Congrats to the workhorse of Sacramento PFS. We're honored and lucky to have Nefreet here in NorCal.

I don't know what we'd do without him. So once again thanks for everything you do to make our hobby so awesome.

Chelaxian Inquisitor (infiltrator) of Milani - 1

From the diary of Daryth Benefrax:

Fireday, 14 Arodus 4715

Godsdamned dottari stopped me again this afternoon as I was on my way to work and made me late for my shift. I suppose I was in a hurry and 'had a suspicious look to me,' whatever the Hells that means. I was dressed as I pretty much always dress - my black trousers, my nice shirt, and my jerkin.

This one dottari kept me there questioning me over and over...

"Now then boy," he kept saying that as if to punctuate my youth like my age was the problem. "You ain't got tha look offa true Chelaxian. Prolly one a them Andorens spy, he is."

I responded "What gave it away, sir? Was it the jet-black hair? Oh wait, no; because that's the same color as Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune's hair. Is it that Alabaster skin tone that I have? No, sir, that can't be it because that is again the same coloring as Herself - Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune's skin. Is it my Ulfen blue eyes? I realized then and there that I may have push this a little too far. Well, that and the fact that he knocked me to the ground and pushed my face down into the dirt. So yeah, I could see he was about to charge me with 'Breaking the Peace' so I played nice and explained to him that I was having a bad day and it was totally unfair of me to take it out on him - a true loyal and honorable dotarri of Infernal Cheliax. He seemed to calm down a bit. I say a bit because in the end I paid him off. It was probably a shakedown the entire time. Praises be unto the Asmodean Disciplines for teaching me the correct way to pass a bribe to the dottari.

Well I made it to work, albeit a tad late. I have to say I love working at the Long Roads Coffeehouse. There are so many great people that come here to sit and talk for hours. So many great minds with a ton of ideas. I have to continually tell Jaryth that it isn't because it's close to Lady Docur's School for Girls. He thinks I took this job just to be close to the finishing school. No, I took this job to learn. I swear, one day I saw someone reading On Government - well, they were trying to hide the fact they were reading Jubannich's book, but I know what I saw. To have access to Jubannich or Hosetter, oh if only!!!

Anyway, Jaryth's gonna make fun of me for my path - tease me about girls and the like no matter what. I wish I was as easy around girls as he is - he just is easy. (In more ways that one, but that's a story for another time.) I get tongue-twisted around the fairer sex and, argh - just... learning is so much easier.

Crap - I've just admitted a whole bunch that I don't want read by the anyone - here, let me just damn myself.

My name is Daryth Benefrax and I am a member of the church of Milani. I server you coffee, wander the streets listening to you talk, I bow and scrape and I secretly pray for the day that a cleansing wind blows in from Nisroch Bay and brings with it the scent of roses and a fresh start to Kintargo. I'll lie to your face and supplicate to the Thrune's and the Asmodeans and play the good boy, but in the end I want all those loyal to the oppressors known as the Betrayers of Cheliax - aka House Thrune - gone. While I am at it...I'll just confess everthing. I can talk to women only in a professional manner, but if it ever changes to an intimate conversation I get nervous. I couldn't survive in this world without my brother Jaryth, even though he's a gigantic pain in the arse. I love talking to people and learning about them, which is why I took the coffeeshop job in the first place. I fear sharing anything about myself because Mom and Dad warned us about our faith getting in the way. F*$% it - I'm out.

*Note to self - burn this whole book tonight and start a new one ASAP. No evidence. The catharsis was fun but back to the real world, boy!*

Listening to the Know Direction coverage of the banquet and it sounds like Jason was trying to say that there were too many good psychic monsters to include them in Occult Adventures so they WILL be in Bestiary 5. If others could listen to that podcast and confirm that would be great.

Day 1 recap -

Woke up at an ungodly hour and began the long trek of the day. I started the first day by heading down to the lobby and playing a short session of the Delve wherein we all died at the hands of Rob McCreary. By all, accounts Kyra (played by the wonderful Char Baker) was the first character death of the convention. I've never participated in a Delve before and I enjoyed every death filled minute.

After the Delve I attended my first seminar - Adventure Design 101. The panelists were Crystal Frasier, Rob McCreary, and James Jacobs. The panel was fun and mostly informative. I say mostly because after the various panelists gave their opinions or tips and tricks I usually smacked my head and had an 'er-duh, you knew that' moment. All of the panelists were approachable and energetic which made for an entertaining panel.

Next I met up with some yahoo and played in Rob McCreary's "Assault on Redlake Fort." See some yahoo's above post for some of those details. Overall I had a great time playing in Rob's game (well, both of the really).

After that game it came time for the PFS Special. Wow. So much fun. Andrew Christian was our GM for the game and he did a fantastic job. Before the game, Thursty came by our table and announced to the whole room that we were the luckiest table because Andrew is such a good GM - and Andrew lived up to that. He rolled with the numerous punches that we threw at him, hammed it up fantastically (ask him about the wonderful halfling lass who stood against the town guards), and provided one of the best role-playing experiences that I've ever had.

Char and Dennis Baker just rolled by - Hi gang!

The Verdigris and Æthelwulf have just sat down so...

I'm off to drink my coffee and chat about the upcoming day. More later.

Andi has been a mentor to me, a friend, a GM whose talents are excellent and whose communication skills are unparallelled. I first met Andi right after we were both promoted to Venture-Lieutenant at DunDraCon in February 2013. She was taking charge coordinating the numerous PFS tables at the convention even though she did not volunteer for that job and at that point I knew that she was the type of VL I wanted to emulate. Throughout the years I have become close friends with her, asking for her guidance when I need it, learning tips and tricks to being a better GM as well as a better Venture Officer, and offering the same back to her whenever she might need it. In my opinion, Andi is the best type of person to represent the greater PFS community; a GM who has a great depth of rules knowledge, the ability to tell an enriching story through unique characterizations and clever role-playing, and the aspirations to create a community wherein we introduce the next generation into the hobby that we all love.

It is my distinct honor to introduce Andrea Brandt as Northern California's newest 5 Star GM.

Joth follows Cole into Nurah's tent in a daze. Upon placing Nurah on her bed Joth begins, "I... This..."struggling to find the proper way to speak to his commander.

"Sir?" he inquires and then begins without awaiting acknowledgement, "This. Was. Wrong. Sosiel was right. Her struggle was over and she was down. We had an opportunity to not only find out why, but possibly redeem her honor."

"When this comes to light, how are we supposed to be the victors when we've become no better than The Enemy? Isn't redemption tenable? Shouldn't redemption be striven for because that is what separates us from the hordes? Is this the Righteous that is to be brought to bear on Drezen; trial by execution without a chance at redemption? I'm only asking because you are our... leader." His words come out as genuine questions. His world shattered, his betters leaders revealed; Joth's words aren't from a hardened wizened captain risen through the ranks over a lifetime, but of young man caught in a hard world and forced to adopt a public persona due to circumstances being thrust upon him.

Jothinra blinks, jaw firmly set, a steely gaze upon Sir Cole.

"Sir, I'll address your wishes in a moment, but first," he says rather rapidly.

"I couldn't give two lame-nag droppings how you and the rest of the Paragon Knights wish to address each other in the privacy of your own company - you're battle-brothers, friends and equals and have a camaraderie that breeds familiarity in private, you've more than earned that right. But you have lost that luxury in public, SIR. So this horses#!t wherein you've instructed Sir Serra to refer to you casually, as Co...,"he bites the words that almost escaped his mouth, clearly uncomfortable, "by your given name,in front of the GODSDAMMED troops is unacceptable!"

The captain begins pointing around the muster-field.

"Look around you Sir Cole. This isn't some back-water militia. This is the holy army of Mendev, by the Grace of Iomedae and Her Majesty Queen Galfrey. Each soldier, here in this army, has sworn oaths and taken holy orders to protect everything that Her Majesty deems to be in the best interests of the Crusade. We have orders. Orders that reflect our honor. Rules. Rules that separate us from the inherent chaos and madness that lies just yonder over the West Sellen River. Guidelines. Guidelines that show us that with a strict and ordered life this world won't surrender to the Enemy. And every man and woman in Her Majesty's Army is the stalwart stone in that wall that separated separates us from Them. To casually throw away the honor bestowed upon you by Her Majesty, for the sake of familiarity or expediency, spits in the face of every. Single. Person. Here. You, SIR, have attained what many of these people only dream of after they've lost brothers and sisters on the field of battle. To have their service and sacrifice recognized, BY HER MAJESTY! And... and... And you throw it away, like a used bum rag." He punctuates the last phrase gesturing to the latrine pits.

He wipes the gathered spittle from the corners of his mouth absently before finishing.

"When we are in private you may address me as Jothinra. You can call me as the half-breed ass#*le in the company of the other Paragon Knights, for all I care. Hells, I look forward to the day when you might count me among equals and friends and refer to me as Joth in the privacy of our own company. But in public, in front of the troops, you will refer to me as Captain. Too many of my friends had to die for me to attain this rank and I will not have their memory and sacrifice dishonored for the sake of expediency or because you care not a whit about decorum. Because Her Majesty does care and that means everything... Sir."

Serra blinks a few times, remember the events of last night.

"While you didn't formally say anything of the sort, it was clear from your hand upon your sword like a 6-year-old's newfound delight upon discovering his pee-pickle. You almost drew it, and was but a Queen's nod away from slaying two of my unarmed friends," Serra says resolutely. "If you think that wasn't going to leave some doubt about your ability to think independently about us, then we should discuss the importance of first impressions."

"Yes, let us discuss matters of first impressions. Firstly we are told that your group is personally responsible for the utter destruction of, not only the wardstone that protects fair Kenabres, but the entire first line of defense of the nation of Mendev. Secondly without the proper introductions or ceremony or acknowledgement by The Queen - a man, still reeking of whatever bottle he deigned to crawl out of, walks up to Her Majesty hand extended as if we are to take you at your word that you haven't been corrupted or influenced by The Enemy. Thirdly, the man expected to lead this endeavor is so obviously ready for a suicide-mission that the pallor of Pharasma Herself seems cling to him like a child holding a blanket - and then makes demands of His Queen..." he pauses to catch his breathe, "And finally you come to me to question my ability to think independently and say that I don't realize the importance of first impressions?"

Breathe! Breathe! Breathe! NOPE!

"...and I am still here because it is my sworn duty to be here." He spits the words at Sir Serra, "My honor, Sir Serra, keeps me. My oaths, more precious to me than my own life, holds me up, illuminates my path, and guides me to be right here! Between Mendev and The Enemy. Where. I. Belong."

Breathe! Calm yourself!

Joth shuts is eyes for a heartbeat and slowly opens them.

"But I speak out of turn. Forgive me Sir Serra Iondri Phaer. I know you and your comrades have noble hearts. It is just...hard at the moment to see them. I will be better in the future about speaking out."

"Sir Serra' wrote:
"What? 'Ennobled'? What does that even mean?"

Joth answers Sir Serra as he swings his legs onto his mount.

"You are to be knighted by The Queen, this eve. May Iomedae guide your day and find you in good health and spirits tonight. I have some packing to do before we depart. Please inform Sir Cole that I'll provide a muster-roll and disposition as soon as I finish."

Serra stutters for a moment, shocked, before bumbling his way to return the Lastwall Fist Bump.

"I...I was unaware you served in Lastwall, Ser Jothinra," Serra blurts, trying to make nice knight talk. "My father always dreamed of serving there. It was his dream to die upon the battlements, protecting the realm from the orcs."

"It's Captain in front of the troops, Captain Jothinra to strangers and Joth to my friends, please," Joth smiles continuing, "I was sired in Lastwall. A small fishing village just a day's ride southwest of Vellumis called Stormhaven. I spent my coltling years there and in Magnimar, travelling between the two, shuffled amongst family after my parents died at the Second Battle of Grizznash Field."

* * *

Sir Serra Iondri Phaer wrote:
"Your horse. He's a fierce one...good lines," Serra mentions, running his hand along the charger's back. "What is his name? Do you ride him in battle?"

"Agathon's Pride," he says beaming, "He's a true friend. Though we've been through a couple of engagements together my strength isn't in mounted warfare."

* * *
Joth equally takes his time in conversation, enjoying the company while he finishes grooming Agathon's Pride. He will be candid with Serra telling him of his time in Lastwall and attending the War College in Vigil, but the Vigilant Watch wasn't for him - the pressing matter of The Worldwound seemed a more necessary place for him. Family intervened and had him placed in the Colour and Honor Guards.

Sir Serra wrote:
"Did she knight you herself, Jothinra? That must have been quite the honor," Serra asks with some pangs of jealousy. "It cannot be easy to tear yourself from her side...but, she feels this mission is important. It shows her trust in you that she would put you on this mission."

Joth smiles once again, "Good Sir Serra, I am not ennobled. I thank you for your courtesy but it isn't due yet. Yes, I am a captain, but that is largely a matter of a field-promotion. The enemy didn't just strike here in Kenabres, there was a feint in Nerosyan at the same time. He lets the weight of the last statement hang in the air before continuing. "Members of the Colour and Honor Guard died during the fighting and I was the senior ranking officer when the smoke cleared. Her Majesty honored me by pronouncing my field-promotion."

He is puzzled for a moment, "Did I give the impression that I was disappointed in being asked to accompany you into the 'wound? That was *never* my intent. Her Majesty's orders are her orders. I trust in Queen Galfrey, Iomedae, and my brothers-in-arms - what more need be said? I've pledged myself to The Cause and will go where I am needed the most to defend that which has been asked of me. "

"Now I have a question for you. You see those 40 soldiers to the east there?" He says gesturing to a contingent of soldiers on the mustering field clad in heavy armor. "That is the remnant of the 2nd Troop of Horse Guards of Nerosyan. They aren't free-lances nor those called low templars - they are all paladins - military men and women, professional soldiers sworn to Mendev, Iomedae and the Queen..."

"...and you and your brethren. You all will be ennobled tonight, with all the rights and privileges that such a title confers. And you will have a company of Horse as your army - a name will be expected. Would you take that back to Sir Cole and the rest and let us know what we are to be called?"

I just wanted to give a ginormous shout-out to California's own Lord of Pain - Rand. Thank you very much man for getting the 2013 PFS PaizoCon Bloggery thread going again this year. Since I am a small business owner I cannot take time off this year to attend PaizoCon, (too many employees going out of state or going to Fourth of Juplaya) but this thread will serve as a proxy for me being there.

Rand, you rock! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule and letting the folks at home know the state of the con as you get the information.

I look forward to seeing you all next year.

So like others have said in this thread, it's all about how you look at the class. For me I saw the Cavalier as someone who was a battlefield leader first and foremost. My main character right now is an Order of the Dragon Cavalier 7(Honor Guard, Strategist) / Fighter 3. Sure he only has a 30 AC, but he can Aid Another to increase AC at a +8(+3 Order of the Dragon, +1 Intercept Archtype feature, +3 Benevolent Armor, +1 from Ring of Tactical Precision) 4 times a round (Combat Reflexes) as an attack of opportunity (Bodyguard feat).

To me (and most GMs I've played with) that makes my character the most dangerous target on the battlefield. Sure the rogue or barbarian is pumping out the most amount of damage in melee, but I can make sure that they DON'T get hit.

    *edited for spelling*
