Tio is the direct descendant of the armies that landed from Tien, and her family has kept to their tradition of seeking enlightenment through training as monks. The increasing loss of magic in the world was immediately viewed as a problem - for them, even if they didn't use it, magic was a natural thing and could have some serious unintended consequences... and so, with a great degree of seriousness, they started looking for some way to add at least a little bit of power to their bloodline. They succeeded almost too well.

Tio has followed the traditions of her family and trained to become a monk - indeed, she enjoys simply sitting down with a good book and a cup of tea, and often carries both around with her. In just about every way, she tends to come across as noble, refined, and elegant - to say nothing of the air of innocence that tends to make people trust her. What most people (besides her close friends) don't know is that she's also a lycanthrope - her family deliberately acquired the power to shift into tigers, combining a supernatural effect with something that would bring them closer to the natural world.

As a result, Tio is even closer to nature than most monks are, but generally disdains transforming for combat unless she really has to. Her natural connection to nature made her a good fit as a Monk of the Four Winds, and her current goal is to reach self-perfection.

In recent times, however, the monks of Tio's family have begun to feel... uneasy. A few considered writing it off as just the results of the world being changed, but they were eventually talked around by the others, who felt that it was something worth being investigated. Eventually, Tio was selected to be the eyes and ears of the family and bring back knowledge of what was wrong - or solve it herself if that seemed like the most appropriate thing to do. With these commands going for her, she set out, following her instincts to locate the biggest problems in the world.

During the course of her travels, Tio came across a recently-graduated [Honors Scholar], wise in the ways of books and studying... which is something a monk can appreciate, particularly as she's not exactly dumb herself. However, most of Tio's knowledge is ultimately internal - faith, self-control, and similar matters... not historical trivia and other bothersome activities.
