Does a Morningstar have enough wood to gain the benefits of being made from Darkwood?

ELEMENTAL PROOFING:

This alchemical gel comes in a large
vial with a brush built into the stopper.
It’s used to coat the surface of objects,
protecting them from a specific type
of energy damage. Though elemental
proofing is not harmful to the objects it coats, it acts as a
contact poison to living creatures. Touching elemental proofing
directly causes 1d4 points of damage and 1d4 rounds of
sickness (a DC 14 Fortitude save negates the latter effect).
Creatures immune to poison are likewise immune to the
effects of contacting elemental proofing but gain no benefits
from its application. When applied to weapons or armor,
elemental proofing confers resistances to the coated object,
but none to the wearer.

Each vial of elemental proofing contains enough gel to coat
one Large object, or two Medium or smaller objects. Once
the applied gel dries, it absorbs 10 points of the specified
type of elemental damage each round. Elemental proofing
wears off after 24 hours, and multiple applications of the
gel do not stack. There are four different types of elemental
proofing: acid proofing provides acid resistance 10, flame
proofing provides fire resistance 10, frost proofing provides
cold resistance 10, and lightning proofing provides electricity
resistance 10.

Does this mean I can use a vial of Elemental Proofing as a thrown weapon?

Hello! I saw the recruitment thread you all were apart of, and that you had been left behind. Frankly, I liked some of your character concepts, so I thought I would jump in and fill the gap. Since parts II and III are getting retired in August, we will be starting with part III.

Please check in here and finalize your characters. I will be looking over characters this week and starting after that.

Is there a way to find all of the Pathfinder products that have been written by a particular author?

If not, I would love the addition of a way to do that, either as a search function or as a tab in the author’s profile that lists all of their associated products.

I am creating a new character. He’s a crass fighter with low Charisma. I’m not a person who uses offensive words on a regular basis, but as I was contemplating I realized that he would. Swear words, racial slurs, and generally being abrasive.

This brought me to a couple questions.
Is frequently swearing in character ok under the ‘don’t be a jerk’ rule in PFS? Perhaps with some forewarning.
Does anyone have some creative swear words or phrases that would be Golarion specific? In other words, offensive to someone on Golarion but do not really mean anything to people from Earth.

There have been some thoughts knocking around in my head given the whole discussion on factions possibly changing or getting axed. My main question is, what is a Faction, or rather, what do we want them to be?

I see Factions as being a group that holds similar goals and ideals. While being associated with a nation is nice, for newer players who are not as familiar with the world setting, it does not do much to promote the faction. Factions need to be appealing to a large number of players, but also be defined so that a player knows if his character fits that Faction. Below I will list some thoughts on each faction.

Andoran: Freedom and Democracy for All

There is a central theme here. Freedom, anti-slavery, etc. There is a goal to bring characters together. It seems fairly well defined.

Cheliax: Establish Order, No Matter the Cost

This seems to be where the borderline neutral characters hang out. It’s the ‘bad boys’ of the Society that does not actually allow evil members. I have seen some legalistic characters here, but the missions of the faction don’t seem to resonate with the stated main goal of the faction. I think some work could be done to better define what it means to be Cheliax.

Grand Lodge: Loyalty to the Decemvirate above All

Ok, this is a little vague, but that’s ok. This is the catch-all group, for those characters that don’t really care about the whole faction thing and just want to be plain old Pathfinders. It’s also a place for characters that don’t seem to fit anywhere else. Well defined? No, but it probably needs to be that way.

Lantern Lodge: Spread the Wisdom of Tian Xia

What does that even mean? This is such a vague concept that it’s hard to say whether a character fits it or not. Basically it ends up being the default place to go if you want a character with an oriental feel. The goals could be better defined.

Osirion: Power through Knowledge

Sounds good. Power through learning will be attractive to many a player. The one drawback to this is its strong connection to the Egypt-like culture. I think many a player will be turned away that would have otherwise joined up because they don’t see their character as being ‘Egyptian’.

Quadira: Total Market Control

I like this one. Well defined and good for merchants, or people who just like money. Ouadira is a good Faction in my book.

Sczarni: Personal Gain

This sounds ok, but to me Scarni ends up competing with Quadira, because people who like to control the money tend to be doing it for personal gain. The one big hang up I have with this Faction is that I have not seen one mission where it actually does what it promises! Where is the personal gain? You might just as well say their goal is ‘Karela’s Personal Gain’, because that’s all they do. I would love to see this Faction actually do what it promises its players.

Shadow Lodge: Hold Your Leaders Accountable

This is another Faction that seems counterintuitive. When you read the description it sounds like they want the best for their brother and to protect the common pathfinder. Ok, but then the missions are designed for Rogues and involve deception and mistrust. The way this faction actually plays out is not at all what they pretend to be.

Silver Crusade: Use the Society for Good

Clear and simple definition that will bring in many players. Excellent.

Taldor: Glory Once More

Again, what does that mean? Seriously, I don’t want to need to explain thousands of years of history to a new player just so they understand what this faction is about. It’s associated with a nation but has no clear direction that I can tell at least. Seems to be the stopping point if you want to play an arrogant son of a noble, and that’s about it.

Something New:

Lastly, I would like to point out that there is no Nature focused faction. With all of the Rangers and Druids that join the society, this is a gaping hole in the Faction matrix. Please add something that will appeal to these kinds of nature-focused characters.

I'm trying to understand how Hero's Defiance is supposed to work mechanically. One way to read it would be that it heals you after you take damage that reduces you to 0, but that does not help if you are dead. The other option is that it reduces the damage you take by the healed amount. That is more helpful, but makes less sense mechanically.

My search-fu has not yielded any answers. Can anyone clarify this for me? How does the spell work when the Paladin takes enough damage to go from max HP to Dead?

1/5

There are several PFS scenarios that now feature Chase Scenes. As a GM, can we use the GameMastery Chase Cards Deck as a substitute to the scenario’s prewritten chase sequence? I think that would be fun, and introduce a more random element into the scenario, especially for players who might already know what’s coming.

If “No”, I understand. It may be too close to changing the scenario.

If “Yes”, then you will have at least one more person purchasing this product.

Stats: GMed 8 PFS PBPs; Played 18 PFS PBPs

Drandle Dreng takes a deep breath before continuing on. One of my good friends, a merchant in the Varisian outcast’s haven known as Kaer Maga, sent me a very strange letter, which I need you to investigate. The merchant—his name is Horis Collgardie—tells me that the residents of Kaer Maga are upset about the Society’s plan to build a lodge in their city and even further upset that the agents we sent are making trouble, stirring up the delicate balance of power that exists in the so-called City of Strangers. The trouble is, not the Decemvirate or any venture-captain I can find gave the okay to build a lodge there. We know it would be folly to do so—at least right now—and so this idea that Collgardie has that the Society is there and doing just that is worrisome. I will arrange a boad for you to Korvosa, and send along a couple other Pathfinders as well. From there, book passage on a river ship for Harse, then travel overland to the road’s end at the cliffs below Kaer Maga—the so-called Twisted Door. There you must pay the Duskwardens to escort you through the Halflight Path to reach Kaer Maga. Once inside the city, find Collgardie and find out what he’s talking about. If there are Pathfinders in the city founding a lodge, tell them I order them to stop at once. If this is some kind of ruse, get to the bottom of it and do what you can to keep our Society’s good name in Kaer Maga—we may not be completely welcome there, but neither are we unwelcome. Let’s keep it that way. Feel free to stay a little while to attempt to smooth over any ruffled feathers. Any questions?

Situation:
Players open door, defeat monster, and then either
A) Forget to look for a valuable magic item on the body, or
B) Fail the Perception check to find it.

The grey area comes in when the scenario says, “If the players defeat the monsters reward them with…” It does not name the finding of the item that would presumably lead to the gold value of the encounter in the requirements of getting the gold for the encounter.

I could see GMs approaching this in different ways:
1. Hand wave the finding of the item and grand full gold and gear to the players.
2. Give the players full gold but cross out the items on the Chronicle as they can’t be purchased if unfound.
3. Cross out the items and record less gold equivalent to the item value.

What have you actually done or seen done?

I presume that number 3 is the ‘official’ correct answer. However, the amount the PCs gain from encounters does not always line up with the value of the item. This is easily apparent as the rewards don’t change with table size. So if there are multiple treasure items and one is left behind should I just put out my best guess as to what the value I should deduct is? That seems a bit subjective, but I don’t see any other way to do it.

I presume the answer will be yes, but I at least wanted to ask the question incase others would also benefit from the conversation.

Hey guys. This is the discussion thread for the next high level PFS PBP. I believe we currently have three level 5s, a level 6, and a level 7 character. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think we are looking at a Tier 5-6 scenario, though we could possibly do a Tier 6-7 if some of you want to play up. I am open to suggestions. What do you all what to play? Once we have decided on a scenario I will make this a campaign and create the gameplay thread.

I am not recruiting openly for this PBP. We have five characters and we can run with that. However, if one of you has a friend that would be interested in joining, let me know. We can fit in a sixth if there is someone you want to game with.

In my relatively short stint with the society (read: newly minted one-star GM), I have come to realize that running a game for the Society is a somewhat different animal than running your own home game. Obviously there are the rules for organized play and the paperwork, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

In a home game you have complete control, you create the world/story/encounters; NPCs have only the life you give to them. You are fully immersed in the world, because after all you created every aspect of it. In Society play you are not creating as much as telling a story someone else has written. You don’t plan encounters, plot points, or NPC characters because these are things done for you. These are things I happen to excel at. Instead you are breathing life into another’s story, into already established NPC characters, and running combats as intended to the best of your ability.

Players at my tables have thanked me, said they enjoyed the session, but I have not been satisfied by my performance. I have walked away thinking of things I could have done better, or wondering about what extra flavor I could have infused into the scenario. It has left me feeling, well, average. I don’t want to be an average GM. I’m better than that.

So thus my question: What are those things that set apart the excellent Pathfinder Society GMs?

I’m not talking about the stuff like knowing the rules, reading the scenario multiple times, knowing the strategy and resources for all the bad guys, that’s standard practice. I’m looking for that extra little something that makes your table shine, that makes players remember the experience, that makes people want to sit at your table because they know they will have a great time. I know there are many GMs and Players with excellent ideas for thought and discussion, so lay them on me!

A couple things I have thought of recently to improve my game are to review the region write-up in the Inner Sea World Guide when preparing for a session to add a little more background flavor to the scenario. Also, review the section in the Field Guide that describes the VC your characters will be interacting with to better represent them. Is there an expanded resource somewhere that gives a more in depth description of the VCs we meet on a regular basis?

Hey Paizo guys. First I want to say that I really appreciate your efforts to continue to improve this website and all of the features it offers.

With today’s update to the site I have noticed two glitches that have crept in.
1. When following a thread there is a great thing after the thread name that says if there are new posts to view. I love this functionality but now it displays a new post if I was the one to make the post. This did not happen before.
2. There used to be tabs at the top of the Online Campaign pages that allowed you to easily navigate between the different threads associated with the campaign. They were supper useful and are no longer there, making it a pain to switch between campaign threads. Please bring the tabs back!

A GM walks into a bar...

Stats: GMed 8 PFS PBPs; Played 18 PFS PBPs

The Plan

I have invited you here in order to form a group of players that can role play together through several PFS PBP games. My hope is that the character you bring to the group will be with us for a long time. Implied in joining is a commitment to stick with us for a while and not play your character elsewhere. I also expect players to be able to post at least once a day, preferably a couple of times a day, baring extenuating circumstances. If these two qualifications or the details that follow make it so you do not wish to join this group for the long haul then please tell me so. There will be no hard feelings; honestly there are more players that would be interested in this than I can take, so if you are not interested, someone else will be.

I started this post so everyone can get acquainted. We need to wait to start until myself and a character I have invited here are done with the current PBP we are in. Hopefully not too long, but probably at least a week out. Am I jumping the gun on this? Yes, totally. I’m just excited! I think we have the potential for a really good group here.

I plan to start by running Part 3 of the First Steps Sequence. Take note, this is not three scenarios, only one, the third one. It’s a quick and dirty scenario and I am running it to cater to one of the characters I have invited here. After that I will run 3 scenarios in the 1-2 Tier. Then I will look to run some scenarios in the 3-4 Tier. This is important: After I run 4 scenarios I want all characters to be at 6 XP. This will allow us to move on to a higher tier together. As you may notice, 4 does not equal 6 (honest, I was a math major). That means you will need to get 2 XP for your character from somewhere else over the next six months. There are a few ways to do this.
a) Join the group with a character that already has 2 XP to his name, then you will be right on track.
b) At some point in between scenarios play or GM with your local PFS group to gain the XP needed to get you on track.
c) Join the group with a level 1 character and switch to a level 2 character you already have when the party catches up to you.

I already own several scenarios that I can run for you all, but I am also open to suggestions. If there is something you are interested in, speak up!
Character themes are a little difficult to bring out in PFS play because of the modular feel of the scenarios. Largely it will be your responsibility to bring out important character motivations, goals, and traits. However, if you let me know what your RP goals are, I can attempt to tailor some NPC interactions to play off your character.

Mechanical Particulars

I am a Plot focused GM. I will allow time to role play, after all that’s why we are here, but I will also not hold up the story waiting for you to say something. For better or worse, I don’t like waiting. On the good side it means you should not be waiting long for the next thing to happen, on the bad side it means that if you don’t speak up quickly the opportunity to do something may pass you by. If you think I am moving faster than you can react, then please raise your virtual hand and let me know.

As part of the effort to keep things moving, I will roll initiative, group skill checks, and saves when appropriate for everyone. This will get us past the die rolling and on to the action quicker.

For combat, I will be using Google Docs. I think everyone should be able to see them when I post them. Having a browser that allows you to edit these docs is a plus, but not necessary. You will see what I mean when we get into it.

I will need your PFS number and an email to send your Chronicle sheets. PM me as soon as you are able with those things.

Remember that you can’t play this character elsewhere! (Except in between scenarios to get that extra 2 XP mentioned above.)

Please post any questions here. I don’t claim to be perfect. I promise to listen to any disagreements on rules. Please post respectfully and respect my ruling as GM. I’m here to provide an enjoyable game. I will assume everyone is familiar with the standard formatting of a PBP game, so please ask if you are confused about something. If there is anything in the above info dump that you are unclear on or have an issue with, please bring it up before we get started.

Use this discussion thread for talking about general strategy, telling jokes, and anything else tangentially related to the game. Please only post in the gameplay thread as your character.

Assuming you have taken the time to read all this, introduce yourself. I think currently we have a Barbarian, a Bard, a Monk, a Paladin, a Ranger, and an undecided.

With some of the recent discussions on the PBP format for PFS, a question has risen in my mind. What are scenarios that lend themselves well to the PBP format, or are really better run at the table, and why?

The following are a couple of thoughts from my recent experiences as a PBP GM/Player. For clarification, I am not saying any particular scenario is bad in a particular format, I am more commenting on the Good vs. the Better.

First Steps I: Many RP opportunities in this one. Good at the table, but better in PBP. The format allows you to dig into the NPC interactions more and perhaps throw in some city flavor of your own that you may not have time for in a tabletop setting.

First Steps II: The RP for this scenario is really condensed at the beginning, with more of an open door/fight/search/repeat feel in the second half. Because of this I think it is easy for players in a PBP to lose interest after the RP portion of the game, and thus I’m going with better at the table.

First Steps III: This scenario seems to play fairy quickly at the table. It may be better as a PBP with the opportunity to add more fluff into the scenario, but this could also be done at the table with a well prepared GM. Kind of a toss up.

Frostfur Captives: This can be good as a PBP, but I am going to go with it being better at the table. If you have a GM that really gets into the character of the Goblins in the scenario it can really be a lot of fun. This can be communicated in a PBP, but I think it’s way more enjoyable to actually see your GM being a Goblin. :)

Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment: I think this scenario really shines as a PBP. There are a lot of possible NPC interactions and relationships to explore that are difficult to really do justice to at the table.

Haunting of Hinojai: I could go either way here. The combats are a little complicated for the GM, and thus having the time to consider them in a PBP is a benefit. However, this is also a scenario based on a Horror theme that is easier to communicate in person over a table.

Mists of Mwangi: Players can really get into character with the possible transformation. This can be really entertaining to see, so I will go with better at the table.

Citadel of Flame: A fairly strait forward scenario with not many RP interactions. Better at the table.

Please feel free to add your own!

I have one, or maybe two, open spots for the Haunting of Hinojai Pathfinder Society Scenario. I am wondering if there are any established PFS characters out there in the level 5-6 range that would be interested in coming along, and have not yet experienced the scenario.

We already have a Rogue, a Magus, and two Melee types. A Cleric would be nice, or another caster, but anyone is welcome to post their interest.

This one is certainly not for the faint of heart…

Is it legal to play at a higher tier in a scenario if you fit in the lower tier for that scenario? For example, in a level 5-9 scenario, can a level 5 character play with a level 8-9 party and, assuming he survives, get the tier 8-9 loot?

I’m basically asking this to determine if I need to do an audit on one of my players. His last chronicle indicates that he did this, playing up 3 levels, and in the last session he had about double the magical loot of any other character in the group.

This has probably been addressed somewhere, but I can’t seem to find it.

How do I assign Faction Missions for Seasons 1 & 2 to characters that belong to a faction that did not exist at that time? Do I just assign them another faction’s mission, or let them choose which faction to serve (sight unseen)?

Ah, the Grand Lodge is the place to be! None of this squabbling about political affairs of countries or groups we should not be beholding to, but pure exploration and adventure for adventure’s sake! In scenarios, are we allowed to award creative solutions to problems presented? I.e. modify the ‘requires a DC # [Skill] check’ in a game.

This question comes from a scenario I am running that has a task in it that requires a DC 30 Escape Artist check. Aside from my thoughts on the ridiculously high DC, there is no one in the party who can make that, even on roll of 20. So, do I move on and say “oh well, sucks to be you” or if the players devise another solution that requires a different skill check, do I allow them to do it?

Details were requested.

PBP Details:

I will post on a daily basis, and check the thread far more than that. I hope that players can post at least once a day. If this is a problem, let me know. I don’t want to tie up your characters forever, so I like to keep the story moving.

If you are new to PBP, I have found this thread to be helpful.

Combat Details:

In the interest of time, when combat commences I will roll Initiative for everyone. This will help us all jump into the action a little quicker. You also don’t need to post you actions in initiative order. I will resolve them in that order, but you can post before your ‘turn’. This will help to speed things up. You can also post multiple action options if what action you take depends on someone else’s. That may sound confusing, but I think it will be clear once we get into it.

Map combat is a little difficult in a PBP. I currently don’t have an easy to use map tool for online gaming. My plan is to attempt to avoid using maps altogether, but if they become necessary then I will find a tool to use.

PFS Details:

I will need a copy of your most recent Chronicle Sheet so I can correctly give you credit for this scenario. If you have a scanner, feel free to send me a digital copy. If you don’t, let me know and I will give you my snail mail address. I may request other sheets if there is a particular boon I’m not familiar with, or item I want to verify.

I also do not have a scanner. I will attempt to find one to use for the chronicle sheets, but if that does not work I may have to mail them out.

Other:

Please let me know if you have any questions or objections to the above details. I admit that I am fairly new to the PBP style of play. I have done my research, but I don’t claim to be perfect.

I have noticed that there are a lot of PFS First Steps PBP sessions out there. This is great, but not helpful for anyone with a character above level 1. I am interested in GMing a PFS PBP game with characters in the Level 3-5 range. I currently own The Dalsine Affair for Levels 3-4, and The Frostfur Captives for Levels 4-5, but I can purchase a different scenario if your character has already played these.

To be clear, this is not something you can just create a character for. You need to have an already established Pathfinder Society character in the level range that you would be interested in committing to a PBP. If you are such a player, please post here and if we get a full table we can decide on the scenario to run.

Such personal invitations to the Festival are rare, and you are the envy of others at the Grand Lodge for having received one.

Feel free to describe your preparation for the Festival, and your subsequent arrival.

Does Shatter Defenses trigger for subsequent attacks if it was your first attack and caused the Shaken condition? (Through Enforcer or Cornugon Smash for example) Or do you need to hit them a second time before they are flat-footed for subsequent attacks?

Shatter Defenses (Combat)
Your skill with your chosen weapon leaves opponents unable to defend themselves if you strike them when their defenses are already compromised.
Prerequisites: Weapon Focus, Dazzling Display, base attack bonus +6, proficiency with weapon.
Benefit: Any shaken, frightened, or panicked opponent hit by you this round is flat-footed to your attacks until the end of your next turn. This includes any additional attacks you make this round.

Anyone know where to get a copy?
I want to look at the PFS legal Traits, but it does not seem to be available for download anymore.

Hello! I have been a player and GM of Pathfinder for a while, among other things including its unnamed predecessor, and I am contemplating joining the PFS as it looks to be alive and well here in Minnesota. I have a few questions that are not obvious to me after reading the Player’s Guide, though I could have just missed them.

The core options for characters are obviously available, with a few exceptions, but what about the Races of Golarion sourcebooks? Are players allowed to use spells, feats, traits, etc from those books?

The guide noted that you need to spend PP in order to gain levels in a Prestige Class. How does that work exactly? How much does it cost?

The economy is strictly limited, and for good reason. But how much Gold does the average character actually obtain in his adventuring lifetime? If I have a Ranger who wants an Adamantine weapon and Mythral armor, am I reasonably going to be able to afford them?

Can you play in a session twice with different characters, like say you have two active characters in PFS and you play a module you played last month with one character, but now with the other one. So I mean credit for sessions follows characters, not players, yes?

The guide mentioned that a GM gets credit for a session he runs for his character of appropriate level. How does that work exactly? Do you sign off on your own character? Do you need to wait to purchase gear until the next session you actually play in?

Somewhere it was mentioned that there was a post about the distribution of classes in PFS. I have been unable to find it. If someone could link it for me, I would love to take a look at the numbers.

Thank you, in advance.

1) Is it only the armor check penalty that applies to swim checks, or is there another penalty that is dependant on amount of weight carried like in 3.5? The Core book alludes to the idea that there is another penalty, but I can’t seem to find the actual mechanics anywhere.

2) Looking at the Gelatinous Cube, if your character is engulfed and does not succumb to paralysis it seem that you can escape by making a grapple check against the Cube’s CMD of -1. Is that right? That’s practically an auto escape if you are not paralyzed. That seems too easy.

3) If a monster has a fear aura, like the Bone Devil for example, is that just a first time save or an ongoing thing? So for example he appears and a character next to him fails a save and is frightened, when he regains his courage and is no longer frightened does he have to make another save when he gets in close to the monster, or is this a once a day sort of thing? Also, I assume a character who sees the Bone Devil and then moves in to attack must make a fear save when he comes within 5 ft, correct?

4) If a character is poisoned for several rounds from an injury and fails his Fort save, when in the initiative order does the poison take effect? Does he make his save and take the ability damage on the Monster’s initiative, the Characters initiative, or ‘between rounds’ (you could call it initiative 0).

5) Does the effect of a Witch’s Hex continue to last if the Witch dies?

6) Can the Witch use the Eagle Eye Hex on the same target repeatedly in subsequent rounds of battle? The wording is a little vague and I think that being able to gimp one monster's AC and then Attack and then Saves and then ... Seems a little broken.

1) How can characters find out a monster’s weaknesses? (ie what bypasses their damage reduction and what element they are vulnerable to.) Is it trial and error only, common knowledge, or somewhere in the middle?

2) Does the effect of a Witch’s Hex continue to last if the Witch dies?

3) The rules seem to indicate that in the first round of battle a character is considered flat-footed if they have not yet acted in the round. Is this really accurate? Because it seems a bit unfair for the people who have rolled poorly on initiative. If this is the case are characters still considered flat-footed if they have been attacked in the surprise round?
