But suddenly a memory came to me in a flash. Back in Dalliance, back with Zove...was that a dream or a memory? Someone else's memory? There was something about Raseri's weapons I just realized was rather familiar...I had seen that maker's mark before in fact.
It seemed clear now, these were none other than the Raserian Artifacts Zove's undernetwork had used to fund their schemes against the Shadowsworn. My muscles tensed in anticipation of a precise knick across the frigid apple dangling at the Thorsdottir's gullet.

But then I caught a glimpse of Gunnar, really thinking it over like...reminding me of practicalities and such. Maybe there was a deal to made here, in the end.

I heard the pity in Burst's voice, thinking only of reprieve from the cold and ice. Maybe mercy was no less than I would want, cornered in the cold.

The anticipation, bordering fear, from my beloved Prophet...who knew-before-I what was about to pass here. Maybe I had at last learned the shame-sting of pure murder.

If one looked closely they would find an imperfection in the shape of a ghoul dong. I ended with splashes of pink in large wasteful quantities around the scene...just to make it look more gnomish.

You know, just between you and me, I had another thought acreepin' in the shadows of me mind. That streetwise nose of opportunity, however bleak, was hard to shake off an old dog. I figured with their camp leaking squad after squad, a focused strike team could spearhead an attack from the flank and really polish off what Burst started. Of course, that would mean sacrificing the innocents we just helped start their run.

Yeah, was a bad situation, them plains at dusk. Dark thoughts were too easily sneakin' in. Me? Well, sure I was wantin' to survive and get the hell out of there quick. I tried to hint at hopelessness without bein' so cynical. I remember sayin' something like "Unless we've a way of getting ALL of us outta here fast, they're gonna come at us in waves until we're weathered and round-stone dead."

I could see the battle fury in Crackles' eyes. The happy-go-lucky trust the Prophet had in his visions. The nurturing, unwavering protector spirit in Griz. They'd go down here and now for them people. It was Gunnz' cold tactical mind I appealed to. Burst's creative problem solving we needed more of.

For just a moment, an excursion into Shadow seemed a natural choice...though in any other case openin' a Road off the beaten Leypath would be suicide. I don't remember who brought it up but I was making sure to emphasize one point "...there's gotta be a way to collapse the thing behind us, that Shadow Portal, or the chase'll just expand to even less favorable terrain."

That horn promised little time to dally, and less to savor that first minor victory.

So yeah, Scram votes counterstrike the relatively undefended village while these recently released squads eat/recapture the prisoners. She'd go trawling for sticklebacks, fightin' off the dragonflies for teensy schools o' minnows with bone plates under their scales. We musta been makin' momma proud, trawlin' that ghoul across the steppes.

Heh. Was years later but I did a sneaky thing...hard to believe I know. Burst was composin' some spellsong like she does, makin' a right ballad of the "Death of the Little Ghouls Town" or whatever working title it were. She had passed out in a mental break from spiced wine that night (even though none of us encouraged her at all, I might add), and I snuck in a little lyric. You know, altered parchment. Sponge and lemon. Every thief worth her salt had a forger's script...and I were no stranger to cleft and treble. Anyhow, her original went somethin' like:

Suspended moon in the mist of summer's dusk,
the red caps guised as fire white,
asunder burst a soldier's camp,
dead soldier burst and camp alike.

I thought that had a pretty good rhythm. Well, truth be told I was drunk as all hell. Gunnar's f•ckin' cat mewin' at that point woulda brought me to god d•mn tears. You know, coulda been warpin my artistic critique and whatnot. But them later stanza was gettin' philosophical. Making some analogy about the 'old ways' and 'tides'...heh. Figured that was my chance to snatch the brush. Thing I love about the elven hand is the efficiency o' the vowels. Its just a matter of the height of certain vertical lines. Real easy to change:

That fisher's line weren't easy spent,
cursed hoplite banged and bent,
swept them off their feet,
a twist of chance taking them through the night.

Granted she noticed my change right away in the first performance, but not before she sang it! Was enough. The lyric spread among them cover-bards and it gave me a full-faced snicker like no other.

See gold is gold. Gems were gems. But what tickles me most? Beatin' the odds. Dekatron wasn't a beast refit with some infernal engine. Nay, that spotted and stolen magic weren't never goin' toe-to-toe with a Red Dragon. She were my lucky charm though, clear as day.

Then I could see the search for reason reach maximum overdrive in Gunner's eyes...and empathized. That's what I always liked about the dwarf, pragmatic in the face of absurdity...just like me.
The rope made the softest whiplash as its dangling end found only air, the thief slowly lowering himself down with his knees from above. His hands gripped a tiny pot of red paint, which looked white in the moonlight. His mouth gripped a paintbrush, and his eyes were locked upon the net of arcane alarms below, their silver strings almost glowing orange from some inner magic heat.

Scramsax had cased out the Blood Kingdom border town called Lingenau (at least when a certain black haired parasite survivor allowed him) and discovered some juicy dish: a recent widow with some crackerjack security. Light on brutes, heavy on mechanics...so the thief had heard it.

Just beneath the crisscrossing wires was a large hatch of an almost glossy black metal...some twisted, foreign alloy of iron created for just this purpose. It was the kind of thing a younger, less talented Scram would've researched thoroughly. Same story with the Splat Burglar 2000. The thief was stumped with the newest model of the classic anvil dropper, and a different Scram would've walked right then and there facing such uncertainty on the job.

This Scramsax only smirked.

The main event was an arm's length away, so nearly the entire height of the halfling. Scramsax of Barsella, where halfling street kids go fishing often...as both the bait and the hook. The ultra-lithe body of the paradoxically heavy smoker was no stranger to acrobatics on the end of a line.

But then there it was, the combination cipher-time lock said to be powered by the soul of some insane creature from the realms of chaos. 37 sigils were arranged in 6 groups, themselves hexagons. The final leftover symbol was in the center, but as Scramsax lowered closer he could see it wasn't some code-script after all but a glass sphere. Inside the sphere was a white, powdery mist and a single green leaf hung there motionless. Green like the first sprout of spring. The time lock. Once a hex was chosen the leaf would wither, and when there was nothing but microscopic black dust left on the mist the device would halt...rendering any further attempts impossible by an arcane layman like Scram.

Neither Scram past, present, or future could really come to grips with something like that. Of course he knew some tricks for quick calculations...those things called 'logarithms' the sailor sages use to turn multiplication into addition. But here the possible combinations were simply too many to brute force. And, as a magical device, it provided no sensory feedback...other than perhaps manufactured ones to fool the would-be thief.

But meh, it didn't really matter, so thought the halfling.

Scram simply painted a little fist sized hole in the panel, reached in and snagged the widow's stash.

He then painted over the hole a perfect repair. Only a magnifying glass would reveal the tiny, hidden dong etched onto the surface.

~~~
The street's shadow bent like the trees in the wind, flitting from here to there masked by some white noise. Scram had snuck back to the hardest to reach rooftop before even checking the score.
A silver scalpel rolled into his hands.
Hrm, I think RP in my last post kind of stalled with Jub and I out of town. So just hand waving that at some point Aterro supplied Scram with some paladin magic.
