Appearance:
Tall and lithe, Saito is thin and wiry with small but steely muscles. With long black hair, dark eyes and a soft face Saito is very handsome in an androgynous way. Though fully human a faint aura of malice hangs about him, the result of an abyssal ancestor whose touch powers his innate magic.

Backstory; Part 1:
Saito is a nobody, at least that is the message the world always seemed to tell him in a thousand demeaning ways.

Born in lands under the long shadow of the Worldwound Saito never knew his parents, but his faint demonic heritage was apparent to those around him and he always lived as a borderline pariah, human enough to avoid violence beyond severe bulling but not human enough to ever be truly accepted.

As a child Saito was charming and athletic but given to bouts of morose depression as his natural gifts never defeated the taboo of his heritage in the eyes of his peers. At age sixteen he decided to end his life, making a statement by hanging himself from a tree at a local crossroads.

He went through with the act but was rescued last minute by a young man who had been traveling by, who cut down Saito as he struggled for breath in his noose and expressed horror over the act, wondering aloud what extreme suffering could have driven one so young to want to commit suicide.

When Saito kept quiet about the reasons for his attempt(loneliness not seeming in that moment to be an "Extreme Suffering" enough to impress his rescuer) The young man decided he would take Saito to his home and watch over him while he recovered until he was sure Saito was ok.

The young man, Sariel Sands, was a paladin of Iomedae and, while poor like Saito had a great zest for life, people and his Goddess.

After Saito recovered Sariel offered him a job as his attendant, wanting Saito to travel with him as he did his church's work, despite being aware of Saito's heritage.

"We don't choose our ancestors anymore than we choose what country we are born into, to hold such a thing against a person is the height of foolishness." Sariel told his friend.

The pair traveled together for over two years, Sariel teaching his attendant the sword and knowledge of his religion and worldviews.

Saito was drawn to this man, his first and only real friend. For Sariel life was a joyous experience, every moment one to be savored, every challenge a chance to test himself and in overcoming improve himself.

He was light to Saito's dark, hope to Saito's despair and everyday he spent with the man brought Saito more to life, his sensitive soul infused with the easy positivity of his friend.

A night came when on the road chasing Demons the pair encountered a cadre of witchhunters, who, upon discovering Saito's heritage, demanded that he be handed over to be exterminated.

Sariel refused, and defended his friend with words and, when that proved not enough, his blade.

The pair won the battle and that night, as the pair lay gazing up at the stars, Saito revealed the reason he had tried to end his life. He spoke of his outcast status and the loneliness, of a subtle yet steady isolation that drained the color from his world.

"I believe that a person must find their own value in living life and the value in themselves, for living for another's opinion is a sure way to be disappointed." Sariel responded to his friend.

"People often think others value and respect them far more than they actually do, and are horrified if something happens to them that reveals their true value to others, still if it helps at all know that I think the world of you and will stand by you through anything." Sariel told him, placing a hand on his shoulder and grinning at him, his genuine affection warming Saito's heart.

The pair lay looking at each other for a long moment until Saito returned the smile with equal warmth.

"At the very least you have one true friend in this world." Sariel told him, his blond hair and light skin gleaming in the light of the moon, contrasting sharply to Saito's dark features. "All of us are lucky to even have one."

Backstory; Part 2:
Saito learned much from his friend over the years, becoming more socially open and bright in aspect and outlook, though he could never match the easygoing charm of his paladin friend.

Sariel Sands was a powerful, if not high ranking and often overlooked, member of the Church of Iomedae and a skilled demon hunter, though far weaker Saito learned much of hunting Demons from his friend and after witnessing their many atrocities developed a special hatred for the evil beasts.

There was little to nothing redeeming about the Demons and Saito felt that every one of there foul number cast back into the abyss was a valuable win for the world.

Unfortunately Sariel's proficiency in defeating Demons lead to his defeat. Invited to the home of a rich nobleman who said he wanted to give thanks to Sariel for his Demon hunting, the friends were set upon by strong examples of Demon kind.

The nobleman and his friends turned out to be cultists of Baphomet and though the pair defeated the Demons and their masters Sariel was mortally wounded beyond the strength of his healing powers to recover.

As Sariel lay dying in Saito's arms the the Demon blooded man burst into tears.

"I love you." He confessed to the paladin.

Sariel, his face pale from lack of blood, smiled at his companion. "You're the best friend I have ever had, Saito." He said faintly as his eyelids slowly drooped.

"Live and be happy, you are worth it." Were his final words as he passed peacefully in the grief shuddering arms of Saito.

After returning his body to the church and his family for proper burial Saito considered trying to resurrect his friend, but despite his longing he had recognized the look in his dying friend's eyes, that of a soul truly at peace.

He considered his friend's last words but knew only being with him would ever make him happy.

An idea formed in his head, he would travel to Kenabres and join the crusade, whether or not they accepted him easily didn't matter, he would earned their respect and the chance to battle some truly strong Demons. He would exit this life the same way he lived it, fighting the forces of evil until they slew him and sent him to his best friend's side to live in joyous eternity.

Making an oath of loyalty to Iomedae and filled with righteous purpose, Saito set out to unleash his wrath against some Demons.

Personality:
While seeming lighthearted and being an easy person to get along with, skills his friend imparted to him, Saito hides deep wells of grief over the loss of his friend and anger at the Demons and cultists who took him.

Saito's true desire is to die killing the most powerful evil he can find and join his friend in the afterlife. Despite this deathwish he will not endanger any companions he might find in his journey or sell his life carelessly, Saito wants his death to contribute something meaningful to the world and Iomedae's cause so that he can die feeling satisfied.
