Fortune's Fool is an innovative role-playing game that uses Tarot cards instead of dice. Set in a fantastic version of Renaissance Europe, you will play as men, elves, dwarves, goblins, and more as you adventure from the courts of Paris to the canals of Venice.

Using the new Fate Twist system, you can directly alter the course of battles, social interactions, and magic spells by manipulating the Tarot deck itself.

Fantastic System - Unique and Fun

5/5

Tried this at a convention last weekend and fell in love with it. The system is very well balanced, and the tarot mechanic isn't just a gimmick. It feels very different than using dice. Manipulating the deck becomes part of the party's strategy. It's subtle but rewarding, and despite getting my character's head blown off with a blunderbuss, I had a fantastic time. Look forward to playing more of this.

Great Concept, Wonderful Mechanic

5/5

I'm a fan of the Renaissance, somewhat new to role-playing, but found the Tarot card mechanic compelling. The use of the deck creates a mystical and historical tone for adventuring. Easy and fun to create a character. Inventive and enjoyable. Can't wait to see where this goes!

Fortune's Fool

I love the concept. Playing with Tarot cards is such a rich experience. I bought the book instead of the pdf and I'm very glad of it; the artwork is beautiful. I'm still exploring the game mechanics but so far it is well worth the time it takes to master the game.

I quite liked this game as well.

Here's an interview with the Fortune's Fool Fellows.

Good to hear it, Jade, 'cause the "three reviewers" seem like the same person, all using the same tone of voice, all with glowing generalities about the same features, all with the same five-star rating. And the two "reviewers" from July have never stepped foot onto these boards again.

(Apparently, the pdf doesn't have the same artwork as the printed book?)

Jade, what did you think about the setting?

Hi, Chris. I talk about the setting extensively in that interview, but I take your point and I'll weigh in.

I've noticed a rash of different product reviews of late from people who have no posts and just one review. Of course it could easily be that these one timers are just proponents of a game and they try and visit every RPG forum briefly to evangelize, but the practice doesn't come across as genuine and that's a true shame, because most of those games, and certainly Fortune's Fool, are very entertaining and don't need anything remotely resembling shady help.

Now if there are actually sock puppet reviews on different forum boards, and some must be just that, to any publisher, or more likely those ardent fans who wish to support their favorite games and don't know the best way, I'd caution that sock puppet reviews only ever hurt the product. Such attempts are easily spotted and make reviews mean less to more people, and that's a disservice to those who dig so deep (see Nate Collins, Megan Robertson, Endzeitgeist, Dark Mistress et al) to come up with thoughtful, fair critiques of RPG product. Those critics have developed and established a reputation of integrity and solid analysis, a valuable craft that deserves an audience.

Fortune's Fool was a lot of fun, it played well and it played differently enough from other games to be worth it. I totally stand by that and I'd be very curious to see what trusted reviewers think. Pantheon Press is a great bunch of guys and their Nobis setting was nominated for an ENnie this last year. Those guys know how to produce high quality, sexy RPG concepts.

I just looked up this review over at RPGnet. Clearly a well written, comprehensive and honest review one can trust as being genuine. I liked the game more than Tommy, but after reading his review there's no question as to why he likes what he likes or dislikes what he dislikes.

Anyone who wants to play FF at a gaming con let me know and I'll GM your pants off. That's what I do to all my first dates. Fortune's Fool at night... cut to: you making me breakfast while wearing nothing but my shirt.

Thanks Jade! Let us know if you do ever run FF!

Anyway, I'm one of the guys from Pantheon. The editor-in-chief to be exact. To be perfectly frank, Joel and Erica were two of our playtesters, two of our lead designer's old friends and they got pretty excited about the game. So, yes, those reviews aren't exactly unbiased.

But Zafrod was one of our players at Ubercon and I believe that he did genuinely like the game, despite being shot in the face! A double-barreled musket will ruin your day!

Also, the art in the PDF is exactly the same as the art in the color copy. I can see how Erica's comment could be confusing; I think she was just glad to have physical copies of that art.

By the way, if you want to see Fortune's Fool in action, we'll be running a bunch of games at Anonycon Dec. 3-5! It's in Connecticut, so if you are in the area, stop on by.

Thank you for that extra bit of information. Very much appreciated. I thought these were likely testimonials from true believers who just lightly sprinkled their praise around different RPG forums, but in our community suspicion is high over these sorts of driveby reviews and sock puppetry in general, and I didn't want even a hint of suspicion to raise any doubt about FF being the great game it is.

Aw crap... I just drew the Death card. What does that me--
