Excellently written, very helpful book!

5/5

First thing to keep in mind about my review for this book is that the Pathfinder Gamemastery Guide is not a Rules book, so we must not judge it at such. Instead, it is a book of tips for GMs, new or experienced. As an experienced GM (or DM) myself, I was originally hesitant to buy this book. What could it contain that I don't already know? Eventually, I had some money burning a hole in my pocket and I noticed it at my local Borders. So I figured, what the heck, I already have all the other Paizo products... mine as well complete my collection.

Well, there is good and bad news. The good news is that it did include a lot of information that I didn't consider before. I also realized better ways to do things and solutions to problems I didn't even realize I had. The next session I GMed after buying this book ran a lot more smoothly. Not just for the players, but the normal stress level of GMing was down. Some nice tips! Also, I find the NPC Gallery at the end of the book EXTREMELY useful for not only giving a base to start ones own NPCs from, but providing stat blocks for those random NPCs that you didn't anticipate your players interacting with much. I will also mention that the book is VERY WELL WRITTEN. It's simply a masterpiece.

The bad news is that the book probably IS more tailored to new GMs. I would highly recommend this book if you intend to GM for the first time, and if you have this book, let new GMs borrow it since it is more useful to them.

But overall, worth your money!

Best "monster manual" I've ever bought

4/5

This is the most well-organized and beautifully illustrated "monster manual" I've ever bought. Everything about the book is amazing. The notes at the end for tips creating ones only monsters is also very useful to GMs wanting to create challenging, but fair monsters. The only complaint I have is that it stuck a bit too close to the 3.5 Monster Manual, so if you have that or like using the SRD, it may be considered a waste of money. Although the new stat blocks are a lot more useful than the poorly-organized 3.5 Monster Manual, so if that is worth $40 to you, go for it. I can't wait to see what Paizo has in store for the Bestiary 2.. maybe we'll see some original monsters in there (and some of the few Paizo left out).

Overall, well recommended for GMs!

Overall, solid book!

4/5

Since I received my shipment of this book, I have absolutely loved looking through all of the pages at all of the new options that open up to me. For the most part, all of it seems really balanced to the material in the Core Rulebook... and that was the design goal in which Paizo did an excellent job for the most part. It provides more options, giving you better options to make your fantasy character as you envision him. And that's what a roleplaying again is all about. In particular, I love the six new base classes and I think they will be a lot of fun to play. The new class variants all seem very cool, as well. In particular, I like the Arcane Duelist bard and the Antipaladin (As a DM, I already am planning to place one is as a recurring enemy in a campaign). The new spells and feats for the most part are well-designed. They aren't broken, have a lot of flavor, and are useful. There are a few troublesome or imbalanced or unclear rules in this book (take a look at the forums at the moment for specifics, the forums are full of rage over certain issues in the book) so I may want to wait for the second reprint if you haven't gotten it already. I kind of wish Paizo would've spent a bit more time with the proofreading since a lot of these mistakes and game weaknesses could've been caught before the book was released. But still, a great book. Well done, Paizo. As a person who usually doesn't like additional rule supplements past the Core Rules (I heavily disliked the 3.5 power creep and ridiculous amount of source books), you have really started to change my mind with the Advanced Players Guide. I hope to see similar things in the future from you.

The best Roleplaying system I've ever played

5/5

First of all, I've been a fan of 3.x D&D for a long time, since I was a kid. I've always loved this system, and I was really late jumping on the Pathfinder 'bandwagon'. But let me tell you that I'm glad I did. Pathfinder has brilliant re-envisions of the original rules, and it feels like a natural progression from 3.5. All of the rule changes I've encountered have been positive ones, and the game runs a lot smoother than my 3.5 games.

On to this book itself, it is absolutely beautiful. The style of the book is amazing. It has that awesome, old-fashioned feel. The artwork... divine! I can't remember ever being this happy with the artwork and style of a D&D book, ever. And of course, while a lot of the writing is a reprint of the 3.5 SRD, it is well written and organized compared to a lot of other printed books that I've used.

Defiantly worth 5 stars to me, and I would highly recommend that any fan of 3.x buys this product!
