Hi Guys,

Recent events have had me re-evaluating my commitment to the games I'm currently involved with here on these boards.

As you've probably noticed I've had a few noticable absenses this summer, again due to the fact I've become quite
a bit more busy, usually leading to a rushed decision late at night...do I logon and get some posts in?

Ultimately, it began to feel more like a job than a hobby...<< I have to get a post in...don't want to hold the game up >>

It slowly dawned on me that I just wasn't looking forward to posting, even though I enjoy each of the games I'm in immensely.

When something you enjoy becomes something you don't, it's time to re-evaluate.

Though it's a hard decision, I've decided to take a hiatus from the boards.

Apologies to players and GMs leaving you in the lurch, so to say.
Extra thanks to GMs for allowing me in to your games.

Rhys straightens from his examination of the nearby hand, careful not to touch it or the desk.

He watches Lichen perform his ritual, then moves over the stand behind Zask as he opens the door...

Apologies, lads....

Rhys watches with apprehension as Vhaesil inscribes Zask's true name in the book, not sure what to expect...but not really expecting nothing.

He joins the other two in descending into the mountain, quickly sketching a few of the faces carved in to the walls.

When, Dolgrin reveals the 'study' his eyes widen in interest, again pulling his journal out and rendering a study of the sigil, no matter how uneasy it makes him feel.

He then approaches on of the nightstands, and leans down to investigate th skeletal hand laying there.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 Passive is 17
Religion: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Sorry for my absense. Work and family really kicked my ass last week...

Rhys give the strange picture a side-long glance as he leaves the room, uncomfortable with just how unsettled the painting made him.

He stomps through the snow , following the tracks with the others, pausing when the body emerges from the whitenss.

"Seems we've found our homesteader..." he says, crouching next to the body and attemting to rolling it over, looking for clues...

Investigation: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Rhys stares at the painting, his face a mask of concern, "What's going on here?" he asks no one in particular, then he takes out his journal and makes a rough sketch of the portrait.

Rhys walks around the hut , amazed at the runes and such written there. He even ventures inside, taking care not to disturb Vhaezil, stopping to make a sketch before going back outside.

He joins Zask in investigating the cabin, standing close as the little man attempts the door...

Rhys shakes his wind-touselled hair, "At least the wind has stopped. " he comments, pulling out his journal and rendering a quick sketch of the mountaintop graveyard.

he then hurries to catch up with Vhaezil and Zask, his eyes peeled for the strange and unusual...

Investigation: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Rhys looks down at the now shallow remains of his tea, as if trying to divine some guidance from the pattern of leaves stuck to the cup.

The with a shrug, he taps the remains out to the ground and hands the cup back to the loony , old man, "So long, and thanks for the tea."

Rhys raises an eyebrow at Vhaezil's uncouth action, but nonetheless also watches the loony man's reaction, a smile twitching at the corner of his mouth.

Rhys makes a slow circuit of the 'memorial' , quickly sketching drafts of some of the more interesting motifs.

Tucking his journal back into his pouch, he takes the offered tea, allowing it to warm his hands first then sipping , smacking his lips in appreciation, "Indeed it is...the world, I mean. But, this is one place we must go, despite the danger....perhaps, in some way, because of the danger. " he says the last part almost to himself.

"We have some trail rations to add..." he offers.

Hmm, same with me...

Rhys walks through the grisly display, occasionally fingering a piece of 'leather', commenting "A great deal of passions here...if not a matching talent..."

Despite the roughness of the artistic efforts, Rhys notes what he can, to later record in his journal.

Rhys ruefully hands over his lost gold to the gloating miner, looking askance as his companions revive the beaten Zask.

Walking over, he listens to the philosophical meanderings, "My mentor always advised not to get into scraps where you didn't have the advantage...too easy to get killed otherwise. "

He then looked at the sky, "Let's see to lodgings and get going at first light..." he suggests.

Disappointed in his failure to extract any meaningful information from the taciturn miners, Rhys leaves the tavern he was in and set out to find his companions.

Finding a group of miners gathering around out side another tavern, Rhys rises up on his toes to see what was happening.

Seeing Zask about to square off with a lumbering half-ord, Rhys call out to the nearby miners, "Who's willing to take a wager....5 gold on the halfling!"

Rhys shrugs at Dolgrins offer, but takes his coin anyway. He also heads for the local watering holes, making his way through the various presses of stinky miner bodies, seeing if he can glean any idea of the state of the local wilderness.

Rhys, who'd followed along behind Dogrin, holds up the purchase order, "Actually, it's your shipment...from Ashwick. They were waylaid by some ogres, we happened along and killed the ogres and, well....here we are..."

Rhys circles around the others, until satisfied the dense foliage doesn't contain any other threats.

"Usually..." he comments to Vhaezil's statement.

He then stows his bow and begin to efficiently separate the ogre's head from thier bodies, tying the trophies to the side of the wagon, "Proof of our good deed....might be a bounty on such fellows."

As the others tend to the dead and search, Rhys keeps an arrow knocked and scans the surrounding trees, alert for the appearance of any other ogres...

Rhys keeps up his bombardment....he does glance down a the sudden appearance of a pile of tresure for a moment, before getting back at the task at hand...

Damage, Sneak Attack: 1d6 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (4) = 11

Rhys moves out onto the path to avail himself of a better angle on the ogre that remained a threat.

Once he was satisfied on his new position, he drew, cocked and fired...

Seeing how big the ogres actually are, Rhys thinks to himself, "I think I'll stay right here...

Drawing another arrow back to his hear, he relaxes until the right moment present's itself, then looses the arrow...

arrow, at red ogre: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
damage, sneak attack: 1d6 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (5) = 12

Rhys shadows Zask as he moves up the trail at pace, sliding in behind the same rock....

Once sort of covered behind the rock, Rhys draws an arrow from his quiver , sights on the nearest ogre and fires...

Short bow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
If advantage gained from Dolgrin's attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Rhys looks back at Penelope and gives her a shrug and a grin before hurrying after the others....

Rhys' eyebrow raises at Lichen's transformation, "I think the small man and the wolf will suffice..." he comments, more to himself than anyone else.

Not only the canny eyes Lichen notices Vhaezil's new adornment, Rhys notices as well, eyebrows raised...he notes the design of the runic symbol, so that he can sketch it later in his notebook.

Having gathered a fair accounting of the neighboring environs from his earlier stay in town, Rhys opines, "We'll be travelling through some mountainous terrain, far from civilization, we should equip ourselves accordingly. Rope and rations to begin with I think."

In the big city:

Rhys takes up the wrapped book eagerly, placing it securely into his pack, right next to his travel journal.

Looking up, he smiles at Avastan, "Fare they well, until next time."

Giving the apprentices a nod, Rhys leaves the smithy and begins his journey back to join up with his new companions.

"Fascinating..." Rhys commented quietly from beside the group, they being unaware he'd joined them , "This sounds like a wonderfully interesting discovery."

In the big city:

Rhys' time in the city re-invigorates him, energized him, the people, the politics, the multitude of plots and devious plans.

Returning to Astavan after traversing the city many times, he provides what information he was able to glean.

Leaning against the rock wall, Rhys says to Astavan, "Well, I'll be off then...back to the hinterlands. " a slight scowl on his face.

Then he brightens a bit, taking the arcane primer from his pack, "Galen said he'd leave the next book for me...I've finished this one."

Rhys nods , remembering now the killing of the Duke and family and the chaos that obviously has ensued, "Right, everyone's maneovering, looking for advantage." he says thougtfully.

"I've some time, so yes, some work would be appreciated. But first, here's my notebook....I ran across some interesting people and places." Rhys says, holding out his worn travel journal.

Blackburn:

The first few moments as the sounds, sights and smell of the city blasted into Rhys' senses was like a balm to the young man. The stresses of life on the road and the uncomfortable journeys through the wilderness faded.

A tight smile on his lips and a tighter grip on his belt pouch, Rhys threaded his way through the throngs of people, catching out of the corner of his eye a deft pickpocket working his trade, then in front: a very un-deft thief getting his brains beaten out.

Moving on, Rhys made his way to the smithy, grinning at Astavan's gibe and question, "A bit of all three, I suppose." he answered, then his own question, "What's with all of the imperials and mercenaries? A war happening I haven't heard of? "

As Dolgrin and the other make ready to leave the town, Rhys joins them, stating, "I've some business across the ferry in Jameson's Crossing, I'll travel with you as far as Milborne, then continue on my way. See you back here in a week."

He's true to his word, bidding farewell to Lichen and Zask as they leave the trail into the wilderness, and again at Milborne, as he grasps Dolgrin's hand in farewell...

Sorry, I've been trying to figure out what Rhys is going to do for a week in this small town :)

Then I remembered he's going to go arcane trickster....

So , he'll spend considerable time studying the arcane primer his mentor gave him, as well as doing what he does...gather information. He'll talk up pretty much everyone in town at some time or other, piecing if he can as complete a picture of the society and relationships of the townsfolk.

Shall he make a bunch of Investigation Rolls ?

Rhys watches the delivery from the doorway, then turns at Dolgrin's question, nodding, "Indeed." he says to the dwarf.

Leaning in, he calls out to the alchemist, "Pardon me, uh...Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan Ibn Al Abbas Ibn Rashid Ibn Hamad....Sir, " he says all in a rush, hoping he got it right, "There's a love-struck boy back in Milborne who's convinced your apprentice has gone missing. Have you seen her?"

Ryhs gives the guards a little wave and contintues on with the others, glad to finally get this delivery done with.

Rhys sighs and gazes wistfully back down the street where the inn sits, comfortable and warm.

"Off we go!" he declares in mock enthusiasm, shouldering his pack, and offering with a hand, the opportunity for Lichen to lead the way...

As the other make their exit, Rhys looks up a the sky and opines, "it's late enough that , from what the locals tell me, we won't make Thurmaster before dark. We should stay the night and set off at dawn..."

Rhys leans against the door jam as the others talk with their 'savior', alternating looking out into the street and watching Zask and Vhaezil's chat.

He nods a the carpenter's comment on the condition of the track to Thurmaster, glad he has some more corroboration on the lay of the land between here and their destination..

He waits expectantly for the others to finish...

Sorry guys, hell of a week...

Rhys sighs a huge sigh of relief as the boy is drawn from the brown river, injured but alive.

With a wry smile, he realized that most of his relief is that he didn't have to get into that water himself.

His good feeling however are dashed by the suspicious comments from the locals. The back of his neck grew hot as his anger grew, and he was about to let fly with some scathing invective, when the holyman in white appeared and upped the ante.

Seething, Rhys once again was about to sally forth, when the archer intervened...

Insight: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

...and Rhys' anger subsided. Seeing Vheazil about to do someing infernally stupid, Rhys declared loudly, "I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions, Sheriff!"

As he does so, he moves forward and bumps gently into Vhaezil, laying a hand on the diabolists hand gripping the scroll, shielding it from suspicious eyes, "Don't...he's giving us an out...", Rhys says, his eyes never leaving the holyman.

Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Rhys runs with the others to the riverside at the panicked scream of the children.

When the child in the river appears, his heart leaps. Then when the slimy brownfin appears, his face screws up in doubt, "What in blazes is that?"

Noticing that he was ankle deep in the brown water, he resists the urge to step back, instead staying put in case he can render aid. With that in mind, he turns and places his pack on the shore and pulls out his coil of rope.

He then hands it off to one of his more adventurous companions as they venture further into the opaque waters...

Rhys waves away Lichen's concern for the girl, "The boy's been courting the girl for some time, but she's often out of town. In Thurmaster. She's apprenticed to the man we're bringing this chest to. Chances are we'll find her there. Seem she's more interested in stinky chemical than our pining suitor."

Turning to Dolgrin, "Your presence would be welcome of course, but the sooner this delivery is made, the soon we can be on to something else."

Nodding at the wisdom of the locals in matters of the lay of the land, Rhys the turns the conversation to the curious exchange at the door, indicating the boy with his chin, asking softly, "What's his story...lost his girl he says?" hoping the men's wish to gossip is greater than their respect for the boy....or lass.

Rhys watches and listens to the exchange with the bereft Andren from the door way, then moves aside as he stomp back into the tavern.

"I'll see if I can get some more info on the lay of land towards Thurmaster..." he says, then wheels himself into the dimmer light of the tavern.

Once inside, he'll cast his eyes about, then range up to the bar, order up an ale and start chatting with any local that'll bear it.
