One or more PCs contracts the horrible disease. Symptoms worsen. Time is running out. A couple days before the PC's impending death, when his friends are becoming desperate, a nymph/angel/demon/whatever -looking creature approaches them. "I can heal you," she says, "in exchange for a small favor in a few months. Nothing you can't handle."

When the PCs accept, she heals the PC in question. He is back to full health. The only difference is a new tattoo on his arm, in the shape of a vine looping around his forearm.

When a few months have passed and you've gone further with your intended storyline, the nymph/angel/demon/whatever reappears and asks for the favor. You can tie this into your current quest or make it something completely new (if the PCs have just finished their current task). If the PCs try to refuse the offer or cheat their healer, the vine tattoo acts as a mark of justice that first begins constricting the PC's arm in warning, and then takes effect one day later if the PC hasn't resumed the quest.

The fun part is that if the PCs keep getting in trouble and dying, the healer can keep popping up and telling the PCs the favor she seeks will be "just a little greater." I used this once over the course of a campaign, having the nymph reappear half a dozen times (the PCs kept getting themselves in trouble), and eventually the PCs had to travel to Hell to regain something stolen from the nymph. It was loads of fun.
Here's a side-quest idea:

But it only works when you do it in a way that's easily reversible—not putting someone out of the game for a couple days—and that won't make anyone angry or permanently change their character.
Richard's ideas are slightly better, because they're less drastic effects, but again, this is like you're trying to DM from the player's seat. I'm running a game starting in about a month and need a little advice. There are going to be five players, and I'm used to GMing for 2 or 3. I've been GMing for a few years but have never had a group of this size before.

I'm worried that 1) because this group is mostly new players, combat is going to take forever. Any advice on how to speed up combat with a large group?
And 2) I'm worried that in a larger group role-play will have to play second violin to roll-play. In a small group, each character gets a lot of face-time, and party splits aren't too hard because there are fewer people to get bored (and the group I usually run for, who unfortunately just graduated, are at least as interested in hearing each other's stories as they are playing their own). How can I make sure that role-play and character development is still important in a large group?

One thing I had thought of was that if the party splits, the two or three who are in a different place could role-play and talk amongst themselves. I would feel okay doing this with experienced players, but I don't know about new players. Thoughts?

If anyone needs more information, the setting is Land of the Linnorm Kings, hopefully eventually crossing over into Irrisen, and I'm only planning on going levels 1-6, medium XP track.
Like Geraint said, if you want to show a woman whose personality or job is that she uses sex to get ahead—fine, she can be as porny as you want. Want to illustrate a fey who lives in the wilderness and doesn't culturally wear clothes? She should be illustrated naked.

The problem is that this character is not a prostitute, or a priestess of Calistria, or a creature of the wilderness. She's a woman living in a pseudo-medieval town. If a real woman wore that in the Medieval era, she'd be raped or beaten.

The problem, in general, is that artists think it's okay to objectify women in the very center of the cover of a product that is not specifically a porn magazine. This is never done to illustrated men in RPG products. It is always done to women.

So this means that (1) our culture still believes that women are valuable people only if they cater to male ideals—they either have to be a sex symbol or a man-in-woman's-body, and there is no in-between, while men can be valuable in many ways—and (2) artists like this assume that mostly men will be reading this product, and thus they need to appeal to the male gaze, which assumes that (3) male RPG gamers are shallow and horny. So it's not just objectifying one woman, it's degrading the hobby and stereotyping male gamers.

They don't know the rules yet, but they are more willing to try methods other than combat. They run away from really hard encounters and regroup rather than fight to the death. They bargain with people rather than fight them. They let the villains finish their speeches.

The group of experienced players I've had over the past few years is a lot different. They're nice people, and generally good at role-playing, and they know all the rules. But they always try to kill any creature they can detect as evil, they are less likely to be creative in their approaches, and worst of all they seem to think they're entitled to win every time. When they lose a battle, they get disappointed, and even when they've been warned by numerous NPCs (and even their own Sense Motive checks) that the villain is much more powerful than them, they try to kill him anyway. I've been trying to give them some challenges that aren't just hack-and-slash challenges, because frankly those bore me if they're the only thing we do, but they still treat every challenge as if they can—and should—be able to beat it to a pulp, and if they can't they get really disappointed.

How can I get my experienced players to act more like the new players? I've asked them some questions and it seems they acted like the newbies when they first started playing. How can I get that attitude back?
I've discovered over the last few years, after DMing with both new players and experienced players, that I actually prefer DMing for noobs. Its going to be a person the party is going to want to avoid at all costs or else they will literally be thrashed to pieces.

3. I'll have to look over other archetypes for the paladin, although the Sacred Servant is somewhat close to what I am looking for. All the same, multiclassing may be another viable option, just to get the proper feeling for the character.

1. I wouldn't take ranger, and here's why: Ranger gets either an animal companion or a terrain bond, neither of which sound really appropriate for this guy. They get spells, too, and a bunch of other abilities that don't seem to really fit the "aristocrat" feel. If I'm off base on the flavor, though, I think ranger is a fun class, and has great combat potential depending on the combat style you pick.

2. There is a feat from the APG, I believe it's called "Raging Vitality," that allows you to have an extra +2 bonus to Con while raging. Additionally, since it sounds like this guy is someone's lab experiment, you might want to give the NPC no gear—instead of gear, give him a +4 bonus to Constitution. Make up for the loss of loot by putting some expensive equipment in the lab that the PCs could sell.

You might also look up the Flesh Golem in the Bestiary.

3. How about paladin/sorcerer/eldritch knight or paladin/sorcerer dragon disciple? I don't know how high level you are going for, but at mid- to high-level these are great builds because they allow you to exploit your Charisma to the fullest. You get to use Cha for basically everything.
Tyrantherus wrote:1. Definitely will take the time to look up.
1. Make a rogue with the "knife-fighter" archetype (Ultimate Combat), I think, only replace the word "knives" with "darts" when looking at its special abilities.

2. Try a barbarian—when he "hulks out," that's equivalent to the barbarian's rage class feature.
A tip about barbarian: When making their stat blocks, just go ahead and factor the rage in. A barbarian will rarely enter combat without his rage on, and he will usually have enough rounds of rage available to either trounce the PCs or get trounced—battles don't usually last too long.

3. If you're looking for a neutral-aligned spellcaster with melee abilities, I suggest the Magus. If you're trying to make a gritty (but still LG) paladin, check out the "Sacred Servant" paladin archetype from the APG.

If making non-caster NPCs is hard for you, remember that you can just "re-skin" stat blocks from the Bestiary or GameMastery Guide. Your players will never know the difference between a human gladiator that's using the boar's stat block (just replace Gore with Greatsword) and a human gladiator that's using an actual human fighter stat block, I promise.

If you want more tips, or need someone to design specific NPCs for you, I'd be happy to help. I love this kind of thing.
These are NPC ideas, right?

I never use these spells in combat, though—only to add to the plot. When they finally fight the BBEG, they eventually realize I used charm on them—this allows them to keep playing their character realistically without feeling like they've lost control.MisterSlanky wrote:Malaclypse wrote: There are fun and no-fun ways to mess with your players. Really, all you're doing dips entertaining your friends. The point is that the experience should be fun for all of you, including the GM. When planning the game, keep that in mind. Have fun making quirky NPCs. Do their voices and accents; no one cares if you're doing the Italian accent wrong as long as you do it flamboyantly wrong.

To take a lot of the pressure off yourself, remember this one tip... The rules aren't important. They're there to facilitate your game, not to stress you out. There are probably one or two people in your group who know the rulebook backward and forward and would be happy to help you out whenever you need it. Of course you should read the book and try to have a general idea of the rules, but don't stress too much. Once you've been GMing for a while, you'll find that you remember the rules better by using them.

If you really are worried about your lack of rules knowledge, make yourself a little notebook or cheat sheet to hide behind the GM screen.

The most important thing is to have fun. Remember, you're roleplaying, not roll-playing. The dice don't own you, and ultimately you're the GM and what you say goes. Your gaming group will be supportive of any little flaws as long as you're having fun, and if they're not, you shouldn't be gaming with them anyway.
I promise you, GMing is nowhere near as scary as it seems. Very helpful. I'm just a bit concerned about CG and LE working together—their backstories are quite different and dramatic, and they're going to play a large part in the storyline. I'm not quite sure how to get both of them to work together to protect the rogue, especially if he's on the run from a rather large and dangerous organization. If I can get them to ally against this group, though, I think I have nothing to worry about.
