About Marcellano Gallenica

Backstory:
Marcellano Gallenica was born into the midst of a large family of mixed Varisian and Chelaxian heritage in the freedom-loving, communally minded town of Abken in rural Varisia. Always an inquisitive child, he was blessed in such a setting to encounter many willing teachers, from the Varisian wanderer who gave him his first magic bauble to the men and women of the town who taught him about the properties of herbs, the stories of history, and the nature of people. His childhood was relatively unremarkable, and once he was big enough, he joined in the normal town duties--serving on the militia, tending the fields, and so forth--as willingly as anyone else.

When he was nineteen, though, Marcellano began to grow restless, and to wonder whether he would ever be able to learn more than the rough magic his family (both nuclear and, in a town like Abken, "extended") could teach him. It took some convincing, but finally he managed to talk his the town elders into giving him their blessing to leave and study at the Acadamae in Korvosa, the nearest city of any size. Marcellano found life in Korvosa easy enough, but disliked the Acadamae--its studies were, he felt, hidebound, conservative ideologies passed from teacher to student on the traditional schools of magic and using theory only. He was more interested in the history and full scope of magic--in the ways that it had shaped and touched the world around him, and the ways it could be used to do so again. He was enraptured by stories of mighty Azlanti conjurers and of the so-called 'Runelords' who held so much more power than any ordinary mage.

Barely a year after beginning his studies at the Acadamae, then, Marcellano took ship out of Korvosa for Riddleport to seek access to the Order of Cyphers. It was here that his troubles began: although an apt enough pupil, and quickly accepted as an apprentice member of the order, Marcellano lacked the political and social acumen to negotiate the labyrinthine underbelly of Riddleport, and he soon ran afoul of no less a power than Elias Tammerhawk, the leader of the Order. Marcel, young and foolish as he was, fell in love with one of the prostitutes frequently visited by Tammerhawk, and rather than backing off when he should have, he persisted in becoming her confidante until the two of them were caught in flagrante delicto, and he was forced to flee the town in haste. Since leaving Riddleport, Marcellano's been thrilled to fall in with a group of adventurers who'd made a truly remarkable archaeological find near the unassuming town of Sandpoint...

Marcellano leaves behind both his father (Turio) and mother (Annaliss), as well as one older sister (Jessalin) and two half-orc half-siblings on his mother's side, Adriana and Grumio. Right now, he's driven entirely by his desire for knowledge and learning...and his fear of ever crossing Tammerhawk's path again. The more he learns, though, the more he hopes that one day he'll be able to return to Riddleport and throw his success in the faces of the rest of the Order.

TRAIT
Militia Veteran: Growing up in the small, independence-minded town of Abken, Marcel had to do his part as much as anyone else, and received basic militia training with the other young people. He gains a +1 trait bonus to Ride, and it is a class skill for him.
Eldritch Delver: Marcellano's been involved in various dubious archaeological exploits over the years, and is accustomed to operating underground. The tight spots he's found himself in led his focus into teleportation magic. He gains a +1 trait bonus to K (Dungeoneering), and casts spells of the teleportation subschool as 1 caster level higher.
Scholar of the Ancients: For the past couple years, Marcel has been obsessed with uncovering the history of the Varisian region and peoples, seeking in part to establish a single continuity for the region. He gains a +1 trait bonus to K (Arcana) and K (History), and started play speaking Thassilonian.

Cypher Lore: Extended Scroll: As a swift action, Marcellano can double the duration of any spell he reads from a scroll as if the spell was affected by Extend Spell. He can do this a number of times per day equal to 1/3 his Cyphermage level (1).
Cypher Lore: Enhance Scroll: As a swift action, Marcellano can cause any scroll that he uses to function at his caster level, rather than the scroll's. He can do this a number of times per day equal to one-third his cyphermage level (min. 1).
Cypher Lore: Defensive Scrollcaster: Marcellano gains a +4 bonus on concentration checks to cast spells defensively when casting spells from scrolls.
Cypher Lore: Swift Scroll: Marcellano does not provoke attacks of opportunity when retrieving a stored scroll. If the cyphermage moves at least 10 feet, he may retrieve a scroll as a free action as part of his move.
Cypher Lore: Swift Scrivener: Marcellano writes extremely quickly, and he can scribe up to two scrolls per day, provided that the total market price of all scrolls scribed that day does not exceed 1000 gp. He also reduces the casting time of all symbol spells to 1 minute.
Familiar: Marcel is rarely seen without his raven familiar, Narcizia. She grants him the Alertness feat as long as she's with him, and can speak crude Common. She can also deliver touch spells.
Arcane School: Conjuration (Teleportation)
School Power: Summoner's Charm: Marcel is a practiced summoner of extra-dimensional agents. Whenever he casts a conjuration (summoning) spell, increase the duration by a number of rounds equal to 1/2 your wizard level (3). This increase is not doubled by Extend Spell. At 20th level, he can change the duration of all summon monster spells to permanent. He can have no more than one summon monster spell made permanent in this way at one time. If he designates another summon monster spell as permanent, the previous spell immediately ends.
School Power: Shift: Marcel has mastered a simple teleportation spell; as a swift action, he can teleport to a nearby space as if using dimension door. This movement does not provoke an attack of opportunity. He must be able to see the space that he is moving into. He cannot take other creatures with him when using this ability (except for familiars). He can move 5 feet for every two wizard levels (25'). He can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + INT (8).

Scribe Scroll (Wizard Bonus): Marcellano can create scrolls of any spell he knows.
Toughness: Marcellano's rough past gives him 3 bonus hit points (+1/HD beyond 3rd).
Improved Initiative: Marcel's quick reflexes give him a +4 bonus on initiative checks.
Cypher Magic: Marcellano has always been drawn to the written word, and he is beginning to suspect that there is inherent power in the runes of the Thassilonian alphabet. He casts spells from scrolls at +1 CL higher than the scroll's caster level (including scrolls he created himself); he also gains a +2 bonus on CL checks to cast a spell from a scroll with a higher CL than his own.
Spell Focus (Conjuration): Every wizard has a specialty, and Marcellano's is calling things forth out of nothingness. He adds +1 to the DCs of any spells of the Conjuration school.
Extend Spell (wizard bonus): Marcellano's esoteric research has led him to a way of making spells more permanent and lasting. When he prepares spells, he can choose to apply this feat to them, making them use a spell slot one level higher than normal but doubling their duration.
Spell Penetration: Marcellano gains a +2 bonus on caster level checks to overcome a creature's spell resistance.
Greater Spell Penetration: Marcellano gains another +2 bonus on caster level checks to overcome a creature's spell resistance.
