The Gameplay thread is confusing me a little. (Maybe because I seem to be the only fool who hasn't already read the scenario?) ;-)

Seems like the party knows there's one more fight, against a 'Shazzamian', and we may or may not have time to complete that encounter. Votes so far seem to indicate a consensus to quit this fight to give us more time to fight the next encounter? (Any or all these assumptions might be incorrect on my part.)

I'm cool with whatever you guys want to do. I'll trust your more informed judgment.

Saving finale, if Slim or anyone else fails a saving throw:
Slim will cease his performance and cast saving finale as an immediate action. If Slim makes his save, he will do the same thing for anyone else failing a saving throw. He has Lingering Performance, so the effects of his bardic performance will continue for two more rounds.

Slim lets the team know what he knows about the Sibilant Twins and the frog demon. "The maraliths constrict with crushing coils (save vs. unconscious), all their weapons count as magic, chaotic, and evil, and they take no penalties for multiweapon fighting. The hezrou demon is a disgusting bugger; grappling one can make you nauseous."

He taps the heels of his boots of speed and calls out to his goddess once more. (Oath of Vengeance: expended two lay on hands for an additional smite) "Eternal Rose, let's send these fiends back to the Abyss!" He points to the blue maralith, focusing his divine vengeance on her first.

Then he step a little closer to the action and begins a staccato rap, inspiring his colleagues and their summoned creatures with his discordant voice.

As Slim witnesses the carnage being wrought by the Sibilant Twins and their minion, he shouts a warning to the rest of the team. "The frog demon is a hezrou. Quite intelligent, but they prefer the simple pleasures—slumber, the thrill of torture, the bliss of feasting on a living meal, or the joy of feeling something beautiful breaking and crumbling in a clenched fist. This one appears to be quite subservient."

His study of the Sibilant Twins is more deliberate, accessing every bit of lore at his trained bard's disposal.

Yeah, I've no sense of the time between encounters, except the guidance we got that only buffs of at least 10 min/level duration were permissible out-of-combat.

Some Specials specify the sometimes randomly-generated-by-dice-rolls time between encounters. Perhaps this one uses a different method?

Then Slim's jaw drops, when the tall blue man appears. The half-elf greets Grandmaster TOZ, "Yo, Blue Man. Gotta say, I'm a big fan of your shows. Your group's performance art was a huge hit in Pitax. Knew a guy, who knew a guy, and I got a pair of front row seats for a friend and me."

When some Iomedeans also show up and join the party, Slim whistles. "Sheesh. Looks like Sister Ayako had lots of friends in high places."

"It's like a Worldwound Woodstock festival." The paladin-bard winks at Candi. "Got some peyote tabs on you?"

GM, could you provide us with a visual description of the creature(s), (in addition to the image on the map) we face at the start of future encounters? Even if we fail to identify it/them with a Knowledge check, it helps immerse the PCs in the moment and react based at least on what their senses tell them, especially about their visible gear and the likely reach of their weapons, etc. Just basic stuff, nothing the PCs wouldn't be aware of.

(I'd rather not meta-game, if I can avoid it.)

Just hoping Slim was actually beyond the creature's reach initially or, being aware he wasn't based on what he'd already observed the demon do, be permitted the Cast Defensively option. Rather lose the spell than his life.

So glad we went with this encounter instead of wasting time on the Sibilant Twins. ;-)

Can you help me understand the AoO against Slim? Was the balor's reach greater than 20ft when Slim cast the good hope spell in his original position, before he made Ayako's bard's escape move (and ended up on the rock next to the balor)? Slim though he was safe, some 25ft+ away from the demon.

Slim would have certainly cast defensively, if he'd been aware he was within reach of the balor,based either on his earlier knowledge check or seeing it in action against his allies. Not this paladin-bard's first rodeo. Happy to roll that, if you want.

To be affected, an enemy must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the bard’s performance. The effect persists for as long as the enemy is within 30 feet and the bard continues the performance. The performance cannot cause a creature to become frightened or panicked, even if the targets are already shaken from another effect. Dirge of doom is a mind-affecting fear effect, and it relies on audible and visual components.

The half-elf looks around the team, "If it's cool with y'all, I'll hang onto a potion of cure serious wounds, and a potion of enlarge person."

He jabs his wand of cure light wounds into his left glute and activates it. He loads it back into his spring-loaded wrist sheath, and sets off with his companions, destination: Thurl's Lodge.

Obsidean, no apologies necessary. I wouldn't worry too much about being overpowered in combat. That's what you built your character to do, and I'm happy to see Obsidean have his moments of glory. Fortunately for other types of players, that's not the only feature of the game.

I've built a few combat monsters, but I get bored too easy when playing them, just going on mental snooze until the GM calls for Initiative rolls. I'd rather be engaged as a face or skill monkey in between the usual three-per-scenario combat encounters.

I think it's all about player/GM preferences. The best scenarios offer something for all types.
