Honestly, at this point a map cutout of the location might work decently well.

You have been collecting rumors and clues about Hjort, Runa, and Skagni.
What you have found is listed below.

Hjort Fastaxe came from a coastal village. “I heard about an Ulfen warrior named Hjort—don’t know his family name—who came here a while back after his entire village was slaughtered on the Arcadian coast. People say his rage toward the Pathfinder Society burns bright, as they were the ones who slaughtered his people—a people, I heard, that he was destined to be the jarl of. Those traditional warriors from the coast are serious brutes—I wouldn’t want to be one of their targets.”

Someone named Runa White has been seen in the markets. “A dark-haired Chelish woman, family name of White, has been seen about the market recently. She’s hiring mercenaries and low-life thugs for Gorum-knowswhat. If you’re looking for her to right some wrong, I’d
bring a dozen more of you—she was cornered in one of the market’s darkest corners by some of Trollheim’s biggest miscreants, and just when they thought they had gotten the drop on her, she called to her god and blasted them with holy fire. She’s tough, that one, and not someone I’d
mess with.”

Hjort Fastaxe and Runa White have been seen together hiring mercenaries. “Yeah, I know those two. They approached my friends and me and offered us a ridiculous sum to work for them. No way was I going to work for a
washed-up Ulfen warrior and a foreign she-devil from the south. Hjort’s eyes told all the story I needed to know: he wasn’t doing whatever he was doing for profit—he was doing it for revenge. That business has only one path, and it leads straight to Pharasma’s ample bosom. And Runa?
Well, she’s a foreigner, ain’t she?”

Hjort and Runa operate out of a shady tavern in the market. “Can’t say as I remember the name of the place, but when they tried to hire my cousin, they told him to meet them at some hole in the market. You’d best do your poking around there and stop pestering the peaceful folk of Trollheim before they decide to yank your entrails out from your mouth and strangle you with them.”

Hjort and Runa live in rooms at the Horned Helm in the northern part of the market. “Hjort and Runa, you say? Yeah, I know ‘em. I drink a beer and punch a guy in the face every night down at the Horned Helm, and they’ve been there for weeks—months maybe. I tell ya, that Hjort can throw a punch, and don’t get Runa started about religion—she’s likely to talk about it long enough it starts a fight and the way she ends fights ain’t fair, ain’t right, and just ain’t normal. Runa is a dark-haired woman from Cheliax, and Hjort is a large brute with red hair, a red beard, and a scar across his left cheek.”

I am going to address one thing here... secret rolls...

It has already been stated that this technically is nothing new. What is new are the critical failure tidbits of information that are now in the scenarios. I honestly think these are quite cool, and reason enough to do them. For a bunch of stuff, it should be easy to figure out what you can say for critical failures.

At Gen Con, I had a few on-the-fly ad libs I needed to do. I had the PCs misidentify a creature on two occasions. Both times I gave them some basic information on a much more powerful creature of the same general type, along with a flaw of the creature.

The players never balked at that, and played right along!

Two other times I had potions misidentified. On one case I told Fumbus it wa a potion of invisibility. When he decided to use it, the character was jumping around saying “I’m invisible!”, causing Valeros to wonder if he had learned to see invisible.

The other was identified as a “potion of shrinking”. The eventually decided it was a shrink wounds potion, which was funny.

All of these were great Roleplaying opportunities that few tables would have experienced without the secret rolls.

As an FYI, I was doing it like Gary, roll all the checks, then hand out the information. Seemed to work really well. I was managing it without a screen, even (‘cause I haven’t gotten mine yet)

Finally, if you don’t think you can handle it on the fly, just make a note of what. Failed check will give as you do your prep. Probably what I will be doing as I get better at 2E

"Walk? Ride a camel? That seems so barbaric!" spouts Ethan. "I'd prefer flying... or a carriage... but I don't think that will be possible. And what sort of Venture-Captain wouldn't provide their team with mounts? This is preposterous!"

He then tells the team his plan. "I am not going to use any mundane, smelly beast to carry my esteemed personage around. I will use magic to do this far better. In fact, if a few of you wish, I will allow you to ride with me. With my magical prowess, this chariot will be able travel over the sandy deserts as easy as a paved road, which should increase our speed over mere camels.

"Gavin, I assume you know how to handle a team?"

"Oh, and I alwyas make sure to have the tiny hut spell memorized. No need for me to sleep out under the stars like barbarians. I suppose I could share it with you lot as well."

With a sneer he looks at Gavin as if to say, 'This is why you need a wizard.'

As at his level it has a speed of 80', it can make 64 miles a day

Ethan will purchase the phantom chariot spell. He will take the time to scribe it into his spellbook, and then use his arcane bond to cast it for today.

If the GM permits, and the players agree, this would supplant the need to purchase mounts. This costs Ethan 240gp... and he is going to do it regardless.

Ethan's Purchases:

Scribe Phantom Chariot: 160+80=240gp
Trail Rations for 20 days: 10gp
2 barrels (for water): 4gp
TOTAL: 254gp

this is on top of the 5 alchemist's fire he purchases, which he plans to use as alchemical power components, if needed.

After the crowds calm down, and the Starfinders make their way off of the stage, they are ambushed by a squealing Zigvigix! 'It was so cool seeing all of you up there! The costumes were amazing, and the way your fight was worked into the music. I wish I could have been up there with you!'

Historia-7 is less demonstrative, but obviously glad for Zigvigix. She does seem concerned about the plot that you discovered, and plans to interrogate Lanzio once she has the time.

A conveyor robot approaches you shortly after the concert. The robot relays a brief message about how the band members wish they could converse with you in person but that their schedule requires them to leave right away. It carries a small chest of Strawberry Machine Cake paraphernalia that the band wants to gift to you all to convey its parting and heartfelt thanks. The stash contains a set of elite stationwear armor (emblazoned with a massive strawberry), a glamered fusion seal (7th), four screamer grenades I, and a thunderstrike sonic rifle made to resemble Bone’s koto.

The silence of space lies in stark contrast to the clamor of the concert, and the starry void outside of the starship’s viewscreens is even more striking when compared to the brightpink lights of the quickly vanishing Songbird Station. Historia-7 seems relieved by the respite from the noise and chaos, using the quiet to concentrate on streams of information on her computer.

Even Zigvigix seems happy to be away from the crowd. “Today has been a productive day for you, hasn’t it!”[b] the shirren says, still hopelessly excited by recent events, despite their clear exhaustion. [b]“Uncovering conspiracies, fighting alien technology, and saving Songbird Station. I’m not sure how either you or the band are going to be able to top that next time! But I have faith that you can do it. Good luck!

[b]“You know...” Zigvigix continues, their psychic voice turning soft. “I haven’t felt this way in a long time.” The shirren stands to return to the piloting console, turning only for a moment to add, “Hey, Historia-7, get some rest,” before they depart.

The next day, Chip is distraught to discover that his 7th arm has disappeared over night!

While Kane is not nearly as stealthy as he would wish to be, perhaps because on this lighted stage there aren't any shadows to hide in! However, he does land a shot, just barely dropping the holographic mecha!

The mecha collapses into individual metal plates and then dissolves into pink dust that artfully blows away. The music suddenly stops, and the lights on the stage go dark. Just as the crowd begins to murmur among
themselves, the lights reappear on the stage—in the form of life-sized holograms depicting Zigvigix’s missing friends. The band suddenly starts up a never-before heard song, in a surprise memorial that Strawberry Machine Cake managed to create 10 minutes before the concert.

“Hello, everyone!” CAPTAIN✶CARMINE’s voice calls out, prompting a deafening roar from the crowd. “Hello, Songbird Station! Hello, everyone watching! We love all of you!”

“Today, we found out we had some fans who didn’t make it here because of a tragedy,” the lead singer continues, causing the audience to quiet down. “These brave Starfinders were lost in the Scoured Stars system a few months ago. Their friend brought their holograms here so they could still be with us today. So, I want you to get ready to cheer for them! Cheer so loudly that they can hear us, even out in the Scoured Stars! Let’s let them know we love them!” At that, the crowd erupts into an even more deafening roar, with people from every corner of the Pact Worlds, the Veskarium, and beyond yelling at the top of their voices.

“That’s right!” CAPTAIN✶CARMINE cuts through the screaming cheers. “Everyone, get ready to cheer one more time! Because not only are the missing Starfinders with us here in spirit, their friends are here with us in the flesh as well, and they just saved our concert and Songbird Station! Everyone, give it up for the Starfinder Society!”

At CAPTAIN✶CARMINE’s exclamation, the stage spotlights come back on, and the spot light is aimed at Mustachio. Tsuchi-ko calls out, "Starfinder Mustachio Marino!!!"

Mustachio has a chance for a personal shout-out in front of the
live attendees, as well as the untold thousands of people who will watch the eventual rebroadcasts of the show.

I have gotten used to the charts that came in with the specials. I find them easy to use, since worst case I can just print out the chart.

However, I do think that they have the risk that standardized DCs will allow players to meta game their rolls a little.

I also like the scaling, it was helpful in this scenario. Plus, I always like make a DC of x for a certain level of success, make x+5 (or whatever) for better success.

Ok, I am going to find out if the clues given will cause the players to run.

Gameplay Thread in my PBPp

I have a bad feeling that this team will engage, and I am trying to give a heavy hand, without taking away from player agency.

If you have run this, or at least read, please let me know if there is anything else that I could do.

I will let you all know how it goes (though in the next day you'll be able to see for yourself!)

Please understand that I am definitely not unhappy with my schedule. Far from it. Just a little surprised after last year getting a full schedule of Starfinder and no playtest, and this year going all in on 2E.

It's all good!

You feel the pain of the “Holy Mama” when you ask such a question.
If you must despoil such a beautiful creature, you remove the taint of the Everflame from it.

And you saw his reaction to that, right?

But, that would, mechanically, require a diplomacy check to make the “official” request.
