I find it's a tricky row to hoe in enforcing/interpreting the RAW on how animal companions function vs. a player's assumptions. More often than not animal companions are treated as extensions of the controlling PC, acting with pinpoint precision and always following orders perfectly despite having minimal intelligence and being distinct beings. Rather than being a companion they become effectively a second PC under the player's complete control.

I'm disallowing stuff like the ordering the PC moving into position, readying and action, ordering the companion to flank, and then both of them attacking with because that sort of complex maneuvering is clearly outside the parameters of the RAW, but where does the line get drawn?

An example that came up in my last session. The PCs were faced with an otyugh. It was in a small room connected to a larger one by a narrow corridor in which there were two PCs and no room to pass by them. The PC with a animal companion ordered it to attack the otyugh. In order to do so it would need to go down the corridor, risk taking an AoA, and then have to make and acrobatics check to move through the otyugh to get to the other side of it. I ruled it was too difficult for the animal companion to do, the player argued it's the only way for the companion to fulfill the order to attack and so should do so.

I don't want to completely gut the efficacy of the animal companion but at the same time I don't want to simply hand wave it away and effectively give the player two PCs. This situation will be exacerbated when the PC is allowed to increase the companion's INT to 3, at which point it can understand language and spoken commands.

All advice is welcome.
I'm looking for advice on how my fellow GMs handle PCs with animal companions.

I have dozens of issues with many of the rules and systems in the game, but a big one for me a far more nebulous.
Topic the first: A huge pet peeve of mine has always been spells and abilities that remove a player from playing the game–paralysis, fear, etc. This is especially true of 3e/OGL-based systems (of which Pathfinder is one) where combat takes a long time. Anything that take a player out of playing the game for an hour or more, especially in a PFS scenario with an assumed three-to-four hour time slot, is not a good thing.

Topic the second: Many times I've run up against scenarios where and enemy does not represent a substantial threat to a party of even moderately capable adventurers but Said enemy is given a passel of abilities–DR and concealment are common ones–that do nothing to increase the challenge of the encounter but rather to artificially increase the length, often frustrating or boring players whose PC's lack the necessary skill/feat/McGuffin to overcome or bypass the speed bump.

I am curious as to your thoughts on these points.

Cheers.
James, I've two topics.

My Oracle used Telekinesis to grapple a flying creature, but none of us could really suss out exactly how that should play out. Does it stop dead in mid air or does it plummet to the ground? What about on the subsequent pin?

We played it as the former, that it was held in place by the power of spell, and then was effectively pinned to the sky, but I'm curious if anyone has better insight on how this is supposed to play out by RAW.

Also, while I'm at it, what is the effective CMD of a telekinetic grapple for the grappled enemy to try to break? The spell only lists the CMB. We ruled it as the spell's CMB+10.
Interesting rules question came up last night in our game.

I'll not delve too deeply into that debate, suffice to say I can see both sides of that argument.
I think the gunslinger reputation suffers because of a certain bias and because people remember the big-hits - the time you drop a dragon in a single round with a wall of lead - but not the numerous misfires, crap range, or the 5+ levels you spent dinking out base die damage. I've seen other classes dole out the same damage as a gunslinger, and far more reliably too, but without the same "flash".
What isn't disputed? ;)

If using a double-barreled pistol I cannot recommend strongly enough investing in the reliable enhancement. It can be a real lifesaver.

Once you have gun training and iterative attacks and are thus no longer relegated to dribbling out a single straight-die damage attack each round it can be a very useful strategy to mitigate the danger of misfires by restricting yourself to using just a single barrel. It may seem counter-intuitive but I've had three (yes, THREE!) guns blow on me in a single PFS session, and of course it can be very useful to keep something uncommon like (adamantine, ghost salt, etc.) loaded in the second pipe for "special occasions".

It's theoretically possible to give that team (as well as other upstanding, more behind-the-scenes folks like the art department) enough credit, but from a practical standpoint, it's difficult to tell them "thank you" often enough. I'm certain that by the time GMs receive the file, it will be as clear and exceptional a read for the GMs as it will be a flashy and exciting experience for the players.

Agreed. One cannot thank skilled editors or proofreaders enough.

There is a saying that most creatives know all too well: fools and children should never see a job half-done. I cannot count the number of times I've had to patiently explain to the someone - often for the sixth or seventh time - that a block of text or an image was only a placeholder.

I think this is going to be a truly spectacular scenario when it's done. Every encounter fires my imagination and I cannot wait to run it.
John Compton wrote:Sulaco wrote: Tim Statler wrote: I've been reading my test copy, (since I'm running it), and found a typo(?) that is causing me confusion:

1. Why are you a Pathfinder?

It offered the best opportunity to get what a I needed: skills, training, and a chance to travel the world and seek my father's killers.

2. Do you have a name and surname that is not ripped straight out of existing Earth mythology or popular culture?

My dad was a gunsmith, thus the "Smith" half of my name. "Wesson" is the Common approximation of my mother's elven name.

Some people think it's funny for some reason, though I can't imagine why.

3. Which nation did you grow up in? How did this nation influence you?

Andoran. I value freedom, personal or systemic, and despise slavers and those who think they own slaves.

I also cannot abide murderers. I've killed many men in a fair-fight, but murder is different. Murder is the ultimate imposition over someone's freedom. It is an abomination.

4. What do you look like? What are your wearing? How does this vary when you’re stalking through forests, sewers, deserts or in glittering cities?

I've got my mother's hair - fire red - and her pale elven complexion. My eyes are blue, like winter ice. I think I get the smattering of freckles across my nose and cheeks from my dad.

In the field I dress in a mithral chain shirt, a motley collection of patched and worn travel clothes, a road-dusty leather coat, and an Andoren tricorn hat decorated with many trophies and trinkets from my travels.

The only difference between the field and the city is how clean my gear is. I dress as I wish, not to appease someone else's sense of style or decorum.

5. What do you love? (Treasure and experience doesn’t count)

I love my dad, but he's dead. It's the reason I joined the society, to gain the training and skills needed to track down his killers.

I love my mother, but we never really got along. After dad died there wasn't much reason to stay, so I didn't.

I love my "sister from another mister", Yara. We've grew up together. Our fathers were both on the same caravan and taken in by the elves at the same time. She's always looked out for my soul and I try to keep her body in one piece. Personally, I think I got the easier part of the deal.

6. What do you hate? (Unclear and irritating darkness level rules don’t count)

Slavers and those who infringe upon the freedom of others. we all must walk a path of our own choosing.

I can't stand laws and rules. They're little more than codified ways to control others.

7. Which other Pathfinders (PCs) do you rely on for teamwork, survival and butt-kicking? Do you have a bro? a mentor? a father figure? maybe a rival?

Yara, of course. She's the one who inspired me to join the society and has had my back more times than I can count.

In general, if I can't rely on a Pathfinder I won't work with them. Every single person I've worked with is someone I'd risk my life for, even the few who I suspect wouldn't return the sentiment.

8. How does your race influence your views? Are you a stereotype of a certain race? How are you different from most humans/elves/gnomes/orcs/tengu?

I've never really felt "elven", if that makes in sense. Even though I look a lot like my mother - pale skin, read hair, pointed ears - I always felt more human, like my dad. I always wished I had his dark skin and golden eyes.

I hate the idea that one race is "better" than another.

9. What are you afraid of? Do you have any phobias or worries?

I have no problem being by myself, but the thought of being alone, as in there being no one else in the world who cares for me or misses me when I'm not there, terrifies me.

10. What is your most treasured possession?

My gun. Well, my first gun. It's old, battered, and not particularly well-made, but it's the one I built with my dad before he died. I think he was always disappointed I didn't show much interest in following in his footsteps as a gunsmith. I was always more interested in shooting guns than making them.

I always thought dad scrapped it, but he had it with him when he was killed. One of the men who murdered him took it. I took it back and shot the bastard with it. My first kill. I won't rest till I've found out every last member of the gang and killed them all.
Sir Illia Smith-Wesson, Gunslinger and Knight Captain of the Silver Falcons of Andoran
