Background:
300 years ago the Dwarven kingdom of the Five Mountain Kings came under the control of the priesthood of Droskar. This new theocracy proved oppressive and cruel, driving many families to escape their homeland in favour of more productive lives elsewhere.
Ulan's father and grandparents were one such family who escaped north, looking for work in the River Kingdoms as metalsmiths, eventually settling in the recently established city of Daggermark. The Tokadar family name eventually became respected for its craftsmanship and quality.

But the peace was short lived. King Athanasius XIII was poisoned (4619 AR) and the Tokadar family decided that this was a sign for them to return to their homeland (the dwarven tyranny had long since fallen). Yet despite the turmoul Ulan's father had enjoyed success so much that he refused to abandon his business. He remained behind with a dwarven bride.

Several decades later, Breggel was born and Ulan closely followed (4653 AR). Tragically, their mother died during a food riot during the famine of 4658 AR leaving their father to raise his infant sons alone. Somehow, the two of them survived the turmoil and both brothers learned the skill of blacksmithing.

Eventually, the chaos calmed down and business resumed as before. Indeed, the smith scarcely stopped as new orders came in and the Tokadar business thrived.

Several years ago, with Breggel and Ulan now reaching adulthood and their apprenticeships coming to an end, their father bought for them a small blacksmith shop on the poorer side of town so they could expand the family business. Pleased with the opportunity to make a name for themselves, the brothers gladly agreed.

Ulan and Breggel have been working the new forge for several years now and remain in contact with their father, although the old dwarf is more interested in his business and amassing wealth than his family these days (not an uncommon trait in elderly dwarves).

Though business was good in the wealthier district, harsh competition and criminal activities have made life difficult for the young dwarves in the poorer suburbs. Thankfully, their natural skills and endurance have ensured their survival and although prosperity has thus far eluded them they have never gone hungry.

Ulan hopes to raise enough gold to forge himself the finest armor and become a hero of legend, like the dwarves of old. He has a keen interest in the old ways of his people and is quite devout in the worship of Torag.

Ulan still loves his forge but years of monotonous toil and modest pay is frustrating the ambitious young dwarf. He is starting to think it's time to move on.

Appearance and Personality:
Ulan comes across as aloof and indifferent to others, but his is mostly an act. Secretly, he is a nervous character who would treasure friendships with others, but whose withdrawn nature makes such things difficult.
Even so, he is brave and loyal, and opens up more during a good drink and a good scrap. Indeed, when not at his forge he is often in the local tavern doing just that.

His appearance is perpetually grubby from decades spent at the forges and he is not a handsome man by any means. Like most dwarves though, he takes special care of his beard though. His hair is brownish-red.
