When you know a thing, to realize that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it: this is knowledge.
—Kung Fu Tse

Sagacious master of esoteric knowledge and inscrutable methods, the enlightened scholar searches for both mundane and arcane secrets. In motivation, he ultimately seeks to understand the universe. The method differs from one enlightened scholar to another. One may wish to become truly enlightened to join with the universe while another may desire the secret to immortality for purely selfish reasons. Another may simply want to serve his people through applied knowledge. The enlightened scholar actively works to apply what he knows to the problems at hand.

The Enlightened Scholar is a new base class converted from Heroes of the Jade Oath; part monk, part alchemist, and part mage, this class is an evocative and unique creation now wholly compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

An awesome class in V.2.0.

4/5

Wanted to thank Vic for getting this up.

First off let me say what an excellent product, a few editing mishaps (Masterful Linguist - "He need make a linguistics check."???) and there doesn't appear to be a table for Folk Magic, but apart from this a solid prodution.

Thanks White Mage I am working on getting the table up ASAP.

This full-color pdf clocks in at 26 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page credits, 2 pages ads and 1 page OGL, leaving a whopping 21 pages of crunch and fluff for this class, and rest assured, the space has been put to good use.

What is the enlightened scholar? Well, remember "Kang the Mad" from Bioware’s Jade Empire? The Uncle in Jackie Chan movies? The Enlightened Scholar is all of this and even more. Mechanically, it's a D6, 6+Int, 1 good save class that has a monk-like improving unarmed attack that gets better as he progresses as well as a progressing bonus to AC.

The major abilities of the ES, however, are abilities selected from diverse fields of knowledge, so called “enlightened knowledge”-abilities he may select from several fields.

The fields are:
Academia (Knowledge + Languages), Feng Shui (alter the flow of of fate, exorcise with a broom), Folk Magic (makes the ES a minor preparing spellcaster), I Ching (Divination and prediction abilities), Invention (trapfinding and creating strange devices and the like), Medicine (gives helping healing abilities), Nei Tan (internal alchemy), Warfare (Help allies with strategy), Wei Tan (external alchemy).

Each of the fields has several different abilities to choose from and you may switch freely from field to field, however, some of the abilities with a given field have additional prerequisites (skills, feats and other enlightened knowledge abilities).

An Enlightened Scholar may also dispel enemy spells via Brandish Magical Might, gained at 4th level. The respective check is d20+ES class levels + his WIS-mod.
He can also use this check 0.5 x Class level to overcome SR.
This ability seems to be quite powerful to me, granting essentially unlimited, improved dispel magics (albeit only to counter spells), freeing resources of the other characters. If it only had limited uses, it wouldn't be so powerful.

The whole class takes up 15 pages and is advanced in every sense of the word: Interesting, complex and many options to consider. The ES is certainly not a class to pick-up-and-play, but rather a versatile and complex class that is definitely rewarding to play.

We also get 1 page with a new skill, the Feng Shui skill. Pathfinder purists might dislike the synergy bonus the skill grants to heal and survival, which is not really Pathfinder, imho.

After that, we get 4 pages of Ch'i- and Chakrafeats. I liked them. As written in the pdf, it's a bit hard and counter-intuitive how many Ch'i points a character has. My tip: Read the feat "Ch'i awakened" first, it answers the question. I still think that separately pointing towards this feat in the list would have helped to avoid the (possible) confusion.

Unfortunately, the pdf has some editing mistakes and leaves me with the impression of being a bit rushed. These are the errors/problems I found:

Page 3: Masterful Linguist […]"need"(lack an "s") make a linguistics check… Against what DC?

Page 23: "ch4'i" in Footsteps of the Dragon should read ch'i

The Feng Shui table on page 17:
DC 20:
Reduce the amount of rest needed per day by 2 hours. (The recovery of spell slots still requires 8 hours of rest.)
Reduce the amount of rest needed per day by 3 hours. (The recovery of spell slots still requires 8 hours of rest.)
Both are DC 20, so which one is correct? Or can he choose whether to shorten his rest by 2 or 3 hours?

Diet of Jade has Knowledge (Magic) as a prerequisite skill. Shouldn't that be Knowledge (arcane) is PF? What difference is there between Knowledge (Magic) and Knowledge (Arcane), if any? (P.7+13)

The prerequisite for Bone Setting is Knowledge (Anatomy). While I have played with this skill as complimentary to Heal for years, I don't think its standard for PCs to have it. A short description on this particular knowledge skill would have helped there.

As a final bit of constructive criticism, I think it would benefit the pdf to include a bracketed "See feat Ch'i Awakened" behind the Ch'i-related abilities of the ES as well as in the beginning of the explanation on what Ch'i and Chakra feats are.

Conclusion:
I have to say that this one is not easy for me. At all. I'm a latecomer patron to the "Heroes of the Jade Oath" patronage project and really like it. I really like the Enlightened Scholar and also the possibility that, sales being high enough, we might see a full conversion of the Arcana Evolved setting to PF.
HotJO would definitely deserve an even broader audience, being innovative and far from the Rokugan/Japanese-Oriental standard and wholly unique.
I do think that Rite Publishing did a good job converting the ES. However, the pdf also struck me as very unpolished, to the degree that I noticed all of the above problems while reading the pdf for the first time. On the plus side, though, this is an extremely iconic, versatile and cool class with but one balancing concern I have: Unlimited dispels will never, ever get into my campaign. Period.

I'll start with 5 stars for the beautiful pdf, nice artworks and awesome idea. Minus 1 star for the editing glitches, -1 star for the strange Knowledge variations that should be either explained or corrected as well as the 3.5.-synergy-remnants that have crept into both the "Gain Ch'i focus" and "Replenish Ch'i Reservoir" descriptions as well as the new Feng Shui skill. Then there is the strange double entry in the Feng Shui table. My final criticism is, that the class is quite complex and versatile and thus should be presented in the most concise way possible: Putting the feat that explains how many Ch'i points a character has and how to get them in the very end of the pdf, after both the class-features that mention the mechanic and the explanations of Ch'i feats and Chakra feats failed to mention where to find the basis for the mechanic they use: That is not good formatting. It's confusing at best, at worst it could dissuade potential players from playing the class. A simple "See page x, feat y" would suffice. I love the class to death, I really do, but as of now, with all the problems and the unlimited-counter-spell-ability, I can only give 2 stars. I really hope for it to be corrected soon. The awesome class that is the Enlightened Scholar deserves better.

I more or less agree with Endzeitgeist review, I am not as critical as he is but I agree with his over all feeling of the class. I am working on my own review, though End covered the majority of what I was going to say about it. Especially the short comings, right now I am leaning towards a 3 star review myself.

For advice on how to make the PDF better, fix the errors of course. Make the knowledge magic to arcane, the knowledge Anatomy to heal and drop the synergy. This would make it fit Pathfinder RPG better.

First; Thanks for taking the time to do a review, I will state that this is the problem with converting a single class as massive as Heroes of the Jade Oath from Arcana Evolved to Pathfinder Rpg.

For example Brandish Magical Might is a Feat in AE and workes exactly as stated, its an unlimited counterspell (this still requires a check, and is not an automatic success, and is only good when you ready and action to counter a spell). I went with a limited conversion attempting to leave a minimal footprint.

I hope to make an update when that is possible.

Endzeitgeist and Dark_Mistress, don't forget that it's Knowledge (arcana) not Knowledge (arcane). :)

Once the formatting problem/editing glitches are done and once we get a clarification on which Feng Shui DC 20 result to use, once the snyergy and skill remnants are gone, I'll vamp my review up to 4.5 stars, probably rounded up with a notice that the unlimited counterspell is not for every one.
I really hope for an errata and more HotJO - Conversions. I love this one, too and hope for an errata to make the awesome class live up to its coolness.
Oh yeah, thank you, Steve, for always being that approachable and discussing design decisions! You really helped me out with implementing the Wyrd. :)

I blame Endzeitgeist as I was just looking at his review and posting my reply. I made the silly mistake and assumed he spelled everything right. :)

I'm just going to blame it on the fact that I wrote this review in word an not online. My auto-correction jumbled the letters up. :)

I would like to thank you all for taking your time and energy to do reviews of our products and get the word out about Heroes of the Jade Oath. I am always delighted to hear when someone likes one of my ideas.

The Enlightened Scholar has been a favorite concept of mine from the very beginning of this project and was inspired by the likes of the real world Chinese physician, accupuncturist, revolutionary, and folk hero Wong Fei-Hung, Egg-Shen from "Big Trouble in Little China", Uncle from "Jackie Chan Adventures", Kang the Mad from "Jade Empire", the masked Yang Tianchun from "Iron Monkey", Fu-Manchu and many of those other villainous characters inspired by him, and traditional stories of Chinese inventors and Taoist alchemists from ancient times, as well as more Western characters like Dr. Who and Indiana Jones.

Anyway, the help you guys render by way of providing reviews is appreciated. I can only hope you like the other material from our product as well as you seem to like the Enlightened Scholar.

Oh the class is a good class. I just think it needs some tweaking is all. For this product it is mostly some of the conversions where missed where it doesn't sync up with Pathfinder as well as it should.

I found the Folk Magic ability confusing. The text refers to tables for spells per day and spells known, but those tables do not seem to be within the pdf.

@Boerngrim:
The enlightened scholar may
choose to prepare any spell from the divination and
illusion schools of magic and any spells with the curse,
darkness, light, mind affecting, negative energy, and
positive energy descriptors (regardless of school of
magic), provided he can cast spells of that level (see the
table). He prepares spells ahead of time, any of which
he can cast up to the maximum number of spell slots
available to him for each given level.

-That's all I was able to find, sorry. A quick scan for the table in my copy of HotJO-Beta didn't yield any results either.

I love your setting and will join the next jade Oath projects as well. And I really hope for the ES-PF conversion to get another overhaul so I can give it a better score. It's an awesome hell of a class, after all. One of the coolest I've seen for quite some time, imho. :)

Ashanderai,
I enjoy the wealth of cultural and historical material you bring to your designs, and I look forward to more.

Endzeitgeist - thank you for catching those typos. I might point out that the text here is over 100,000 words. Even some of the finest editors in the world have errors in their books. (It's happened to Paizo and to Malhavoc, to name two.) That said, we were a bit rushed and I wish we had more time. If you find more typos/errors, please do send them to us offlist so that we may incorporate them into the Omega edition. Any help is appreciated.

With respect to unlimited dispel magic (which this is not), have you had any experiences in your game that you can share? We need to learn from people's experiences to tweak the final class. (I personally have played high level casters and several versions of the Enlightened Scholar. Brandish seems to fill a nice niche where you have a chance to affect the outcome of a fight with options other than just fireballs.)

Dark Mistress - any specific points where you'd like to see conversion efforts or tips on things being more Pathfinder compatible? It's interesting thinking about a variant on a variant (Jade Oath uses Arcana Evolved) being applied to a different variant (Pathfinder).

Some of the big things I think is changing the skills as mentioned. Like anatomy to heal, magic to arcane, drop the synergy bonus from feng shui. Other than that I just think it needs another once over. I found a couple of parts a bit hard to follow and had to reread. Last time I chalked it up to being beta in the main book. But as I said above I am not as critical of it as End is, maybe cause I read the class once already in HotJO. So I had a easier time understanding it this time. Like one of the things End mentioned about the Awakened Chi didn't bother me, but then again I already knew about it, from before.

So mostly there is a couple of things that should be changed and then a couple of sections perhaps made a bit more clear.

I have been waiting to do my review and give you guys time to tweak it and reup load it, if you plan to.

@Varianor:

I don't have a problem with Brandish Magical Might , but rather with its unlimited uses. If you set up your PCs against a larger number of encounters with casting enemies, the unlimited number of counterspells allows the ES to counter without the PCs burning any resources and in my opinion, countering spells SHOULD burn resources.
Another problem I encountered today when playtesting the ES (lvl 12, I always playtest classes in one-shot prior to allowing them in my main campaign) with my group was, that the ES actually was told to get ready to counter spells and spell-like abilities so the other PCs could concentrate on dealing damage. While this worked first, the player got a bit bored.

I just think that limiting the ability to once per ES-level+Wis-Mod or once for every 2 ES level+Wis Mod would be a good idea.

The ES will seldom run out of counterspells and can still do the job, but the uses have to be conserved and may run out, forcing the players to use the ability with tactic rather than routinely.

And I know its not unlimited dispel magic, but it is unlimited dispel magic counterspell use with an added WIS-mod to the check, being imho a better counterspell than using up a dispel magic , a limited resource.

I hope I could be of assistance. :)
Just my 2 cents, of course. I've already changed BMM to lvl+Wis-mod uses for my home campaign. :)

Edit: I ran over ES and sent all the typos and stuff that is not perfect to Steve and will help you guys with HotJO-conversions in the future. I'm definitely not perfect, but I'll do my best to catch those little errors. :]

And the help is much appreicated.

I was hoping to get this up today, but time hit me again, as I stalled on some design work.

I should have the update by the end of the week.

I was thinking a limit like 3+ wisdom modifier for Brandish Magical Might?

3+Wis mod would be a good idea if you're going for a Brandish that can be used as often as a normal ability.

If you want it to be usable more often, I'd go with 0.5 times the Es-class-level+Wis-mod uses.

Depends on what you'd like to do with the design.
I'm good either way. :)

Scarab Sages

An update of the PDF is available at RPGNOW (where I got mine). the update still does not include spells per level and per day for Folk magic in the tables.

Disclaimer: After reviewing version 1.0. I stepped up and tried to help improve the pdf, to make it more accessible and Steve has implemented many of my suggestions. That is very rewarding to see and shows an admirable willingness to support and improve products!

This full-color pdf clocks in at 25 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page credits, 1 page ad and 1 page OGL, leaving a whopping 21 pages of crunch and fluff for this class, and rest assured, the space has been put to good use.

What is the enlightened scholar? Well, remember Kang the Mad from Bioware's Jade Empire? The Uncle in Jackie Chan movies? The Enlightened Scholar is all of this and even more. Mechanically, it's a D6, 6+Int skill ranks, 1 good save class that has a monk-like improving unarmed attack that gets better as he progresses as well as a bonus to AC.
The major abilities of the ES, however, are abilities selected from diverse fields of knowledge, so called enlightened knowledge-abilities he may select from several fields.

The fields are:
Academia (Knowledge + Languages), Feng-Shui (alter the flow of of fate, exorcise with a broom), Folk Magic (makes the ES a minor preparing spellcaster), I Ching (Divination and prediction abilities), Invention (trapfinding and creating strange devices and the like), Medicine (gives helping healing abilities), Nei Tan (internal alchemy), Warfare (Help allies with strategy), Wei Tan (external alchemy).

Each of the fields has several different abilities to choose from and you may switch freely from field to field, however, some of the abilities with a given field have additional prerequisites (skills, feats and other enlightened knowledge abilities). They all have in common that they utilize some legendary features of wise men from Chinese legends, movies and games. Ever wanted to create a conveyance that can swim and fly with or without weapons, usable by you alone or by groups?

There are actually rules for this in the pdf!

Want to combine potions? Bombs? Be a know-it-all? The ES can be all that, and more!

Very interesting is, among others, the ability to Brandish Magical Might, which enables him to counter spells cast by others if he readies an action. The ability is usable once per day per two class levels and does not cost any spell slots or the like. He can also use this check to overcome SR.

The whole class takes up 15 pages and is advanced in every sense of the word: Interesting, complex and many options to consider. The ES is certainly not a class to pick-up-and-play, but rather a versatile and complex class that is definitely rewarding to play. Additionally, everything has been done to make the class as comprehensive as possible.
We also get 1 page with a new skill, the Feng Shui skill.

After that, we get 4 pages of Ch’i and Chakrafeats, which I liked. They are cool and the system they utilize is now in V.2.0 easier to understand for people who don't have access to Heroes of the Jade Oath.

Conclusion:
The Es is an extremely iconic, versatile and cool class that makes me not only think of one potential character-concept, but whole campaign-arcs around them either as PCs or NPCs, or both.

I'll start with 5 stars for the awesome idea and the willingness to improve the pdf and for making this very versatile, complex class easy to understand and implement. Unfortunately, one of the numerous enlightened knowledge abilities (Folk Magic) still lacks a table and so I'll have to detract one star. Rest assured, though, that the pdf still has more than enough highest quality crunch to satisfy your gaming needs. Highly recommended and here's to seeing the folk magic table in V.3.0. ;)

Hi

Just quick questions about this table - where do we find it or can someone put a link to it.

I have relooked at my downloads here and cannot see it.

Quick other questions which has not been raised so far....

why has there been a deviation from the normal PFRPG standards with medium BAB classes having D8 hitdice and also seems to have a new form of medium saves (upto +9 over 20levels)? surely having D8 would not be too overpowering.

Last question..."potent spell component" in folk magic tree seems overpowering allowing essentially free metamagic for added spell focus such as fish. Does it mean you have to have the feats or not ? Do they add on the fly and increase to full round casting? Do they increase level as usual? Should there be some mechanic or daily limit on it to maake it less powerful? certainly my GM would not allow this.

Thanks in anticipation

I had the same question, any word Steve?

Its a carry over from the Arcana Evolved conversion which uses d6 and medium save bonuses, if I was doing errata right now I would give it D8 and low save bonus.

This is why you don't let the guy with AE on his brain do the conversion (my home game is a AE/BoXM/Pathfinder Hybrid) I am much better at doing a ground up design for Pathfinder hence why Kusa was handled by someone else. And I promise never to attempt a conversion again.

Groovy, easy enough to modify if used, and if you ever update the PDF on here it'll be perfect. No rush (for me at least) just wanted to check and see.

I have a few questions.

The level 20 capstone ability is listed as Immortal Knowledge, but there is no write-up for this ability. Should we treat this as another Enlightened Knowledge pick?

The downloadable Folk Magic tables show spell progressions from class level 1-20, but the Folk Magic ability cannot be selected until level 5, due to prerequisites. At level 5, the class starts with 1st and 2nd level spells, which is a bit unusual.

Several of the Enlightened Knowledge ability descriptions seem to have text chopped out of them (Divert the Negative Course & Sweeping Exorcism). Also, the Enlightened Knowledge table's prerequisite skill ranks are still in AE form (3 ranks too high).

All in all, I found this a very flavorful and flexible class, though I have a feeling the Folk Magic ability is a no-brainer at level 5.

Edit: Oh, and does this class cast spells as arcane spells or divine spells (with respect to spell failure, prestige class prerequisites, and other areas where this makes a difference)? My default assumption is arcane.
