For one, to completely replace a GM, the AI (or whatever) would have to completely replicate the functionality of a human.
The real value is in reducing/eliminating GM prep.

For Christmas, I'm bringing my savory bread pudding and squash. 3 kinds of cheese melted into a pile of sourdough bread. I made it for thanksgiving, but I skimped on the cheese and cream. It was good, but not as gooey as I wanted it to be. Closer to the consistency of normal stuffing. I bake it on top of the spaghetti squash in the dutch oven normally, but I may have to use the crock pot.
I tried a chana masala recently.
That said, an semi-easy thing to do is potatoes. Wrap them in foil, put a little fat on the skin, and tuck them in near the base of the fire. I'd do a couple extra, just in case one gets burned. You can also cut and season them prior to cooking if preferred.

Cook the lentils separately (I used my rice cooker).

Set the peppers and mushrooms aside.

Dash of oil, heat up the garlic. Once aromatic, add the coconut milk. Add a decent size spoonful of peanut butter. Add curry powder until it have a strong enough curry taste to your preference (I start with about a tablespoon, and add more every 30-60 seconds until I'm happy). After 3-4 minutes, add your vegetables. When everything is nice and coated and the curry sauce thickens just a little bit, turn off heat and add the lentils.

I top it with szechuan chili crisp oil. A little bit of the solid chili flakes, but also the oil itself helps spread out the flavor.

I think it'll work as a low cholesterol/low sugar/high fiber snack.
I made some no-bake oatballs last night that were pretty good. Rolled oats, flax seed, chia seeds, honey, vanilla, peanut butter, sugarless vegan chocolate chips (no dairy fat). Honestly they were pretty good. I think I could even use less honey and switch to a less sweet peanut butter (used regular skippy) and I'd still like them. Tons of fiber, which is key.

Just made myself some curry noodles. Cooked the noodles. Used the same pot to heat up a bag of frozen vegetables. Garlic, ginger, lots of curry powder, and kept adding coconut milk until there was enough to coat everything. Once it was nice and combined, added the noodles, along with a little more coconut milk to ensure everything was coated.

He's a pitbull mix with prodigious amounts of energy. He's the most energetic dog I've ever met or heard about. When given the chance, he will play fetch for 6 hours with only short breaks to catch his breath. He will play fetch until he hurts himself. I am not exaggerating with the 6 hours either. His previous record was 5 1/2 hours, and the record before that was 5 hours.

He really enjoyed the summer of 2020. I live in a very large apartment building (nearly 400 units), and a group of friendly dog owners met at a nearby park to hang out every day during the first shut down. We'd be out there for about 2-3 hours every day playing fetch and around other dogs and people. He isn't very cuddly (we're working on it), but he loves having everyone he knows around him all the time.

I haven't taken him camping, but that's because he's crazy. He likes to swim, and has zero qualms about jumping in the water. I like to go on canoe trips, but I'm concerned about him tipping the canoe with me and all my stuff being dumped in the lake. Not so bad if you're just doing an afternoon paddle and going back to a dock, but it sucks when you're paddling in the wilderness in cold weather. We may give it a shot this summer on a trip with more people (more weight in the canoe from a person and gear).
I got a dog 4 years ago (at the end of this month). It is not near as soft and subtle as I remember either the 15 or 18 (though I still have some 18 to compare, I'm going to wait on that for a while). It has some smoke to it, and in general I got a fairly earthy impression from it. It's a lot less lively than Laphroaig 10, but in a good way. Far more approachable, but still definitely scotch. I can sense some decent complexity, but I can't make it all out at the moment.

For tonight, I infused some wild turkey 101 with a bunch of ingredients for the last few days (thyme, orange, apple, bitters, sugar), then I made it into an old fashioned (bitters, sugar, water).
There's a fight where one of the sidekicks shoots a henchmen (before the fight breaks out), and the bullet does nothing. It's not clear why they're fighting to me. I get that that character is a return from one of the sequels, but it's been forever since I saw it, and I didn't recognize them. I had no clue what their problem with Neo was. I had no idea what they were fighting over. Like... why did the good guys want to fight this out instead of running? Why did the bad guys want to instigate this fight? None of it was clear, and lo and behold... the fight doesn't really resolve itself either. It just kind of ends and moves on.

Some of the smaller scenes were fine. Reeves and Moss have okay chemistry (plays more like old friends than romantic partners to me), but certainly not "the world needs to revolve around this love" chemistry. They both play their parts well, and the smaller moments are good with them.

There are no real twists and turns... it kind of is just laid out and then proceeds exactly as laid out. Nothing is surprising.

The film includes a lot of meta commentary about itself... and it's all boring.

I never really liked the sequels, and I only saw them once each. That will probably include this one now.

You will need a decent meat thermometer.

First, it depends on how well done you like it.
Blue/very rare - put the steak on the counter for about 90 minutes - 2 hours (basically, get the steak to room temperature).
Rare/medium rare - put it in the oven until it has an internal temp of about 90-95. (set the oven to 225)
Medium/Well done - internal temp to about 110-120. (still keep the oven low)
These temperatures are below the guidelines for steak doneness, but this is intentional, it will continue to cook while resting and searing.

Season the steak heavily, then let it rest for a couple minutes. I personally love a brown sugar rub. I rub it in with a little oil.
2 part brown sugar
1 part salt
1 part freshly ground pepper (or substitute your favorite beef rub, if it has salt, skip the salt above)

I season heavily because for it doesn't have time to marinate here, it's just going to be the crust.

While the steak rests, prepare your high heat. One of my favorites is to use a charcoal chimney and leave the charcoal in it. It gets extremely hot, and you'll need a metal grate to put over it. This method you will burn your steak in 90-120 seconds, so be quick. It takes like 60 seconds per side to get a good char.

Otherwise, a big pile of coals, a gas grill on high, or a cast iron skillet on high heat.

I find this method more consistent because you control the internal temp first. The sear is very much just to sear it and nothing else. You want to sear for as little as possible.

The sear/bake or bake/sear, either way... I find that if you do overcook your steak, it should still be juicy and tender. I've accidently made mine well-done (I prefer rare/medium) and I still enjoy it.

sidenote: I bought something to level up my kitchen skills, a set of whetstones so I can sharpen my knives myself. Also, my girlfriend's knives are in horrible shape, so I'm going to practice on hers.
The sear first, oven second is good, but I find the reverse is more consistent. We had someone vegan at dinner, so I made it fully vegan, but you can easily replace these ingredients back with dairy and/or add some bacon or sausage.

1 large pie pumpkin (probably 10 inches tall, 7 inches diameter), gutted and cleaned.
Filled to the brim with stale bread cubes. (2/3 of a big loaf of french country-style bread)
Transferred the bread cubes to a mixing bowl.
Thinly sliced 3 green onions, but I probably could have done 4 or 5.
4 cloves of garlic, 2 rough chopped, 2 minced.
Softened the garlic and onions on the stove in some olive oil.
Added the garlic and onions to the mixing bowl.
1 cup of unflavored oatmilk coffee creamer to the bowl.
4 ounces of grated vegan parmesan
7 ounces of cashew cheese cubed (garlic and chive flavored)
1 tablespoon of thyme

Tossed everything until well mixed. Stuffed at much of it as I could back in the pumpkin (about 1 cup's worth didn't fit back in).
Coated the outside of the pumpkin in a high temp oil (I used peanut oil).
Baked at 350 for 90 minutes.

Serve it right out of the pumpkin, be sure to scrape flesh from the inside of the pumpkin. The cheese and creamer can be rich tasting, and the pumpkin helps balance it out.

The cashew cheese tasted good, but it didn't "melt" at all. It stayed clumped, and small cubes found each other and formed bigger clumps. Getting more pumpkin solved that, but I'd try a different kind of cheese.

Also, the pumpkin looks wonderful on the table/counter and gets lots of compliments. This morning I cooked up some sausage and added it to the leftovers, which I promptly devoured.
I made my bread pudding. I can't describe a single scene from the books that wasn't in the movie. I'm not sure how to convince you how uninvested in an accurate portrayal of the book I am.

Consider for just a moment that I am NOT a hardcore Dune fan. I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the Lynch movie. I enjoyed the miniseries. I've enjoyed each of them once, except the Lynch movie, which I've seen probably 4 times over the past 35 years. I remember the visuals well enough I think I saw it twice as a kid, as my dad was very into sci-fi, then two more times as an adult, with one of those viewings being about a week before the most recent release. The 84 version would probably not even crack the top 200 of my favorite movies of all time. I have zero intention of rereading the book ever. I'd rather start digging into Kershaw's abridged biography of a certain someone from WW2, which is over 900 pages long, but as I'm in grad school, most of my reading is focused on career development stuff at this time.

I am not expressing emotional disappointment to you.

I am telling you aspects of the story that I thought were weak.
I haven't read the book in over 20 years, and only read it the once.
My friend's brewery just closed. Their landlord screwed them over. Last winter, I was really enjoying their imperial/pastry stouts. Some of them were a bit on the sweet side, so I started making them into boiler makers with scotch.

From my point of view, the Harkonens are nowhere close to being the primary, let alone only, antagonist. That is CLEARLY the emperor, for as yet very very unclear reasons. The Harkonens are just as much puppets dancing as are the Atreides.

As to the Bene Gesserit, they're very mysterious. Its clear they're very powerful and have their own agenda. Its not at all clear whether or not they're allies, antagonists, or something else entirely.

The Spacers Guild are nothing at all. They have no presence in the movie, no resonance.

I think the metaphor of Leto's father was a really good addition. A bullfighter being killed in the ring is a great analogy to what could happen to house Atriedes on Arrakis. The problem is that the bull needs to be established. It's a movie about a bullfighter in which we talk about bulls but never see them.

Or did I suggest a couple of lines of dialogue in already existing scenes, which would probably add at most 30-90 seconds of runtime?

An efficient script writer and director could have done it extremely easily with negligible effect on the run time (or just cut some fat somewhere else).

I personally feel the movie suffers by being ALL about Paul. It becomes a very standard Chosen One narrative when that happens, and retaining details helps smooth that out and make the story feel larger. Making it ALL about Paul makes the story feel smaller to me, and not in a good way.

I'll third this notion. The novel Dune is excellent.
Just for s~@!s and giggles, I started reading it again. About fifty pages or so from being done, and I'm reminded just how much they cut out of the film. There was a lot of good stuff with the Baron I wish they'd have put in. I think Yueh's betrayal in this iteration was completely out of left-field. There were several scenes where an additional line or two could have been added that would have made that make sense and more impactful. Like when Jessica asks him about his wife and he's clearly keeping a secret.Aberzombie wrote:Orville Redenbacher wrote:
