For particular events, like the ongoing Outpost convention, the event organizer needs to be informed when a game has been completed, but the organizer is responsible for, and often handles, the reporting.

If you have completed a game that you ran here on the boards under your own event, then you, as the GM, are responsible for reporting the game. Once reported, the game should show up under the "Sessions" tab for the event. The events are listed under the "GM/Event Coordinator" tab und under your "My Organized Play" link within the "My Account" menu here on the boards.

You can check to see if a game for Outpost or another event, including one of your own, has been reported by checking the "Sessions" tab found under your "My Organized Play" link within the "My Account" menu here on the boards. If a game you ran or played does not appear there, then you should contact the organizer for that event to get it properly reported.

If the event is managed by RPGChronicles (like Outpost is), you can also go to the last page and check the Reporting status.

The Data Tracking Form is not used for convention games and it is no used for reporting.

I highly encourage GMs to fill out the Data Tracking Form at the same time they report their games to Paizo as this keeps the tracker up-to-date and makes it easier for the GMs to know if it has been filled out.

The two guards at the checkpoint examine the papers of the rest of party, repeating the warnings about stowing weapons, keeping curfew, and leaving before the papers are set to expire. You are each able to enter into the city without further incident.

Once past the check point at the docks, you are relatively free to travel around within the city. It is evident that Xin-Edasseril is bustling with activity. Yet, the city clearly operates under the weight of oppression. Additional check points, each manned by multiple members of the Emerald Guard, have been set up at natural "choke points" for traffic flowing within the city. Likewise, Emerald Guard patrols, visibly well-armed, can be seen marching through the city with considerable frequency. The residents within the city give the patrols a wide berth. Even when the Emerald Guard is not within their immediate vicinity, the citizens of the city go to length to avoid making direct eye contact with you and other obvious outsiders. They seem almost as weary of their fellow citizens, undoubtedly the result of the Runelord's frequent use of hidden spies and secret police.

The voyage has been a long one and land still is no where in sight. Th crew of this second vessel, The Lightbringer, are the first persons outside those aboard your own vessel, that you have seen in quite some time. They prove, however, to be all business. It is not long before planks are extended between the two vessels and members of the Lightbringer arrive to escape you to the other vessel and below its deck to meet with Valais Durant.

The endless roll of the waves of the Steaming Sea, sends the lanterns that hang from hooks dangling from the deck above in constant sway. Their light illuminating the ship's interior and causing the golden markings on Valais' skin to periodically glisten and gleam. The result is the appearance of movement, like the shimmer of the scales of a passing fish as it darts through the water.

“I need your help for a task that requires both great risk and discretion,” begins Valais as the aasimar woman gestures to the shadows behind her. From the darkness emerges a green-eyed, Varisian man. He flashes a sly grin, which is framed by a thin mustache.

“This is Guaril Karela, a prominent figure among the Sczarni,” she continues. “The Sczarni maintain a smuggling ring, providing freedom to those chafing under the oppression of Belimarius, the Runelord of Envy and ruler of Edasseril. Demand for such services is high,” she pauses and casts a somewhat disdainful glare toward Guaril, “allowing the Sczarni to extract hefty sums from desperate patrons."

“I find the practice rather distasteful,” Valais sighs. “However, collaboration with his operations grants the Radiant Oath some measure of oversight in ensuring proper treatment of the refugees. Further, I have Guaril’s personal assurance that the Sczarni will not demand more in payment than their clients can afford.”

“Transportation’s expensive,” Guaril chimes in. “Not to mention paying off border guards and harbormasters. It’s dangerous work. Certainly, you wouldn’t expect my people to take such risk and not be properly compensated, would you? Or have you forgotten that Belimarius has placed a price on my head?”

“Not the first to do so, I’m sure.” Valais notes dryly, before continuing, “Belimarius and her minions began to suspect Guaril’s intentions the last time he was in Edasseril. Now, they seek not only his head, but those of his known associates, including those among the Pathfinder Society. It is not presently safe for them or Guaril to venture within Edasseril’s borders.”

"As, I believe, none of you happen to be known associates of Guaril," notes Valais, "you should each be well-suited for this mission."

Guaril maintains a charming grin, but his eyes betray a sense of nervousness.

"We do not oppose the visitors staying in our village, if they so wish." Elder Yetu informs Venjo. "And, should they desire to go to the forbidden structure, we will not stop them. But, if the visitors go there, they shall do so alone."

"Be sure to warn them that the forbidden structure is a dangerous place. I cannot allow any from the village to go there. Any who attempt to do so, will face exile. If these visitors are shot with fire or fall sway to magical powers, none us will be able to come to their air or recover their bodies." Elder Yetu concludes. "Though they may have come from the stars, should they go to the forbidden structure, they are likely to die here on our world."

As the elder turns and the villagers begin to disperse. A few linger for a few moments to eye the Starfinders cautiously, but most moving quickly, preferring the safety that lies within their subteranean homes.

Having understood that the party can understand him, but may not be able to do so for long, Venjo rapidly addresses the party. "I trust you understood the elder. She means what she says. When the villager learned that Rujin's daugther, Ugoki, a member of our settlement, had set out to the forbidden outpost in search of the Exile, Elder Yetu and the others would not let Rujin or any of the villagers go and try to bring her home. Ugoki has not been seen since."

"Travel to the forbidden structure is treacherous. It lies near the heart of the Field of Falling Stars. However, if you enter the Cave of Saedmara, which lies near that tower of stones on the horizon, you can travel through its main tunnels in relative safety." Venjo says. "They should return you to the surface, not far from the edge of the Field of Falling Stars."

"That is the way I believe Ugoki went and it is said the Exile went the same way." Venjo continues. "Should you encounter him, beware. Avoid him if you can and do not antagonize him. Before he was banished, it is said that he displayed magical powers. He seemed also to have lost touch with reality, for the Exile spoke of seeing a winged insect, but one unlike any on our world for its wings were delicate, too weak to fly within the atmosphere of our world. He began to speak of a prophecy, claiming that his mystic connection would grant him a divine status—like that of some foretold hero-god—whereby he would one day overcome the Great Star Beast and teach our people how to reach the stars."

Venjo pauses for a moment, "Such is, of course, unthinkable to our elders, but some of us...."

Venjo continues to speak and gesture toward the horizon and the sky, but his words can no longer be understood as the magic of the spellgem expires.

Bringing their dirt trawler to a stop, the two creatures the party had already met dismount. They are immediately met by one of the village elders.

Kalhoun manages to park the vehicle nearby and shut off its gas motor, allowing Vega to hear the discussion among the locals.

"What is the meaning of all this?" The green-skinned elder demands. "You two have come back without any catch? And who is driving the the other dirt trawler?"

"We have something better than a fresh catch, Elder Yetu," Venjo assures. "We have visitors."

"Visitors? I suppose they do seem skilled with the vehicle," conceded Yetu. "But, who are these others? Where have they come from?"

"They are from the stars, Elder Yetu," announces Venjo.

There is a clear gasp that can be heard among the collected locals, which transcends even the obvious language barriers.

"The stars? You know that such talk is forbidden." Yetu scolds the juvenile Venjo. "This world is our home. The only place we were meant to be. We, Vertrullans, were never meant to depart it. Did not the ancestors place the great beast in the sky to ensure that we never foolishly even entertain such thoughts as traveling among the stars?"

"Yes, of course. That is what we have been taught," Venjo concedes. "But, they must have gotten past the great beast somehow, for here they are."

"Be careful. The last Vertrullan who spoke of overcoming the creature and urging travel to the stars was the Exile." Yetu's expression is stern with warning.

"One of them does bear the symbol of the forbidden structure." Rapshider mutters, realizing that the discussion seems to be turning even worse than he had anticipated and clearly hoping to distance himself from the troubles mounting upon Venjo.

"The structure that breathes fire on those that approach?!" Yetu shrieks, clearly finding the explanation unacceptable. "How do you know they are star travelers and not subjects of the Exile's magic or, worse, in league with him?"

In this scenario the GM and players are not playing a game but are merely acting out a play.

I understand what you are saying, but I'd like to offer a few thoughts.

(But, first, as an aside, let me point out that I have played more than one organized play scenario where, as a player, my PC was literally acting out a play—and I found those to be a lot of fun!)

1. I have played in campaigns where the expectation was the plot was entirely up to the players and "anything could happen". Some of those campaigns have been spectacular. Others quickly fell apart because of the lack of expectation led to sort of a paralysis by a GM/player(s) or proved disappointing to a GM/player(s) when they realized they weren't having fun (usually due to different expectations).

2. Organized play games due to the nature are, and should be, different. There is a need for all to come to the table with common expectations as to the type of story to be told.

3. "Acting out a play" may not necessarily be a bad way to approach playing a table of an organized play game. Audiences flock to see plays that they have seen many times before. They know all of the story beats and the outcome of the play even before they shell out a lot of money for a ticket to see it. Why? Part of it may be nostalgia or appreciation for the familiar. But, most of it, I think, is for the performance and the experience.

Performance and experience are integral to organized play. The "performers" are the players and the GM, as well as the random dice rolls, which differ from table to table and aren't likely to be repeatable. The experience is the social aspect, which also comes from the relationship and interaction between the players and the GM. This, too, makes each table uniquely entertaining.

In that sense, the story told at each table of that scenario will be the "same". However, the specifics of the story: the primary characters involved, the decisions made, and the "performance" of each may be different—even if the final outcome is likely to be the same.

4. Perhaps, a GM running a table of organized play may wish to view the experience as collective storytelling. The GM and the players are telling a story together. By its nature, an organized play table of a Society game is required to run a scenario—an outline of a story. The GM and players should come to the table with a common understanding about what the outline likely includes, how the "story beats" are likely to be reached, and a joint expectation as to the type of story being told.
Barry VA Cleveland OH 75 wrote:Their actions are predetermined in these scenarios. The game being mastered is governed by the mechanics and those playing the game, their preferences, abilities, and expectations.

The "job" of a gamemaster running Paranoia is going to be different than a gamemaster running Pathfinder or Star Wars. Those games have different mechanics and different tones.

The "job" of a gamemaster running Dungeons & Dragons for an afterschool club for middle schoolers, who were required to sign-up for some club, is going to be different than a game master running Dungeons & Dragons for a bunch of middle aged drinking buddies. Those groups have different maturity levels, experiences, and interests with regards to entertainment.

The "job" of a gamemaster running Pathfinder for a selected group of friends at home is different than that of gamemaster running an organized play game at a "public" venue such as at a store gameday, at a convention, or on the boards. Games in these venues can be, and often are, viewed, influenced, and impacted by audiences, distractions, time constraints, and additional factors outside of the game.

When considering the "job" of a gamemaster for organized play, one should consider both the nature of the game's mechanics and tone (including the prepublished scenarios) as well as the nature of the players.

The mechanics of organized play for Paizo games focus primarily on combat and skills. The scenarios, which should be considered part of the mechanics for organized play games, PCs are expected to be adventurers and explorers who are dutiful members of a particular organization and will take reasonable steps to complete an assigned mission. PCs are expected not commit evil acts or, under most circumstances, to put themselves in conflict with governmental or other authorities, the general populace, or other major powers.

The players, by their nature, could potentially be just about anybody, with differing ages, cultural backgrounds, personal histories, gaming experience, and/or abilities, whether physical or mental. A GM should be prepared to inform players, teach or, at least, provide reference to basic rules, and provide an enjoyable and welcoming experience.

Public venues, by their nature, can be seen, scrutinized, and judged by those outside of the game. A GM should be mindful of this, too, realizing that their table may be checked for consistence with organized play rules and considered by "others" outside of gaming hobby as being representative of organized play.
I believe the game master's "job" very much depends upon the game being mastered.
One a player/alias has posted in the Gameplay thread of a campaign, the table shows up under the player's Campaign tab here on the Paizo Boards. This is the case even if the player posts nothing more than a dot, such as ".". The table remains in their Campaign tab even after a player deletes a post. This, the process of adding a table to one's Campaign tab without leaving a full post has become known as "dot and delete".
Hesori Zou wrote:Thisbis Critzible would this character work?
