The hook is great (you're all castaways who washed up on an island). There's interesting NPCs to play with, with cool mechanics. There' a great gimmick for the book— it's a mixture of wilderness survival, mystery solving, with classic "jungle"-style encounters. The encounters are fun. The survival mechanics are fun but— crucially— you can dial them up or down depending on what your group finds interesting. There's a sense of mystery and exploration that pervades the entire book in a very appealing way.

A great thing about the adventure is how modular it is. It's extremely self-contained, and you can vault from this book into just about any adventure. That makes this book easy to recommend.

The modular nature can work against it in one way: I find that it doesn't feel like an important part of the Serpent's Skull adventure path in general. The GM has to do some work to think about how the book links to what comes later.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

I think this has a lot of the marks of a great adventure. I just finished running it and I loved the flavor of it. However, that said there are a few problems, some of the battles have combos that are nigh on impossible to escape unscathed. The darkness plus paralysis in the caves of the mother and the sheer numbers of the cannibals left my players party in shambles. I love how it sets up the rest of the campaign and the NPCs were very fun to play. My players even managed to keep two of them alive. So I'd say with a little tinkering to make some of the encounters less deadly, this is a great start to an AP.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

This was a pretty sweet module!
My players and I (the GM) loved this book. Having played through Kingmaker and experienced the sandbox style they presented there, I can safely say Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (SfSS) balances that sandbox exploration feel with what I think Kingmaker lacked - a good sense of progression. Certainly you can go around the island and kill off random encounters and animal lairs and explore shipwrecks, but you very quickly pick up on the hooks of a plot and an idea of how to progress it at the pace the players want. And trust me, they should pace themselves, because this AP is hard as hell.

The DCs are a bit too high here and there (Swim and Climb Checks of 20 at level 1? Knowledge DC 25s?? DC 30 Perception and Escape Artist checks???) but that's easily tweak-able. The Cannibal camp really ramps up the difficulty if they're not careful, and Mother Thrunefang was an almost TPK if you run her as it describes tactically. Also, 6 skeletons vs a level 1 party with minimal means of dealing bludgeoning damage is extremely deadly; proceed with caution. Endure Elements is a must have (luckily there's an NPC with the capability to cast it if the PCs can't), and I even threw in the rules about getting lost, which made for some desperate (and fun!) struggles in the island. All this, combined with the dangerous wildlife, gives a very visceral feel to the deadliness of the Shiv, and my players and I loved it.

The mystery as to how they got there and why is also a fun little game we had, and any GM worth his/her salt should take time to read up on each of the NPC castaways and play them according to their personalities. Gelik and Ishirou remain two of the more memorable NPCs they encountered, mostly because both of them gave them the most trouble. Jask was almost immediately helpful when the paladin convinced everyone that he was innocent, Aerys was also convinced to be more helpful especially after they got the berries, and Sasha got her animal companion but unfortunately contracted Red Ache early on and was mostly incapacitated for the adventure (I plan on detailing her further in the coming books).

The "Campmaker" rules were a little too gamey for my tastes, but it worked out after we assigned roles and started getting back into roleplaying. Trying to win over the favor of the NPCs was quite fun as well. Overall, a very fun AP, especially if they're looking for a challenge. I highly recommend it!

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

Spoiler potential ahead, so be warned.

I've never GM'd a module or AP before and this was easy and straight forward. Its packing with flavour and has the right balance between set structure and space for GM creativity to put in what your group likes.

As others have posted its got a great mix of encounters, story, resource management and the challenge of the environment. I think old school rpg'ers are going to love it like we did.

Some tips with this
• Check the forums with thread for this book as there are plenty of GM aids
• Openly explain to players that the characters are going to wake up on the beach and that the opening Fort save determines the order of waking up. Lets them know that its a story based thing and they haven't been cheated.
• Make the NPCs shipwrecked with the PCs more friendly and ready to help. To get your PCs to bond with them you'll want to make the NPCs relevant and useful by having them give minor bonuses to saves vs disease and the elements, giving the players safe food and water, and crafting ammunition. This ensures the PCs don't see the NPCs as additional hastle and gives the NPCs some value.
• Use equipment from the Core book as treasure for the shipwrecks
• Consider lowering some of the Climb, Swim and Jump DCs

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

My group loved this one and I think it is one that we'll be talking about years later. It's a massive sandbox for your players to explore while they attempt to escape. Think Mysterious Island meets Indiana Jones, with a little bit of Morrowind.

The island, Smuggler's Shiv, is filled with set-piece locales, monster lairs, and vile cannibals. Plus, there's a half-dozen fellow castaways to roleplay, each with their own... issues. Lots of wilderness survival and jungle encounters, but also several solid dungeons near the end of the Path, and some roleplay/story encounters thrown in. Also, if you want to ramp up the Survivor angle, there's disease, morale, and camp-building to deal with. Quite a lot of variety.

Really, there's a lot to do, and plenty of room for a GM to add more. The encounters are balanced; some are quite challenging, others are a lot of fun. The NPCs have a lot of flavor, plus some quests (and rewards!) of their own. The set adventure locales cover a wide spectrum, and they're all really interesting.

As a sandbox, though, the module has a lot for the GM to keep track of: the NPCs' morale and helpfulness, the camp, random encounters, weather, etc. If you're strapped for time, this is not the Path to get started on; if you like modifying and expanding pre-packaged modules, this Path has plenty of room for you to work with.

I found it a lot of fun to run, but also pretty labor-intensive for a canned adventure.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

The first module in the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path starts off with the players being shipwrecked and stranded on a jungle island. To start, I DO like the adventure and am quite happy with it (will be starting this Saturday). However, it is strongest in the "2nd" half - basically after they get past the "fluff" encounters. The complaint that I have is in the claim that this is easy for the GM. My disagreement with that is that a "sandbox" (which this is partially) is inherently more work for one. If I start AP#1 then I haaaave to buy #2 and so on and so forth until I find myself with an empty checking account and I'm forced to steal my cat's food after my wife has left me whilst taking the house with her and everything else I own.

(This is a simple cause and effect scenario that is based solely in reality.)

As I did NOT want that to happen to me I was hesitant in purchasing this particular AP. Well, I weighed my options and figured that a steady diet of cat food is better than nothing at all so I took my chances with this adventure.

I would gladly hoard cat food for this AP! This is an adventure that is a culmination of a lot of people's artistic talent and in-depth understanding of the Pathfinder game over at Paizo. Mr. Jacobs has crafted an awesome adventure. Even in a wilderness adventure, he caters to every style of player and is gracious enough to make this just as much fun for the GM to read and run.

As an acting-theatre major along with long-time improviser, this AP gives the GM a wonderful cast of NPCs to portray that supplies the PCs with an added challenge. While this specifically caters to my own taste as a GM who loves the story and roleplaying aspects, this AP really has something for everyone. It is a well-devised sandbox adventure that has plenty of colorful combat encounters along with an enticing plot that taunted my players from the moment we started until we ended. This AP is written in a way that is easy for ANY GM to shape and mold so that it fits his/her gaming group's style. This is the most of the fun I've had as a GM. I was given the ability to create my own mood and style for this piece that I know would excite my players.

Also, if you have trouble trying to find creative ways to gather adventurers together, Mr. Jacobs hands you that creative way. It is a fantastic opportunity to really create the mood and feel for the game while setting up the adventure.

I was thoroughly impressed with this AP and we are about to start the second one. I highly recommend this adventure. This is one of those pieces where you can tell the writers and artists have really found and established the Pathfinder feel. I have referenced "mood and feel" numerous times throughout this review, but after gaming for awhile, I find this to be the most important aspect to a good game since it will help your PCs determine how they should conduct themselves. This is a prime example of why our gaming group has dedicated itself to the work of those at Pathfinder RPG.

Now that that is all said and done, it is time for dinner with Mimi. I've decided to prepare liver and tuna tonight with some Frank's hot sauce to cut out the bitterness. Thank you, Paizo. I have never been happier.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

Adventure Paths always scared me because of the level of commitment that comes with them.

We just finished with this one, and I can't help but thank Paizo for making this SO EASY on the GM, especially since (depending on how your group progresses) they may have to juggle six NPCs that can become just as important as PCs!

Very cool, and I really recommend it.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #37: Souls for Smuggler's Shiv (Serpent's Skull 1 of 6) (PFRPG)

This was actually my introduction to Pathfinder RPG, and it got me hooked.
