Thanks. Blood of Shadows looks cool.

I don't know if I can make the argument that Jubal Breakbottle and Doragon Feiku work because you don't really have a class feature actually called Rogue Talent.

Any new developments on this? Is it still up to interpretation if ninjas can take this feat?

Ninja is a Rogue in black pajamas.

You can't take levels in both. Pick one or the other.

It is a fun class in its own right and well worth taking. It is just different enough that there can be a Rogue and a Ninja in the same party and they will have little overlap.

GM Hint: Give your goblins levels in Ninja. It's fun!

I like the Truesong idea.

I propose the following changes to the skald:

  • Drop spellcasting
  • d12 hit dice
  • Full Bab
  • Martial Weapon Proficiency
  • Give them Bardic Performance
  • Change Rage Song to a type of bardic performance than only skalds can do (and allies can benefit from if they choose).
  • Change Spell Kenning to a special type of bardic performance as well. The Perform DC would be 20 + spell level. If successful, they can cast any spell from any class as a spell like ability once a day. (Twice at 11th level and thrice at 17th level.) The maximum spell is equal to the skald level divided by 4 (for 6th level spells at level 16).

I think that will be an awesome class to play.

It could be, but it doesn't really take enough from the bard.

I agree with "more barbarian" generally, but there is a bit of a issue...
Martial classes are harder to do.. the knife's edge of balance and viability is very thin there. Give a class spells and it iss far easier to handwave any holes in its design... because spells.

Spells really let you do a lot of things and cover over inconsistencies very well. So much so that a 9 level caster really doesn't need class features.... or at least they don't rely on them at all.

The other problem is that if you try to make this a 4-level caster class with the bard list.... well they already have the Bloodrager in this book, which is a 4-level arcane casting barbarian.

So, I think that sticking with 6-level casting is where you end up, but I also agree with the concept of diminished spellcasting..... AKA getting less spells per level foor mor emartial goodness

I think that's a cop out. So, there really isn't anything else of value to a bard, or as you claim any other classes, other than spells?

Rogues, Fighters, Monks, Barbarians, and Cavaliers are all great classes without spells, so that argument is invalid.

What you are saying is that even if they put all other class features of the bard into the skald except the spellcasting, there would be no point to it.

Edit: Ah, that blog post was official. Well, I...

I think the animal entry is a copy pasta mistake from 3.5. From the beginning, Pathfinder has been clear that Animals can eventually gain intelligence scores higher than 2.

In 3.5, gaining an intelligence higher than 2 turned the animal into a magical beast.

The answer for your question is simple: just play a barbarian bard. My intention here is trying to contribute to the discussion about the skald.

Fixed that for you. Can we put away the snarky comments now?

Well, i'm pretty sure is too late for that suggestion, but maybe the skald would fit better in the concept of the bloodrager: full BAB, d10 Hit Die, 4 levels of spells taken from the Bard spell list (up to 4th level spells).

How about d12 hit die and no spells?

In Norse legends, a skald can levy a litany of insults and condemnations on an opponent so severe that it could cause bleeding from the ears and loss of honor if the recipient does not attack immediately. Other cultures have similar legends about their bard-type members.

With that in mind, I would like to also to suggest the following abilities:

Saga of Insults (Su)Starting at first level, a skald can select one opponent to loudly proclaim a string of insults upon so severe, it causes damage. The damage is 1d4 + CHA modifier of the skald (minimum 1 damage). This ability increases by 1 die for every two levels (2d4 at level 3, 3d4 at level 5, etc). This is a mind-affecting and language-dependent effect. A skald can use this attack a number of times each day equal to his class level + his Charisma modifier. Those targeted by the insults can attempt a Will save for half damage. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the skald’s level + the skald’s Charisma modifier. This ability can be used at any range. The only restriction is that the target see, hear, and understand the skald.

Proclaim Nithe (Su)This is a word so insulting, that to call an opponent this is to invite an instant attack. In Norse cultures, this was called nithe or nīþ. Starting at 4th level, a skald can use the word against a single opponent. The opponent must attempt a Will save or be affected as if by a Rage spell of a caster level equal to the skald's class level. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the skald’s level + the skald’s Charisma modifier. A skald can use this attack against a number of foes per day equal to one for every 4 levels he has. He can target any number up to his maximum at once, but all must be able to see, hear, and understand him. Even if the target makes the save, if it chooses to ignore it, it still loses honor or reputation points equal to the skald's level, but this has no effect if the target does not use honor or reputation.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

I'm still not clear on what items we are carrying individually from the loot.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim settles down with his plus-sized bride.

Does that make me a prince? Can my title be "The Prince of Surprise"?

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Let's be practical so we can collect it all and move on to the next adventure.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"How do we divide up the loot?"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim sees all the fireworks.

"We are rich goblins! Each of us get our own fireworks!"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"This our ship now. We sail out and be goblin pirates!"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim goes to Vorka's room with the skeletons and searches it thoroughly.

Take 20.
Perception: 20 + 3 = 23

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim stabs her again to make sure she is dead.

Coup de grâce
Damage: 1d4 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 4 = 7
Wakizashi is "deadly" so gets a +4 on coup de grâce.
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Fortitude Save DC=: 10 + 7 + 3 = 20

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Am I still flanking?

"Missed me!" Glim says.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 = 21
Subtract two if not flanking and ignore Sneak attack damage.
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Die you dirty goblin gobbler!"
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Oh is it next round?

Glim swings at her again.
Is anybody flanking her yet?
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Oops! I misread the above post. Lord Longtongue missed me! So I am still up and ready to swing at her again!

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim falls to the deck, bleeding from his wounds.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Critical Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Vorka is flat-footed to me.

Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim tries to sneak on board without Vorka noticing.

Stealth: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"I sneaks on board boat. You guys attack her and then pretend to run away. She comes out. You attack her again. Then I stabbity stabs in her the back. Surprise!"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Wait!" Glim exclaims. "Shouldn't we have a plan?"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Is Tindertwig dead?

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim drags Tindertwig & Dirtbag further away!

Then he tries to bandage again!

Heal: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Is it next round yet?

"Double Blast!" Glim says in frustration. He withdraws from combat out of melee range and goes to Tindertwig. He tears off some his own shirt uses the scraps to bandage Tindertwig. He has no skills in healing so he has no idea what he doing.

Heal: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

"What'd you have to get yourself all bloody and on the floor for?"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Can you heal me too?" Glim says.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Blast!" Glim yells in frustration as he misses again.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Surprise!" Glim says as he takes another swipe at Vorka's flank.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 2 = 10
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Argh!!!!!" Shouts Glim in frustration as he misses again.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim tries to give Vorka a pain in the posterior. Let me know if I am unable to flank her.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim spins around and slashes at Vorka's fat flanks with his blade.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 2 = 10
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Hey, don't forget me! I had a readied action too.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim readies an action to slash at her the minute her bottom is within range!

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Male Goblin Ninja 1

"Let's get Vorka!" Glim says.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Critical Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Male Goblin Ninja 1

8 rounds?

Glim draws his wakizashi and moves to a flanking position if possible.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Sneak Attack?: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Glim climbs down.

Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

"Ugly giant frog and even uglier Vorka up there. They want to eat us!"

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Duck!

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Oh, that's a bad roll.

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Is she aware of me?

Male Goblin Ninja 1

Climb on!

Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Male Goblin Ninja 1

How many more times is going to get to attack before I reach the top?
