Probably the most memorable moment I have ever had in D&D session was during a trip to a dwarven volcanic city. I was a Catfolk Sorcess/Dragon Disciple of combined 9th level and the two other players was an Alchemist and a Rogue also 9th level, the Alchemist with having a raised ogre skeleton with him.
We meet the king of said dwarf city and I immediately dislike him in character. It was pretty clear this guy was a greedy bastard out only for his own interests, but with a massive war brewing we had to insure his alliance through any means necesary.
As such we deal with a problem near a lake in one of his mines, a merman of some kind having turned dwarves into zombies.
Heading back I head to my quarters to identify some magic items we had found as I did not really want to meet the king again, disliking him heavily, while the Alchemist and Rogue heads to the king with proof of the kill, in this case the ogre skeleton carrying the corpse of the entire merman.
So I am out of the play for a bit when the Alchemist and Rogue agree to kill the king...because as they had figured out this guy would not help the war effort, so they needed him gone. And this might be their only chance to get close to him for a time.
Said assination went as follows:
The rogue pulls the pants down on one of two royal guards with a sleight of hand, incoveniencing him momentarily as the ogre slaps the other guard with the dead merman.
The ogre skeleton then holds the door shut while the Rogue and Alchemist goes to town, culminating in them throwing the king out of window.
The king grasps the edge of the window though and reveals that the volcano is magically rigged to blow if he dies (actualy intended by the DM despite the fact that we were going wildly off what he had imagined). Rogue only smiles and kicks the king to his death.
The entire city quakes and my characters guesses something is up and goes to find the other two, finding them fleing through the same window they kicked the king out of and yelling for my character to run.
The city gets destroyed, but alot of citizens get out, a chance the Rogue takes to offer them a new home in the country we represented...essentially insuring they would be there for the war...
Rogue and Alchemist got away scot free from all this and my character just stood dumbfounded along with the DM out of character.
