It's because I am an adult, with a job, and a wife, and for most responsible adults that don't have the good fortune to work in the game industry gaming time is a precious thing.

Try living in a town with a relatively shallow pool of available gamers, and then imagine a life where the only real way you can play is to go to conventions.

Try being 20 years out of college, and all your friends have a wife and 2-3 kids, so getting together every Friday night to rock some PF is pretty much out of the question.

So, put all those things in a bowl and realize that organized play lets me say the following: as a busy modern adult, I have access to a great system, the absolute best scenario writers in the business, a ruleset common among all the players/GMs, and an enormous player base that spans the globe.

I could play in houseruled one-shots at conventions, I suppose, but my experience with those is fraught with variance. Also, those aren't my characters, they don't last me from level 1 through level 12+.

Because of PFS Organized Play, I have gotten to meet pretty much all the Paizonians, more than a few fantastic writers, and a truly astonishing array of incredible GMs.

Are those sufficient reasons?
I know why I like it.

If I apply the new ruling that EoT XP are awarded immediately, he is currently sitting at 33+2+1+1 = 37 XP, EoT Part III would leave him at 38 XP when he finished, and EoT Part IV would leave him at 39 XP (level 14) when he finished.

Also, I have another character who will hit 33 XP in two more scenarios (Grayson and his faithful warpig Ozzy!).
what! another 8 square by 5 square fight? Great.

Where am I supposed to put two large trolls, a fighter, a mage, a cleric, and a rogue in a dad-blamed 8 square by 5 square room?

I have been playing with d20Pro lately, using maps that are on the order of 50-60 squares wide, I even have one that measures almost 500 feet by 750 feet. We opened the battle with orc sorcerers throwing fireballs at MAXIMUM range, and the zen archer answering fire at three range increments. AWESOME!

I think the current table-size 24" x 30" map format is a terrible handicap in interesting encounter design. That's one of the reasons I am infatuated with the virtual table top, you can zoom that sucker out and get some real distances going. Gaming Paper is cool for this, as well, at least in one of the dimensions.

Of course, the problem here becomes one of actual physical table size. Who out there has access to a table 12 feet long and 6 feet wide?

If we got away from the one-inch square rule, dropping to 3/4 or 1/2-inch, we could get a 50% or even 100% increase in playable battlefield. I know that I would be 2467% behind such a move.
kelvingreen wrote:The examples all use squares, yes, but the exact size is irrelevant.
For quite some time, we were playing a Shackled City campaign. I ran, using Maptools, and he played a group of 6 PCs.

We have also played a handful of one-shots, loosely based on the concept of an Adventurer's Guild, where he generated 35ish PCs where we rolled up 90th percentile stats, then assigned class and race using an algorithm to match class to the stats. That was pretty danged fun.

We have played through one of the One-on-One Adventures mentioned elsewhere in this thread (I played a 3rd level rogue, and he ran). Following this, we generated a group around the rogue, and a world around the published adventure, and I have been guiding a group of 5th level PCs (archer-ftr, cleric, druid, rogue, and conjurer) through a sandbox world.

Currently, we are running through an experimental encounter, using a group of 11th level Pathfinder PCs, on a very large scale map about 800 feet by 640 feet). The map is big enough that we have had orc sorcerers dropping fireballs at maximum range, and a zen archer firing a composite longbow at more than just the boring 2 range increments. Awesome. Running an entire tribe of orcs and their mysterious overlords is an interesting challenge, and I have been using Hero Lab and d20Pro to adjudicate. It is working out extremely well. In fact, it has made me wish that more encounters were designed with long range play in mind. Of course, this is very tough to do, because most folks don't have a table 800 inches long. It really only works well with a virtual tabletop.
Evil Genius Prime wrote:Just like the title says. Tell us about your duet game and how its going.
Updates, such as cleaning up errata, improving the interface, adding actual program functionality, etc. are free, as part of the program cost.

Adding NEW information, such as that included in a new book, is not free.

Are you saying that the makers of the original IP, paizo, should include all the new information (for instance, the new APG classes) for their roleplaying game as a free update, instead of making you purchase a new book? It's the exact same concept.

In point of fact, if you go to a third party source, such as the PFSRD, you CAN get that information for free, it just doesn't come in a shiny book you can put on your shelf.

This (and any other commercial program) is a product designed to be sold with a specific set of capabilities. Free updates to improve the functionality are certainly expected. Adding new capabilities? That's an upgrade, not an update.

There ARE free alternatives: the aforementioned spreadsheets, PCGen, the now defunct Redblade. Many of these are (or were) very good alternatives, but they are subject to the foibles of all open source things, and that is the availability of someone willing to spend the time to add new data as it is generated. PCGen is one of my all time favorite programs, and those guys do fantastic work, but they don't get paid for it, and as a result, spitting out new datasets (like APG) is subject to the time they have available.

A program like HeroLab, because people PAY for it, is able to hire a guy to sit in a room and jam all that information into the system, THEN sit there and pound on the keys for a few days to make sure it works. This gives them a much shorter time-to-market, but it comes at a cost. It appears that, for a set of any given three PF Companion books, that cost (to the user) is about $5. If you don't need it, don't buy it.

Jeebus, now I sound like I am defending Hero Lab. I promise that I am not specifically doing so, I am just trying to argue the point that, at some point in our lives, it is worth $50 to obtain a product that a) is very good at what it does, b) saves us a great deal of time, c) is the product of skilled people completing a task that we may not be able to complete for ourselves.
Shieldknight wrote:I am unaware of any other software, other than a MMO, that requires you to continually buy updates.

Why don't you just buy the pdf of the books?

I (and I suspect, many others) have purchased the pdf of the books (I also have hard copies of 90% thereof). What I wanted was a program that would allow me, in a matter of about 10 minutes, to construct a fully developed 11th (or whatever) level character, with a useful feature for tracking all resources (potions, scrolls, spells, per day uses, etc.), as well as radio buttons that will automatically apply the affects of things like Power Attack, Deadly Aim, Staggered, Blind, etc.

A computer program does that. The pdf of the books does not. Could I write an Excel spreadsheet to do so? Sure, and some have (I reference here the excellent Erian_7 product (free) and the Ogresheet (also free)). On the other hand, I am an adult with a job and a family, and generally have easier access to about $50 than I do to a hundred hours of farting around with a spreadsheet, trying to poke numbers and type things into all the proper squares and not break my references.
Cartigan wrote:..and?
