CLASS ABILITIES:
----------------------

Advice (Ex): A sensei's advice is identical to bardic performance (using oratory), allowing him to inspire courage at 1st level, inspire competence at 3rd level, and inspire greatness at 9th level, as a bard of the sensei's level, usable a total number of rounds per day equal to his level + his Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). This ability replaces flurry of blows, fast movement, and improved evasion.

Barkskin: Replaces Slow Fall. Expend 1 Ki to cast Barkskin on self.

Maneuver Training (Ex): At 3rd level, a monk uses his monk level in place of his base attack bonus when calculating his Combat Maneuver Bonus. Base attack bonuses granted from other classes are unaffected and are added normally.

Ki Pool (Su): At 4th level, a monk gains a pool of ki points, supernatural energy he can use to accomplish amazing feats. The number of points in a monk's ki pool is equal to 1/2 his monk level + his Wisdom modifier. As long as he has at least 1 point in his ki pool, he can make a ki strike. At 4th level, ki strike allows his unarmed attacks to be treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 7th level, his unarmed attacks are also treated as cold iron and silver for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 10th level, his unarmed attacks are also treated as lawful weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 16th level, his unarmed attacks are treated as adamantine weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction and bypassing hardness.

By spending 1 point from his ki pool, a monk can make one additional attack at his highest attack bonus when making a flurry of blows attack. In addition, he can spend 1 point to increase his speed by 20 feet for 1 round. Finally, a monk can spend 1 point from his ki pool to give himself a +4 dodge bonus to AC for 1 round. Each of these powers is activated as a swift action. A monk gains additional powers that consume points from his ki pool as he gains levels.

The ki pool is replenished each morning after 8 hours of rest or meditation; these hours do not need to be consecutive.

High Jump (Ex): At 5th level, a monk adds his level to all Acrobatics checks made to jump, both for vertical jumps and horizontal jumps. In addition, he always counts as having a running start when making jump checks using Acrobatics. By spending 1 point from his ki pool as a swift action, a monk gains a +20 bonus on Acrobatics checks made to jump for 1 round.

Ki Mystic (Su): At 3rd level, a ki mystic gains a pool of ki points equal to his Wisdom modifier. The pool increases to 1/2 his monk level + his Wisdom modifier + 2 at level 4. If the monk has at least 1 point of ki in his ki pool, he gains a +2 bonus on all Knowledge skill checks. As a swift action, the monk can spend 1 ki point immediately before making an ability, or skill check to gain a +4 insight bonus on the check. This ability replaces still mind.

Mystic Insight (Su): At 5th level, a ki mystic becomes apt at giving just the right word of advice in just the nick of time. As an immediate action, the monk can spend 2 ki points to grant an ally within 30 feet the ability to reroll a single attack roll or saving throw. The ally must be able to hear the monk to gain the reroll benefit. This ability replaces purity of body.

Cloak of Elvenkind

Backstory:

Background and Character Concept:

1. For over a decade Nau has served the imperial family as a tutor for their children. He is famous for his patience, the breadth of his knowledge, and his circumspection as a courtier. He is well liked at court.

2. Nau believes that he is above the rivalry between the Orders, but it is more that he see the value of the teachings of the Emerald Tortoise. He hopes to find enlightenment by perfecting mind and spirit. There are those within both Orders who question the value of this heterodoxy and his focus on the esoteric arts at the expense of the more physical disciplines. For all his talk of harmony between the orders, Nau believes that those who do not seek enlightenment are wasting their potential.

3. One of Nau's favorite aphorisms is "those who cannot learn, cannot teach." He is radically open to new ways to improve his mind and spirit regardless of their provenance. This openness includes a willingness to learn from both his students and the world around him.

4. Nau fell in love with the elven liaison to the imperial family, Calathel. The elven ambassador return's Nau's affections. It was Calathel who made Nau his Cloak of Elvenkind.

5. The two men keep their affair a secret because Nau does not want to lose his appointment as a tutor to the imperial family because his paramour might have "undue influence" on his charges' education through him.

Goals:

1. Nau wants to progress towards enlightenment.

2. He also wants to find some balance between his duties as a tutor and his affair with Calathel, which honors them both. But at the moment, Nau chooses his duties over his heart.

Secrets:

1. As an intimate of the imperial family and a guardian of their children, Nau is a repository of secrets and scandals concerning them. He takes pride in his circumspection concerning those secrets.

2. Unbeknownst to Nau, Calathel seduced the tutor originally for political gain, but has recently begun to develop genuine feelings for him. The elven ambassador feels rather conflicted about the entire matter.

Connections:

1. Calathel, Nau's lover and elven ambassador, is a wizard who has some skill with enchanting magical objects. He is handsome, clever, and rather manipulative, though few are aware of the extent of the latter two qualities. He presents himself with charm and apparent openness.

2. Itome, the Hidden Pearl, is a princess of the imperial family is one of Nau's greatest supporters at court. She and her twin brother, Zhong, have recently come of age, but cares deeply for the tutor who basically raised her. She is aware of her twin's designs on Nau and opposes them.

3. Zhong, the Demon Tiger, is a prince of the imperial family and the twin brother of Itome. He is also Nau's greatest disappointment. The tutor identified the prince's sadistic and sociopathic tendencies early in his life, and then paid special attention to the twin's education in hopes to ameliorate these antisocial tendencies. Zhong grew to crave this attention as a sign of his superiority. When he was sixteen, Zhong tried to seduce Nau but was gently rebuffed. Zhong did not take this rejection well, and turned to the teachings of the Opal Ghosts, who lessons resonated with him. Zhong grew into a feared warrior (Antipaladin/Monk (Kata Master)) who has neither forgotten nor forgiven his tutor. He intends to break and own Nau.

Quirks, Memories, and Mannerisms:

1. Nau is very genteel and takes pride in the civilization that his comportment represents.

2. Nau remembers the day when he left his temple at age 20 to come tutor the imperial children as the happiest day of his life.

3. Nau's favorite fruit is the peach and often teaches his charges beneath one in the imperial gardens.

Appearance:

Ht: 5' 9"
Wt: 155 lbs
Age: 32
