The Amazing Urchin scrawls something and then shows it to Pava. “In case you can’t figure it out, let me hit you with a clue-by-four. The Good Doctor is PISSED.”

The Amazing Urchin turns to Foreigner and writes furiously. Did you hear THAT? The good doctor thinks they’re responsible for the death of a dragon when you guys did all the real work. Just blame it on the Hermean educational system. It’s not that great for developing critical thinking, if you know what I mean!

The urchin scribbles something.

IS your -1 a paladin? If not, it does not matter. There’s only one boon that goes across all for sheets, and you know it already if you have played parts a & b. Though it may be that you want the story... If so, go where the story is if you’ve committed to it.

Bad Cop time!

Engaging his golden dragon wings and biting with teeth of flame, the Amazing Urchin attacks!

It’s too bad that Urchin doesn’t know that fiends are usually immune to fire attacks. Oh well... He’ll learn someday.

The Amazing Urchin bares his teeth and holds up a sign. Ooh, are we gonna interrogate the guy? I want ‘Bad Cop!’ Then he looks over at Mishka, and scribbles a bit more. Though frankly Mishka or whatever his name is right now might be better at it than me. Still, maybe I can help him scare the crap outta snakeboy, here!

Urchin listens to the tale of Harskkeep, and then writes down his own summary.

It was Wealday in the Raging Badger Tavern. The bar was one of those places where the floor crunches underfoot, and once we got inside, it wasn’t hard to see why. There was the morosest bunch of dwarves — they looked so much alike they could have come out of Mengkare’s cloning vats — and they were all telling this glum story that went on and on about monsters and a dungeon and dead badgers.

There were other distractions too. Hallucinogenic herbs and some dude named Deep Tofu. However, as far as I can tell, there isn’t any loot in it, so I had to shake awake my teammates and prod them about the real mission.

Urchin throws some peanuts at his teammates and then holds up a sign.

Forget about the Dwarves and drugs. Let’s find that dame, Delara!

I’m fine with going in the morning.

It means that the people who made this Rod were likely dicks. ‘Want true power? Command my rod, baby!’ Urchin scribbles, and then shows to the Foreigner.

Knowledge Local: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6

It was late on Wealday — or early on an Oathday — I wasn’t looking at the clock. All I knew was that it was dark, and had we been back in Hermea, we’d have been back in bed. But lives and work in Hermea run on an orderly schedule that has been preset so that we can all be our best, and I’d been discovering that the outside world does not work like that.

People in taverns have a tendacy to talk until the wee hours with no regard for how late they stay up, or how early they have to work in the morning. They drink poisons that mess up their senses, and go back for seconds. They tell stories to each other that no one believes and they enjoy doing it. Most interesting is the randomness of their mating patterns — there’s no dragon setting the right genetic crosses, or helping the right people get together. They’re just doing it blindly, and often through a veneer of booze, and they expect it all to go right.

I’d say something sarcastic about it, but I find that I can’t. There’s something almost awe-inspiring about the way how these people just leap blindly into things. Is it stupid? Sometimes. Is it brave? Yeah, I think it is. Still... The more I watch them, the more I become convinced of the fact of divine intervention just keeping all these idiots alive and functioning.

Speaking of that... We’ve got another mission, one that’s making our leafy companions nervous. Still, the chitterwood sounds dark and interesting, and there’ll be trees to climb, and doubtless more interesting non-Hermean interactions to process...

Yo, we’re still in combat. Both are stable, because Jaym stabilized on his own, and Wertlos stabilized the other. Apparently Tavetti is still up. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be looking for an escape route. But he has to get past the Good Doctor’s Ranseur first.

Note to GM Burnsville: it’s helpful to include the combat tracker in most of your GM posts to avoid confusion of who’s up and who’s down in PBP.

Urchin, a fair wordsmith himself, enjoys Tavetti’s song. Hey, that’s catchy! He dances a bit to it until he notices that the good doctor is standing slack-jawed.

He opens his sharp teeth and attempts to bite her to snap her out of it!

Friday morning. Why is it that Friday mornings always dawn brighter than other mornings? Still, it’s a test of the tyrrany of time. All those people watching the clock, willing it to go faster...

Speaking of the Tyranny of Time, this is your heads up that I’m going to have to start prepping this scenario for PaizoCon. The Special has not dropped for me, so I have to start breaking this one down now so that when the Special finally drops I can devote all my prep time to it.

I’ll have knowledge of the scenario from this point forward. Sorry!

@GM Worg: Mishka & Rhymin Ralph should be up too, because Blocked Initiative wraps so long as there are no opponents in between the player characters. Jaym is unconscious, so still up are Zepherine, Mishka and Ralph.

Wrapping the initative block will be key to keeping combat in PBP Specials flowing at a decent pace.

The monkey uses the Pathfinder Call Sign for thank you, extending hand from lips like he were blowing a kiss. Then he scribbles again, Between the dank furnishings, and rotted floors, the place smelled of ruin. Ruined hopes. Ruined dreams, Ruined present, past and future for those who once called this place home.

He writes happily, and then shows his pages to Rhymin’ Ralph, hoping that the wordsmith would like his prose.

There we were, writing up an evaluation of a new GM... This Worg guy really knew how to set a scene, but even he could use a pointer or two from the Amazing Urchin.

★ ---- ★ ---- ★ ---- ★

Okay here are some of the things that I’ve noticed.

  • Providing ‘eye space’ in PBPs is important. Separate paragraphs with blank lines to make them more readable.

  • If your players feed you an odd detail, play with it. Improvise upon it if you can... Make them feel like you’re sharing a fun game, and let them know that you’re appreciating the extra trouches they’re adding to enliven the game.

  • It’s also fairly common to spoiler skill checks in PBPs. Why? It keeps things moving, and gives the players a chance to respond to the others with what they’ve learned. You have a fast party of players here, so we’ve been moving fairly quickly anyway, but it’s a good habit to get into.

Note, there are exceptions to this... At least one time I decided for dramatic reasons to not make an advance spoiler, and instead rolled Sense Motive for the party members. Then when one of the party members (Dunia) made the Sense Motive Check against an amazing liar, I spoilered the information she found jus for her. I did that to preserve surprise for the players.

  • In the case of dungeon crawls in PBP, it’s pretty common for GMs to roll perception for all the party members as they enter each room, and then tell the folks who noticed soemthing what they noticed. Once again, this is done to keep searching from slowing down to a crawl in PBP.

So there we were, in the crumbling old ruin. You’d never see a dump like this back in Hermea. Mengkare likes to keep things safe and tidy. Still, we were far from home, and we had a job to do.

Given the smell of mulch and mildew, I thought that free-roaming foliage would be right at home, but they were nervous too. Between the dank furnishings, and rotted floors, the place smelled of...

On Dr. Splash’s shoulder, the Amazing Urchin takes out his pen as he surveys the Wounded Wisp and scribbles.

It was three o’clock on a Friday, and Dr. Splash and I decided to keep our appointment at the Wounded Wisp. It was a classier joint than the Pig’s Paunch, but that’s not hard. The crowd was a fairly typical mix of adventurers, low-lifes and scum. Not a dragon in sight. However, I noticed right away that the place took some pride in its decorative plants, which were chatting merrily with some of the clientele.

It’s a good thing that I’m here with Dr. Splash. The good doctor’s still wet behind the ears when it comes to life in the rough tumble world that lies beyond Hermea, but I’m here to watch and report. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even find some worthy recruits to bring back to Hermea. Stranger things have happened.
