About Magnar Runehammer
Magnar was born to one of the dwarven branches of house Garess, and although his parents and siblings had little of the wealth that traditionally went with that name, they did have the traditions and the duties.
He grew up to be a historian, and priest of Torag, and was generally well liked. As dwarves go, Magnar is quite personable, and that made him the priest that was most often relied on for counsil among his peers, even though there were others available who were more obviously shown the god's favor, or who were his elder.
That's also why, when house Garess managed to secure the charter to clear new land, Magnar was a natural choice. He was loyal enough to be dependable, far enough removed from the movers and shakers of the house to be expendable, and a mighty enough warrior that he might succeed, in the end.
Not that the process went entirely smoothly. He had to impress his qualities on several family members at various parties, social functions he'd otherwise have stayed away from and the like.
He even put political pressure on one of his uncles on the human side - but in the end, he was the one chosen, as he wanted it.
He'd lived a quiet life, well into and beyond his prime youth, and now it was time to go make something of himself, some of that history he'd studied for so long.
