Playtest Character 2

Olise blinks her eyes rapidly. "My goodness, barkeep! What is in this shandy? I'm seeing spots all of a sudden!"


Playtest Character 2

Warm sunlight streams through the open doorway of the Cottonseed Lodge as a young halfling woman wearing the simple attire of a farm girl walks in. Her swift gait has a lilt to it, and she has a sincere smile on her dirt-smudged face.

As the halfling finds a stool at the bar she can safely get up into, she asks the barkeep for a shandy. "I love the springtime, don't you," she asks. "There's always so many exciting things to look forward to! Like summers working the fields, and afternoons down by the river! Oh! And I hear there's a new group in the Society called the Verdant Wheel that sound like great people! Of course, not everybody is interested in traveling with the Society just to see what the natural world is like in other parts of the world, but that won't make me and Maizy enjoy it any less. Will it, Maizy?"

A sentient ear of corn--apparently some variety of leshy--pops up from over Olise's shoulder and lets out a high-pitched peep of agreement.

Olise giggles and turns back to the barkeep, "Let's just hope when the Verdant Wheel really gets rolling, they haven't gotten rid of leshy familiars, huh?"


Playtest Character 2

"Yes," Olise says softly, curiously turning over the strange journal, "And it looks like we found something else interesting." She flips open the book to the first page and tries to read what the book is about.

"Ah, come on," Olise moans, "I was going to bring the heat! Isn't there anything else to fight? Like a big rat or something?"

Olise lays and shimmering hand upon Biffin's shoulder, "Go on, Biffin, hit that horrifying thing! Then back up a step if could. I'm gonna bring the fire!"

Action 1+2: Verbal and Somatic actions to cast Guidance on Biffin. +1 to your next attack!
Action 3: Stride back 5 feet

Can you lovely folks help me out and make sure you're updating your positions on the map linked in the GM's header? I'm hoping to set up Burning Hands for some time in this combat and would like to avoid blasting as many of you as I can.
At present, if Biffin moves straight away from the creature 5 ft or right behind Vardigas, I should be able to flame on without hurting any allies.

Olise hurries in after her companions and takes up a position behind the stout dwarf, Biffin. She peers over his shoulder and takes a horrified glimpse at the hobgoblin with the unnatural looking tongue. What is that thing, she wonders, Doesn't seem like any kind of hobgoblin I've ever heard of.

Actions 1 and 2: Stride my full 50 feet to get behind Biffin.
I'd like to use my third action to attempt an identification roll, but I'm not sure what skill to use. Please use the roll below and add the appropriate modifier listed here:

"Wha-?! What are you doing to that goblin?! Put him down, right now!" Olise's small voice rings out across the small room as she catches sight of the horrifying scene playing out before her. "Come on, guys! Let's get this monster, no matter what he is!"

Olise straightens her dress and dismisses Penelope. "Well! There certainly were quite a few goblins in these tunnels weren't there? Let's see, should we head back up and follow the corridor a little further down?"

"Alright, good job, Penelope! Do it again!" Olise urges on her summoned pony, which strikes out at the pyro twice. She moves into the room to join the rest of her group.

Playtest Character 2

Olise stands with her hands ready to weave the spell to call an animal ally into existence. As soon as an opening appears, she begins the spell. With much focus and a few large beads of sweat, the halfling calls into being the mortal enemy of goblins everywhere: Penelope the Pony!

All 3 Actions: Cast Summon Natures Ally to summon a pony!

Penelope materializes directly in front of the goblin pyro and immediately strikes at the creature with her hooves.

Playtest Character 2

Olise moves ahead and hustles down the stairs. Before she reaches the bottom, though, she begins chanting and turning her hands, one over the other, as if she were forming a ball out of clay. As she chants and molds, a brilliant green little orb appears and starts to grow. In no time, the orb is the size of an apple, and Olise tosses it at the goblin in red rags.

"Wait, isn't the barbarian supposed to do that," Olise calls out in surprise.

I took the liberty of arranging us in the corridor outside the cavern. GM or players, please adjust as you feel is right.

"Um...maybe we should try the other door," Olise offers as two of her companions struggle to get through the southern door. She heads over to the eastern door and takes a quick look to see if there's anything strange about it.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Olise laughs at Biffin's haste and exuberance. "Well that's one way to work through a dungeon," she giggles.

Ping!

Olise eyes the idol with suspicion. "That's Lamashtu. Be careful with that, Xune. It might be dangerous. Let me see." Olise waves around her holly and mistletoe, and an imperceptible aura of magic radiates around her before bouncing back with any magical signals in the immediate vicinity.

@GM: I know. If it was long enough, I was gonna test out the rules for fatigue to see how that goes for my character. Gotta kick the tires!

"Oh my! This water looks awful," Olise exclaims as she peers over the stagnant pool. "And from such a wonderful fountain! How sad."

Perception in water: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13


Playtest Character 2

"Yipe! Okay, I'm getting out of here. Just thought I'd check things out. Never know where this Drakus stowed his treasures." Olise backs out of the room and swipes the sweat from her brow. "Whew! That was crazy," she says. "Well, now that's done, let's move on."

For the coming Exploration mode, Olise will be casting dancing lights and concentrating to move the lights along with the group.


Playtest Character 2

Olise smiles and nods her head, "You're welcome, Biffin! I hope they help. Now, how about these weird fungi..." She moves further along in the chamber to investigate the fungus room again. She moves in as close as she dares, then works to brush aside the tendrils and stalks in such a way as not to disturb them. Before she begins, she casts a spell to give herself guidance in the attempt.

Action 1+2: Somatic and Verbal action to cast Guidance
Action 3: Interact action to attempt to disable the spores

Survival, Guidance: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 1 = 11
I think I can do better. I'd like to use my Lucky Halfling ancestry feat to reroll that skill check.

Then again, I could always do worse...

Playtest Character 2

GM: Yeah, it actually seems helpful now that your ability score gets added in!
Andrus: I was just having the same thought, but wanted to make sure nobody had an objection to me sitting around for 40 minutes while I magicify some berries. :D

If no one objects to her taking the time, Olise sits down on the cave floor and has Maizy hop down off her pack. "Maizy," she says to the sentient ear of corn, "Could you please lend us some kernels?"

Corn-based body horror:
The leshy looks suspiciously at the others at first, but soon shrugs her leafy shoulders and plucks four kernels from near the top of her body, leaving a gap in the side of her head like the smile of person with poor dental hygiene. A shimmering golden-green light spills out from the gap, revealing the magic that animates and sustains the leshy. With a little squeak of a sigh, Maizy teeters on her feet and leans against Olise for support.

"Thank you, Maizy! That's all I'll need for today. Why don't you hope back up in my pack and relax for a bit?" The corn obliges, and Olise begins chanting and waving her hands over the kernels she has set out before her.

A little over half an hour later, Olise hands four glowing golden kernels of corn to her new friends. "Here you go! You guys keep these. I probably won't be getting too close to the fighting from now on. Eat those whenever you feel hurt, and Maizy's magic will heal you right up!"


Playtest Character 2

"Huh! Okay. Well, there are some creepy nasty fungi in the next room. I think I know how to deal with those, but they seem pretty aggressive. Should I check it out?" Olise begins moving toward the last side chamber, then stops suddenly. "Oh! By the way, if anybody needs any more healing, I brought along some really great berries that I can magic up so that they can help! Just give me a few minutes okay?"

If we're willing to wait the 10 minutes, Olise will cast goodberry to create 1 berry which, when eaten with an Interact action, gives as much nourishment as a square meal for a typical human and restores 1d4 Hit Points plus my spellcasting ability modifier (4).


Playtest Character 2

"Great work, Xune! I knew you'd finish the job." Olise smiles and bounces on her toes as the last of the bugs flees from Biffin. "Now, where were we? Oh! Let's see what's going on with those goblins in there!"

Olise moves to the next chamber and reaches out for any signs of magic in the area.

Olise cheers as Andrus fells another of the centipedes. Inspired by his valor, she rushes in behind the grayish centipede and jabs at it with her staff. "Bad bug! Stop hurting my friends!" She then steps aside to let Xune in. "Come on, Xune! Help us take this one out!"

Action 1: Stride 15ft to get in flank with Vardigas
Action 2: Strike with quarterstaff two-handed (grants d8 damage)
Action 3: Step away to open up the flank position for Xune

Olise shakes off the poisonous bite of the centipede, then quickly moves away from the offending creature, but not before slamming her staff into the insect.

Playtest Character 2

Olise concentrates so hard it seems to break the world. After all the effort, a sting of lights appear in the air, and she moves them into the tunnel ahead of her to shed light for her friends.

I was going to work on those checks, but I'm not sure if that would put me too far away from Biffin in case a battle does break out in that lower left room.
In case I had a chance to do those checks prior to whatever ramifications go down with Biffin, I'm going to roll them.

Olise steps into the "motivatimation" room and moves toward the goblins in the niches. "These poor fools. If only they had escaped like you, Talga!"

Medicine (untrained): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Seeing the wounds on the goblins, Olise sighs sadly. "These ones were killed within the last few days. It's pretty easy to see what killed them, too. Look, there's a hole in the neck the size of Big Person's finger! Oh, and they've been completely drained of blood. That's why they look so pale."

After checking on the goblins, Olise moves to the passageway leading to Drakus's room. "Oh! What interesting fungi," she says excitedly as she carefully looks at the coloration and shape of the expansive fungus.

Nature (trained): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Suddenly, Olise jumps back from the fungi lining the walls of the passageway. "This is a mindfog fungus! We could destroy it with fire, but then it would just release a cloud of spores on us, and I can tell you that we don't want that." She passes and thinks for a moment, then goes on, "Then again, if we're careful, we could sort of block its reaction to release the spores. I think I may have some experience that could be helpful with that. Do any of you know anything about surviving in the wild?"

"I'm sorry that had to happen," Olise says to the group's goblin guide. "Maybe we can find a way to convince any other Mudchewers we find that we will help get rid of Drakus, and they'll join us!" Despite her optimism, Olise has little hope that the group will actually manage to convince anyone to turn on the leader they feared.

Resigned to these doubts, she begins to look around at the various burial niches lining the walls.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

"Oh! Look what I found," she calls out at finding a small treasure trove in one of the niches. "An old ring and a magical potion! Andrus, you look like you could use it." After offering the potion to Andrus, Olise turns her attention back to the ring. "Hmm...I wonder if it's magical or something fun like that!" She waggles her fingers and grabs onto her holly and mistletoe as she searches the ring for a magical aura.

Casting Detect Magic with the ring in the area of effect.


Playtest Character 2

Olise brazenly charges into the room and raises a hand toward one of the goblins as she chants and connects to her divine focus once again. Sticky vines seem to sprout from the dirt caked in the lines of her palm and beneath her fingernails. The vines explode from her hands toward the nearby goblin, attempting to wrap up the creature.

Action 1: Move 25 ft
Actions 2+3: Cast tanglefoot vs yellow goblin
Success: The target is entangled. It can attempt an Acrobatics
or Athletics check against your spell DC (14) to remove the
entangled condition (and immobile condition, if necessary).
Critical Success: Per success, and the target immobile as long
as it’s entangled.
Failure: No effect.

Tanglefoot range touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15


Playtest Character 2

Elise moves through the tunnel, reaches out and lightly touches Xune on the forearm. With a mumbled incantation and contact with the small bundle of holly and mistletoe she carries with her, she gives the elf guidance as she continues in the fight.

Action 1: Move 25ft
Action 2+3: Verbal and Somatic casting actions to cast Guidance on Xune, who gains a +1 conditional bonus to one attack roll, Perception check, saving throw, or skill check the target attempts before the duration ends (the start of my next turn). The target chooses which roll to use the bonus on before rolling. If the target uses the bonus, the spell ends. Either way, it’s bolstered (see CRB page 319 - basically means I can't use this on you again today).


Playtest Character 2

Olise cheers excitedly as the slime dissolves into a harmless pile of filth. "Good job, everyone! Maybe next time, I'll manage to do something helpful too. Haha!" She laughs at her own lack of ability to contribute to this fight, knowing that her time to help will come soon enough.

Inspired by the incredible accuracy of her new companions, Olise moves into the room with the slime and draws out her sling. She loads a sling bullet into it and begins to twirl it to prepare an attack.

Action 1: move 25 feet

"Oh," Olise says, suddenly becoming shy as someone asks her a direct question, "Um...well I guess I've always been good with plants and things. Momma and Poppa say I came out of the womb with a green thumb! Well, I was working the fields last autumn and I just felt really drawn to this one little corner where a cornstalk had been planted just a little bit out of the row. I kept taking care of it, feeding it special things, watering it really carefully. And then, well I guess you could say my powers just kind of took hold. And then one of the ears, the biggest on the stalk, just popped off and there she was!" Maizy squeaks affirmatively, then launches into a series of squeaks and chirrups as if she were continuing the story. "Now Maizy, you don't have to tell them that part of the story," Olise objects to her companion. "Sorry, she can have a bit of a mouth on her sometimes."

Check page 287, at the end of the Animal Companions section. Familiars' stats are basically just based on their master's key ability score. You can see Maizy's stats in a spoiler on my profile if you care to look.


Playtest Character 2

Olise listens to the conversation with great concern, and exclaims as the goblin reaches the end of its tale, "Oh! He drank the head goblin's blood? How horrible! Well I think we could certainly do something about that, eh Maizy?"

Just then, an ear of corn pops up from inside the top of Olise's backpack, still encased in its leaves. It lets out a muffled squeak, and Olise giggles. "Oh Maizy, there's no need to be afraid. These people will be our friends. They'll keep you safe." The leaves peel down the front of the cob, revealing that the kernels are arranged in a somewhat unusual patter. They are fairly normal for the first few inches, but then there appear to be two dense clusters over top two empty spots, and below those is a wide space where the kernels are packed together to form a curving line like a smile. The leaves unfold the rest of the way suddenly and the corn hops up onto the leaves extended beneath itself like two thin little legs, and two more leaves reach out from the side like a pair of arms. The corn stands on Olise's shoulder and lets out another squeak.

"Maizy says hello, everyone. On, I should clarify, Maizy is my...oh, what was that word again...ah! My familiar! She's a leshy, and she's here to help just like the rest of us."

With introductions complete, Olise and Maisy follow the others as Keleri leads them to the cellar, then as her goblin servant(?) guides them through the tunnels. She smiles happily as the party makes their way along and whispers to Maizy, "Did you hear that, Maizy? We're going to catch a star and defeat an evil blood-sucking beast! It's just like in the stories Poppa and Momma used to tell us kids when we were little. How exciting!"


Playtest Character 2

From behind the massive half-elf and his even larger axe, a small young woman wearing a plain, well-worn dress emerges. She smiles happily at her large predecessor's exuberant entrance, then moves toward Keleri in her turn. "Hel-lo, Keleri dear," the halfling says as she reaches out a dirt-covered hand toward their host. She spots the dirt and her eyes go wide and her deep tan complexion takes on a ruddier shade as she blushes. After wiping the dirt of quickly on her dress, she reaches out again and grasps Keleri's hand. "It's so good of you to write! Poppa and Momma said to tell you hello too. They meant to send me along with Autumn--you remember our little pony--and to send some of this year's harvest, but then Autumn's ankle took a turn and...oh, sorry dear, I seem to be taking up all your attention!"

The halfling woman--barely an adult to those who can perceive such things--drops Keleri's hand and backs up a step before introducing herself to the room, "It's very nice to meet you! My name is Olise Goldear." She adds in a curtsy, and blushes again as she wonders if that was what she was supposed to do.
