The tough northwoman woke to agonizing pain shooting up her arms. Gritting her teeth to keep from screaming, she slowly opened her eyes. Her first sight was that of her forearms, burnt nearly to a crisp. She struggled to ignore the pain; a slight whimper escaped her despite her best efforts. She clamped her jaw shut quickly. There was no telling what predators might be prowling nearby. She knew she needed to find some food and make a fire... somehow.
Ignoring the urge to thrust her blistered arms into the snow, she slowly hoisted herself to her feet and looked around... and promptly began to heave as her stomach revolted at the sight. No! she cried out silently, throwing a nauseated glance down at her arms. No, no, no! What... how... how did... no!! Burying her face in her blackened hands, she cried.
Hours later, the woman placed the final twig on her campfire. She hardly needed it with the massive pyre burning nearby, but it let her stay a bit farther from the smell of the burning corpses. Her hands were in agony, the blisters cracked and oozing fluid which froze on her skin nearly immediately. Eventually, the woman fell into a troubled sleep.
