Getting another Scroll of Enlarge Person.

At the Store.

Renae was in the amidst of deciding on whether she needed to buy another scroll of enlargement when she was distracted by the corner of her eye catching the sight of Kiley's newest accessory.

"You look incredible in it. Truly. The feather and scarf gives you a delectable red flair," she says without thinking, the words just coming to her. Immediately realizing just how incredibly flirty that sounds, the wizard's cheeks go red and she turns away. "I meant you look, uh, good. Very dashing, yes."

Wanting the sear awkwardness of that embarrassment to end as quickly as possible, Renae quickly grabbed at the desired scroll and rushed to the storekeeper without even so much as giving Kiley a backward glance. After that she was out the door.

At the Bramblemouth Den.

Another trek into the Churlwood later, Renae was with everyone else at the lair of the Bramblemouth goblins.

"Well, let's hope that our new goblin friends here keep their word," Renae whispers nervously to no one in particular.

Earlier.

Renae struggled for words as she tried to tell Stryn the tale of Francis the Pantless between snorts. "It's well, ha, quite a tale in town. I would you tell you but, ha, I seem to be having some trouble." Hopelessly bemused, Renae nudged Kiley and asked that she explain the tale. It was only fair after all, she was the one who helped conjure the story into being.

At the Guardhoouse.

"I wouldn't sell ourselves so short, Kiley," Renae smoothly retorts, feeling strangely satisfied with what they've accomplished so far.

"We were able to destroy the trailgaunt and were able to secure a bargain with the goblins. I'd say its good start for our Churlwood misadventures. Speaking of which–" the wizard turned to address the others. "We have more than enough funds to buy an entire barrel of pickles. Multiple in fact. We should probably make good on our deal as quickly as possible before the goblins start believing they've been deceived. I doubt their hostages much care for their hospitality."

As the party moved out to meet Captain Freson Renae found herself battling the desire to laugh out aloud at Kiley mention of Francis's name. "Heh, uh, yes, it would be in our best interest if Francis the–" she nearly snorted as the caught herself. "If Francis wasn't there. I doubt he'd be delighted to see you Kiley given The Incident. Though the look on his poor face may be worth the trouble. Renae shook her head at that. It was unbecoming. Funny, but still unbecoming. Francis may have been a fool and a layabout but he wasn't an entirely terrible person. Renae made the mental note not to immediately break into chortling if they did see him at the guardhouse. A challenge on to itself if there ever was one.

Fortunately for the wizard and Francis, it was a one none issue as the man himself wasn't there. So instead Renae watched as Henric gave the captain of the guard a surprisingly confident summary of their misadventure in the Churlwood and strange deal with the goblins.

Renae had walked back into the Cove obviously relieved that she and the party were back in civilization. They'd only been gone for a day or so but a night in the Churlwood had made her appreciate the creature comforts of her hometown all over again. "Sounds like a plan. Hopefully the good Captain is already in the guardhouse.

"Making camp sounds good," Renae piped in with a relieved smile as she started to help set-up camp. Her spells were pretty much exhausted at this point and having a night's rest would certainly hope to re-energize her resources.

At Stryn's words Renae issued out a warning and reminder to the others as the trailgaunt's corpse lay burning and unmoving before them. "Yes," Renae answered quickly. "We need to give this monster's victims a proper funeral. If not here than back in Roderic's Cove. If not, we risk the chance of them raising again tomorrow morning."

Fortune or Desna herself looked to be smiling on Renae as she seemed to be out of range of whatever supernatural aura the trailgaunt was trying to afflict. Unfortunately, that didn't change the fact that after their run in with the bandits she was running out of her spells.

Still, even with that being the case, it didn't stop Renae from finding some way to contribute to the fight. Fetching a scroll from her pack, the wizard read aloud its contents in a firm, commanding voice that immediately activated the scroll's magic. With the scroll itself now worthless, Renae focused its energies to Kiley who suddenly started to grow!

Move Action: Retrieving a stored item.
Standard Action: Activating Enlarge Person scroll and selecting Kiley as its target.

Kiley now +2 size bonus to Strength, a -2 size penalty to Dexterity and a -1 penalty on attack rolls and AC. She's also gone from Medium size to Large, meaning she now occupies a space of 10ft and has a reach of 10ft. And her greatsword went from a 2d6 to a 3d6. Enjoy :)

"Agreed," Renae whispers back. After the bandits she wasn't in the mood for a fight. That didn't mean she wasn't still cautious about whatever they were about to get into. Accordingly, her eyes looked around for any signs of fool-play or betrayal.

Just as she was about to explain the need to grant the murdered guardsmen a proper burial if they wanted to avoid the creation of more trailgaunts, Renae's eyes spotted the duo of goblins who were staring right at them.

"Well it looks like the goblins found us," she japes even as she clutches her quarterstaff tighter. "Try to negotiate the best you can, Stryn. Hopefully that will succeed and we can avoid a fight and find out about the dwarves, but if not, we have your back."

Renae looked on as Lullaby and her thugs ran off in the direction of the Roderic's Cove. Realizing that glowering at their backs was more than a little unproductive she brought up her brought on what they should do next. "Agreed. Goblins should come first. The Trailgaunt we can take care of later," she says before seeing Kiley's pained expression and quickly adding, "Or never. Hopefully Stryn is right and the trailgaunt is contained. We needed go after it if that's troubling you Kiley."

Kiley's jab but a smile on Renae's face for a moment, but she quickly found herself feeling inexplicably guilty over it. Would her old herself relish the humiliation of others so readily? She wasn't sure and that maybe bothered more than anything.

Wishing to think on something else, Renae keyed on Lullaby's description of a trailgaunt. "Yes, I'm sure you had nothing to do with that murder," she says scornfully to Lullaby before she tells the group what she knew about trailgaunts. "Trailgaunts are indeed undead creatures. To be specific, they are the wraiths of experienced travelers who died in the wildness in shame and torment. Suffice to say, they are quite aggressive and will attack anyone they find in the wilds. They especially enjoy eating the feet of those they slain. We would done well to eliminate it if we find it on they way. Trailgaunts can make more of their kind just by maiming their victims and leaving them to experience the same pain that transformed them."

Renae gave the two Roadkeepers a pointed look as they supposedly spilled the beans on their gang and its activities and tried to discern whether they was lying through their teeth.

In the end, she concluded that they likely weren't, Henric having seemingly put them an extremely fore-coming mood with his strange speech. Lullaby on the other hand liked to be making a plausible than outright lying. At least when it came to laws of Roderic's Cove anyway.

Renae sighed deeply. "She's making a lot of assumptions about the laws of Roderic's Cove, but I believes she's being honest about everything else," she tells the group, almost sounding disappointed that Lullaby was being honest. "You're right, Henric. Thort assuredly would want to know where the bodies of her guards are rather than some petty criminal. Also, knowing more about this creature would likely behoove us. I say we accept her deal as much I as I hate the idea of letting her go."

Renae's lying didn't seem to do much good in getting Lullaby to spill the beans on the Roadkeepers organization. If anything, it looked to have inflamed her defiance.

The enchanter held her head in her hands in exasperation as the others attempted to crack the bandit leader. If she was being honest, she just wanted to simply throw Lullaby and other two Roadkeepers to Captain Thort's custody, but wasn't entirely sure that desire was built on logic and ethics or her own need to see the bandit pay for praying on her hometown. It was all rather frustrating, and was made even more so by Sorshen's voice buzzing her head and demanding that she simply kill all three bandits.

As Hal tried to play Lullaby's cohorts against their boss, Renae finally spoke to others in a low whisper. "I don't think we'll get a better deal out of Lullaby. Her freedom for information looks like the only thing she'll accept, and I can't say like that deal. Even if she's sincere that she'll leave the Churlwood, she and her gang still need to face justice for their exploitation against the Cove," she says with some visible anger before taking a breath and calming. "So happen about this? If Hal isn't able to get information out of her lackeys we hold them for a day. On the morrow I can prepare a charm enhancement that should make them far more pliant to answering our questions."

"Better to know just how many more brigands we might encounter," she says to Stryn, assuming he's just playing bad cop to intimidate Lullaby.

"So how many are you, than? A few dozen? More? Whose you're leader and were is you base? Tell us that, and everything else you know about the Churlwood, and we'll let you go. I promise."

Renae didn't notice Kiley duck behind a tree, let alone her grab Lullaby's hat. She was far to distracted by the suddenly awake Lullaby.

The enchanter nodded to Henric's words. "He's right, you know, she said almost causally, but with a subtle threat hidden underneath. "You are lucky to be alive. So much so, that I believe it only prudent that you return our kindness with some answers before we decided what we're going to do with you."

Renae let out a sigh of relief as Lullaby fell to Kiley's attack. The fight seemed to be over, and to her satisfaction, it had been finished without the loss of life.

"Hal, she asked, having stepped over the still sleeping Roadkeepers and moved near the unconscious Lullaby. "can rouse her? Or do you think she needs more time before we can question her?"

Seeing that a Lullaby stupefied was steady being worn down by her compatriots, Renae cast another spell that would hopefully keep sluggish. With a wordless cry, she hit Lullaby with a terrible scream that only she could hear.

Casting Ear-Piercing Scream. That is a DC 15 vs. Fort. A successful save negates the daze effect and halves the damage.

Told you so, the disembodied voice mockingly whispers in Renae's ear.

Renae only had time to mutter back an agitated "Shut up," before her mind concentrated back to the situation at hand.

Though no small part of her wanted to immolate the bandits with fire, there was still a chance they could incapacitated with no loss of life, which in turn would make it a whole lot easier to interrogate them later.

Focusing her ire on the approaching Roadkeepers, Renae spun a slumber enhancement aimed to catch both of them and their mistress in its radius.

Casting Sleep. DC 17 vs. Will if targets are human or share a human sub-type. It's DC 16 if they do not.

10 Ft. Radius Burst should hit the two Roadkeepers's squares and avoid friendly fire but also miss Lullaby.

To say that it took effort for Renae not to give Lullaby and her Roadkeeper cronies an absolutely withering glare would have been an understatement. Renae knew that their "toll" was highway robbery, plan and simple. It was the kind of extortion that was made all the more contemptible by just how brazenly inflated it was.

They are grasping peasants with more pride that sense," a silky-smooth voice whispered in Renae's mind. Pride is the lowest sin of all. Show these fools the consequences of their folly. Dominate them. Break them. Destroy them.

For a moment Renae's hands seemed to have a mind of her own as they started to twist in the way they always did when she was about to cast a spell. Powerful Thassilonian words for enhancement were on the tip of her tongue, ready to be unleashed...

Fortunately, Renae regained her senses and broke her trace before things went to far. She forced her hands to be glued to her quarterstaff while her mouth turned into a hardline for a moment.

No, she thought. She would not be the first to draw blood here. That wasn't her. Not yet anyway.

With her quarterstaff held firmly, Renae joined the others as they stared down the Roadkeepers. "Now, Lullaby," she starts, her ripe with false amiability. "Both of us know that the Roadkeepers aren't so foolhardy as to demand such exuberant tolls. Perhaps you think us so weak as to be unable to defend ourselves against banditry," she asks the robber causally before her voice takes a much serious tone. "That is very much not true, I'm afraid. I suggest you leave us be, or better yet, find another occupation that doesn't demand you act like a schoolyard bully. It's beneath even you, and more besides, the Cove deserves better. This doesn't have to end in blood unless you make it so."

Oh dear. This boat ride just became rather awkward, Renae muses to herself as the others desperately tried to salvage the situation. Though Henric and Kiley looked to have situation in hand, Renae didn't see the harm of adding her voice to smoothing over Hal's faux pas.

Kiley:
As they leave Conrel's, Renae thinks she see's some discomfort on Kiley's face. Ultimately, though, she concludes that she's just imagining it.

Renae led the way to Hallen's Ferry. It was the best way for them to get past the sometimes tumultuous Chavali River and into the Churlwood without undue hardship. Once there the wizard greeted Hallen respectful and answered the old woman's question.

"Correct. It's just the five of us and our donkey."

Renae looked at Hal strangely before eventually giving him an appreciative nod. "Thank you, Hal. The divine magics that cleric's such as yourself channel are not without intellectual and philosophical complexities, but it is good all the same to hear that you appreciate the arcane sciences and all the work that goes in understanding them."

With Henric declining the slippers as well, the wizard shrugged as everyone seemed content to do without them. "Well, if no one is interested we can always sell the slippers at the shop along with the silverware. Enchanted items fetch a high price on the market and I'm sure Conrel's would be willing to buy one.

With that said, Renae returned to walking to the aforementioned shop.

With 1,120 in gp if we sell the shoes (keep in mind that Henric or Hal may still want it) we can not only buy a donkey, which is surprisingly only 8 gp apparently, but also some of the more expensive items on the list like one wand of CLW (750 gp) and at least two potions of CLW (50 gp each). The cost of the feed, food and firewood are negligible and the two medium tents (if Stryn is sticking to roughing it) is 30 gp together.

So, that's around 232 gp remaining, give a few gold for the rest of the minor materials. I'd say that we split the likely 230 remaining gp with each other to buy whatever things we may want personally. Should be about 46, if my math is right.

Renae made a sigh of relief as her divinations revealed the slippers to not be haunted at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. "They could have been, Renae tells Kiley with a faux grave tone before quickly making an sly grin. "Fortunately for us, though, they are not.

The wizard causally took one of the slippers and held it up for closer examination. As she did, she begun to describe the slippers effects with notable interest. "They are enchanted, yes, but their transmutative effects are beneficial. Wearing these you can maneuver around any hazardous terrain without impairment. Jagged rocks, thorns, slippery floors, etc. They don't appear to have much of magical strength, though, so I doubt you'll be able to enjoy such an effect for more than ten minutes a day."

Renae handed the slipper back to Kiley. "Still, I imagine those will be of great help during a fight. Any takers?"

Renae doesn't really move around that much in combat if she can help it so she's not interested in the slippers.

Renae gave a Kiley a curious look as she wondered why the other woman was suddenly blushing. She shrugged and decided to pretend not to notice Kiley's embrassment.

"Well, if Stryn did grab the silverware than you may not even have to part with them anyway."

When Kiley puts the on red slippers Renae's eyes rise in alarm. "Wait!" she says urgently, before moving to where she is seated. "There's an off-chance that those slippers have been enchanted or even corrupted by the spirits in the Wreck. It's best that we scry them before putting them on."

Renae hadn't prepared the spell for the day, but with the aid of her ring she was able to conjure the magic necessarily to cast a minor divination spell on the slippers. With a few words of Thassilonian and her ring glowing softy, Renae examined the slippers for anything noteworthy.

As the group moved to the general store, Renae felt a tug on her sleeve and noticed that Kiley wished to speak with her.

Kiley:
"Of course, I'll help," she tells her, before immediately going into her robes and pulling out a gold piece from a pouch. "I think one gold piece should be enough for some sturdy boots, a cloak and a decent jacket, but if you have some clothes to sell than maybe we can get something more endurable at Conrel's. What kind of outfits do you have?"

After her chat with Kiley, Renae began to list off some things they may be. "Hmm. Rations for a day or two in the wilds. Animal repellent. Some acid or alchemist's fire in case of swarms. Also, a large tent would do nicely, though, I suppose we could rough it with only bedrolls. Oh! And crossbow bolts! I wasted so many of them in the Wreck and... Wait!" The wizard suddenly turned towards Styrn. "You found some silverwave in the Wreck, did you not? How much do you think all of it was worth?"

If I remember correctly, the silverware and a couple other items Stryn found were worth about 130 gp altogether. Should be more than enough for whatever we buy.

Renae simply looked at Stryn for a moment, her mind entirely somewhere else, before she causally passed her untouched food to him. It's all yours, Stryn. My hunger has suddenly left me I'm afraid and you're right that it would be a pity to let this go to waste."

With that bit of awkwardness over, Renae's mind returned to their plans. Yes, going after the dwarves should be our priority. I'm not entirely sold on you going into lion's den, though, Stryn, but scouting the goblin camp is prudent."

The wizard paused and caressed her chin as she thought of the group's remaining needs. "As for the actual trek through the Churlwood, I agree that purchasing some camping gear would be the best course. Even if this Stone House isn't that much of a journey to get to, its entirely possible that we may be sidetrack by any number of things and suddenly need to spend the night in the woods.

Renae flashed the group a coy smile as she reached the end. Which means a shopping trip to Conrel’s General Store is in order.

Renae took in Kiley's words as she told her story, having not even bothered to touch her food. She knew part of the story but not all of it. Stryn and Henric more or less said everything Renae wanted to but the wizard felt compelled to do something.

She stretched out her hand and touched Kiley's shoulder. "Your not the only one whose had to escape from shiftless bastards that just wanted to use you, Kiley," she says with barely controlled bitterness. "But you're right. You don't have to worry about them with us by your side. Come what may."

"Well, let's hope that said 'slimeball' learned a lesson that day," she told Kiley with a knowing grin. "After all, one should never discount the strength of a women scorned or just plain annoyed."

With Kolton off and away, and Hal apparently back from his odd climbing trip, Renae spoke to the rest of the party. "We were already planning on venturing into the Churlwood, so I don't why we couldn't add finding these dwarves to our list of concerns."

Her voice grew more serious when she considered the wider implications of their mission beyond goodwill and coin. "Besides, the town may need those weapons if the gangs, cultists, and whatever else is lurking tries to attack it."

She sighed sadly at the thought. She didn't like the idea that the whole town (including her parents) would need to be armed in case of the worst. Such a possibly would surely be a catastrophe, which gave Renae all the more cause to stop whatever was going in the Churlwood and Peacock Manor before things could escalate to such a disastrous point.

"Well, I suppose we best make a move on to the Guardhouse. I'm sure Thort could give us some information on the dwarves and these Bramblemouth goblins."

When Kolton showed his weathered face and hailed she was rather glad for the sudden distraction. Better a chat with Kolton than her mind thinking about about terrifying ghosts or her friend in the nude.

"Of course, Kolton," she answered kindly. Kolton may have been a bum, but he was also a former adventurer and Renae knew him to be a man blessed with a decent heart if not a lot of sense.

With Stryn leading the way they were able to find an always still terrified Kiley quickly. "We need to her some time, Renae said sadly. The wizard desperately wanted to console her, but wasn't sure that Kiley was even in a state that she'd be able to listen to her words or respond positively to her touch. Renae looked at the door Stryn and Henric were about to enter and the stairs that Kiley had just ran down. It didn't take her long to make up her mind on where she wanted to go. "We need to find Kiley first, she urged the others, pointing down the path Kiley took.

"The poltergeist won't follow us and Sir Roderic has already given us clues to where we did to go next. Making sure that Kiley doesn't get hurt again or taken advantage in her current state should be our priority. We own that to her."

Renae wasn't sure that her compatriots would follow but she was already moving down the stairs to the first floor in search of Kiley either way.

Distracted by a fleeing Kiley, Renae had forgotten all about their vials of holy water. "If we apply the vials directly on the poltergeist than perhaps we could dispel the spirit from here..." the wizard answered Hal hesitantly. She didn't like the idea of having to fight more undead while also looking out for a terrified Kiley who very well could hurt yourself again while running away.

"... but I think Stryn has the right of it. If were lucky we won't even have to have that fight if the poltergeist stays within its room."

A shame about the Protection From Evil not working on fear, but I'll stick to the action. It's what Renae would do IC effective or not.

Even though the abjuration spell doesn't dispel Kiley's panic, Renae at knows that it should at least ward her from whatever else the poltergeist might quite literally throw at her. She can't do the same for all the others, but she can give them another form of help.

"Everyone!" she screams from the stairs. That's a poltergeist in there. Physical attacks won't harm it. Only magic weapons and spells, and then there's a chance they'll just go right through it too. Renae pauses for a moment trying to think of how they'll be able to fight the spirit with Kiley still in a panic and Stryn's weapons useless. "Henric and I can hit it with our spells but Hal divine magic is probably our best bet here. Unless we want to retreat?"
