as the group calls out to the naga, you catch motion inside of the cave. Large serpentine coils move through the cavern, spread over a fairly large portion of the cave. scales glisten in rainbow hues as sunlight catches them from the cave entrance. as Lara speaks you hear a soft rasping laugh echo from in the chamber

"Do not worry young lady, I can understand these others perfectly well."

a face appears in the cave entrance, attached to the long snake-like body in the cave

Welcome, Kragg Stoneheart and companions. It has been some time since I have had guests. I am afraid my current abode is less than inviting, but please do come in and be my guests. I shall offer what little hospitality I am able. I know Koloshkora of the Okoloro well, and if they directed you to me you must be friends.

I'll help Martel get the supplies into town to work on boarding up these windows! Jonah only worked with the crew at the lumber yards for a day or two, but he made some connections while there.

He helps with cutting wood if needed, but it sounds like that part may already be covered.

"Zander, we will need your assistance getting all of these boards to where they need ot go. your animals look well-suited to the task, I will assist with them however I can. I have a way with animals, I think I can keep them moving.

once the supplies get into town, Jonah is not hesitant at all to get his hands dirty and nail up some boards. his knowledge of engineering and the proper way to brace for a storm is limited, but he is open to suggestions and willing to take direction. if his knowledge of basic outdoor survival can help determine how to best prep a house he will use it, otherwise he will defer to others and just bang in nails.

the night passes calmy for the most part. at one point in the middle of the night Lolito spots movement outside of the light of the campfire. he is able to get a clear enough view of the creature to determine it is a monkey goblin eying the camp. it doesn't come any closer however and seems to run away once spotted.

at one other point in the night Lolito hears strange noises in the night that don't sound like anything he has encountered before. it sounds like a rumbling like boulders rolling downhill mixed with exceptionally loud sounds of insects clicking and chittering. he doesn't see what is making the noise, but it is more than a little unsettling.

he is also interested in the tonic, and annoyed that they have run out. That's going to be important... Splits the Leaves, do you think you can prepare enough for us all to use some? would really hate for any of us to get Malaria out there...

Ashling is breathing, but not looking good. the arrow wound is not bleeding much, but definitely looks life-threatening to Samuel.

Nadya carefully approaches the giant wolf.

It has been a long time since I have seen one of these in person. they call them Winter Wolves, massive beasts that serve the witches. do you see how this one has two different colors in its eyes? legend tells that you can skin such a beast to create something called a "rimepelt", a magical cloak that can let you take on the appearance of one of these creatures.

it would take a survival check to help Nadya skin and prepare the pelt

Letitia heals Alec a good bit, getting him back in the fight.

Samuel shoots the wolf, injuring it but not really slowing it down.

Alec picks up his weapon and slams it into the wolf hitting it as hard as he's ever hit anything before. somehow the massive wolf is still standing, with blood dripping from a deep cut.

Callix rushes the last archer.

Nadya fires two more arrows at the wolf, striking it twice but neither arrow does much to slow the wolf down.

Alec is injured badly by another dangerous bite, but somehow keeps his feet again, much to the irritation of the wolf.

the last archer fires his bow at the woman rushing his position
longbow: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10
she is very intimidating and the man cannot get an accurate shot.

fixed up my profile. Animal companions are a pain to build, I always miss something on them. should be set now.

I decided to drop that auspicious tattoo trait, I didn't realize that it was a shoanti only thing. one of the things I really hate about PF1 is traits. there are so freaking many of them and not a good way to search through for what you like. and the sites that do have a good list of traits don't often show all of the requirements like that... found a different trait that probably fits a fortune hunter like Jonah a bit better: Canon of Coin. won't work at all right away, but once he is able to hold on to some gold it will give them same +1 will save as the tattoo.

swapped out the pickaxe. odd that it is only in one campaign, but whatever. just wanted a good backup melee weapon anyways. switched to a heavy flail.

and for backstory I have this now: (like the idea of the white Allesarous)

backstory:

... and that's when I knew I had it. Weeks of tracking, supplies down to almost nothing, my guide already turned back from exhaustion. but finally it was just me and him, the finest specimen of a Bulette you ever did see. he was wounded, and I was ready for him. I knew where he would burrow out and when he did, I took my shot. right on the money! Jonah slams his fist down on the table, making a few coins jump.

at that point he looked around the table and to his dismay saw that no one was really paying much attention. had he told this story before to this group? it was hard to keep track.

one of the men at the table ordered another beer for Jonah, but a voice in the back of his head told him it was just given to make him stop talking for a bit.

Not interesting enough anymore am I? They just don't get me. they don't understand how impressive these hunts are. I'll show them.

but all of this pales in comparison to the biggest trophy of them all. the white Allesarous! one of Jonah's companions spit out a mouth full of drink at that. oh yes, I know what you're thinking. none of those around here. but mark my words, they are quite real, and this one is a king among monsters. bears the scars left by dozens of hunters who have tried to bag him. all of them are just bones now, gnawed on by the beast and his pack. but he hasn't faced me yet, has he?

on of the men just shakes his head Sure Jonah, I'm sure you're going to be the one to take this one down. be sure to bring us back a tooth or somethin'

You laugh now, but when I bag this beauty and bring it back here you'll have some apologies to make, Brand. in fact, my cousin is living out near Sargava in some little spot named Pridon’s Hearth. he claims he has seen the White Allesarous. I'm going to be heading that way next week. might be a while before you lot see my pretty face again, but when I return I'll have that tooth for you!

Sure Jonah. you do that. I bet you 10 gold you never even see the beast

Ah you know me too well. never could resist a bet. Jonah reaches out and shakes his friends hand before dropping a few coins on the table and strolling out of the bar.

Samuel takes the lead, firing a bullet into one of the undead. the bullet strikes true, but doesn't seem to do as much to the monster as it should have.

Letitia casts a spell creating a blinding light on the two priests.

Ashling charges in. as she enters the courtyard she feels a crushing despair pull at her mind.

posting this on all of my PbP games:

the last month of the year is very busy for a lot of people with Christmas and vacations and all that goes with that. I will be traveling for the last couple weeks of the year, but will continue to post when possible.

expectations for the rest of the year will be much more relaxed. I will not bot anyone unless asked to, and will hold off on GM posts until everyone has been able to respond to the last post, unless it is a conversation where only a few PCs are asking questions to an NPC or something like that.

once we hit January I will start posting and checkin more regularly again and we can pick back up.

Nadya nods at Letitia's words. "I would rather not make something that large angry. let us leave it alone. this place looks inviting, but I would not linger here long. I have heard of places like this, but never seen them myself. the group my uncle works with may be at least loosely involved in this. they wish to see the eternal winter ended and allow spring back into Irrisen. occasionally some of them work up the courage to try to push back the witch magic and we get these little pockets of warmth. the witches always come back and stamp them out, though. We should not be here when they decide to turn their attention here...

without waiting for everyone to agree, Nadya turns the lead sled back away from the green stretch, and begins making her way around in a large loop.

I'm going to move us forward a little bit. travel is not the most interesting part of pathfinder on a good day, and worse in PbP (In my opinion). not going to worry too much about provisions, navigation, or random encounters. if there is RP you wish to do or other tasks you want ot be doing while traveling feel free to go on those tangents and I will slow down the narration while those conversations happen.

Travel Montage

on the sixth day of traveling with the Petskas, you see the first sign of civilization since the cabin with the moss problem. ahead you see a mostly ruined village. it was once a small town or village prior to the Winter War. Most of the buildings are now little more than piles of snow-covered stones with crumbled sections of walls standing out from the snow.
The only structure that might offer temporary shelter appears to be an old temple inside of a walled courtyard with an arch at the entrance. the front door to the temple has rotted away, but a smooth stone circle engraved with the outline of a butterfly is mounted above the doorway.

knowledge religion DC 10:

the symbol is of the goddess Desna

knowledge geography DC 15:

your best guess based on maps you have looked at of the region is that this is the town of Ulsgaard, an Ulfen settlement that fell during the first month of the Winter War as the Ulfen were driven south before the might of Baba Yaga's army of giants, trolls and impossibly cold weather.

Perception DC 18:

you see motion in the church courtyard. on a closer look you see two men dressed in robes of the priesthood walking in the courtyard, talking quietly together. they do not seem to have seen you yet.

Galen is a little surprised at the run-down look of the shrine. even though he serves Sarenrae rather than Gozreh the sight of a completely untended shrine surprises him and makes him feel more than a little sad
"so this whole village... and no priests? how was the plague healed without the help of a cleric? do any other deities have places of worship here?"

Both Kragg and Lolito get the sense that the fisherman is telling the truth. nothing about his story itself or the way he told it makes you think he is hiding something.

in response to Lolito's question, Soren says
"a lot of the island looks very much the same from out on the water. at first it was more that I didn't see what i was expecting than that i saw something new. I did eventually see two interesting landmarks though. one was a tall stone obelisk of some sort on a smaller island. near that but on the larger island was a big pile of massive whale bones. they looked like maybe they had been used as supports for shelters at some point in the past.

the obelisk you would recognize as being the one on the Strix island (marked D on the island map). the second landmark is near that, but is one you are not familiar with at all. I added a new mark "K" for approximately where this whale bone pile might be

Sygia's eyes grow dark and angry as Samuel mentions her tail. she opens her mouth to say something, but Finngarth puts a hand on her arm. "they do not mean to be rude, my love. they just don't understand. they saved me, they are not like the others we have known

Sygia takes a deep breath and nods to her husband. "I do not normally tell this to anyone. As you have figured out I am not human. I am Fey, something known as a Huldra. The humans here were not willing to let me live among them and saw my marriage to one of their men as an abomination. That is why i do not usually let people see what I am.

She seems to brace herself, then removes the long cloak she was wearing. underneath you see she has a large tail that looks like a fox tail. and above the low back of her blouse you see that instead of flesh on her back, the back of her torso is hollow and made of wood.

knowledge nature DC 17:

Huldra are rumored to have been created by troll witches as a means to lure men into the trolls' clutches. they are all female, and appear to be beautiful humans from the front. but in the back they have a hollow recess in their back, and a large tail. They aggressively deny the story that they were created by trolls, and have a deep-set hatred and fear of trolls.

Though huldras are not ashamed of their status as fey, they react rather negatively when someone points out their tails. So long as humanoids are respectful, however, huldras tend to be curious about other races, and may aid those who pass through their territories.

they are known to have the ability to influence luck, as well as a natural aptitude for magic that is common among fey

.

Now you know our secret. I hope that even knowing about us and our relationship you will still accept our hospitality for the night. you have my deepest thanks for saving my husband.

Finngarth adds
Yes, I don't know what we would have done if you had not come. I would have been a slave to that plant for the rest of my life. I want to give you something as thanks. it is my lucky bear trap he gives you a bear trap that looks very mundane. however, it is radiating a faint aura of transmutation magic

"Yes, my name is Sygia. she pauses and looks at you for a moment How much did my husband tell you while he was under the effects of whatever it is that is making him act fuzzy right now? about why society does not approve of us?

Yes Teb Knotten, the troll you fought just outside the winter portal was a Moss Troll. generally slightly weaker than a Frost Troll, but of course that distinction doesn't always carry through in pathfinder where class levels can be slapped on top of any monster profile

the woman walks a little closer to Samuel in order to answer him
thank you so much for your help. How many are you? I am sure we can find room for everyone, no need to sleep out in the cold. relief is very apparent on her face. Samuel does not get the feeling that she is being anything less than completely honest about her need for help.

My husband's name is Finngarth. he is a skald man, large and well-built. he was a mercenary for a while and knows how to fight, but settled down when we got married. In his prime there is no way a single troll could best him, but... that was years ago

Letitia and anyone else hitting a Knowledge Local DC 18:

you would not expect to find a moss troll in this part of Irrisen. they live mostly up in the branches of trees rather than in a cave. the trees in this forest are mostly evergreen and do not offer the kind of supportive branches that a moss troll would find most to their liking.

Anger clouds Nadya's face at the news of her daughter's death. she sits in stunned silence while you discuss among yourselves who will be continuing on to Whitethrone. finally she speaks

I will see Nazheena pay for this. I don't know how, and I may very well die trying, but I can't live with myself for not trying to do something. The depravity of a woman who would torture a young girl to the point of suicide... my poor Thora's death is on Nazheena's hands, even if she did not strike the killing blow.

You have done much by killing her apprentice. he was not weak. I do not know what I can do against a powerful witch like Nazheena, but I think you may be able to succeed where I cannot. I cannot ask you to do more than you are willing, but if the opportunity presents itself, please help me kill her!

her voice shakes and is full of pain, but you can see the resolve and steel inside of her rising with every word.

We're going to take this fight right to the gates of Whitethrone if we have to. you say you want to go there, let me be your guide. I know the way, and I know the dangers we will face. this land is not hospitable to those not used to it. and if you did kill a Jadwiga... you will be hunted.

Luckily, I know a man who can help. my uncle works in the village just outside the walls of the capital. he has been helping a resistance movement called the Heralds of Summer's Return within the capital by smuggling in supplies and food. if anyone can get you inside the walls of Whitethrone it is him.

As you command, my Lady the guard replies to Letitia. You are now mistress of this tower, and we will keep it ready for you until your return. but before you leave, what is your name? I do not even know who it is I now obey.

He looks quite shaken by all that has happened. obviously tryign to find the words so as to not upset you any further he says I do not wish to get involved in a feud between the Jadwiga. until such a time as she is killed or releases her claim on this tower, Nazheena still holds a truer claim to this place than you. if she returns we will all turn to serve her with no hesitation. I know this is not the answer you would like, but no one in his right mind would do differently.

once satisfied with his response, the group decides on their next course of action: return to Waldsby and speak with Nadya. after making sure she is ok.

it looks to me like everyone has said what they wanted to here. I am going to handwave the travel back to Waldsby as it is only a day's journey and you will be traveling openly. if you wish to RP any conversations on the way to town feel free to slot those in now and I'll hold the action until then.

___________________________

the group arrives in Waldsby in the evening on the same day they left the Pale Tower. they receive possibly an even colder reception than they did the first time through here, and when people spot the dogsleds coming up the road most of them go inside and shutter their windows.

the group makes their way to Nadya's house and knock. they are greeted by their friend who ushers them all inside and immediately starts putting out food for them to eat.

I am so glad to see you all return safely! I am sorry to say I had little hope of ever seeing you again. I thought you would either be killed, captured, or have gone home after leaving Waldsby. some soldiers came the same day you left, looking for you. and for me. apparently someone tipped them off to us being together and they were very interested in capturing you. luckily there are enough people here who owe me favors that I was hidden and not given up.

but enough about that. please, tell me what happened. did you find my daughter? where is she? her voice sounds strained, like she is trying to be hopeful, but when she doesn't see her daughter with you she fears bad news...

Hengeist hangs back uncertainly, letting the more scholarly types try to figure out what the significance of this room could be. he looks around into the darkness, weapons ready.

At Kragg's request, Lara casts Light on a rock and chucks it in the direction of the crack in the wall where Treiste saw motion.

the rock clatters to a stop and lights up the room. shadows evaporate with the magical light. all but two of them that is....

no without darkness to hid them, two humanoid shadows stand in the open. they appear to form from shadow, but take a more solid form once the light reveals them. smoke rises from their forms, and bright red embers sit deep in their eyes...

Luckily, the party is ready due to Trieste's keen eyesight so no surprise round for the creatures!

knowledge religion DC 18:

these creatures are known as Blast Shadows. remnants of the people who lived here when the nation of Azlant was blasted to pieces by Earthfall. though they look insubstantial and wreathed in smoke and flame, they are not incorporeal. they cause fire damage, are immune to fire, and are undead.

even though they are surprised at being spotted, the creatures are still faster than anyone in the party.

The group spends a full day in the top of the tower, resting, studying and examining the rooms around the tower. there is not a lot of space and perhaps some of the party start feeling a little restless after sitting in an enemy stronghold for so long. however, no one comes and bothers you in the time you spend. examining the ice teleporter will show that it has been altered somehow, making it locked so that only the proper key will allow access. perhaps no one else has a key to this room?

Samuel spends some time looking in the other rooms others can as well, there is plenty of time to do stuff while Letitia learns spells!

Room Q21:

this small bedroom is currently empty. there is one simple bed and several empty shelves. it looks like no one has used it in a while.

Room Q22:

this room looks quite comfortable, with a large bed, reading desk, padded chair, a bookshelf and a storage chest. windows provide lots of natural light, and several paintings of wintery scenes hang on the walls.

Room Q23:

A large bed, wardrobe, reading desk and bookshelf take up most of this circular bedroom. a carved ice sculpture of a striking, robed woman with an owl on her shoulder stands next to an alcove of crystaline tiles. to the south, a white curtain hangs in a doorway.

behind the curtain is a thick door made of ice with a keyhole set into the smooth surface.

Callix:

with help from the others, you are able to figure out the cauldron.

it is known as a cauldron of overwhelming allies.
once per day, if used as a focus or divine focus for a summon monster or summon nature's ally spell, the cauldron automatically conjures 1d3 additional creatures of the same kind from the next lower tier list. for example, if a caster uses summon monster 3 to summon 1d3 wolves, she could use the cauldron to summon an additional 1d3 wolves (or other creatures from the summon monster 2 list.)

the globe still rotates overhead, serving as a reminder that even with all of the interesting items and spells in this tower, your goal has not yet been completed.

Once everyone is up, you feel the weight of the accomplishment you have made. you were able to storm a stronghold of Irrisen and kill a powerful witch. this realization encourages you, but also maybe makes you realize how far in you find yourselves.

You all level up! Welcome to level 4!

the group is healed to the point of consciousness, but not far beyond that. nothing else appears to attack them, giving a moment of respite. Samuel immediately starts looking around the room for information, his Sentinel training kicking in once again.

Letitia tries to talk with the goat, but gets no response other than normal goat noises. unless you have a way to magically understand animals, only a familiar's master can converse with it

Radosek's body:

radosek has a on his person:
an icicle wand
2 potions
1 scroll
1 magical amulet
1 magical cloak
1 magical ring

looting the room:

the cauldron in the alcove is definitely magical
the alcove also contains enough equipment and material to be considered a full alchemist lab, plus a bunch of completed alchemical items:
2 acid flasks
3 alchemist's fire
3 liquid ice
3 smokesticks (each a different color)
a sunrod
2 tanglefoot bags
3 thunderstones
15 tinderwigs in a case
3 cold iron weapon blanches.

the main room has piles of scrolls and books that would take time to go through for helpful information. to use these books to learn more about the ritual going on with the portal, take one hour of studying the papers aroudn the room

knowledge Geography DC 15, or an hour of study:

you examine the roattaing image of Golarion and are able to pinpoint the Border Wood and Heldren. it is illuminated with a bright dot. symbols on the map indicate a ley line running through the Border Wood that appears to be connected to this location, running right under the Pale Tower. the ritual is taking advatnage of this connection to hold the portal open. to come up with a way to disrupt the spell will take a spellcraft check at this point.

in addition to everything in this room, there are 3 doors spread around the outside of the room

as long as people are cool with things being in a position that wouldn't actually have worked 100%, I would be ok with that solution since things are looking pretty rough otherwise. for the elemental to be fighting Letitia to the side of the room, there would have been an opportunity for Ashling to take an AoO on it as it chased Letitia, and the elemental would have been possibly hit by the lightning. it would also be in a place where it could make an AoO as Ashling moves this round. if we just ingnore both of those AoOs and have the lightning bolt go off right before the elemental moves, I could see that working.

Lines of arcane energy glow across the globe's surface, faintly humming with power as they connect multiple endpoints in a radiant glow bright enough to illuminate the domed ceiling 30 feet overhead. many tables and shelves covered in books, maps, and scrolls line the room's circular walls. a large ornate mirror hangs between 2 open windows to the west. Twin ice sculptures of demonic figures flank a bubbling cauldron in an archway leading into a deep alcove to the south.

as you take the room in, the first moving thing you see is.... a goat. a fairly normal-looking goat is standing just to the side of the summoning circle, watching you appear as if it was nothing out of the ordinary.

as you are watching the goat, from the southern alcove steps a tall human man, wearing black robes and a thick blue cape.
"Ah, there you are! I was curious how long it would take you to reach me! watching your progress has been very entertaining indeed. but I am afraid you are interrupting very important work here, and I must have you leave!

he tosses a handful of something into the cauldron and walks slowly towards you.

suddenly the room is full of movement. you spot a tiny winged creature fluttering around the globe and recognize the Atomie that got away earlier. from the icy floor, 4 ice elementals rise up, like fish breaking the surface of a pond.
