga in this module?? :-D

If I am not confusing names, I hope you have bought into his Tsar Rising adventure from Frog God Games that is coming out. The PDF's have proven it is going to be great/awesome too.

I am sick and on meds right now, so my mind could definitely have him confused with whatever other Paizo author wrote Tsar.

Indeed, this is the same Greg A. Vaughan who wrote the Slumbering Tsar, or perhaps his clone. Which would go a long way in explaining how he is able to write so many excellent modules so quickly.

As I understand it he wrote Slumbering Tsar many years ago and is just now having to rewrite it from pure 3E to Pathfinder rules. I would assume he is also doing some rewriting and add ons, he does have a number of years of thought and learning to add to it, but by and large it was written many years ago. Like about a year before 4E was announced.

So as prolific as he is able to be, this explains that he is not super prolific.

I too love Greg Vaughan's work... I actually just used an adventure he wrote for Dungeon in 05' or 06'. When it comes to premade adventures I will run pretty much everything he does... I Can't wait for this high level adventure! When I saw it was a level 17th I was like "I should probably get that." Then I saw who the author was and my wife was asking me "Why do you need the credit card again?"

Grats, Greg! Can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

Out of curiosity...

Is anyone else thinking the identity of Baba Yaga's rebellious daughter is who I think they're implying it is??

If we get the Stats for Baba Yaga it will probably be int he next module fore people of 20th level :)

As much as I'd like to see the Witch Queen statted out, that won't be happening for a looong time. Baba Yaga is clearly epic level (above 20th), and until Paizo covers those rules, Baba Yaga will continue to be an ominous mystery.

And alas, even after we do get epic rules Paizo-style, there's no telling when (or even if) they'll stat her up.

Interesting news... (well for me anyway) one of my players has indicated interest in playing through this module, citing some very good and convincing reasons...

1)Our group likely won't achieve 17th level for some time (again).

2)The group is already within Irrisen anyway...

So... it looks like I WILL have the opportunity to run my Monday night group through this one.

And from what I've seen with this module... oh MAN... this is gonna be SWEET!

Greg Vaughn... you write-up a great high-level adventure... I must say.

Oh My Gosh... until you said that, and I thought about the rebellious daughter's name (provided in the module)... WOW... yeah, yeah I think that's EXACTLY who it is.

Spoiler:
That daughter's name is Tashanna... and I remembered someone, on some other thread said that Iggwilv is also known as 'Tasha'... HOLY COW, that's just too cool!

@Mikaze... LOL "gnarly". :) Of course I know why you said that, but it's still funny.

By-the-way... "i'mokaywiththis.jpg" doesn't seem to "do" anything... i.e. it's not "clickable".

Oddly enough... I have a feeling what the jpg might be. :)

I've got to ask, who is that on the front cover? I'm assuming the giant is Kostchtchie what with him not looking like any of the giants described in the adventure. The woman, however, has got be a little stumped. I'm thinking it could be Tashanna or Elvanna. The only thing that doesn't fit is that Kostchtchie doesn't appear to have a beef with Elvanna or Tashanna (beyond the hatred of everything in existence that Kostchtchie always has). If anything the Witchwar Legacy backstory points to it being Baba Yaga more than anything else. And if that's Baba Yaga...well.....damn! Really, I was just curious if they were anything more than a badass witch and a badass giant. So does anyone know?

It helps that according to the adventure:

Spoiler:
"[Baba Yaga] did not seek to punish her fo her ambitions, however, and instead banished Tashanna forever from Golarion and its surrounding planes to other worlds where she could no longer attempt to interfere in the plots of Baba Yaga, yet where she had the opportunity to realize her own potential as a witch tyrant and binder of demons in her own right." (P22, Rm 19)

That sounds an awful lot like the beginnings of another well known witch of awesomeness we know about.

Hey Mr. Mr., :P

Anyway... that giant on the cover is (likely) an abyss gigas (new monster in the module).

As for the witch

Spoiler:
I think it's very likely to be Elvanna's granddaughter and one of the PCs principal foes towards the end... Ilivorr Karanasi... forgive me if I misspelled that... I'm going from memory.

But I'm particularly excited about this module... and I get to run my 17th level group through this beauty starting this Monday. :)

Dean

Dark Archive

I had the thought of an abyss gigas but their's a picture of one in the module. And while I figured that a thing spawned from a titan can probably look like all sorts of stuff and still have the same stats, that picture looks far too demonically awesome to be a simple abyss gigas (no matter how cool anything with a CR over 15 looks). As for the witch being Ilivorr, we have a picture of her to compare to. Of course it just be artist interpretation but I was kinda hoping for something more awesome.

On a side note, I now have the thought of Abyss Gigases with Ice Linnorm mounts. Kostchtchie has the most awesome cavalry ever.

You may want to think about using the spoiler tags in the product description area. Either that or start a new thread and add spoilers to the title.

1. Yeah, Mr. Bojangles. You probably ought to spoiler tag that quote you took from the adventure a few posts above. It's pretty revealing.

2. As for the cover, I assume it's a frost giant with the gnarled template and some non-iconic adventurer, but I don't really have any more insight into it than you guys do.

3. Are my eyes deceiving me or did we just have an honest-to-gosh sighting of the elusive Steve Greer? Last time I saw him was in grainy black and white lumbering thorugh a pine forest.

What would be 'awesomer' would be an all-Cabbage AP (like what almost happened with Runelords, 'cept for that [totally brilliant opening from] that Jacobs guy.)

Of course I jest, because I've been lovin' the McCreary, Nelson, Spicer treatment in the APs. Okay, I call for 12-parter just to fit 'em all in. ;)

It would be possible, but you'd really have to hurry. For most groups I'd think 2-3 sessions of 5-6 hours each, longer if you do a lot of RP and tactical discussion. I once ran Monte Cook's Labyrinth of Madness in a marathon weekend, so I know such things can be done, but it wouldn't be the norm probably.

Figure about 20 encounter areas give or take (depending on how directly the PCs make it to their goal) and how long it would take you and your group to do that at 17th level.
