We could learn allot from various game developers from around the world. But no anime in the graphics! Anime might have good stories but the artwork is garbage. I want my human to have a normal nose and normal sized eyes. Oh, and hair that looks like hair.

No arguments her :) Stat blocks for ease of play, I'm using HeroLab, you can use which ever. Use which point system, or pick yer own, etc. Any level, etc. Doing them up for Golarion :)

You can use Generic, homebrew etc. as long as it's Pathfinder on this one and again lets not argue about stats or levels or whatever. Friendly is fine, it's for fun and learning and we can use them :)

I watched Rudyard Kipling's story Kim (made into a movie) about England vs Russia during the 2nd Afgan war in the 1800's. The Brits get this boy who is the son of a British soldier and an Indian woman. He speaks Punjabi and English and they teach him to be a spy. They go into great deal in teaching him perception. In this case in the movie they put things on a table - coins, marbles, pebbles etc. he looks at them for a few seconds and they cover them over with a blanket and he has to tell them what was on the table. Then they take off the cloth and see if he was right. They keep doing this and keep changing whats on the table. Sometimes they sneak objects off too. Listening can be taught as well- also touch (Braille) taste/smell- wine tasting etc. Its all skill. Also watching for little changes in facial muscle movements to tell the emotions of people and also see if they are lying. The show Lie to Me is based off of a real scientist.

"Boggart" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1863

In British folklore, a boggart (or bogart, bogan, bogle or boggle) is a household spirit/faerie which causes things to disappear, milk to sour, and dogs to go lame. Always malevolent, the boggart will follow its family wherever they flee. In Northern England, at least, there was the belief that the boggart should never be named, for when the boggart was given a name, it would not be reasoned with or persuaded and become uncontrollable and destructive.

It is said that the boggart crawls into people's beds at night and puts a clammy hand on their faces. Sometimes he strips the bedsheets off them. Sometimes a boggart will also pull on a person's ears. Hanging a horseshoe on the door of a house is said to keep a boggart away.

In the folklore of North-West England, boggarts live under bridges on dangerous sharp bends on roads, and it is considered bad luck for drivers not to offer their polite greetings as they cross.

Envision a land where the magic’s of technology and alchemy hold sway, where intrepid explorers fly dirigibles into the unknown, and mad inventors use alchemy to make crystal powered clockwork golems to be companions on their mad quests. A realm were great steam powered engines pull great trains along iron tracks between vast destinations. This is a land of wonder and beauty where all the modern conveniences can be had for those who have the money. Mostly medieval technology mixed with Victorian advancements. Where Humans invented Mechanical Men to help with their wars on the Minotaurs and Gnolls of the Far North.

Come explore great cities with great clock towers, crystal or gas lit avenues, gearwork elevators, and blown glass windows, where people wear wire rimed glasses and top hats. Or travel the “Underground” a vast subway network of steam powered railcars that take the passengers from one place to another through underground tunnels. Stay in fancy hotels and dine on the finest foods, or take in the opera. Hobnob with the elite- have dinner with President Elect.

Or travel great railways through vast areas of open country through towns, hamlets and farms that are more familiar as they are not quite so advanced as the modern city. Here some remote farmers say they have encountered faerie folk or “wee ones” from time to time.

Join an expedition to the far north on an Airship, where arctic Gnolls and arctic Minotaurs hunt and talking animals hold court, to map the stars and take reconnaissance of that vast trackless wilderness to see if the beastmen are amassing for war on the civilized humans of the south.

Check out the undercity realms of the Morlock Tunnels where many strange creatures dwell deep beneath the city streets such as Derro, Goblins, and Morlocks, and try to come out alive. Or visit the mines where Goblin slaves mine for ore for their human masters.

Strap on an Ectometer and search out ghosts and other undead on their terms in the name of science.

Use science and strange devices to open doorways into the unknown and encounter things better left unknown.

Stop an impending political war between the President Elect’s Secret Police, the Guildmasters of the Cogs and the Alchemists League.

People are prudish. Crime this, punish that. In Germany and Denmark I go into a pool changing room and there is only one changing room. Men, women, children of all ages are in there changing. We go to a lake, and people take their cloths off and go swimming. You see people naked all the time. Klinton gets a BJ at the same time in Paris a statesman dies and his wife and his mistress are at the funeral standing side by side hand in hand mourning their loss. Everybody knows about his relationship with both women, including both women. Nobody minds. You look through a family album and there a lots of pictures of people nude of any age. Kids too. Is that wrong. No. But in America it's porn. You ask for pics in Germany and they wold give you some. Here you pay.

Who cares about 5e! Pathfinder was created because 4e was created. We were playing 3.5 and wizards of the coast stopped printing their 3.5 things and stopped producing their 3.5 line cold. They decided to make 4e which alienated all the people who didn't want to switch to a new game altogether. Ie. we either stopped playing Dungeons and Dragons and start playing 4e or do both. And either way that was expensive. So we sat on piles of books we bought and were obsolete and liked and we could buy lots of new that we were forced to or not. They Paizo came out with 3.5 modules and we were happy. Then they upgraded the works a bit to 3.75 and it worked. And we were happy. They are doing a great job. And wizards of the coast are sticking it to the people again. They trashed Star Wars game, and they thumbed it to the old school D&Ders and now they are upgrading soon after... I keep my 3.5, my 2nd Edition, my 1st Edition and my Pathfinder Edition. And wotc can 45$6 themselves...

Foils are light, but they are practice weapons, not really weapons. Katanas are not Rapiers, nor are they fencing weapons, they are however in the fencing category for light weapons. Rapiers and Katanas are fairly heavy, but compared to say a Viking sword, or an English sword it is quite light. Kendo is not the same as western fencing, not by a long shot. No. It is a two handed style using a wooden weapon. Using the Katana you usually use one handed and it is much heavier, and you usually use the Boken, the practice wooden weapon for that before you use the steel variety.

Katana is a slicing weapon, not a chopping weapon. You do a bit of a chop to connect, then you pull along to slice through. A good example is the old Highlander TV show. I am not using this as a basis for my knowledge but a place for people to use as a visual. Adrian Paul (Duncan McLeod The Highlander) would use the Katana to swing at the mans head, it would connect with the neck, and then he would slide the blade back towards him, cutting through the neck, taking the head off. The blade would not go through the neck on first swing, but on the subsequent slice. The Scimitar is more of a Chopper/Slicer- the wide bladed Tulwar is a Chopper... Hassan Chop! - Bugs Bunny ;)

I have been fencing for 21 years with rapier, and 12 years Kendo and Iaido, as well as with various Katana fighting styles. Also medieval swords, axes, and even scimitars etc. They (Katanas) are from experience much lighter one handed than medieval western swords and are also much easier wielded one handed than 2 handed. They also by the way can be used in place of a Rapier for Rapier style fencing quite easily I find. And yes the Scimitar is also a fencing weapon; and also faster than the Rapier or Katana. Fencing is all about the cut, thrust, the speed, lightness, thickness, weight etc, and about the lightness of the blade as compared to other blades. It is a category. Scimitars are also quite easy to use one in each hand comparability just as a side note.

Sure a foil is light and is a fencing weapon. It is not the same as a Scimitar. E.G. a Scimitar would be a heavy fencing weapon verses a foil as a light fencing weapon, all in the lighter sword category.

Like a Longsword vs a Bastard Sword. Both are heavy weapons. But a Bastard Sword can be considered a two handed heavy weapon category sword. Or a one-hander depending on its use.

A claymour is considered a two handed heavy weapon category sword.

An English longsword is in the light category of heavy weapons. A one-hander.

When you get used to the weight and the swing in practice and your arm gets strong with use all of a sudden you realize what becomes a fencer by shape, weight, and thickness, and what is a heavy weapon.

Chinese Broadswords are Fencers. They are called broadswords because of the fact they are broad in width, but they are very thin and flexible, light and fast.

Don't confuse fencing with French fencing. Fencing is now a blanket term for a category of weapons. Chinese broadswords, Katanas, Rapiers, Knife Main-Gauche, Epee, Foil, Scimitar, Sabre, Tulwar, Falchion, and yes the beloved Wakazashi - and I am sure others.

And a Foil is about as much a weapon as a Shinai. Sure it can kill, but who would go adventuring with a bamboo practice sword or a Foil? Really? A foil has a knob on the end so you don't stab anybody. You can kill with a roll of toilet paper or a plastic fork...

So I could go on boring you to death with explanations. Like you care anyway. But the fact is, (and I know this is a game and not real life) in our world Katanas are fencers. Sure in the game they are not.

So. You can use a feat like the one used for scimitars to make them Dervish fencers for Sarenrae or you can consider them light already. Crit 18, 19, 20. X2, D8 damage. D10 2 handed. 3 1/ ft long.

4 1/2 for the Bastard Sword version that is a heavy non fencing weapon. D10 damage.

These are just my opinions, but they are based on years of experience playing, researching and living in the world of swords and other hand held weapons. I started Dungeons and Dragons in the 70's, when I was 12, DMing when I was 14, Fencing with Rapier when I was 8, and only used a Foil a few times, though I have been around them allot. I have axes, Katanas (Real ones), Viking Swords, Fighting Canes, Staffs, Chinese Broadswords etc. And while I know many SCA people, I do Viking Re Enactment. I also Study Kung Fu 2 Styles, 1 style of Karate, 3 styles of Tai Chi, and have studied Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, Brazilian Jujitsu, and various other styles of combat. Including I and 2 handed Katana, and using 2 Katanas for fighting and also Kendo :)

I have always liked Psionics in fantasy as its always been there :) They shamans seem to have had it and the Celts and such. Dreams and Visions. Psychic abilities are a staple of fantasy. Golarion has had Psi from the beginning with the Vudrans, Irori, Half Elves being their Psi race and the other planet in their solar system having a Psionic based life ecosystem.
Dreamscarred Press has a great Pathfinder Psionic System so why not run with that. It works rather well and is balanced :)

Thor had a girlfriend, a Giantess named Jarnsaxa or Iarnsaxa who was the chief rival for Sifs affections. She bore him two sons Mangi and Modi.

Mangi- Magni's strength almost match that of his father. Magni was given the horse called Gullfaxi, "Golden Mane", when he rescued his father from the frost giant Hrungnir.

Modi- Apart from his association with his father (Thor) and brother Magni, and that he survived Ragnarok, not much is known about Modi. Magni and Modi survived Ragnarök, inheriting their father's hammer, Mjollnir, Modi appeared to be both a poet and a warrior, in the kennings found in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. Yes Thors son with a Giantess inherited Mjolnir!

Thor and Sif- Thor married Sif, the golden-haired goddess. He was the father of a daughter, named Thrud. Goddess of corn and fertility(?). She was goddess with beautiful golden hair. Not much is known about Sif. Sif was possibly a Vanir goddess originally, like the goddess Freyja.

Sif was the wife and consort of Thor. She had a son named Ull.

Originally, Sif was probably a prophetess known as the Sibyl, which Snorri Sturluson mentioned in the prologue of the Prose Edda. This Sibyl married Tror (Thor), who she had met in the realm of Thrace, which Sturluson called Thrudheim. If this is truly the case, then she became the goddess of prophecy and divination, though in the usual Norse mythology, she doesn't appeare to have any gift with divination.

Gotta love those old stories ;)

Depends on the wolfsbane... if its the rare yellow flowering low to the ground vaguely dandilion like, its a mild skin healing plant...

If its the yellow or purple monkshood... the root can be used to be crushed and rubbed on arrow tips to kill bears. Dont leave roots around where your cattle and other livestock can eat them or you wont have your livestock! Sometimes the roots are mistaken for horseradish roots. When you put the roots to your lips it causes numbness and tingling... ;) and this is real world herbology :)

Its used by healers and early doctors and in oriental medicine. Its an anisthetic, treatment for appendicitis, widely valued as an anodyne, diuretic, and diaphoretic, Great caution was required, as abraded skin could absorb a dangerous dose of the drug, and merely tasting some of the concentrated preparations available could be fatal. The local anaesthesia of peripheral nerves can be attributed to at least eleven alkaloids with varying potency and stability.

Internal uses were also pursued, to slow the pulse, as a sedative in pericarditis and heart palpitations, and well diluted as a mild diaphoretic, or to reduce feverishness in treatment of colds, pneumonia, quinsy, laryngitis, croup, and asthma due to exposure.

Taken internally, aconite acts very notably on the circulation, the respiration, and the nervous system. The pulse is slowed, the number of beats per minute being actually reduced, under considerable doses, to forty, or even thirty, per minute. The blood-pressure synchronously falls, and the heart is arrested in diastole.

In small doses, tends to relieve pain, if this is present.

Wolfsbane has been ascribed with supernatural powers in the mythology relating to werewolves and other lycanthropes, either to repel them, relating to aconite's use in poisoning wolves and other animals, or in some way induce their lycanthropic condition, as aconite was often an important ingredient in witches' magic ointments. In folklore, aconite was also said to make a person into a werewolf if it is worn, smelled, or eaten. They are also said to kill werewolves if they wear, smell, or eat aconite. Other accounts claim Wolfsbane is used as a brew to prolong the lycanthropic condition in the event a werewolf became under the full moon's influence.

But this is neither here nor there, most see Grendle as trollish, and the other as dragonish. So I think that Tarrasque would fit nicely as its lest traditionally dragonish and fits the scaly, spiky, able to eat a man whole :) Then again, you could go Dragon Turtle, or Giant Turtle :)

Here is one of my sourses - paleontologist Björn Kurtén has entertained and expanded this theory to determine that trolls are a distant memory of an encounter with Neanderthals :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Grendle shouldnt be a Dragon, as Beowulf kills Grendle and Later goes out and Kills a Dragon, and a distinction is made between the two. Grendle works best as a Troll as far as modern fantasy goes.

As far as Neanderthals go. Lots of Neanderthals are found in northern Europe. The Scandinavians credit the last killing off of them at about the time of the Vikings, and there are theories that small pockets of them survived up untill that time. And that many of our stories are about them.

Technically he'd be an Aristocrat/Expert in a more modern setting, but in a fantasy setting, I think he would definatly study magick. He has the mind for it, and it is a very intelectual field of study. I was never sure why wizards didnt get very many skill points as they are supposed to be learned persons of study... or Men of Knowledge... etc...

Or you could set up a rulership of a council like the grey council on Babylon 5 at the end 5 from the workers, 2 from religion and 2 from military to run the country :) And from that group elect one as the speaker... or as I do it Wizards instead of Clerics. So 2 from Magic instead of Religion.
