I think that "Trip" is a bit to easy to pull off. When I DM i hate to pit any monster against the PCs that can be tripped. once the PCs get the monster down it seems like it's all over. mostly it is the monk that causes this problem for me.

ah, thanks for the correction. my version of mithral Bplate was too good to be true.

(plz correct me if i'm wrong) mithral breastplate has 0 armor check penalty. that means you don't even really need to be proficient with it.

basic breastplate has armor check penalty of -4, masterwork (all mithral armor is masterwork) decreases the penalty by 1, and mithral knocks of the other -3. right? or does the -3 reduction from mithral include the Masterwork reduction?

i know this is off topic, but i bring it up as an alternative to heavy armor.

a correction to what i just said:

4. it goes through DR better because the reduction is only applied once. a number of smaller attacks runs a higher risk of being completely nullified by DR.

IMHO one big attack is better than a lot of smaller ones because:

1. you can do more damage when you charge with it, or just plain old move and attack
2. the attack bonus tends to be significantly higher
3. it is less dice to roll, therefore the game runs quicker
4. it goes through DR better (because it tends to do more damage per attack)
5. it is more powerful when used for attacks of opportunity

I know there are benefits to having many attacks, i just think there are more benefits to one big attack

I know I'm not the first on this thread to say this, but it is worth repeating: a Bastard sword is a martial weapon when used with 2 hands, and you need "martial weapon proficiency: Bastard sword" to use it 2 handed. Open and shut case.

I agree that the two swords are similar, that is why they are listed in the same group for the fighters "weapon training" ability (PF core rulebook page 56), but only a martial scholar like a fighter knows how to take advantage of the similarity.

Bastard swords are overrated anyway, it rolls 1 damage higher, on average, than a longsword. Just grab your longsword with 2 hands.
