Day 1 (Starday, 22 Rova 4707)
The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the Autumnal Equinox. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travellers arrive, and several merchants tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts and souveneirs are there to meet them.
The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s amusement (except Larz’s). Sheriff Belor Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church several years ago. The next speaker is scheduled to be local nobleman Lonjiku Kaijitsu, but a sudden illness has prevented him from attending the ceremony. Sandpoint’s own showman Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes. He delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of selfpromotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up to give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.
Larz is a notorius workaholic around town. Lonjiku Kaijittsu is known for hating these types of festivals and frivolities and is generally a very traditional man. Sheriff Hemlock is speaking not only of the fire that claimed the previous chapel (and the previous head priest and his daughter), but also the rest of the Late Unpleasantness—an event spoken of only in hushed whispers by townsfolk. A serial killer known when at large as Chopper and later found to be local hermit and bird-watcher Jervis Stoot. Chopper clamed the lives of some 25 citizens before being caught by the previous sheriff. Unfortunately, Sheriff Avertin was also his final victim.
After the welcoming speeches are done, the crowd disperses to go and enjoy some festival fun and games! It is fairly early in the morning (about 8 am if someone were to have a clock on hand), so there is a good amount of time before the Swallowtail Release at noon.
Alrighty, time to get into the nitty gritty bits. If each of you would like to give an introduction of your character’s appearance and their morning leading into the festival, please do! If you are not a local it would make sense for you to have stayed at the Rusty Dragon Inn the night before (don’’t worry about the cost) unless you have some other interesting way you’d like to enter town.
Now, without further ado, Festival Fun and Games! There are six games that I’ve come up with (I haven’t been doing nothing for the last three weeks, promise) for you all to participate in. Between all the socializing and navigating the crowd I figure that you will each have time to participate in four games before the noon ceremonies take place. At the end of your introductory post, go ahead and pick the first activity that you’d like to participate in (multiple of you can do the same one) and give me a roll for the listed check.
Archery Contest: Run by Savah Bevaniky of Savah’s Armory. It costs 1sp to play. Each participant is given 3 arrows and use of a shortbow. The target is 30 ft. away.
Roll attack for a shortbow at 30ft. Point Blank Shot and proficiency bonuses and penalties apply here.
Gemstone Panning: Maver and Pennae Kesk, town jewelers, run a gemstone panning stall with some of the shavings from the jewels they’ve cut. Maver, being as clumsy as he is, accidentally threw some full uncut gems in the trough with the shavings. His wife, through upset with her husband, lets the particpants keep whatever they find. Costs 1cp to play.
Roll an appraise or perception check.
Log Splitting: Run by Ibor Thorn of the Sandpoint Lumber Mill with accompaniment from Katrine Vinder, daughter of the owner of the town’s general store. It costs 1cp to play, and those participating are given a wood-cutting axe (great axe) and one swing at a long sturdy log.
Roll 1d12+1.5*(STR MOD). Add power attack damage if applicable (+3). You may rage for this, though you may scare the townsfolk.
Public Auditions: Cyrdak Drokkus of the Sandpoint Theater runs this event. Cyrdak is looking for people with some spirit to perform in some local talent shows. This event is free of charge.
Roll a bluff, diplomacy, intimidate or perform check here. A good description of the talent being displayed here may give you a bonus.
Tug-o-War: Run by Belven Valdemar of the Sandpoint Shipyard. He has three sailors on one end of the rope and three particpants on the other. This game costs 1cp.
Roll a CMB for this. Lowest rolls will aid the highest.
Varisivia: This game is a joint effort between Brodert Quink, a historian, and Veznutt Parooh, owner of The Way North. Costs 1cp to play. A series of three trivia questions about Sandpoint and the surrounding areas’ history and geography.
Roll three knowledge checks: geography, history and local. You may make these untrained.
