I feel that one of the easiest assumptions to make is only vague transparency at best, due to the ability to use your skills to identify weaknesses rather than having them all be apparent, as one example. But that does nothing to invalidate the full transparency style of play. The game still functions the same, but the players are able to make better informed tactical decisions.
I very rarely weigh in around here, but some of these responses have been almost unfairly harsh.
And again, we're getting into fluff and crunch and rules and backstory. The bottom line is, my DM didn't decide I needed sacrificial babies and deals with the devil to apply my learning to extending my life. That's my group, my game, my story. And Alwin's could be the same way. Or it could be totally different where the lich only becomes such by horrible deeds and can never ever ever become good again. They're both okay.

Again, I realize this flies for some, not everyone. My group ruled that there is no alignment penalty, nor terrible horrible deeds for figuring out a new soul-tank. Some people require sacrificial babies, deals with devils, and permanent evil taint. They're both cool. Why is there still an argument?
I get that. And the bottom line is, I did figure it out.
Rule of Cool, except making it work mechanically.

Rambling
In an ongoing game I'm in, our DM has a tendency to throw very large, very capable enemies at our party. Standard fair, Minotaur barbarian by third level, large category black dragon with minions by fifth, 12th level PC classed, PC equipped and specced gunslinger by seventh.

After some rather disturbing realization of character mortality in my game, I began looking for a new build when my floating caster eventually gets taken out. We have an oracle buffer with some minor battlefield control, and a LOT of melee muscle in the form of a vanilla monk, and a sword saint/shield focused fighter to lay on some defence and hurt on things. We also posses a vanilla bow ranger laying on some ranged attacks and group bonuses.

I looked at a lot of different ideas, but another ranged character just isn't appealing to me, whether magic or weapon based. So I thought why not try something odd?

cutting to the chase
Melee debuffer.
Monk, with weapon adept and drunken master archetypes. As for what's allowed, anything pathfinder is A-OK, but too much cheesing is punished severely.

I don't have a specific build for this, it's a very new idea for me, with very little set in stone.

Our group uses a 4d6 standard roll for ability scores, and I was thinking of going for a human katana user, specializing in dirty trick and disarm as time goes on. The lack of flurry will hurt, but in blinding enemies, disarming them and letting them pick them up or fumble blindly, AoO's should help balance that out some.

Additionally, while reading through the wording on drunken strength, it's worded on the SRD as a melee attack, not an unarmed strike or monk weapon, so I could quite literally use it with any melee weapon as I read it, is this the case?

Other ideas I had were using the equipment trick with the scabbard as a ranged weapon, the occasional stunning fist, and possibly snake style. Or possibly the feint chain as opposed to one of the other maneuver?

The idea here is in terms of mechanics, to be a character that while isn't as severely a threat as the other frontline fighters, is dangerous when underestimated, or when fighting in conjuction with them.

As our DM is a sucker for roleplay, it's quite literally a washed up old swordsman, who's 'stunning fists' are represented in foul breath, fights in a dirty and honorless manner, and a surprising amount of skill at exploiting an enemy's vulnerabilities. Ideally someone to continually cripple enemies and garner their attention from other squishy people, and back it up with some emergency defence should crippling them fail.

Finally, would there be any way to make this sort of character viable at different age categories? I've been a sucker for older characters, but I can never find a good way to make a melee one work.
The Idea

I know chains have been mentioned before, but a character with profeciencies with locks and chains in combat (Paticularly certain grapplers) ruin even the toughest fights headed our way. The character was really upset, with no ability to ever make saves, or stop telling the truth whenever asked, save paying a bunch after finding someone to remove the curse. (And a lot of people weren't seeing his lying as a bad thing.)

He played true to character. He systematically stole from PC's and NPCs, and then just killed anyone questioning him. Got away with hiding it long enough that by the time PC's were on the way to apprehend their "friend" He had wove a trail of blood into a city, tortured a spellcaster until he promised to remove it. When our party got to the scene of his ruined house, the dead family, and the disembowled 'curing agent,' the party was shocked. The now NE Aligned Thief had his villanous rant, equating to "I warned you, I told you, I asked for help, and you all wanted to me keep this. MY TEETH ARE BLUE." (He had a need to lie by this point.) Then 'detonated' a surprise he left in the fighter's bag, spilling out a magical poison that killed one PC, and left the other two with permanent ability damage, then ran off to become a villain NPC.

Our player's weren't happy with it, but nobody could fault the playing in character that well. (It really was true to spirit, and both player and character had given warnings that the thief would not stay like this, no matter what.) My point is, for better or worse (Both, according to my example) Curses like that can lead to great RP, or terrible campaign derailment. Our player is still mourning the loss of his burglar, as are some of the other party members for their respective losses, but it was all done tried and true. My personal rule? When inventing a curse, talk it out with the target first, so that I don't have to worry about a psychopath endangering an entire city. :p
So, at one point, I cursed a thief to never lie.
I was playing in a level 18 campaign, with a level 16 wizard with a ridiculous ammount of skill points. The DM had actually allowed me to create glass "Baubles" which were ridiculously expensive for their level, but allowed a free casting of a spell when "broken" but only if done so by the spell caster. So my wizard with practically nothing of value besides the clothes on his back funnelled everything into making these. the DM thought I was playing my usual, spell-paranoid self.

Long story short, the party finds themselves in an unwinnable situation. Undead silver dragon (Plus family), minions everywhere, etcetera, etcetera. I thought about it for a moment, and the wizard won the initative. My first move was to send the party to safety, got them out of the immidiate danger. DM was not happy about this, as this was supposed to be his "Epic fight" and hadn't counted on me actually preparing spells from my forbidden school. >_>

As all the baddies charge in after their 'villainous rant' about how I was doomed, I took a 5-foot step, and made an acrobatics check to 'saunter like a baws' into them. I then said 'I voluntarily fail, and fall.' The DM is still confused. "Okay. you fall onto your ass as the enemies charge in, you are now prone." I think about it for a moment. Then wince, and say 'Gee, I guess I shouldn't have been wearing my fanny-pack backwards then. You know, the one with my baubles?' I show him my character sheet. Everything is legit. "Fanny-sack (Worn backwards) Contents: 18 baubles (Wall of iron)." Eighteen simultaneous Wall of Iron spells go off. Filling the room, Practically everything is telefrag'd. The party, meanwhile, has been booking it out, and they make it to the gate just as the 'unbreakable' support beam in our former chamber was shattered by a telefrag effect from those spells. Party receives no EXP, as they did nothing. I received enough EXP posthumously to take me to level 20.
(Un)Fortunately, my Best death, funniest death, and Killer-DM moment were all the same.
