Shadow's Status

The High Sentinel Lodge

One of the Bandits calls back, "Wait there and I shall retrieve someone you can speak with!" He states as boldly as he dares.

Nox, Aerin, Zeylud, and Satu ONLY:
Give me stealth checks to sneak up behind the Bandits.

GM ZV ONLY:
Perception 1d20 ⇒ 20

Grey, Lanyssa, Freyr, Frjya, and Grievous ONLY:
Make Perception rolls.

Alright, better than my last stretch but not as good as I want it to be.

Good news is that I'll be filing the final Divorce paperwork tomorrow. Then a meeting with the Judge and that'll be behind me!

A little question for the GM from me.

Would it be possible to handle bloodrage like an unchained barbarian rage?
It's a little less bookkeeping, making things a bit easier, but no big change.

Sure, I am all for less bookkeeping in a PbP game.

Nox, Aerin, Zeylud, and Satu ONLY:
It's been a little less than a week since your squad left Demgazi to track down Rohkar's Raiders.

Without question, you were ill prepared for the weather! How and why is it so cold!? Why is it snowing in the Border Woods? Despite the difficulties, you manage to work your way through the woods with extreme caution and find where these Bandits have been holding up. A nice place to be sure. You return to Demgazi for supplies and winter clothing and return to the Border Woods once more.

You've had to be careful to take them unawares as you believe they outnumber you. Now that you have discovered them, a new development arises as another group steps out from the woods...

What is not clear is who they are? What portal do they speak of? Are they on the side of the Raiders?

I have placed your group on the High Sentinel Lodge Map utilizing an Icon of Aerin.

Shadow's Status

Nox, Aerin, Zeylud, and Satu:
OK, I am pressed for time these days so I just do not have the time to comb through the 4 backgrounds and tie them together. Assume that post backgrounds, you all arrive in Demgazi. From there you are all hired by the local Constabulary to track down a local group of bandits named Rohkar's Raiders.

As the town is on the border with Qadira, the soldiers that could track them down are still, even without significant justification, paranoid of trouble from Qadira. Thus, your group gets the job.

The reward, 50 GP per Bandit and 100 GP for Rohkar himself dead, 200 GP alive.

You will enter the scene from the south within the woods having finally found where the bandits hide out...

Post is about to go up for your group.

Frjya steps out as do a few of the others.

The four bandits pause and raise their bows one yells out, "Back beyond the portal? Who the hell are you?" They seem a bit confused by the tactic though with longbows raised, this is clearly a tense situation.

Shadow's Status

RL has been a beast lately.

If you have no already dotted into my Shadow's Status thread (linked in my Avatar) please do so for updates.

As I'll need to get a whole second set of PCs up here, I will updating this one tomorrow, just wanted to let you all know.

Hopefully soon the rough road will pass and I can post on the regular once more...

I've been thinking a bit on this character, and due to the skinwalker/werewolf influence, I'd really like to re-build him as a Lunar Oracle with the Spirit Guide archetype.

He'd still have Hexes (from Spirit Guide), and he'd still be a Witchwolf. Is that enough witchyness to qualify for the game's themes?

OK.

FYI, I plan on getting this back up and running tomorrow night. It looks like we may have lost a few PC's. Sound off if you are still here please. I think this needs 6 to roll forward as the campaign moves forward, I know at least 4 of you are still here.

Faethera shushes the discussion, "They've just exited the front door! Let's let them come to us..."

As you watch, you realize she is correct as three of the Bandits exit and start heading down the path towards you. They are moving slowly and quietly but as you are arrived in the trees before they exited, they cannot see any of you!

Currently, I have the group located in the trees where the Icon of my DM Avatar appears on the map. The bandits are near the front door, just out of sight but no hearing for those who made the check above.

A quick check of the woods shows no traps, at least that any of you can see.

Through the woods? Attempt to disarm the trap? Something else? If you wish to close in without eliminating the element of surprise, give me stealth checks.

Into the Border Wood

The bandit sighs in relief, "Woods, what woods". He crosses the far side of the ice and heads on down the path back to where you all came from.

Hendra remarks, "Don't like it. Don't trust him. See him again it's the last tie anyone will ever see him. Let's move".

---

The High Sentinel Lodge

Another mile southwest and you arrive at your destination after climbing at least a hundred feet into the hills, the snowy trail finally levels off. In a clearing among the trees, a large wooden lodge overlooks a ravine spanned by a long rope bridge. Smoke rises from the lodge’s two snow-covered chimneys, and large woodpile is stacked against the outer wall.

A small outbuilding stands east of the lodge, and a stone well nearly blanketed by snow is barely recognizable to the north. Several tracks lead southwest toward a detached stable.

GM ZV ONLY:
Faethara 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Fryja 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Lurruk 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Lanyssa, Freyr, and Hendra all notice a trap set for the middle of the path leading to the Lodge.

Actions?

Shadow's Status

Into the Border Wood

The bandit seals his kips at Lanyssa's comments, it is Grievous' proximity that forces his trap back open, "The Lady. Not sure, I was sent back out on patrol, I'd bet somewhere in the Lodge though, he wants to ransom her off.

Rohkar raised her with the fey on his own, I think, there was paper nearby, magic's not my thing".

Seems a lot of things aren't this guy's thing...

The bandit shrugs, "Yeah sure, why not. I've got nothin to lose and everything ta gain by assisting you fine folks.

I mean how bad could you all be, you haven't killed me or tortured me. Rohkar is a cleric, Norgorber I think I don't pay attention to his "sermons".

He's got 10 guys at the lodge but half of em have frostbite or somethin. He's also got a few undead at his command, he made em with the Fey so there's somethin not quite right about them. The fey I know of is Vrixx, I think there's others across the bridge but I don't go there. Oh there's also the half-orc, but she's new and he's the cook, kinda cute for a half breed but that's not my thing... er no offense to any of here of course!"

Hendra grimaces and approaches Grey, "Any of those healing touches left?" She eyes Grievous as she puts the final touches to snuffing the fey.

The man looks to Freyr and nods, "Yep. I think he just wants to get as much as he can for as little as possible. The fey also was placed in charge, I'd have shot the minute we saw you approach but the damned thing wanted to use illusions, lost the advantage.

I suppose it doesn't matter now, we lost you won.

You let me go and I'll tell ya' what you need to know. You have to make sure you kill Rohkar, that black hearted cleric, else he'll come after me".

Hendra stares at the man hard, "Rest assured. He's dead and just doesn't know it yet".

The man stares back at the drow, "Lady, I don't doubt that coming from you. We've been using the High Sentinel Lodge as a base of operations. Since the fey appeared Rohkar made a deal that was he said "mutually beneficial". It was to till he got greedy and hit that caravan, now here you all are.

Course the fey wants these two for some reason, I guess you all escaped from them or something?" He looks to Freyr and nods to Frjya.

Knowledge Local DC 17:
For many years, an organization of Taldan rangers called the High Sentinels has operated out of a fortified lodge at the top of Red Run Gorge in the Border Wood, charged with guarding the forest against Qadiran aggression, lest Taldor’s ancient enemy use the wood to hide another invasion force. Over time, however, the continued lack of hostility with Qadira dulled the sharpness of the Sentinels, and most of the unit’s decorated veterans either retired or moved on to other posts, leaving inexperienced citizens of Heldren and the nearby cities of Demgazi and Zimar to fill the rangers’ ranks. The Sentinels turned their attention to more local matters, hunting down bandits who used the forest to attack trade routes in the southern prefectures of Taldor.

Any PC who lived in this area for 1 year or more will gain a +3 to the above check.

Frjya spell works once more and the Bandit falls from the tree! Faethara's acid splash strikes the second one on the ground. He is still Dazed.

Lurruk and Beauty strike simultaneously and the fey, finally, falls to the ground!

The final stubborn Bandit in the tree now fires at Frjya after she brought down two of his allies with simple magic. The shot is not even close.

Grievous sees the Fey spiraling down and releases fire up into the trees. The fey is struck and slams into the ground smoking as Grievous sags to her knees. The last bandit leaps away but is still injured from the flames.

Round 2

Lanyssa dashes across the ice more successfully than most of her companions arriving at the other side. Grey's feet find the right touch on the ice and they too are across.

Freyr's shot goes right through the fey's leg. It screams in pain but continues to climb looking for altitude. Still it is not out of range for Grievous whose bolt also finds the mark!

Hendra from the ice draws her hand crossbow and fires at the fey, "Get down".

Ranged Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 - Damage 1d4 ⇒ 1

Hendra save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7.

As she fires, the drow shrinks! Though her bolt hits, it appears to simply bounce off of the fey's magical hide.

Round 3

Faethera is also able to finally get across.

As the fey spins to look back down, it is cut across the face by Beauty! Still the damn thing hovers in place, bleeding from a few wounds.

"Kill them, kill them all!" it cries out to its arrow wielding companions. It grins and disappears from sight!

Fryja casts again. This time her spell is met with success as one of the bandits falls right out of the tree!

Lanyssa casts a spell granting her increased battle prowess.

Freyr manages to get across the ice as if it were solid ground, he stands next to the drow daring the attackers to fire at him.

Grey follows but once more the ice claims a member of the team and she slides down on her rump... as does Faethara!

Grievous charges cross ice and releases fire!

Lurruk fires at the fey but his shot merely strikes the trees instead.

Finally, Frjya focuses on one of the archers with her spell.

While the fire does not harm the fey, Grievous has flushed the little bastard out. No more cover for him.

It seems the Winter Witch's spell failed as another three bandit arrows fly.

One headed for Freyr, one for Grievous, and one for Lurruk.

Freyr takes a hit in the shoulder. 6 damage. Grievous is as well struck by a well placed arrow. Take 5 damage and make a concentration check to cast your next spell this turn. Lurruk's foe has better aim and also strikes. Lurruk, take 4 damage.

The fey cackles in delight, "Let's cut you down to size evil elf shall we?" Hendra, make a Fortitude save DC 15 or be subject to a Reduce Person spell.

Soon enough the group comes upon the same frozen river as the day before, this time though the elemental standing upon the ice is much larger and more fearsome and alone!

"Surrender the Winter Witch and her sibling and I shall let the rest of you summer folk escape with your lives!"

With the exception of Fryja who is jarred by the appearance of the elemental, the rest of the group easily spots three bandits in the trees across the other side of the river...

Leaving Heldren on pins and needles due to the confirmation of the danger to the small town only several miles away, healed and recovered the investigators return to the ambush site of Lady Malassene carriage. Overnight some of the corpses were visited by wilderness scavengers.

No human scavengers appeared to have come by to loot what little remains. The woods beckon you to investigate within once more. Unfortunately, the tracks through the snow fresh from the previous day have been covered by snowfall...

Make a Survival check DC 20 to follow the trail from yesterday to the brook where the battle with the ice elementals took place.

Round 2

Freyr's strike slices between Fryja and the reeling Grievous ending the threat of the thing as the magic holding it together has been overcome and it shatters into ice that scatters across the icy river.

Hendra and Grievous both slide down onto the cold ice, overcome from the blows they have taken from these ice hearted enemies.

Lanyssa's blade shaves off a significant amount of frost from the enemy threatening her. Lurruk's strike is hard but unfortunately off the mark as he falls to the ice his feet betraying his bladework. Lurruk, down as you are, you are Prone.

Faethara flanks and threatens the ice elemental as Lanyssa steps back from it to support Grievous.

Frjya seeing the Red Elemental break away before her, spins o her heel and attacks the creature that has already been struck several times yellow her indignation at being struck by creatures that served at her beck and call when home makes her step light as air, as if the ice were dirt beneath her feet.
