I haven't read The King in Yellow, but I have read The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, by H.P. Lovecraft, which obviously served as the inspiration for Book 3. It describes the Dreamlands, as well as zoogs, night-gaunts, gugs and bholes. Ghouls feature prominently, as the protagonist, Randolph Carter, is friends with them!

I can only think of one campaign that I played that started at higher than 1st level, and that one wasn't Pathfinder.

I personally enjoy the first level experience. I would feel that I was missing out if I started at 3rd lvl.

Some of ideas:

A high strength bard (you could use reach tactics with a longspear if you wanted).

A high strength shaman using reach tactics. Note that you don't need high Cha to be decent at diplomacy, as long as you max out your skill ranks (and have it as a class skill). My desert half-orc Speaker for the Past shaman has 8 Cha, and acts as the party face. If the armor thing is a big deal for you, a Speaker for the Past can take the Spirit Shield revelation (at 4th lvl).

A high strength Investigator with the Student of Philosophy trait (can use Int for Diplomacy).

Resource management helps ensure that you don't run out of Battle Dance — I try to avoid using it for easier encounters.

At 5th lvl, with Cat's Grace, Heroism, Battle Dance, a masterwork weapon and Arcane Strike, I will be +17 to hit, for 1d4+12 damage.

Lubella spent the evening chatting with the patrons of the Tooth and Nail, looking for information about where she could find the prisoner numbers.

Diplomacy (gather information): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

As the evening wore on, she got lucky, befriending a disgruntled clerk who had access to prisoner rolls. A few drinks, and look at a notebook 'accidentally' left open got her the information she needed.

She returned to the Tooth and Nail just before closing time. "I got the prisoner numbers!", she whispered excitedly to her comrades, showing them a scrap of paper with the numbers scrawled on it:

Benjen Preveau 2119
Hortense Lierre 2120
Ilsani Aberveen 2125
Kasston Auruda 2126

She replied to Setrona, "No, we haven't lined up a place to stay the night. We'll have to rough it and hole up in an abandoned building."

@OP: I think you should ask yourself: Why do I want to play with these people?

They're not your friends, IMHO — that's not how real friends behave. The fact that you've played with them for several years is not a reason to continue — that would be falling for the sunk cost fallacy.

Milo walked with the two humans, pulling the hood of his cloak over his head to stay dry. He got the feeling that something terrible had happened to those Osveta had cared about, but decided not to pry. She'll talk about it when she's ready.

He didn't reply to Pollo, instead trudging along in silence. The man was young, and didn't know what he didn't know. Wait till you've lost a friend or two.

Milo answered Pollo, "My grandad taught that to me; I don't remember how all the verses go. Okay, here's another one:"

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

On the merits of fighting for it's own sake, he commented darkly, "Sometimes, past the pain is death! And for those left behind, grief."

Milo walked along next to the wagon, singing to himself,

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

From The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Milo may well take Bard Dedication at 2nd lvl.

When one of the Ulfen twins called out for food, Milo cried, "Someone wake up the cook! The natives are getting restless out here!"

Lubella sat down beside Fhingle and replied, "It will be quite a while yet before we're ready to challenge Barzillai Thrune directly. We need to prepare carefully, building up our strength, and weakening his position."

She had devoted considerable thought to the matter, and outlined her general thinking in more detail.

"Our first objective is to build our support within Kintargo. I want to provide social services to the poor, starting in the Devil's Nursery. We gained a lot of goodwill there, when we stopped the killings by a gang of evil fey called 'tooth fairies'. I'm thinking the next step is to start making house calls to sick residents; our contact Zea should be able to help us out there.

"We should try to make contact with the members of the Order of the Torrent — they could prove valuable allies. We'll also need to boost our support among the merchants, tradespeople, and nobles where possible.

"Sometime soon, we're going to need a new headquarters, on the other side of the river. The Wasp's Nest is too small, not secure enough, and we have to cross the bridge way too much.

"After we've built up our support inside Kintargo, we need to make some regional allies in Ravounel. We want to block the Menador Gap, so our rebellion won't just be crushed by a relief army from the rest of Chelliax. We'll also need to figure out how to defend against the Chellish navy

"Once we've done all that, only then will we be ready to directly assault Thrune, and the Temple of Asmodeus."

Don't forget that Theo can try make a full-round DC 25 concentration check (which doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity) to wake up from the dream. Each 2d6 damage accepted reduces the DC by one. I don't know if being grappled/swallowed makes a difference or not.

Traits: Missing Child (campaign trait), Student of Philosophy
1. Grasping Tail (houserule: one extra feat at 1st), Weapon Finesse (Inspired Blade bonus feat), Weapon Focus (Rapier) (Inspired Blade bonus feat), Fencing Grace
3. Great Fortitude
4. Investigator Talent: Alchemist Discovery (Mutagen)
5. Extra Investigator Talent: (Expanded Inspiration)
6. Investigator Talent: Quick Study
7. Extra Investigator Talent: Alchemist Discovery (Infusion)
8. Investigator Talent: Amazing Inspiration
9. Extra Investigator Talent: Rogue Talent (Rogue Crawl)
10. Investigator Talent: Combat Inspiration

Some explanation: we're using fumble rules, which had made Grasping Tail very helpful for picking up my dropped rapier (I always seem to roll drop weapon)! Rogue Crawl is for when I fall prone from a fumble: 5ft crawl away before standing up.

4th lvl is big jump in power, gaining Mutagen for a +4 alchemical bonus to dexterity, plus a +2 alchemical bonus to natural armor. In addition, the Barkskin extract is a good, long-lasting buff. Once you can afford some good potions, Alchemical Allocation is great.

Mara figured it was going to be a challenge to cure Ellery of his paranoia. She was going to have to gain his trust before she could even start to treat his affliction. She commented to him, "Rowan seems to be doing a lot better the last few days. I'm glad he's back to his old tipsy self, as opposed to his passed-out drunk state. He had me worried there for a bit.

"I think the Ritual was traumatizing for a lot of people. He tried to deal with it by self-medicating with alcohol, which wasn't working out very well. I'm glad I was able to help him recover.

"Theo was affected differently. In his case, the mental shock made it hard for him to concentrate. His mind was racing, and it took quite a while to help him relax enough return to normal. Well normal for him, anyway!

"If you're feeling out of sorts, I could help you feel more at ease, too. It's a gradual process, though; mental trauma is slower to heal than physical trauma. Anyway, I just want you to know that I'm here, if there's something you think I could do that would be beneficial."

She felt that she'd said enough for now, and let the matter drop for the moment.

Hexing and chanting doesn't combine very well with a melee shaman (you can't full attack, and you're almost immobile while doing it).

I'm playing a longspear-wielding melee shaman in Ironfang Invasion (human flame spirit). As you get into the double digit levels, I've found you need all the hit points you can get. I would recommend a 14 constitution and the Toughness feat. I took Heavy Armor Proficiency, and am wearing full plate (the flame spirit Cinder Dance hex helps with mobility). Since I was planning on full plate from the start, I have only 12 dex.

I like the Healing Hex — you always have healing in hand that doesn't provoke or require a concentration check (supernatural ability). You can heal yourself when you're grappled if you need to.

This doesn't address your specific issue, but a Speaker for the Past Shaman is very helpful when the GM likes to ambush the party; once you get to 7th lvl, you can Haste the party in the enemy surprise round. Temporal Celerity allows you to act in the enemy surprise round, and Speed or Slow time gives you Haste (as a Supernatural ability, so you don't provoke, and concentration checks aren't required).

Lubella stopped when the book flew off the shelf. It seemed that her fears of an invisible guardian stationed here by the Asmodeans were unfounded. This seemed more in keeping with some sort of construct, made my the Archivists.

"We are friends of Lady Portia Victocora's son. We had hoped to find her here unharmed, but alas, that was not to be. Do you know if any of the Order survived? If some have been taken prisoner, we might be able to rescue them.

"We wish to pass through this library, and punish those responsible for this destruction. We understand that they have taken over some chambers near here (perhaps beyond the doors), and turned them into something called the Many Steps Monastery. A reach weapon helps in combat. Later on, Boots of Striding and Springing can increase your speed.

I am playing a full plate wearing Flame Spirit Shaman in Ironfang Invasion (spent a feat on Heavy Armor Proficiency at 3rd lvl). The Cinder Dance Hex increased his speed, and now that he's higher level, he travels via Overland Flight. In combat, he uses reach tactics with a longspear. He started with 18 Str, so carrying capacity hasn't been a problem.
