Horgus used to be a noble of relatively low status. He was not known for his generosity nor for his loyalty to the cause of the crusaders. Heretofore, the only cause he seemed to embrace was the preservation and increase of his personal wealth. But the trauma to the city and his experiences under the city, perhaps, seemed to work a transformation on him. Furthermore, his personal wealth was not significantly decreased by the attack on Kenabres, so he seemed to have taken it as a sign that he could actually give up some of his wealth in the cause of defeating the threat of the Worldwound.

In any case, while securing provisions for the march to Drezen, the group had several times used Horgus' connections to purchase supplies. He sensed something was up and offered to give you extra rations provided he could accompany you on the march to make sure the provisions were properly managed.

"It is the least I can do for all you've done for me," he said as he made the offer.

As preparations took place in the Defender's Heart, another familiar face was seen, Horgus Gwerm. He arrived at the Heart packing as much of his wealth as could be carried, having caught the attention of a passing patrol and gaining escort to the old inn. He placed the items into the general battle fund, which allowed the crusaders more supplies for the fight than they were expecting, raising morale significantly. If any of the heroes made eye contact with him, he nodded and gave a weak smile before moving away.

Horgus' expression brightened when Ellena said, "Keep my share." It dimmed just as fast when she instructed him to give her share to Wren and her family. When Tauni suggested she wanted or needed an excuse to visit him, he looked a little taken aback, apparently not used to people visiting him without wanting to wheedle some money out of him. "My door will always open to you, provided you give the knock. When services to Abadar resume, we should attend," he suggested tentatively, trying on the feeling of having some hope of life returning to normal. "I have set 2000 gp aside for your use. Divide it any way you please. I owe you my life."

Then his gruff old self returned and he ran back into the house, saying, "What demons didn't destroy, a house full of children will surely ruin."

The next stop as the group heads north would be the apartment Irabeth and Anevia shared. It is about a quarter mile away, but the group will have to cross another gash that cuts west to east across the eastern Gates district.

Meanwhile, Horgus emerged from the manor. "My worthless guards and servants have all deserted their posts, may Asmodeus take them! They helped themselves to a considerable amount of my more valuable possessions!"

He glared about, waiting for others to share his indignation. Then he continued, somewhat reluctantly, "But Abadar be praised, they did not know how to open my vault. If you still want that reward I offered, I will honor my promise, although it will leave my coffers severely depleted." He tried to look poverty stricken at the prospect of paying out all that gold, but his attitude toward the group had softened considerably over the past week and it did not take much wisdom to tell that he was exaggerating both his financial limitations and his reluctance to pay you what he promised, mostly a conditioned reflex of years of being as stingy as possible with his wealth. "You probably don't want to wander the ruins of Kenabres with all that gold weighing you down, so I'll be happy to keep it in my vault until such time as it is safe to transport it."

He invited Wren and her family inside. "The house is intact and we can keep safe inside so long as one of those gigantic demons of destruction does not return. These walls are secure and all the windows have bars."

"You are welcome to stay too, if you need to. Or if you want a safe place to sleep tonight, just knock four times, then three, then five. Then I'll open the door."

"Hmmph. I guess it's all right for people to be seen coming and going from my home. They can stay in one of the servant's rooms. But I'm not changing diapers!"

Wren led the group to a shop where several younger siblings were hiding. She had to coax them out and then gave them stern instructions to stay close to her and keep quiet. She picked up the toddler and the group set out for Gwerm Manor.

The city was quiet, but now and then a scream could be heard in the distance or the growl of an animal. Vultures circled here and there. As the group arrived in the neighborhood, Horgus gave a sigh of relief when he saw his house still stood, with no evident damage. Horgus threw caution to the wind and raced toward the door of the manor which stood slightly open.

Before anyone could warn him to wait, a woman started screaming, "NO! Stay away! No!".

Men's voices came from the same direction: "In the name of Iomedae, it is your duty!" and "Do not resist. It will be over quickly!"

Initiative and a map upcoming.

Horgus scowled and looked suspiciously at the woman. "If looters haven't made off with everything, I suppose.... Why don't we escort them to the library first. They have enough food to share."

Male Human Aristocrat 4

Horgus began to get impatient as the crusaders examined the ruined manor. "There's obviously nothing here! My manor is very near. Why aren't we heading for it?" A little of his early haughtiness returned. "We've only got to go a little east, to get back into the Gates and around that place where the ground has collapsed and it should be just to the north. Every moment we delay is another chance for looters to rob me of all I own!"

"Of course. No point in going off half-cocked when it's dark as Descari's ... Well, when it's so dark. But we need to be smart. Karas leads. Those with magical lights keep the light shaded so we can just see enough to follow him. No point in ringing the dinner bell."

Assuming everyone is okay with this:

The crusaders formed a line led by Karas and kept their lights dim. The group went along the edge of the large gouge in the earth until Karas slowed and indicated the librarium was ahead.

Karas sees the outline of the Librarium but much of the former complex has been reduced to rubble. All that remains is the Librarium's facade and its reinforced great hall. Curiously, the buildings surrounding Blackwing, as the Librarium is commonly called, seem not to have been as damaged, as though Blackwing were singled out for destruction. The front door is ajar.

With lights dimmed everyone could see faint flickers of light through broken masonry and a voice could be heard inside saying, "Stack the damn books better!" The voice speaks common with a Hallit accent. Nothing else appears to be stirring nearby, yet.

See the map link. Everyone is at the bottom right in no particular order. Order yourselves and proceed to investigate.

"My manor is that way. The sooner we get there, the sooner I can ... the sooner you can get my reward and have a soft bed to sleep on," Horgus stated bluntly, also ready to move on. He seemed annoyed that others were concerned to keep the cultists alive, but did nothing to stop them from moving them to some kind of shelter. "We should tie them up and come back when we've found other crusaders. There may be a reward for scum like this."

Male Human Aristocrat 4

After listening to Franti's vision of what they might soon find, Horgus scoffed, "Don't get your hopes up. Farmers don't build sewers under their fields. If we're lucky, though, we'll come up close to my manor. Remember, there's a reward of gold for you all if you get me to my house and there my vault has not been broken into."

Anarya wrote:
"All those names sound familiar, though I don't seem to remember much about them. Estrod... That's that big gray tower in New Kenabres, right? Horgus, do you know anything about these buildings?" Anarya had seen Horgus's discomfort, and gently offered him the chance to open up about what he might know.

Horgus seems a bit tongue-tied, but eventually speaks, "I have had business dealings with Kandro Nyserian. I had no idea.... " Horgus paused and glanced at Anevia. "He borrowed money from me not long ago in order to buy a sword. It happened to belong to Irabeth. I thought nothing of it at the time. Now I wonder why he wanted the sword."

Male Human Aristocrat 4

"What safe houses?" Horgus asked, alarmed. Anevia gave him the note and he read aloud, "Nyserian Manor, Topaz Solutions, and the Tower of Estrod." Ellena took the note and after reading it, summarized it for Anarya.

Anarya, Avelina, Franti, Tauni:
Anarya, Avelina, Franti, Tauni all noticed a tone of surprise in Horgus' voice and worry in his face, although he tried to hide it.

Horgus opened a potion and shoved it under the nose of Aravashnial. "What is this? Is it a potion?" He also held a couple of scrolls and a small glass bottle with a dusky liquid inside.

Horgus beamed at Anarya's praise and thanked her when her channeled energy healed his minor cut. His attitude changed and he did not complain or try to order anyone about. He kept his rapier out and held the torch high, watching out the door that led back to the entry tunnel, keeping an eye out for enemies from behind.

Horgus took small steps as close to the edge as he dared and peered down. "Better to just lower me down and throw the rope over and pull me up. I not a monkey or a mountain goat."

Horgus spoke up and said, "A huecuva forms at the death of a priest or cleric who has cursed the god or goddess he worshiped. They can be real trouble if they get near a settlement, because of their ability to look normal. They try to destroy those who keep the vows they could not. The floating head, that would be a much rarer type of undead. Sometimes called 'beheaded', they sometimes are used as guardians of crypts, protecting the tomb of the corpse buried there. Little is known of how they form. Once we get back to the surface, we can add to what is known about that." He looked more relaxed now that he was in a temple.

When Franti and Tauni later thanked him for the holy water, he nodded and seemed pleased by their words.

Horgus seemed grateful for the attention. Anarya had trouble understanding all he said because it was difficult at times to walk side by side and he kept talking even when the oracle could not see his face to read his lips. She was able to fill the gaps without much trouble, however. "My family was well-established in Mendev and all was well until a band of babau demons attacked the manor, killed my family. I was just a boy then, but when I inherited the family's wealth, I pledged to use it to fight the incursion. It is a thankless job for the most part. The crusaders get all the glory, which is as it should be I suppose, but nobody realizes how hard it can be to invest wisely, to keep the corrupt from bleeding the wealth of the city for their own private gain. One time ..." and he went on for a while about some generally boring stories about how he avoided being swindled and embarrassed some other nobles who were squandering resources meant for the fight against the demons.

"Good shot, Anevia! Keep a way clear for the archers and slingers to get shots in!" Horgus shouted to the fighters in the middle of the fray.

Horgus blushed a bit and said, "Aye, the score is even, and I'll promise no more insults to the queen, whom I respect, I assure you, provided this young ..." he paused and seemed to replace the word he was about to say with another, "lady quits acting like she knows more than a veteran of the Worldwound like Aravashnial and Anevia here. You know nothing about us and treat us like we should...."

Horgus noticed both Anevia and Aravashnial frowning at him, and he stopped mid-sentence.

When Avelina slapped Horgus, he took it with aplomb, as if he had been slapped by women before and felt no embarrassment or remorse.

Male Human Aristocrat 4

As Avelina nattered on about herself, Horgus groaned to himself and muttered, not so softly that those nearby could not hear, Gods and Goddesses! Who died and made you queen!

After Ellena introduced herself, Horgus said, "Enough! I am Horgus Gwerm. My investments and donations help keep this place running. How about we get on with the task of figuring out a way back to the surface. Looks like the fool over there has spotted a tunnel. Let's get a move on before the demons destroy everything. If you can get me to my manor before it gets looted, I'll give you lot a 1000 gold pieces as a reward. Now let's get moving."

Male Human Aristocrat 4

Horgus looked at the elf with surprise. "There's plenty of light. Are you blind?" The way he asked the question did not suggest he fully realized that Aravashnial was in fact blind, or if he did, he demonstrated no sympathy for him.

From the far corner of the cavern, next to Ellena and Avelina, a man's voice rang out after the area was lit. It was the voice of man used to giving orders and having them obeyed. "You! Warrior woman! Help me up." The man appeared middle-aged and his fine clothing was now dirty and torn in places, but the man himself did not appear injured. He had no weapons or armor.
