In my experience this is not the case. There are more than enough problems with the rules and the rulebook themselves that sour the experience long before the rubber hits the road.

I have dozens of issues with many of the rules and systems in the game, but a big one for me a far more nebulous. I love reading an RPG rulebook and having my imagination set start effervescing with possibility as I read. I know this is a playtest and not final but it is like reading a textbook or the service manual for a surplus Soviet diesel engine. Instead of firing the imagination it is a boring, tedious slog. Rather than feeling like I am learning the system that will let me experience wondrous adventures I feel like I am studying for an exam.
Themetricsystem wrote:I really think lots of folks are taking away bad impressions of the system based off the PT rules because the Test requires that DD be essentially a standardized test with little/no room for creative problem solving or even balanced encounters.

RAW or no, any gunslinger even remotely decently built can deal some serious damage without needing to double-up on the bonus.

To be fair, however, while I have indeed absolutely decimated what should have been difficult encounters I have also spent entire scenarios missing easy shots and breaking guns. The gunslinger has a very spiky and unreliable damage track and dice can be jerks.

To everyone saying "we know it's wrong": respectfully, no you don't. You suspect it is wrong and you are likely correct. I too suspect it is wrong and I was, admittedly, taking advantage of that when I built the character. Were I to start now from scratch I'd build her very differently.

Also, regarding applying more than one archetype to a character, the rules are pretty unambiguous.
By all rules of pronunciation - and logic - of which I am aware "scar-knee" just doesn't work. As it is meant to be a transcription of a foreign word there is no point for the "z" to be there unless it is relevant to the pronounciation. Otherwise it is not so much silent as it is decorative, like bad fantasy names full of extraneous hyphens and apostrophes. A writer can't just throw these things in because they look pretty, they have to actually mean something.

The problem with claiming the "z" is silent is that English has but one word with a technically-silent "z" - rendezvous - and it is borrowed from French. Even here the "z" affects pronunciation by producing the long "a" sound when paired with the preceding "e".

That said, there is an established English rule that a "c" following an "s" at the beginning of a word is silent (eg. science, scissors, scent, scintilla). This normally applies when the "c" is followed by an "e" or "i" so we can't draw any conclusive proof from it.

So while I'm not claiming to be objectively correct, "scar-nee" just doesn't make any sense at all and "zar-nee" (like the word "czar" with the elongated silibant "z") seems to best fit the word as written. All just IMO.
