A Pathfinder Roleplaying Game supplement for PCs level 1-5 by Creighton Broadhurst

The village of Swallowfeld stands hard against the turbulent waters of the Lonely Coast and the forbidding depths of a trackless, primeval forest. A hard, frontier place hemmed in by danger without and threatened by a lurking darkness within the village is in dire need of doughty protectors.

This 37-page, extensively bookmarked PDF presents detailed information on village life as well as ten locations and twelve NPCs of note. A GM can use the village as the perfect base from which neophyte adventurers can explore the surrounding area or as a waystop on the road to adventure. Although Swallowfeld’s default location is the Lonely Coast (a free 30-page, extensively bookmarked PDF) it is easy to include in any GM’s campaign.

This ZIP file now includes two versions of Swallowfeld, one optimised for printing and use on a normal computer and one optimised for use on a mobile device such as an iPad. You can learn more about Raging Swan's Dual Format PDF initiative at

Has almost everything you could want

The Village of Swallowfeld is a terrific source book and an excellent starting point for a new party. It has 37 pages of information, just about everything you could hope for, on a simple village! Set on the outskirts of civilization that typify the start for many adventuring parties, it has a gritty, lived-in feel to it that adds authenticity to the setting. In addition to excellent background information on the general locale, geography, economy, and culture, the key NPCs are extremely well developed and include portraits that help bring them to life.

Perhaps the only deficiency I can find is in the maps. The key map of Swallowfeld seems rather sparse. Also, there are no maps for the buildings themselves. Yes, I can whip up a map of the garrison, the inn, or the temple off the top of my head, but the primary purpose of the source book is to save GMs time, and this seems like an oversight.

Overall, however, the source book is a terrific value and extremely useful. Don’t hesitate to pick it up.

A solid low-fantasy location that feels real

Swallowfeld has a great medieval feel. Though clearly a (low-)fantasy setting, it gives the quasi historic vibe that I like. It is a classic but believable place, with its bailiff, its distant lord up in his castle, its cowardly village reeve... It is also a place with potential for adventure. I would not build an entire campaign in this place, but it is certainly rich enough a setting for me to use as a recurring resting place for the PCs.

The village of Swallowfeld is the kind of setting book I like. It gives a great overview of an area, describing the village folks and notable locations, local events and a few adventure seeds. It also covers topics as diverse as the diet of the inhabitants, the industry and the local festivals and traditions. Those topics are covered in just enough sentences to give a distinct feel to the place, without drowning the reader in encyclopaedic details. It’s all gaming material, easily usable and highly evocative.

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a good plug-and-play village to put on the path of your PCs.

Oh, and the printed product is really nice! The black cover, in particular, looks very elegant on the printed book.
