As is her nature, Trihylla rises early to catch the dawn then busies herself crafting an assortment of tea and coffee for her housemates. She's become fond of cereals, and the fields in Merratt County, though often neglected in recent times, still produce a variety of suitable grains. With a little extra effort she has procured a daily arrival of fresh cream, and the combination is hearty of not sweet.

And so it is that she opens the door with bowl of cereal in hand, munching and slurping in response to Sir Gusairne's arrival.

She looks past the old knight at his retinue of surly characters including Lord Titus, then thrusts another spoonful of dried grains and milk into her mouth immediately before speaking.

"Good day, sir knight. Ah, and Lord Titus, the Baron's loyal pet! What an impressive show of force and male body odor. Rest assured, Lord Betony is a man of strict discipline when it comes to his obligations to the administration of local government and appropriations to that end." A spittle of milk flies from her mouth.

She takes another oversized mouthful before continuing. "Your arrival in person is completely unnecessary, for Lord Betony has already dispatched a carriage overnight with his tithe, direct to the Palace Birdsong. On my honor, the driver was given explicit instructions not to tarry in any place until the sum of one thousand gold is delivered. We expect his return and a receipt by the day after tomorrow, although, if you are not there to receive it that will clearly lead to a delay."

Bluff: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 2 = 28 ++Adaptive Luck

Triphylla gulps down her cereal and takes yet another large spoonful. "I'd invite you to stay but your group would be rather miserable here, as you can see. The estate is in a terrible state of disrepair and we've only begun to tend to it. Furthermore, we have not nearly enough wine to fill Lord Titus's renowned gullet. If you would not mind retreating to Stachys I will apprise his lordship of your arrival and recommend he supper with you and your assortment of frowning fellows at his earliest convenience. Now, if you have no other purpose for this visit, I bid you good day."

With that, the halfling closes the door and throws the bolt, then runs back to warn the others. While she runs she draws all of her extracts and mutagen and quickly swallows the bitter assortment of liquids. "Trouble has come! To arms!"

Shaken but not deterred.

Strom is incredulous and does not back down. "Do we look like an organized surprise attack to you? Ignorant?! Greenhorn?! You don't know one damn thing about any of us. How dare you speak to us like that after attacking us unprovoked! Put your axe away you old fool!

"Are you telling us that you leave your entire town defenseless for every time someone dies? And this nest of bramble with a wolf spirit is all you can muster to its defense?

"This town needs us a whole lot more than we need you, so Ah'll give you one last chance to compose yourself and apologize he points a finger at the dwarf druid SOB that disrespected him or Ah hit the road and don't look back, and you can go back to fending off the raiders or figuring out where to make your next settlement."

It take a lot to push Strom to anger, but this event did the trick. He stares daggers at the other druid.

"Inopportune? Inopportune! You bloody fool, we came at the most opportune moment possible, and you pissed away the miracle of our arrival by attacking us. Now you have the intolerable manners to blame us for worsening your plight! Whatever your bad luck, you've made it for yourselves. Do we look like goblins to you? Triphylla, still feeling the effects of the aggressive lock-picking, accepts the opportunity to stall for more time to rest. She drinks her extract of Focused Scrutiny and directs her voice to the rafters and the source of the announcement.

Just as Triphylla is about to wade into the water she notices that is is both brackish and deep. While she pauses to consider whether Lope would carry her on his shoulders if she asked, she notices a golden glint in the water. At first she feels excited but quickly realizes the gold is moving, and it's attached to something large and dangerous.

"Wait. There, you see? A goldpebble snake! Only a Taldan alchemist would think it was a good idea to create a large venomous snake that was itself imbued with actual gold. Should have stuck with lead, but now here we are. Still, she was at least partially successful in her effort." Triphylla can't help but feel a sense of awe at the power of her profession.

The halfling imbibes an antitoxin and just in case, she also drinks her extracts Shield and Expeditious Retreat.

Then draws some quicklime from her pack; she casts the white chalky substance into the water in the area of the snake.

"Hopefully we can scare it away."

"Yes, the taxes," Triphylla responds to Adrian. "I hear that's a real problem. Lord Betony was departing to resolve a tax dispute as I left for Cassomir. This is what happens under an absolute monarchy; The Emperor delegates to the local nobility, typically poor administrators of their own affairs, much less anyone else's. We're in for more of the same, I suppose. Although things might get a lot worse here in Cassomir if Maxillar wins the throne, being an exposed port city near our future enemies. And his war will come with a hefty price tag. No, I wouldn't want to be in your business - or any business - should Eutropia fail to claim her rightful status as Empress. Well, good day then."

Once they reconnect, Triphylla will ask Diana if she wants to go call on Tobias Long.

Strom bows to the King before turning to leave. "Your Majesty."

Upon arriving at the shop of the King's alchemist, Strom can't help but recoil. He is a servant of nature, and alchemy, to his nose, is anything but natural.

"Sir, the King, in his wisdom, has sent me to you to discuss the matter of the blighted land. The druid Darius, who tends to the fields, has tasked me with finding a trio of masters from across the land who may have insights as to the nature of the blight and what can be done about it. The first is an alchemist in Bracada's desert by the name of Mahmer Marige. Do you know this chymist and where I might hope to find them, more specifically?"

Her opportunity literally closing, Triphylla has no choice but to escape the guard room now without keys. She has learned, at the very least, that the tower contains the private residence for none other than the Emperor, on the extremely unlikely circumstance he should be in-country. Perhaps Eutropia would change that. It was highly doubtful that Pythareus would grace such a backwater with his presence. Anyway, in retrospect, would Count Lotheed entrust the keys to the Emperor's chamber to a common guard? Certainly not.

Triphylla doesn't believe the Count included her in his invitation for cognac, and she takes her cue from the seneschal.

"Intelligent weapons?" the halfling responds when Lope and Diana discuss the blackblade.

"I remember a story told to me many years ago by my grandmother of a sword that could think for itself and imposed its will on the bearer. Being a sword, it required a steady diet of adversaries falling along its edge to be sated, and it would typically turn on its wielder when it sensed a more powerful foe. In that way it was passed from warrior to warrior, each more capable than the last.

"After many hundreds of years it came to be possessed by the greatest swordsman who ever lived, and together they cut through vast armies; rivers of blood flowed in their wake. At long last, none remained before them. The world was filled with the stench of death, and no other person was left to be conquered and killed.

"So the sword turned on its final master, thrusting itself through his heart by his own hand. And there the sword waits to this day for another to pick it up so that the killing may begin again. My grandmother had a name for the sword - Storm, err, something. Is that the kind of weapon you speak of?"

When they first captured Deigo a couple hours ago Lapeidra had no expectation that the Last of Nine would be a shelter to a group of rescued hostages and their meager but not unsubstantial belongings. It occurred to her now that allowing Deigo to mix freely with his victims was a terrible outcome.

She tracks him down outside the ship, away from the others and out of view of the refugees. She has at least a few minutes while the engineers in the group figure out how to cram the salvage into the Leopard.

"You can't be seen by the refugees," she says bluntly. "Look, at the end of the day we're all mechwarriors for hire. I think the best way to honor our deal is to keep you in the crew quarters and out of sight. We'll find a bunk for you.

"But listen, I need more information. What's really going on here? You saw that Thunderbolt we took down; another half dozen heavies were right behind it. You've got a Marauder, a Battlemaster! Considering Lapeidra took 4 alpha strikes from a Thunderbolt and a Blackjack, pretty mild damage.

Also, both Markus and Jack run to -8 this round. You guys are so synced up you made the same typo.

It takes two full days scrubbing in the cold waters of the local river for Triphylla to exorcise the stench of undead evil from her body. she filled her belly with Opparan whiskey and let the push everything else out, forcefully. By the time the date of Dame Crabbe's engagement rolled around Triphylla was feeling mostly herself, although her appetite had not yet returned. She consoled herself by considering that any such battles in the future should only involve her claws and not her teeth. Her purge completed, she rejoins the others as they discuss their next task.

"While serving on a merchant ship years ago, en route to Cassomir, we would hear tales of the spirit which haunts the circle at the lake. The tales were often vivid and frightening, and the men believed that it and the Night Swan are one and the same.

"Now that it comes to mind, was not the Night Swan blamed for Bartleby's near murder? Those same locals believed the spirit could be appeased through gifts and sacrifices, but as you say, Lope, Bartleby ended that practice for practical considerations. Perhaps the Night Swan enjoyed the prior arrangement. But rumor is Bartleby tried to put an end to it by creating a monster of some kind by means of alchemy. It may be worth a return to the Palace of Birdsong to allow him to explain his thinking."

Compared to the splendor of the Palace of Birdsong, Stachys might as well be on another plane. She had tasted the desperation of the commoner with the encounter on the road. Recalling the brief exchange with the purveyor of magical items, Tessa, Triphylla was left feeling disappointed in the lack of entrepreneurial spirit. It was as if the hope had been snuffed out, and whatever possibility she was imagining for the people was impossible for them to realize.

She had the same feeling here in the rutty streets of Stachys. Not only had the town fallen into ruin, it was clear by neglect that the townsfolk had neither the means nor the will to do anything about it. Perhaps, years past, the windmill on the mill would have been quickly repaired, but now it sits as a testament to terrible management.

It quickly becomes obvious, as it did those many days earlier on the road, that the people need a spark, something to kindle and nurture to flame to revive the town and their livelihood. There were so many areas of neglect and opportunity...

After walking the town and getting a sense for the magnitude of problems she enters Piscum's tavern and orders a beer. Then, beer in hand, she orders a round for the house. Having bought the attention of the patrons she stands atop the stool and announces: "New friends, you may have learned that a Betony heir has recently arrived to Merratt County from Oppara. In his service I have authority to speak on his behalf. As his lordship has roots in this land, his goal is to restore the Betony Estate and return prosperity to Stachys and the surrounding lands."

She speaks with her performance voice, but doesn't overdo it.

Perform Oratory: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Triphylla continues. "As it is plain to see, I am not a noble. My parents worked hard in Oppara under the heel of the Emperor, and I was raised on the docks an merchant ships and among the street vendors in the lower marketplaces. I can tell you, from my low vantage point," she puts the palm of her hand down to make light of her stature, "that the most important aspect of prosperity is trust. You must trust that the price of a good is fair and represents the effort to produce it, plus a small profit. Trust creates incentive and incentive drives the economy."

She pulls a large bag of gold from her pack. "I ask you today to think about trust. The Betony heir would see this town prosper; it takes only your trust to get started. Now I realize things have fallen to disrepair hope is a shadow in the dark, but I have three-hundred gold pieces here, seed money for a new marketplace in the town square. There is more where this came from, but we do not give it out of charity. This is an investment in each of you and in this town. It is the start of a new future. Tell your loved ones, your neighbors, and your friends. Stachys' return to prosperity begins today!"

Do we hand-wave the exploration of the rest of the mansion or are we still in dungeon crawl mode?

Once the group settles in Triphylla muses, "I'd like to visit Stachys and see what the man on the street thinks are the priority concerns. It will give me a chance to relax - all these formal evenings with the aristocracy makes my skin crawl a little. And anyway, I hear there is a small halfling community in Merratt. We often feel differently about the direction of things, having a perspective closer to the ground."

Triphylla would be happy if someone wanted to join here but she's content to have a day out on her own too.

At Lope's warning, Triphylla steels herself, first drinking an extract of Shield. "Already the haunts in this house gather against us." When Gunny gets out of the Commando and puts a pistol in Geigo's face, Lapeidra's eyes go wide. She's a bit jealous, to be honest. But while her attention is with Charly, she merely raises her Panther's arm cannon, pointing it at the pirate to assist with whatever threats her comrade is making. Her finger rests beside the trigger. You know, just in case.

Lapeidra pauses with Markus for a minute and responds first to Charly directly. "My father used to say, 'I'd rather be lucky then good.' You proved yourself today. These are just big hunks of welded metal with guns; any child could pilot one. What's important - and the thing they can't teach you at the academy, trust me - is that you can push aside all your fears and trudge this big dumb robot onto a battlefield knowing there's a good chance you'll die in it someday. Luck is more valuable than any training.

"As for the Confederation, I know what everyone knows, but nothing more. If you want to talk later on the ship I'm there for you."

Taking a moment to observe the situation with Gunny and Deigo, she flips her comm channel over to Markus: "I really don't like keeping deals with pirates. Sorry if that works against what we're trying to accomplish financially at the moment. I do wanna find those kids, and I don't need a contract for it. If pirate s~!~face here is conscripting regular mercs against their will to work for him by holding their families hostage we should know soon enough and decide what to do then."

Lapeidra imagines her Academy Commander Riley speaking to her with those authoritative tones. She hopes to have ten percent of Riley's panache. That girl could straight-up take charge and make any situation her own.

She waits for Gunny's interrogation to develop.

Lapeidra opens the comms wide to respond, "Lapeidra! It's three f#+~ing syllables!"

Then she dials in to Charly's personal channel. "You alright, girlfriend? You're looking a little frozen. If it's about Deigo, he makes me want to scream. Lapeidra huffs. Why do we want to let these guys live? For a Griffon? Who cares. Jack's gonna owe me if this works.

She opens the comm channel to the enemy mech. "Attention Pirate s!~%bag. Your life is forfeit. We've killed all your friends and in about thirty seconds you will experience the brief sensation of your skin boiling off before you are incinerated in a thermonuclear explosion. Now if it was up to me your fate would be sealed, but my teammates seem to think it's good business to let you live in exchange for your battlemech. I'll let you decide."

Spending a FATE point to invoke Lapeidra, Terminator

Oh man, I spent hundreds of hours in 1987 and '88 playing the original Might & Magic on my Commodore 64. There were days I spent more time in Sorpigal than I did outside in the actual real world. I never did beat that game. I'm tempted to enter a contemporary version of Crag the Hack or Wizz Bane. Looks like I still have time to put in a submission...

Surprised Atlas hasn't jumped in here yet.

I'd like to retcon one small detail; finally figured out what to do at this juncture.

On her way out of the Palace, Triphylla, in blonde human disguise, dons her stolen bird mask while passing through the servant's doors into the kitchen. She walks at a brisk pace, engaging with no one, and heads directly to the pantry. There, she takes two cabbages and a half dozen potatoes and fits them into a sack before proceeding with haste out the rear service door to the delivery courtyard en route to the stables.

When approaching, she takes special care to look out for stable boys and such who might spot her too soon.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

She does her best to avoid them and as quickly as possible enters the stall containing Titus' majestic mount, Richelieu. She closes the gate behind her with care.
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Anticipating agitation on the part of the horse, Triphylla produces the cabbages and potatoes and offers them in place of the stable feed.

"There, there, boy. Fill your belly. But do take it easy when you arrive at the jousting stadium later. These will cause an awful fuss in your gut, I'm afraid." starchy foods make horses uncomfortably gassy, so says the internet

@DM, the frog that attacked Kevan was prone from Rejke's trip, so would have been -4 to attack and would have missed, unless it wants to get up and we can each take a free hack at it first.

On the road, when she's not busy with her craft or allowing her eyes to drift long over the endless countryside, she considers certain aspects of the mission at hand.

"Julia, Lope, would you ever entertain loftier aspirations? Now that you have titles that only a few people in this wide world know are illegitimate, who's to say you should not rise to greater prominence?" She hints at nothing; it is merely the wonderings of a halfling.

"Hmm. The curtain parts before the cue. Ready or not..."

Triphylla steps out of the carriage wearing one of the courtier's outfits she purchased before leaving Oppara, this one in fine emerald and silver satin with gold piping. It brought out the green in her eyes and shimmered dully in the sun. A pair of polished leather boots with a tall heel made her look a little less unnoticeable among larger folk.

"Good day," she says in a strong voice while standing on the step of the carriage. "We are in procession to attend the Tanager Jubilee, with representatives of the Betony estate. I see you've all brought your wares for sale, and I happen to know that the Palace could use restocking of certain common items for staff use. If it pleases you all to aid in our passage, I'll buy the lot of what you have, and then perhaps you may share your concerns as well as those of your friends and countrymen, that we may begin to know the people in this fine land."

Triphylla will overpay by 50% and round up to the nearest silver piece for each and every merchant. I'm assuming the total for everything doesn't amount to much more than a handful of gold.
